Dear Delegate, We are delighted to introduce Bord Bia’s inaugural Global Sustainability Conference “Our Food. Our Future. Sustainability: The Bottom Line” which takes place in the Convention Centre Dublin on September 26th 2013. This conference gives us the perfect platform to engage in meaningful conversation about what producing food more sustainably means. We will listen to experiences of major brands such as McDonald’s, Tesco, Pepsico, Mars and Nestle, allowing us to challenge each other regarding the obstacles to be overcome, to share unique insights and experiences on what the future holds and to provoke discussion on how the sector needs to evolve to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by sustainability. Ireland is in a strong position to become a credible thought-leader within the sustainability conversation because of our natural advantages and the strong perception of Ireland as a high quality supplier with strong sustainability credentials. At the conference we will hear from other inspiring thought leaders within the global food and drink industry who will share their insights into how they have addressed and responded to the challenges. A sustainable source of supply translates to a sustainable business plan so not only does it make sense, it is the right thing to do. Having a sustainability agenda is about ensuring your business fully understands the social, environmental and economic impact it has on society and the world at large. Key to success is to engage with consumers, suppliers and staff. On September 26th, we will hear from speakers how strong commitment, clear focus and a well thought out plan are the key success factors to deliver on your objectives to do business more sustainably. In 2012 Bord Bia introduced a unique, industry-wide sustainability development initiative called “Origin Green”. The programme sees food manufacturers develop a sustainable plan that sets out clear targets in key areas such as raw material sourcing, manufacturing processes and social sustainability. Already almost 70% of Ireland’s exports are signed up to Origin Green – proving the industry’s commitment to sustainability. Our goal is full participation by all farms and food businesses. Irish Food and Drink exporters want to establish themselves as a realistic solution to the supply chain needs of leading food and drink companies in the sustainability conversation. The road to sustainable food and drink production is a long one and is peppered with many obstacles. It requires a global and concerted effort to introduce real change to the industry. Ireland has begun its journey to sustainable food and drink production and we are delighted that you are joining us on that journey.

It could be said that those who look to the future are those who will ultimately shape it… and those who embrace sustainability today are ensuring the future of tomorrow. Sustainability is now an essential part of the global food system. The global population is set to increase by more than 2 billion by 2050, meaning the world will need to produce 70% more food from increasingly limited resources. The challenge is enormous but not insurmountable. ‘Origin Green’, a unique and ambitious sustainability development programme for Ireland’s food and drink industry, will assist Ireland in becoming a world leader in high quality sustainable food and drink production. Irish industry’s commitment to this programme highlights our serious and dedicated approach to lead and contribute to a sustainable food and drink industry. When you buy food and drink from Irish exporters, you’ll know it’s produced hand in hand with nature, you’ll know it’s ‘Origin Green’. To find out more visit www.origingreen.ie
