From the Rector: Of Sweet Home Alabama

Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

On the Calendar: Wednesday, October 5

Forgive my bad mood….I just read the Washington Post’s article published in 8am Race Relations Committee 9:15am L’Arche (Chapel) the Press Register this morning concerning the new immigration law that has 12N Holy Eucharist (chapel) now gone into effect in Alabama. The law touted to be the “toughest in the 4pm St Cecelia Choir country” is also proving to be the most hateful. The article focuses on a Bald7pm Adult Choir win County school that has a sizable contingent of Latino students….thirty percent of the entire student body, all Latino, have as of the writing of this Thursday, October 6 article withdrawn from school, their parents fearful of the punitive conse12N Al-Anon quences promised by this oppressive new legislation. One teacher commented 7pm AA that she knows a family that had been at the school for longer than she had Saturday, October 8 been a teacher there…she described them as a “strong Christian family” who have been very 10:30am PFLAG supportive of the mission of the school…participating in the PTO, donating money for school supplies, assimilating as model citizens. Now they are leaving. Latinos are leaving all over Sunday, October 9 the state for fear. We now call them felons. Of course they are leaving. And all the dire con8am Holy Eucharist sequences that opponents of this bill predicted are coming to pass…farmers are already des8:30am-1:30pm Blood Drive (Stirling Hall) perate for a work force to harvest their crops (imagine what that will look like in the 9am Breakfast Spring)…nurseries and landscapers, construction companies are seeing a skilled workforce 9:20am Sunday School evaporating before their eyes. It is only going to get worse in Alabama in an already fragile 10:30am Holy Eucharist economy. Reception following A letter was written to me recently asking the question vis à vis undocumented residents, Tuesday, October 11 “what part of illegal don‟t you understand.” I answered him that we did this as a legislature 12N Golden Circle unilaterally…Latinos had no say in the matter. I informed him that he might think of them as 3:30pm St Michael Choir working families who, because of the bureaucratic mountain of red tape with which they 5pm Murray House Board mtg must contend, are simply not yet able to obtain the proper documents to be U.S. citizens… They are trying (a point that has been lost), but acquiring proper documentation is for many Wednesday, October 12 reasons very difficult and in many cases prohibitively expensive… “improperly documented 9:15am L’Arche (Chapel) as yet,” that‟s the appropriate term for this small segment of our population… not criminals, 12N Holy Eucharist (chapel) 4pm St Cecelia Choir not felons…these are people, our brothers and sisters, looking for a life of well-being and dig6pm Rector’s Forum nity, a better life for their children….an education, a living wage, the same things we want for 6pm 15 Place Board mtg our children…and it is for us as people of faith to do everything in our power to grant them 7pm Adult Choir that. 7pm “The Money Pit” fundraiser I often wonder what our legislators and citizens who support such a law are hearing and reading in our churches. When we denied basic rights to Black Americans; when we lynched them and burned crosses in their yards…what were their preachers saying to them; what passage of scripture would justify such hatred….We have a racist and obsolete constitution in which the word justice is buried in the verbiage of the longest state constitution in our country. We have a brutally regressive system of taxation, perhaps the most regressive tax system in the country…we, for God‟s sake, tax groceries! And yet statistics show that we are a people who go to church more than most other areas of the nation. What is being taught in our churches? Where is the moral will of our citizenry to be the hope, to be the change God envisions for our world…a world in which there is unfettered egalitarianism, and room for all at God‟s gracious table, a world in which we are our brother‟s keeper, a world in which all, even the cast out, live as equals. This is what Jesus preached….Have our legislators not read that ubiquitous in scripture?…or if they do, are they choosing to ignore it…or is it an insidious matter of self-interest? Our dubious reputation as a backward state has yet again been confirmed …we‟re yet again the talk of the nation as being ignorant and hateful….How long, O Lord, how long?…Let us, dear people of God, be the hope, for there are a lot of people in our midst without it…and let us be the change that has to take place, so we can call our part of God‟s promised commonweal, this land upon which many of us grew up…. sweet home.

In order to help maintain adequate blood iron levels, we recommend that you include the following foods in your normal diet*: -Spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes; beans (lima beans, soybean sprouts, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, etc.) -Bran cereal, whole wheat bread, white rice, cocoa, brown sugar -Raisins, dried apricots, peaches, nuts (especially black walnuts, almonds and cashews) -Oysters, clams, scallops and shrimp -Wheat germ and wheat, rice or corn flakes, brewer's yeast -Prune juice, apple juice -Red meats, liver, chicken Also... Other iron blockers include oxylates and phosphates. * Some anemia is not due to inadequate iron consumption. If you are chronically anemic, please consult a physician.

Ours prayers are offered for the following parishioners: -for Burl Ratcliffe, whose nephew, Todd Graham, died suddenly last week. -for Jean Alice Basenberg and her family, at the death of her father, Harold Woodrow Hansen. Harold was confirmed here in 2009. The Burial Office was read for him on Sunday, October 2, and his ashes were interred in the columbarium at All Saints. -for Evi Valera, whose cousin, Alina Perez, died of cancer last week in Spain. May their souls and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Bayou Bash 2011 is on its way!!!! November 12 is the date for All Saints‟ annual Bayou Bash fundraiser. Come enjoy a great evening of good food and drink, great music (entertainment by Bust!), silent and live auctions, and great people! Tickets are $30 and will go on sale this Sunday between services. This year, long-sleeve t-shirts will be made with the new logo seen above. The price will be determined by the number of shirts ordered. Contact Carol Mackey at 251-402-9448 or at carolhmackey@gmail.com to place your order. Many volunteers are needed to run this great evening. To volunteer, please contact Carol Mackey at 251-402-9448 or carolhmackey@gmail.com, or Pete Mackey at 251-510-6905 or psmackey@bcmlawyers.com and they will put you in touch with the heads of various committees. Bayou Bash is our main fundraiser, the proceeds of which benefit the community ministries supported by All Saints, such as IHN/Family Promise, the All Saints Refugee Fund, McKemie Place, 15 Place, L‟Arche, Alabama Arise, South Alabama Cares, and Education for Ordained Ministry. The primary moneymakers in this event are the ticket sales (so buy some for your family and for some friends — or invite your friends to buy their own tickets!) and the auction. The auction committee would like every household to contribute something to the auction. Ask for donations from businesses you support; consider donating your time or talent for auction….an item, or a service such as babysitting, cake-baking, yardwork, painting, etc. Please be sure that you are donating something you yourself would be willing to buy, not a typical $1 item at a garage sale. Mark your calendars for this terrific event! And, as always, thank you for your generosity in helping our community ministries become reality! Look for us on Facebook: The 7th Annual Bayou Bash

Who may serve on the Vestry of All Saints Episcopal Church? If you meet the qualifications to vote at the Parish Meeting you are eligible to serve on the Vestry, with the following exception: The All Saints Constitution states that retiring Vestry Members may not be elected to succeed themselves for two years, with the exception of those serving an unexpired term for one year or less.
