BUILDING A STRONGER BRAND
the logo
American Red Cross of Greater Chicago/Brand Specification Guide
The American Red Cross logo is one of the most recognizable brands in the nation. The logo, direct and forw a rd in its presentation, stands out amongst a sea of other corporate identities. It is a rare logo in that it is a literal interpretation of our company’s identity. Many logos are abstract associations of a name or, image. However, the Red Cross logo is quite simply a red cross. Could it ever be anything else? More than likely not. It is a u n i versal symbol that carries the message of help to our customers.
The current American Red Cross logo has undergone a “revamp” in the last several years, as you probably h a ve noticed. The font for the organization’s name has changed from the serif font Clarendon (FIG 3.1) to a more modernized and updated sans serif font Akzidenz Gro t e s k (FIG 3.2) . More information on fonts can be found on page .

The red cross logo should never be modified or redrawn. A variety of logo and logotype formats can be requested from Ma rketing and Communications for your use. Never attempt to substitute the font or reset the name yourself. Our current slogan being used on a national level for all chapter’s is “together we can save a life.” It is i m p o rtant for the visuals we produce to carry this slogan when appropriate. We feel the slogan is important for our customers to recognize, so we suggest that you incorporate the slogan “together we can save a life” on the majority of pieces yo u r d e p a rtment produces.

stationery system: business card, envelope
American Red Cross of Greater Chicago/Brand Specification Guide
With the revamp of the local stationery a painted back was introduced, as well as setting the card in the font Univers. The new painted back adds interaction to the card and helps to make the information found on the reverse side prominent.
page 13
There is only one format for the business card opposed to the horizontal and vertical business cards which we re offered previously. If you are currently using stationery which has not been updated, please contact Marketing and Communications.
Included in the redesign of the new business cards you will notice three symbol appearing on the back of the cards (FIG 13.1) . Although the red cross is not a religious symbol, the symbol of the red crescent is used instead of the red cross by national societies in most Islamic countries. Both Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies are part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

stationery system: letterhead
American Red Cross of Greater Chicago/Brand Specification Guide
In the fall of , our local stationery was reformatted to include the slogan of “together we can save a life.” At this time new letterhead (FIG 11.1) , business cards (FIG 13.2) and envelopes (FIG 13.3) were also designed.
page 11
Please use the proper templates when appropriate, for these new stationery items. Never attempt to create your own stationery or business card with the logo. Our Chapter insists that each person working within the Chapter use uniform stationery.
The Magen David Adom, Israel’s version of the Red Cross, was founded in , yet remains excluded from membership in the International Red Cross and Red Cre s c e n t Movement because of political pressure for the and Federation to strictly interpret emblem rules, despite many previous examples of flexibility for other emblems and members. The American Red Cross stands firmly behind Israel’s Magen David Adom () in their quest for membership in the International Red Cross Movement. 1 1 1 East Wacker Drive, Suite 2 0 0 Chicago Illinois 6 0 601- 4 2 0 6 V

service icons
American Red Cross of Greater Chicago/Brand Specification Guide
The general public perception of the Red Cross is that we serve only one group, either those affected by disaster or those who need blood collected, etc. We are working to increase the public’s view or our organization and what we do. Therefore, we have created icons, logotypes, and secondary color pallettes for each service line within the Chapter (FIG 15.1) . We are hopeful that in using these icons with or without their relevant colors it will increase public awareness of the various programs and resources our Chapter offers.

The disclosures made by companies which specified the expected dollar amount of the impact varied widely. We have included a certain sample of disclosures below: “ Based on our current assessment, and subject to any changes that may result from additional technical guidance being issued, the adoption of FIN 48 on January 1, 2007 is expected to reduce our existing reserves for uncertain tax positions by approximately $130 million, to be recorded as a cumulative effect adjustment to equity, largely relating to state income tax matters.” “ The company estimates that the cumulative effects of applying this Interpretation will be recorded as a $0.1 billion increase to beginning Retained earnings. In addition, in accordance with the provisions of FIN 48, the company will reclassify an estimated $2.0 billion of unrecognized tax benefits from current to non-current liabilities because payment of cash is not anticipated within one year of the balance sheet date.” “ It is estimated that a cumulative credit in the range of $0.5 million to $2.5 million to retained earnings as of January 1, 2007 could result from the de-recognition of tax positions previously taken. The Company intends to treat interest and penalties associated with tax positions as income taxes. The Company also expects that balance sheet reclassifications of deferred taxes could occur during the first quarter of 2007 and greater volatility in the effective tax rate may be experienced due to the requirements of FIN 48.”

Other Other significant favorable drivers for individual companies included amortization differences. The largest unfavorable driver was AJCA reported by two companies, average +0.4% along with non-deductible acquisition related costs, and non-deductible IPR&D Internet (3 profitable companies) Due to the limited size of the segment, analysis was limited. However, two companies did show favorable impact from foreign operations (average –5.6%). Other significant impacts for individual companies included gain on subsidiary restructuring transaction (favorable), and state taxes (unfavorable). This can be shown graphically. The chart below shows the average impact of reconciling items above 5%, analyzed by segment, and within each segment, category. US Office Market Cycle Positions
Boston Office Market After a slow start, underlying fundamentals have noticeably strengthened in the Boston office market due to limited amounts of new supply and an increase in demand. “Boston lagged the country in terms of recovery after the recession, but it has gotten much stronger,” notes a participant. Since the start of 2007, leasing activity has totaled approximately 2.5 million in the suburbs and 783,000 in the CBD, according to Cushman & Wakefield (C&W). When combined with the high leasing totals in prior quarters, the end result has be en a consistent decline in vacancy. In fact, the overall vacancy rate in the CBD fell to single digits in the first quarter of 2007 (9.4%), according to C&W.
Second Quarter 2007 Most of the leasing activity in the CBD has been in the Financial District, which accounted for 61.00% of the CBD’s yearto-date leasing total. It posted a 7.7% direct vacancy rate and an 8.9% overall vacancy rate in the first quarter of 2007. Even though State Street Bank has placed 200,000 square feet into the Financial District’s sublease market, several large tenants are reportedly looking for space, including Deloitte & Touche, Wellington Management, and Bank of America. These tenants are looking for between 200,000 and 400,000 square feet of space. Moreover, several other tenants are looking for space between 20,000 and 25,000 square feet. As available space has dwindled, rental

rates have risen throughout this market. “Market tightening is now manifesting itself into significant rental rate increases, especially in Class-A office buildings downtown,” comments a participant. As shown in Table BO-1, the overall weighted average Class-A asking rental rate in downtown Boston increased to $47.01 per square foot in the first quarter of 2007, representing a 21.00% increase from the prior quarter. At the same time, overall vacancy in Class-A downtown assets dropped 430 basis points. Rising rental rates, a strong recovery, and an optimistic outlook are also translating into robust investor interest. “Boston witnessed a record year in terms of sales volume in 2006, and prices per square foot continue to exceed broker expectations,” exclaims a participant. In one recent sale, 147 Milk Street in the Financial District sold for $384.00 per square foot to Lexington Realty Trust. This 52,000-square-foot, tenstory property was 100.00% leased to Harvard Vanguard Medical, which has been
in the building since 1986.
Prolonged Market Peak Takes Hold The last year in this five-year period was characterized by “more capital, increased transaction activity, sharper competition, higher prices, and incipient new development.” REITs continued to drive the dynamic transaction market as they continued to “buy property to bulk up their market capitalization.” At that time, the target minimum market capitalization was $1.0 billion. Seems like pocket change today! In the second quarter 1997 issue, the Survey ran a Special Report on the National Self-Storage Market, authored by Charles Ray Wilson, MAI, CRE, president of Charles R. Wilson & Associates, Inc. of Pasadena, California. This in-depth report covered this
unique real estate sector’s industry trends, supply and demand trends, and, of course, value trends and valuation methodology. Years later, Ray would author a recurring semiannual report on the domestic self-storage industry that continues to the present time.
With the exception of regional malls, overall capitalization rates were quite stable; mall cap rates climbed about 100 basis points over the 1993-1997 period (see Chart 2). IRRs declined for all markets except for regional malls, which stayed level throughout the period (see Chart 3). As a result, the spread between overall cap rates and IRRs declined, indicating an expected slow growth in NOI and price appreciation.
The year 1997 ended on a positive note as the national highlights lead story proclaimed “Investors Cheer Another Good Year, Look Forward to 1998.” REITs, pension funds, private and public companies, opportunity funds, foreign investors, and individuals all vied for property in a very competitive and hectic transaction market. We didn’t know it then, but we were in the early stages of a prolonged market peak that would not be disturbed until the national economic recession and the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. Editor’s note: In the next issue, we will continue to chronicle the history and findings of the Korpacz Real Estate Investor Survey® during its third five years of publishing. International Schools: Planning for the Future
100 nationalities and 56 languages spoken…sound familiar? Although it sounds a lot like the profile of a student body, these numbers actually refer to our firmwide staff. Hiring Perkins Eastman means hiring an international firm that understands the value in diversity and that solving problems requires many perspectives. We believe global perspectives matter in making informed decisions, that teams that include a variety of perspectives arrive at great solutions, and that cultural differences are to be celebrated. We are proud of our tradition of diversity, which has fostered the individual expression of our employees since our firm was founded. The unique perspective each person brings enhances our firm’s ability to serve you in a meaningful and informed way. There may be several ‘right ways’ to find a solution; finding the ‘right way’ for your specific challenge requires experience, perspective and collaboration.
100/56 Charting the course: the first steps towards a better school facility. Initiating a process specifically designed to develop a strategy or road map for the future is the first step in long-term facility improvements. Whether you are planning modifications to existing facilities or creating an entirely new campus, the process is the same. It begins with determining the needs of your facilities to reflect current programmatic requirements and those for the next 10 years and beyond. Facility planning is a systematic process, in which we use the data gathered from your existing programs and facilities to form the foundations of a plan. Our process is designed specifically to meet the needs of International Schools and to maximize the time spent on site at your school. It starts by forming a Steering Committee led by the school’s most senior leadership.
Constituents involved include representatives of the School Board (or governing body), Headmaster or Director, Senior Administrators, and the Committee members. The entire process is managed and facilitated by ‘The Team’ of expert Planners and the Educational Programming, Planning and Architectural Consultant. The participation of key people provides valuable insight and helps further the future success of the facility through greater ownership of their ‘idea.’ A vision statement which includes your educational philosophy, objectives, and mission, is a major component influencing the process. Our team is experienced in clearly understanding the curricular, social and administrative goals of each client.
Collaborate.

Hospitality Design Designing the Guest Experience
Perkins Eastman is a leading international design firm at the forefront of design, specializing in Architecture, Planning, and Interior Design. Our firm is united in the belief that innovative design results from an understanding of our client’s intentions and aspirations, as much as the building type, context, and budget. The synthesis of these issues by our skilled architects and designers enables us to produce award-winning projects that earn the respect of our clients, resulting in long-term relationships. Perkins Eastman is one of the leading hospitality design firms in the world. Our senior design principals have successfully completed some of the world’s most significant hotel and resort destinations. Our hospitality experience includes an extensive portfolio of leisure resorts, urban hotels, landmark properties, renovations, and destination communities.
Our design approach and vision focus on creative collaboration among all participants in the development process to create stunning and unique hospitality environments. This process is complimented by our expertise in planning, interior design, and branding, which contribute to the successful realization of every hospitality project we undertake.

Urban destinations
Hospitality interiors
From boutique hotels and renovated landmarks to downtown convention centers and mixed-use destinations, today’s downtown hotels function as urban resorts, blending the best of city life together with the pampering of an exclusive escape.
The successful hospitality development blends touches of familiarity with the uniqueness and unexpectedness of the locale, creating a memorable guest experience. From personalized guestrooms and amenities to luxury spas and destination restaurants, the hotel interiors define the guest experience which is revealed through the senses. As designers, we work with the developer and operator to define these characteristics and to create a destination which is both personal and familiar.
As hospitality environments become more personalized, the line between hospitality and residential becomes more blurred. Hotel guests now expect the personal amenities and responsiveness of their own home to be found in the comfort of their guestroom. From luxury furniture settings and en suite entertainment systems to luxurious bath amenities and mini-bars which include espresso machines, hotels strive to create the ultimate guest experience.
Whether connecting the street life on the ground floor with restaurants and retail or framing the views of city skylines, the successful city hotel blends itself as an integral part of the urban fabric which leaves a lasting guest impression. Challenged by a fluctuating economy and growing competition, urban hotels seek to offer unique and exclusive amenities which cater to the needs of both the business and leisure travelers. Signature restaurants, boutique shops, spas, and health clubs, are some of the features which define the guest experience and establish the hotel as unique urban destination.
“A successful urban hotel starts with a great design and vision, which combines the brand with a strong sense of place.”

In developing their campus environments, community colleges must plan strategically with choices that provide a competitive advantage.
Community Colleges: An Expanding Role in a Changing Economy
Educational partnerships As one of the most entrepreneurial sectors of higher education, some community colleges have expanded their mission to include middle college and four-year baccalaureate programs. In this model a student could be on the community college campus from grades 10 through grades 14 and beyond. This continuity of place and institution maximizes student success and facility use.
Student engagement As students seek a sense of place and engagement, community colleges are rarely able to sustain a full spectrum of student activities. Balancing curriculum offerings and community outreach within a student-centered environment is an immense challenge. At some institutions centers of excellence in the fine and performing arts, athletics, and culinary arts and hospitality have proven to be successful bridges.
Faculty In recruiting and retaining full-time and adjunct faculty, community colleges face competition from four-year colleges, challenging private-sector salaries. This is within the larger demographic challenge of a dwindling supply of instructors as baby-boomers retire and fewer young adults enter education. Community colleges must respond by providing adequate office space for full-time faculty and shared suites for adjuncts.
Workforce development The demand for credit and non-credit programs in workforce development will only continue to grow in today’s economic climate. These important partnerships with regional businesses, industries and economic development initiatives significantly influence the service offerings as well as the demand for space. It is anticipated that the federal economic stimulus package will include funds for such programs.
Technology Technology and the internet have impacted community colleges as they have all aspects of society. At some institutions over 20% of course enrollment is attributed to distance learning. While there are numerous distance learning models, one successful model is a hybrid, combining both distance learning and on-campus instruction. The effects on facilities include the need for student testing spaces and centers for training faculty for technology use. Project-based learning Instruction is increasingly focused on collaborative learning, team building, and decision-making. Learning environments must support this pedagogical shift by integrating these informal group spaces within libraries, classroom buildings and commons areas. Also, design of instructional spaces should incorporate flexible furnishings and technology to allow for lecture, lab and group learning to occur in one space. This approach is applicable across disciplines and has been shown to improve student success in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines.
Sustainability In an era of volatile energy prices and concern over climate change, community colleges must also confront the issue of sustainability. From energy conscious building design and operation, to parking management programs, community colleges can take small steps that have a large impact, providing leadership and educational opportunities in regions they serve. In all of the opportunities outlined above, community colleges are inextricably linked to the businesses, institutions and citizens of their region. These complex partnerships require an experienced, knowledgeable and creative partner in the planning and design of their built environment.

In preparation for tomorrow’s challenges, community colleges need a partner in planning and design who understands their needs, in both an institutional and global context. Perkins Eastman is well positioned to be that partner. With almost three decades of expertise in higher education planning and design, Perkins Eastman employs over 700 professionals in thirteen locations throughout the world. We are experienced with the regional, national and international trends in higher education, and community colleges are a focus of our practice. As a knowledge-based practice, we have a natural affinity with our higher education clients. We share a desire for comprehensive approaches rooted in observation and study. Integral to our professional consulting and design services are the discussion and exploration of trends and successes in the design and planning of higher education environments. Benchmarking, precedent studies, site tours and user group interviews are key tools we utilize in our process. Each of our projects benefit from a broad experience with national and international clients.
Creating a new campus gateway Beacon Hall at Housatonic Community College; Bridgeport, Connecticut
Throughout the world Perkins Eastman serves multiple market sectors including civic, cultural, healthcare, retail, urban design, senior living and multifamily housing. This broad array of knowledge within a single firm is a distinct advantage: in today’s higher education facilities, instructional spaces often replicate work environments, student housing resembles market rate apartments, campus dining is informed by mixed-use urban projects, and student health and recreation are modeled on wellness and fitness centers.
Strengthening ties with the community We believe that architecture can enable and strengthen the connections between a community and its stakeholders by creating multi-purposed and flexible environments that serve a wide range of college and community uses. As a core focus of our higher education practice, Perkins Eastman recognizes the significant role community colleges play in sustaining a community’s economic welfare and quality of life. In addition to their core mission of educational excellence and creating opportunities for affordable and accessible lifelong learning, community colleges can also be effective agents of change. They offer work force development training tied to local industry needs; they provide remediation for students who require additional support; and they can initiate the college preparation process for high school students through “Middle College” programs.
Complementing our breadth of knowledge is the depth and vertical integration of our teams. With a full staff of planners, programmers, architects and technicians, we work in integrated teams that are capable of responding to the complex challenges of our clients. Our products are tailor-made and unique to each of our clients, their regions, and their specific situation. In planning and programming, our staff prides itself on our ability to work with a variety of stakeholders, ensuring critical involvement along the way. We believe our process, focused on shared authorship and a common vision, is what distinguishes our product. We know that being a valuable partner entails much more than understanding a building. It is about understanding our client’s business, including where they are coming from and where they are going.
Meeting regional needs Until recently, Housatonic Community College’s (HCC’s) legacy included more than 25 years of providing quality educational services in less than optimal buildings. Relying on insufficient and inadequate leased spaces for many years, HCC was only able to support a fraction of its potential enrollment, and its desire to positively impact the local community was limited. After relocating to their new downtown Bridgeport campus in 1997, HCC’s enrollment increased by 70 percent. Over the next six years, this growth directly translated into dollars for the city of Bridgeport. In a study completed in 2004, the college’s economic impact on its entire 11-town southwestern Connecticut service area was shown to bring in $179.9 million annually to the region. There is little wonder that the college’s next expansion plans, involving the conversion of an existing Sears, Roebuck and Co. store into a new academic building was approved to move forward in 2004. HCC called on Perkins Eastman to design the project, which integrates with the existing campus to create a new campus gateway within the Bridgeport community. The planning and design of the new facility directly responds to HCC’s desire to accommodate the expanding formal and informal educational programs as well as outreach to the community.

Perkins Eastman: TKTS, New York
The Theatre Development Fund (TDF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping theater in New York reach wider audiences. A major feature of this operation is the TKTS Booth, a discount outlet for sameday tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. TDF held an international competition to solicit concepts for a new TKTS Booth to upgrade and improve its function and to keep pace with the revitalization of Times Square. Perkins Eastman performed a feasibility study and developed a design based on the winning conceptual design by the Australian firm of Choi-Ropiha, whose original concept featured a floating and glowing red amphitheater. Located at Father Duffy Square, a slender triangular-shaped median at 47th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, the Booth responds both to its unique site and the opportunity to become a major icon in the middle of one of New York City’s most important tourist centers. The TKTS Booth highlights structural ingenuity and innovative design; the effect

of the floating red amphitheater is achieved by resting a pre-fabricated red bleacher on a structure made entirely and only out of glass. The bleachers are lit from within by LED fixtures, creating a glowing red effect that places it within the context of its brightly and permanently lit surroundings. Rising approximately 16-feet high from south to north, the Booth also responds to its placement on a triangular island in the middle of Times Square. All of the mechanical systems will reside underneath the bleachers and will be visible to the public, while ticket sales booths will placed towards the rear. During the day, visitors can sit on the lit risers, which will be enclosed on three sides by a decorative glass rail and will be closed during off-hours by decorative metal fencing and gates.

As the final leg of CIss’s phased master plan for expansion, the new High school facility is a physical manifestation of a student’s final threshold before moving onto college and post-graduate life. The maturity and freedom exhibited in the design of this building evokes the spirit with which the school hopes the students will take with them as move forward.
Concordia International School Shanghai: New High School Shanghai, China

with over 40% coverage of green roof, the new High school stands as a noteworthy model for sustainability in the international residential section of Pudong. The habitable green roof located above the Central Administration office and off the main science wing, provides an opportunity for students to spend class time outside for hands-on field work.
c o n n e c t i v i t y “Concordia’s high-quality program can only be enhanced through our new facilities. I’m excited by what’s ahead. It will allow an excellent faculty to go to the next level. It is what a 21st century school is supposed to be.” DAvID HARRIS, HIgH SCHooL PRInCIPAL, CISS
t r a n s i t i o n t r a N S I t I o N
Although all located within the same campus boundaries, the master plan organizes the progression from Elementary to High School into a sweeping movement from right the left , then north to the High School’s new home base. In observance of this overarching planning concept, the new High School concentrates shared program with the Middle School along the southern portion of the building while the dedicated High School areas including the PE (Physical Education) commons is in the most remote area at the northern end along the exterior climbing wall. As the final chance to make an impact on the 12-year old campus, the architect saw an unprecedented opportunity to develop a program and design that could stand the test of time. Flexibility of use is programmed into the organization and adjacency of primary and secondary support spaces mindful of an evolving curriculum. As learning methodologies change, the spaces offer the potential for paired classrooms through visual connectivity, as well as larger open spaces more easily organized through movable interior partitions and updated furniture systems.
e N v I r o N m e N t
CISS viewed the design and construction of their new High School facility as an opportunity to redesign the entire campus’ heating and cooling system using highly efficient geothermal technology. The system employs 905 vertical heat exchange wells in 9 heat exchange areas with wells 80m deep into what will be the future natural grass soccer field. A temperate waterbased solution stored below is then used to warm or cool the passing air which is then circulated back into all five buildings on the school’s property. The overall demand on heating and cooling is also reduced through the incorporation of green roofs over 40% of the newly constructed roof surface resulting in an overall reduced heatisland effect. The largest portion of the green roof is landscaped over light monitors located above the gymnasium/events space. These monitors help control light levels by transforming daylight into indirect light also decreasing heat gain for optimal indoor conditions. Contrasting this operationally advantageous roof is an environmental instructional garden located above the Library. This habitable garden is located with direct access from the adjacent Science Suite for cross-curricular experiments and the incorporation of ongoing field studies conducted by students on weather and air quality. The soil used on the green roofs is made from recycled crushed red bricks mixed in with compost fertilizer for the plants. All green roofs also include swale lines reducing overall storm water runoff for the site.
“We are very pleased that we can be a model in green City, JinQiao for ‘going green’; I am not aware of any other schools in China that are using geo-thermal technology for their heating and cooling systems. These initiatives demonstrate Concordia’s commitment to be on the leadingedge and to set a responsible example for our students. ” DR. JIM KoERSCHEn, HEADMASTER, CISS
The debate over books vs. digital media, allowing food and drink near books, hours of operation and the functional value of the space was resolved with the design of the Library Commons for the CISS Upper School. By transitioning use throughout the commons area from research to reading, eating and socializing, space efficiencies are accommodated for while contributing to a stronger cultural experience.

IMPORTED FOOD IN 7 STEPS There are many twists within the food import/export
trade market, but the distribution chain essentially goes like this: An importer purchases goods from an exporter. Once the goods are cleared for entry, the importer resells them to a distributor, who resells them to a retailer, who sells them to the consumer. Sometimes these parties are combined, for example if a large retail chain has its own importing and distributing divisions, but the roles and functions are the same. STEP 1
Importer places an order for a food product shipment with a foreign exporter or agent.
STEP 2
Importer or agent files appropriate documents for review American Folk Art for Kids 1-55652-499-4 by customs and the designated regulatory agency (FDA or USDA).
STEP 3
The FDA or USDA conducts a risk analysis screening based on type of food product, its country of origin or whether the exporter or importer has any prior violations.
STEP 4
There are more than 300 Ports of Entry in the United States including seaports, airports, and land locations for train or truck cargo procession
The FDA requires notice prior to shipment arrivals at Ports of Entry. Notice varies by mode of transportation: 2 hours for truck cargo, 4 hours by air or rail, and 8 hours by sea. Foods regulated by the USDA are excluded from this requirement.
Product arrives at a U.S. Port of Entry, where a customs agent reviews the shipment.
STEP 5
Kitty Cat Alphabet Book 0-9743294-0-1
The FDA or USDA determines the shipment does not need additional documentation or physical examination. Product is released (skip to Step 7). Or, the FDA or USDA flags the shipment for additional information or documentation, physical examination or detention.
