Chamber’s First Total Resource Campaign, Unmask the Possibilities, Exceeds Goal
May 2015
The possibilities were unmasked during The Chamber’s first Total Resource Campaign (TRC) as 49 volunteers were challenged to raise more than $150,000 in sponsorships and memberships over a six week period. Led by campaign chair, Kevin Pesko, Bank of Belleville, the nine teams raised more than $170,000, surpassing the goal of $150,000. The TRC gives the Chamber a new way to collect the revenue to fund Chamber programs, which is returned to the community in the form of business building events and initiatives. The TRC was a collaborative effort of volunteers and Chamber staff as they embarked on this new form of selling sponsorships, recruiting new members and spreading the word of The Chamber and its benefits. The 49 volunteers not only brought in sponsorship dollars, but also recruited more than 43 new Chamber members. The team captains leading the success of the teams included: Jared Beard, YMCA of Southwestern IL; Geri Boyer, Kaskaskia Engineering Group; Jeff Dosier, Belleville Township High School Dist. 201; Mary Dahm Schell, The EDGE; Andrea Frazier, Lindenwood University; Scott Givens, Scott Givens LLC; Natalie Jablonski, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital; Tracy McCollum, Standard Rule Promotions and Mike McManus, Memorial Hospital. Campaign chair, Pesko, reflected on the completion of the Campaign stating, “The sponsorship funds we raised exceeded our expectations as did the number of new memberships gathered. There was a great deal of enthusiasm and enjoyment amongst all involved, including me. It was rewarding to see how our membership recognized both the value of a vibrant Chamber of Commerce as well as the benefits of sponsoring and participating in events. I expect this will be even more successful next year. “Thank you” all around to the dedicated campaign volunteers, the wonderful staff, and the supportive membership.” The Campaign included volunteer training, weekly reward lunches and a victory party to celebrate the outstanding performance of Chamber volunteers. A special recognition was given to Natalie Jablonski, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, for being the top producer in the Campaign. Jablonski shares her enthuasim stating, “On behalf of HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, I was pleased to take part in the TRC. I’ve always said “you get out of your membership what you put into it”, and the TRC allowed St. Elizabeth’s Hospital to share the value of the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce membership with the community. It was a win-win opportunity and I was excited to be a part of it!” The Chamber looks forward to the continued success of this campaign as they start to brainstorm for next year.
Women Spring to New Levels at Springboard to Success
The Second Annual Springboard to Success, hosted by the law firm Sandberg, Phoenix, and von Gontard, P.C., along with the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce and the O’Fallon-Shiloh Chamber of Commerce, inspired women to spring forward as they became empowered by a variety of speakers on Tuesday, April 21 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. More than 100 women were in attendance to take in new knowledge from speakers including: Jim Schneider & Lynn Clapp, Vertical Performance; Melenie Broyles, Etiquette Saint Louis; Wendy Symer, WLS Consulting. Upon checking-in, attendees were welcomed with goody bags and able to visit their choice of vendor tables. There were 27 vendors in attendance, representing an array of businesses. Attendees were able to visit the vendors between speaker sessions. The day concluded with a panel focused on diversity. The panelist included: Betsy Cohen, The Mosaic Project; Rachel Jackson-Bramwell, Project Compassion; Sandy Smith, TheBANK of Edwardsville; Chi Yong Throckmartin, Donovan Rose Nester, P.C. The panelist at the Second Annual Springboard to Success discuss diversity in the workplace.
Thank you to attendees and sponsors for helping make this event a success. The Thethis Chamber 1 Chamber looks forward to the continued growth of annual Connection event.

BUILT
WITH A PLAN
In May 1958, Memorial Hospital opened its doors to the Belleville community with a plan to become the area’s healthcare leader. And our commitment to Belleville and this region remains deeply rooted.
CONNECTED
FOR YOU
With the hospital as a strong foundation, we’ve continued to evolve by adding cutting-edge technology and top-notch physicians. From the Memorial Care Center, Memorial Medical Group and The Orthopedic and Neurosciences Center, our network is connected to provide the patients we serve with seamless, high-quality care in all of our communities.
GROWING
TO SERVE
In 2016, we look forward to opening Memorial Hospital East in Shiloh, a state-of-the-art facility that will more than satisfy the healthcare needs of the communities we serve as well as provide easier access to our patients to the north and east. This is just one of many stages of growth for The Memorial Network as we look to the future of healthcare.

Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy: Collaborating to Improve STEM Education in the Metro-East Region of Illinois
The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is a teaching and learning laboratory for imagination and inquiry. Created by the Illinois State Legislature, IMSA has two charges: (1) to provide a uniquely challenging STEM focused residential high school program for 10-12 grade students and (2) to stimulate excellence in STEM education across the state. IMSA fulfills the second charge by bringing exemplary STEM programs to students across Illinois through our Professional Field Services. In 2008-09, IMSA launched a new approach to more proactively and effectively meet the needs of educators and students in the Metro-East region of Illinois, targeting under-represented populations in under-resourced communities. A hallmark of the strategy was the establishment of IMSA Field Offices as “on the ground” permanent points of presence, anchoring IMSA to the community and positioning IMSA for greater relevance, market penetration, yield and impact. IMSA’s Metro East Field Office is located in Belle Valley School District. Since the Metro East Field Office opening, almost 4000 students and 700 teachers have participated in our STEM programs in their own community. Additionally, twenty-eight teen volunteers from IMSA and local high schools have contributed over 1,700 hours of service during these STEM programs. In collaboration with local partners, such as BelleValley School District, Scott Air Force Base, St. Louis Science Center, local universities and regional offices of education, IMSA has been able to grow our programs and reach more students. Programs include both student enrichment as well as teacher professional development. All IMSA programs are built on IMSA’s Core Competencies: competency-driven, inquiry-based, problem-centered and integrative. Enrichment for students is a key strategy for IMSA’s program growth in the region. IMSA offers a variety of programs during the year, our largest being Summer@IMSA. This summer, IMSA will host three Summer@IMSA programs for students in the Metro East. All programs offer need-based scholarships. Two programs will be held at Belle Valley School in Belleville: Chemistry in the Kitchen for rising 3rd and 4th graders and Engineering: The Lost E in STEM for rising 5th and 6th graders. In addition, IMSA has added a program for 7th and 8th graders this year at McKendree University called Throw Back STEM. Collaborating with schools and teachers is essential in achieving our goals, this is why IMSA offers professional development on the best practices in STEM teaching and learning. All teacher offerings are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. IMSA’s largest program in the Metro East is the IMSA Fusion program. IMSA Fusion is both a teacher professional development program and a STEM enrichment program for Illinois students. Currently there are 15 Fusion partner schools in St. Clair and Madison Counties. IMSA programs are coordinated by Dawn Waller, Metro East Field Office Coordinator, a native of Mascoutah. Dawn brings her deep understanding of the region and of IMSA programs to the table to develop programs and partnerships that are sustainable. Chuck Joley:
About TheBANK of Edwardsville’s Commercial Banking Group When I started my new law firm, I decided to start fresh with a new bank. I was looking for a more personal touch with a local bank, and wanted somebody that would help us operate our payroll and help us manage our accounts and cash flow. I got exactly what I was looking for with TheBANK of Edwardsville. The people there have been very accommodating, friendly and available to me 100 percent of the time. The level of personal attention and responsiveness I get with TheBANK isn’t exactly commonplace in today’s banking marketplace. Frankly, their people in the field have just been better than the competition. Once I saw how TheBANK worked with me on the business side of things, I decided to make them my exclusive bank for all my financial needs.

Chamber Member Update HOLLAND CONSTRUCTION SERVICES RECEIVES AGC SAFETY AWARD
Due to its outstanding safety record, Holland Construction Services (Holland) was recently presented with the Associated General Contractors (AGC) Annual Safety Award. The award was presented on February 25th at the Southern Illinois Builders Association’s Annual Awards Banquet. Holland’s Safety & Health Director, Doug Devlin, who accepted the award on behalf of Holland, said the company takes safety very seriously citing Holland’s record of zero OSHA recordable incidents and zero lost time cases in over 7 years. Devlin said Holland maintains safety as the highest priority for every job. Holland’s safety program consists of several facets to ensure that all company and site employees are active participants in a functional and successful safety culture that goes above and beyond OSHA standards. Holland’s project superintendents each hold a 30-hour OSHA certification card, representing in-depth training by OSHA-designated instructors. Superintendents are responsible for the overall safety of job sites, incorporating multiple safety standards above and beyond OSHA’s minimum requirements, for all individuals on the job site. In addition to the AGC Safety Award, Holland has been awarded other safety-related designations over the past seven years by both the Southern Illinois Builders Association and Bituminous Insurance. MEMORIAL HOSPITAL RECOGNIZED BY HEALTHGRADES WITH 2015 PATIENT SAFETY EXCELLENCE AWARD™ AND 2015 OUTSTANDING PATIENT EXPERIENCE AWARD™
Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce it has received the 2015 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ and the 2015 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ from Healthgrades , the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. The Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ recognizes hospitals for outstanding performance in the delivery of a positive experience for patients during their hospital stay. Healthgrades evaluated the 3,575 hospitals that submitted patient surveys to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), covering admissions from January 2013 – December 2013 in order to identify hospital performance in this area. Healthgrades evaluated performance by applying a scoring methodology to 10 patient experience measures, using data collected from a 27-question survey of the hospital’s own patients. The survey questions focus on patients’ perspectives of their care in the hospital. Question topics range from cleanliness and noise levels in patient rooms to factors such as pain management and responsiveness to patients’ needs. The measures also include whether a patient would recommend the hospital to friends or family. In order to be recognized by Healthgrades for the Outstanding Patient Experience Award™, hospitals must meet eligibility requirements for consideration, which in addition to a number of survey responses, includes clinical performance thresholds. Nationally, 3,005 hospitals met those requirements with 452 hospitals outperforming their peers, based on their patients’ responses in order to achieve this distinction. The Patient Safety Excellence Award™ honors hospitals for performance in the prevention of serious, potentially preventable complications during hospital stays. The distinction places Memorial among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for its excellent performance as evaluated by Healthgrades. For more information about Healthgrades, to download a full copy of the report or to get information about hospital and physician quality, visit www.Healthgrades.com/quality.
HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL INCREASES EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WITH NEW DECONTAMINATION SHELTER
HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital recently purchased a new Losberger MDS-three line mass casualty/decontamination shower shelter by Traube Tent. The shelter will be used for decontamination events and mass casualty events in our region. The purchase of the new shelter was made possible by a grant from the Friends of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, the hospital’s foundation. The total cost was approximately $42,000. “As a region leader in emergency preparedness, St. Elizabeth’s is pleased to provide this crucial emergency equipment for our Region 4 EMS area,” noted Kevin Scheibe, EMS/Emergency Management Coordinator for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “Having this advanced resource allows our community to be confident in knowing that St. Elizabeth’s will be ready to deploy and serve their needs in any decontamination or mass casualty event that arises in our area.” The new shelter can deploy in less than six minutes which allows for faster patient decontamination and patient care. It also features three lanes for gender specific accommodations, as well as non-ambulatory patients that are in need of treatment while on backboards. Other features also include improved privacy, climate control for extreme weather situations, as well as faster processing, allowing patient care to begin sooner. The shelter also is equipped and suitable to decontaminate pediatric patients. St. Elizabeth’s emergency response region includes a rural farming region, as well as a well-developed industrial region, where many hazardous risk events could potentially occur. In order to help prepare for such events, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital conducts a Hazard Vulnerability Analysis each year to determine which potential hazards and risks could occur in our region. Through this annual analysis, hazmat risk events have been placed in the top five potential emergencies each year. Additionally, purchasing the decontamination shelter allows St. Elizabeth’s to remain in compliance with the new Federal and State emergency preparedness “all-hazards approach” requirements. Hospitals can no longer completely rely on local resources to provide decontamination in medium to large scale events, as resources are often quickly consumed in the time of need. For more information about St. Elizabeth’s Hospital visit steliz.org.
