14th & 15th Sundays after Pentecost

From the Rector: Of the South Unseen

I’m not writing this for congratulations. I really doubted the truth of the man’s story in the first place about how he needed $231 to satisfy a five year old debt to the Housing Board so he could re-apply for section eight housing. I’ve gotten cynical, I’m ashamed to say, having heard the myriad and sometimes bizarre reasons people fall onto hard times. His story got more complicated. His wife who was at least half his age has three children in foster care. She was in Mobile for a meeting, he said, that I later learned was a probation hearing… She and the new baby were in the car outside. I told him that I didn’t have any money available, and he left. A few minutes later he, the wife and infant were back in the lobby; their car, that they had bought just two days before wouldn’t start. He used our phone to call the car dealer who also had a towing service…there’s an irony, I thought. He hung up the phone and told me the tow truck was on its way. That was at two thirty in the afternoon. At three thirty he asked to use the phone again…the tow truck he was told, again, was on its way. At four thirty he was back on the phone…I heard him say, “what about our baby?”…he told me that the truck wasn’t coming…never was. Why would they treat you like that? I asked. The man said he didn’t like my attitude, he answered. “Sir, please…Would you please take me and my wife and baby back to Grand Bay?” Grand Bay! I thought… There was desperation in his voice. I didn’t know if anything he told me were true…I still don’t, but K and I drove them home….down highway ninety…the same route upon which Osceola’s people were hustled from the lush glades of their homeland to the Southwestern deserts…blessed be the poor in Spirit, a voice said. We traveled past dwellings and barns and service stations with Bahia growing where there once were gas pumps, an old country store, its name once stenciled above the entrance faded into nothingness, its door ajar at the hinges…all grown derelict under the weight of incalculable poverty…an old carcass of a tractor, or what used to be a tractor… rusting with indignity….a nameless dog slinking along the shoulder of the road, his ribs showing…his attention on survival now…oblivious to us. This is the South unseen….a mean landscape…the dark shadow reality of our romantic notions of this place we call home…this bitter poverty that besets us and yet is forever being ignored….and of course this poverty is not just peculiar to the South…it plagues our world…and it is so easy to not see it….but this day there was nowhere to which I could avert my eyes. We turned off the highway onto what seemed like a paved road….old macadam of a forgotten age…It was rutted and full of pot-holes….vines snaked into the crevices in the asphalt…a way forgotten by the county and the world entire…Welcome to Grand Bay, the man said…We arrived at his house, or what was left of a house…They thanked us… They were in high spirits having come home, such as this home might be. He told me he had hope…that things were going to work out…I didn’t know if that were true either. The baby gurgled and cooed, so innocent…no knowledge of the dire predicament he was in….and why were the three older children taken from this woman? We parted tenderly, for sadly tender was this moment in truth. Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble…these crucifixions…these innocent trampled upon…the weight of the world that always finds the poor first….wearing them down…eroding their dignity…rendering them nameless… But they are of us…brothers and sisters, same genus and species…their futile scheming and their impossible dreams notwithstanding…but their hope is honorable…all hope honorable….May we keep it alive even if hardly seen? I don’t know; I can only hope….blessed be the poor in spirit… let us hope so.

Finance Notes

Congratulations to the parish on our pledge payments in July—over $2,000 ahead of expected. But if you are behind on your pledge, please catch it up, as we are still behind for the year! Also, if you are planning to spend money, or be reimbursed for money spent on an upcoming activity, please call Mary Holbrook in the church office to see if you have budget remaining. If your expenditure will be over $150, you will need to prepare a check request for approval beforehand. Our finances are sound, and financial statements are posted on a board outside the church office, for review. Thanks, Clark Kelly, Treasurer

Work Day this Saturday, 8/28 This Saturday everyone is invited to come help get the church grounds ready for Fall. The Work Day will begin at 7:30AM in order to beat the heat. Bring your work gloves, a hat and some water. All are welcome! P.S.—If anyone has a truck and is available to help haul mulch to the church, please call Katharine Flowers at 436-8932.

Our prayers are offered... •

...for Suzanne Drew and her family at the death of her brother, John Green Coats, Jr. Let light perpetual shine upon him. ...for the safe return of Joseph Willcox from Iraq. Joseph is Ellen Wingard’s cousin, and Serena Willcox’s nephew. ...and for Scott and Liz Kirby at the death of his father, Sherman Kirby. May his soul, and the souls of all the departed, rest in peace.

Ministry Fair set for Sept. 12

The annual Ministry Fair at All Saints will be held on Sunday, September 12 in Stirling Hall, from 9-10:15am AND following the 10:30 service. The Fair is a chance to learn about the various ministries at All Saints and to get involved. Stand-up breakfast is available during the 9:00 hour, and the reception after 10:30 will be in Stirling Hall. Attention, those who head up these ministries: please get your display materials and sign-up sheets ready to go!

Training & Girls’ Choirs Get New Names The All Saints’ Training Choir has been renamed ‘The St. Michael and All Angels Choir.’ This choir is open to 2nd grade and above. Rehearsals are each Tuesday 3:30-4:30 beginning September 7. Contact Jeff Clearman to sign your child up today! (jeff@allsaintsmobile.org or 438-2492) The Girls’ Choir has become ‘The St. Cecilia Choir’ and it will rehearse on a new day and time. Rehearsals will now be on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30pm, also beginning Sept. 7.

Sunday School begins September 19 We are excited about Sunday School for our children this year! We have two exciting new curricula to use that will keep things fun and interesting. Renea Greene will head Sunday School again and is busily recruiting teachers. We also ask parents to please make their commitment to Sunday School as well by consistently bringing their children to class. Our children learn better with the help of their peers in a learning community, and nothing is more defeating to a teacher who has prepared a lesson than for no one to show up! Please help us make this a banner year for our children. Sunday School is offered for pre-school (age 4) through 12th grade. There is a nursery available for infants through 3 years. Registration will take place at the Ministry Fair between services in Stirling Hall on September 12.

The holy work of reconciliation post-9/11 at Ground Zero By Anne Mallonee, August 23, 2010

[Episcopal News Service] It was a beautiful afternoon in England. Our happy group of pilgrims from the Cathedral Church of St. Mark, Minneapolis (where I was interim dean) were feeling uplifted by the beauty of the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge. We made our way to the street where our bus was to gather us up for the next leg of the journey. Behind us was an electronics store. The display was a bank of about ten televisions each with the same picture flickering silently through the plate-glass storefront. I watched for a few seconds and thought to myself, "That looks like a really bad movie." Well, it was really bad, but it wasn't a movie. The horrible sight of a jet flying into the Twin Towers had happened moments before, in New York City, where it was still morning. The bus driver had the radio turned up as we climbed on board. As the news sunk in, we sat silently and in shock. With characteristic pastoral sensitivity, the Rev. Canon John Rettger stood and looked at all of us from the front of the bus and prayed. His gentle words created a spiritual context for us to cope with the moment. I felt a familiar shifting deep within my soul. From time to time in my ministry, I've been blessed to catch a glimpse of grace, occasions when an experience of human reconciliation has revealed divine love. It is grace to notice these moments of healing and hope, to realize that it is this very work of reconciliation that we are called to do as Christians. Such times trigger a shifting deep in my soul, when priorities are confirmed and purpose is clarified. It was to this internal place that I retreated in prayer on the bus. A news crew from East Anglia Television awaited us at the next stop of our pilgrimage, Ely Cathedral. Normally a group of Americans would not have been of interest, but on that day a reporter sought me out. What were my first thoughts when I heard of the attack on the World Trade Center? "God have mercy on us," was my reply. Clearly, this was not what she expected. "Why do you say that?" she said. "Because, this is a very broken world if this is how we humans treat one another," I replied. How could I explain to her, especially in sound-bites, my sudden awareness that the ministry of recon-

ciliation to which we are called was a much bigger job than I had ever realized? That the brokenness that Jesus came to heal was more extensive than I could ever imagine? "Who do you think it was who attacked your country?" she asked. "This is a symptom of something much deeper than that," I replied, "something it will take all of us to solve." On that September day in England, I couldn't know that a few years later I would be serving at Ground Zero. As vicar of Trinity Church, Wall Street, I have listened with heavy heart to stories of that horrible day from those who were here. I have been affected by the tears of pilgrims who come to St. Paul's Chapel to bid their respects to the rescue workers who found respite in that sacred place right across from the smoldering dust. I have grown to appreciate more deeply how grief unites us humans, as alongside pictures of office workers and firefighters and police officers who died on 9/11 placed on our altar, we now also have photographs of bright-faced young men and women who have died since in Iraq and Afghanistan. Up to 2.8 million people a year come through the doors of St. Paul's and Trinity. They come from every continent and they are of all faiths, ages, colors, and economic circumstances. Through our liturgies and preaching, daily prayers for peace, written materials and exhibits, we seek to counter the atrocities of what happened across the street with a universal message of hope and reconciliation, the power of love over and against hatred, of healing from even this scale of destruction. As we approach next year's 10th anniversary of 9/11, we are asking how the holy work of reconciliation is to be played out through this parish, at this site, in the years to come. And so it was that in May, it was in total alignment with Trinity's mission, our sense of values and 313 years in Lower Manhattan, for me to attend a local community board meeting to speak in support of a proposed Islamic community center in our neighborhood, the Cordoba Initiative. The mission of the center is to be peace and reconciliation, inter and intra-faith understanding. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is not a stranger, as he and Trinity Television worked together right after 9/11 to produce a piece to promote dialogue and mutual understanding in the wake of the terrorist attacks. He leads worship in a mosque just a few blocks from St. Paul's

and Ground Zero, a mosque that has been there almost 30 years. That community board meeting was a frightening display of hatred and incivility. What I encountered there, with what I have read and heard in the months since, has only strengthened my resolve for this difficult work of reconciliation. As the issue has grown from a local concern to a national and even international tempest, particular details of content have gotten traction such as the location of the proposed community center, constitutional rights and even the faith of the president of the United States. But underneath all this lies fear and hatred: Fear that can only be addressed through the willingness of people to come together, to address the issues that fuel the fear and build the barriers; and to reject the ingredients that foster prejudice and hatred. Trinity has been criticized for supporting Park51, as the proposed community center is now called. I have been confronted in anger by those who ask how I can be so na誰ve, so stupid, so duped as to trust Imam Feisal; not because they know him personally (they usually do not) but solely because he is Muslim. The experience has led me back to the ninth chapter of Luke, when Jesus has sent the twelve to go out to preach the Kingdom and to heal. They come back later, both amazed by the work they have been able to do in his name, but alarmed because they saw an unknown stranger doing the same kind of good work. Rather than celebrate this witness to the power of God, they tried to stop this stranger. But Jesus said, "Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you." We have our work cut out for us. The need for reconciliation is only too apparent. I do not believe we can do it alone -it will take all of us. Let us work together. -- The Rev. Anne Mallonee is vicar at Trinity Wall Street in Manhattan.
