City Update City of Belleville Temporary Office Relocations Renovations will begin soon at Belleville’s City Hall. Built in 1957, the current City Hall at 101 S. Illinois St. is a sturdy building and has served the public well with its terrazzo floors, large windows, and high ceilings, but asbestos abatement and compliance with ADA requirements are important changes that are long overdue. Renovations are expected to be complete in early 2017. While these renovations are taking place, all offices currently within City Hall will temporarily relocate as indicated below. Phone numbers, mailing addresses, and emails will not change during the temporary relocation. The City of Belleville thanks the public for their cooperation and understanding during the next few months. The renovations will help the City better serve the businesses and residents in the years ahead!
15th Anniversary of 9/11 September 11, 2016 marks the 15th Anniversary of the fateful day we now refer to as 9/11. The Committee to Construct the September 11 Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois will host two events on 9/11/2016. The first event is the 5th Annual September 11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk. This 5K begins at 9:11am at Hough Park in Belleville, which also serves as the ending point. Proceeds benefit the construction of the September 11 Memorial Walkway. For more information, or to register online, visit wtcmemorial.us. The second event, co-hosted by the City of Belleville, is the Moment of Remembrance and Dedication Ceremony, which begins at 2:00pm at the Fire Administration Building at 1125 S. Illinois Street. The public is invited to attend this ceremony to honor those who perished 15 years ago on 9/11 at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93. The ceremony will include the dedication of Phase 1 of the September 11 Memorial Walkway featuring an actual beam from the fallen World Trade Center. Parking is available behind the building. Spotlight on Education Olympic Athletes Can Get Their Head in the Game, Thanks to Dr. Eggleston! The Summer Olympics will begin in Rio de Janerio, spanning from August 5 to August 21. We at McKendree University are excited not only to cheer on our nation’s athletes as they compete, but also because we have our own tie to the Olympics – Dr. Tami Eggleston. Dr. Eggleston teaches psychology classes oncampus and online at McKendree University, and she is also the Associate Dean for Institutional Effectiveness. Additionally, she is a certified sport psychology consultant and is on the United States Olympic Committee registry of consultants. While she regularly works with athletes at McKendree University and external sport psychology consultants, she may be called upon by Olympic athletes for some assistance for the summer games as well. “I agreed to work with any Olympic or Olympic-hopeful athlete if they contact the United States Olympic Committee,” she said. “In past years, I have had various athletes who were Olympic hopefuls contact me for some mental training.” What does psychology have to do with the Olympics? Quite a lot, actually! “Psychology or mental training is important for athletes, but as the competition gets more challenging, the mental training becomes even more important,” said Dr. Eggleston. “It would be hard to imagine a competition more emotionally challenging than the Olympics. People train their whole lives for these events and travel to unfamiliar places with unfamiliar people. Being prepared mentally is essential for success.” For those Olympic athletes or would-be athletes who call upon Dr. Eggleston for help, they will gain an incredible edge over their competitors. “Athletes can learn a variety of skills related to focus, stress management, self-talk, and handling the emotional highs and lows of competition,” Dr. Eggleston noted. “Any sports that take place in a very short amount of time, give you only one chance to do it right, and provide very little room for error have the most psychological influence. Therefore, sports psychology could have a very large influence on sports such as archery, diving, and gymnastics. I would be helping athletes work through their stress, anxiety, burnout, expectations, and self-confidence, to name a few.” While Dr. Eggleston spends most of her time working with teams or individuals, she has also been known to work with coaches. “Most of the best coaches have a good understanding of sport psychology and understand how to motivate people,” she said. “I am very fortunate that I have good relationships with many McKendree University coaches. I learn from them, and they trust me with their most valuable resource – the minds of their athletes.” Does Dr. Eggleston have a favorite sport to watch or work with in particular? Truth be told, she likes them all! “When I watch the Olympics, I end up enjoying all of the sports,” she said. “I find it very inspirational to learn about the stories of the athletes. I can’t help being in awe of their physical and mental abilities. I usually get ‘Olympic fever’ and just enjoy watching all sports, even sports I know very little about. I also become overwhelmingly patriotic and feel so much pride when our USA athletes compete well. At McKendree, I have worked with almost every team or an individual from all sports. I have particularly enjoyed working with the bowling teams, the women’s basketball team, softball, soccer, and volleyball; however, I enjoy working with any athlete who truly wants to be the best they can be. My husband drag races, so my favorite sport is auto racing, but they don’t have that in the Olympics – yet!”

HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL OFFERS PEDIATRIC INCONTINENCE THERAPY Because all school-age children deserve to have dry days and dry nights.
As back to school time nears, while most parents are consumed with the hustle and bustle of school shopping, squeezing in additional family time and getting back into their school-year routines; other parents worry that their child may have a wetting accident at school, or at a friend’s house. For these parents, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is here to help through specialized pediatric incontinence therapy. “Children develop control of their bowel and bladder function at different ages, typically achieving independence with toileting by age four,” said Stacie Dichsen, PT, WCS of the Pelvic Physical Therapy Clinic at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “In fact, approximately 20 percent of five year olds, 10 percent of seven year olds, and five percent of 10 year olds may still wet the bed.” The impact of bedwetting on children as well as their families can be devastating. The fear and shame of having an accident affects a child’s self-esteem, relationships with their peers and family, and can lead to underachieving at school. Children can become reluctant to participate in school or extra-curricular activities, avoid sleep overs and become withdrawn from friends, yet the Journal of Pediatric Urology reports that only approximately 36 percent of parents are aware there is professional help for their child’s bowel/bladder issues. Children with the following symptoms could benefit from bladder/bowel control therapy: Daytime Wetting | Nighttime Wetting | Urinary urgency (constant or strong need to urinate) | Urinary frequency (urinating over eight times in a 24 hour period | Urinary retention (not fully emptying bladder) | Bowel incontinence or pain with bowel movement | Constipation | Pain with bladder emptying Many parents often wonder how physical therapy can help with bowel and bladder control. “A large component of physical therapy care is to evaluate and treat muscles – strengthen weak muscles, relax and stretch muscles that are tight, shared Dichsen. “Something most people don’t realize is that a large component of normal bowel and bladder function is proper coordination/use of the pelvic floor muscles.” Treatment options may include: • Biofeedback - External electrodes on the pelvic floor to teach children how to retrain the muscles that control their bladder and bowel function. This is done with animated computer biofeedback to allow success in a fun environment. • Behavioral Modification - education to establish healthy bowel and bladder habits that will improve bowel and bladder function. • Dietary Modification - education to eliminate dietary irritants that contribute to bowel and bladder problems. • Instruction in appropriate home exercise program - to retrain the pelvic floor muscles that help with bowel and bladder control. To learn more about Pediatric Bowel/Bladder Therapy at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital call (618) 234-2120, ext. 2655.

ALBERT EINSTIEN DIED FROM AN ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM, BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO It doesn’t take an Einstein to recognize an aortic aneurysm, just a simple screening ultrasound. Prairie Heart Institute at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital now offers a screening ultrasound to identify abdominal aortic aneurysms, the third leading cause of sudden death in men over 60. It is also what caused Albert Einstein’s death in 1955. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a bulge in the main blood vessel in your body, the aorta, as it travels through the abdomen and can be caused by hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). Other causes include genetic conditions, infections, and injury. If an aneurysm becomes too large, it may burst, often resulting in death. “People who have aneurysms do not have any symptoms until it ruptures,” said Dr. Jeffrey Goldstein, Director of Prairie Vascular Services at Prairie Heart Institute at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “Once an aneurysm ruptures there is greater than a 75 percent chance the patient will not survive. However, by repairing an aneurysm electively, there is greater than a 95 percent chance of survival. Therefore, one screening ultrasound reduces the risk of dying from an aortic aneurysm by 70 percent!” Risk Factors include: Smoking | Family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm | High blood pressure | Diabetes | High cholesterol Those who should consider the ultrasound screening include: • Men between the age of 65 and 75, who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their life. • Men and women 50 years or older with family history of aortic aneurysm. The screening includes a brief ultrasound, using sound waves to create a picture of the abdominal aorta. The width of the aorta is then measured to determine if there is a bulge. If a bulge is present, next steps may include re-checking through ultrasound after a set period of time, intervention using stents or surgical repair of the aorta. If you feel you may benefit from further evaluation, please discuss the benefits of scheduling an abdominal aortic ultrasound with your health care provider. To learn more about Prairie Heart Institute visit www.prairiefirst.com. .........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Chamber Member Update MEMORIAL BREAST HEALTH CENTER EARNS NATIONAL ACCREDITATION Memorial’s Breast Health Center of Excellence was granted a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Memorial’s Breast Health Center of Excellence is the only breast center accredited by the NAPBC in the metro-east and has earned the Center of Excellence designation from the American College of Radiology. In 2014, Memorial was the first hospital in the area to provide 3-D mammography (breast tomosynthesis). Today, Memorial provides 3-D mammography at its Breast Center in Belleville as well as its diagnostic facility in O’Fallon. Accreditation by the NAPBC is given only to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. A multi-disciplinary team of surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and breast health professionals worked together over a period of three years to achieve this accreditation. Members of the team included: Dr. William Popovic, medical oncologist with Illinois Oncology, Dr. James Clanahan, breast program leader and surgeon with Lincoln Surgical, Dr. Susan Ladusinsky, radiation oncologist with The Cancer Treatment Center, Dr. Stephen Bolestea, pathologist, Dr. Nicholas Hilpipre, with Clinical Radiology and lead interpreting radiologist in Memorial’s Breast Health Center, Kerry Wrigely, quality improvement director, Pam Holbrook, radiology director, Kim Widel, Memorial Breast Health Center and breast program coordinator, Anne Thomure, director of hospital and community relations and Megan Moulton, social media and outreach coordinator. Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to: • Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services • A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options • Completion of a survivorship care plan on every patient, and • Quality breast care close to home. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease. “We are extremely proud to receive this accreditation from NAPBC,” said Mark J. Turner, Memorial Regional Health Services president. “This accreditation validates the commitment of our physicians as well as Memorial’s staff to provide exceptional breast health services to our patients.” The NAPBC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast. This mission is pursued through standard-setting, scientific validation, and patient and professional education. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................

BELLEVILLE’S MAIN STREET MARATHON CERTIFIED AS QUALIFYING RACE FOR BOSTON MARATHON
HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital proudly supports race as medical support provider. HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is proud to be the main medical support provider and a major sponsor for the inaugural Belleville Main Street Marathon. The marathon will be held at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2016, and is presented by the Belleville Running Club and Toolen’s Running Start. “We are very excited about St. Elizabeth’s sponsorship,” said race co-director Sarah West. “They are providing major support, not only by being a key sponsor, but also by donating major medical and marketing support. Their involvement will boost this event to another level, especially with the top-notch medical support we’ll have on the course.” The 26.2-mile, Boston Marathon qualifying race will be held in historic downtown Belleville, Illinois, and feature America’s longest Main Street. The marathon course has been certified by USA Track & Field, which makes it a qualifying course for the prestigious Boston Marathon. The course will start around West Main and First streets in downtown Belleville. Half of the course will be along America’s longest Main Street and the other half will be on portions of the paved Richland Creek Greenway Trail and MetroLink Bike Trial. Hydration and fueling stations will also be located throughout the race course. Clinical staff from St. Elizabeth’s will be volunteering the day of the race, providing medical attention to runners with minor injuries and assistance in stabilizing and transferring runners with more serious conditions to the nearest hospital. According to Bob Farmer, MD, “Runners can experience dehydration, heat stroke and exhaustion, along with a multitude of other injuries on a 26-mile race. As the medical providers for the marathon, St. Elizabeth’s will have a full complement of clinical specialists on-site including physicians, nurses, athletic trainers and physical therapists to assist runners that may need medical attention. There will be additional coordination with area EMS agencies and City of Belleville first responders.” Marathon co-director Mike Toolen notes, “We want to show off the great city of Belleville to the running community, and the excitement is building. The marathon course is fairly flat, containing only a few hills on the scenic course running along Main Street. There will be plenty of water stops, medical assistance and cheering volunteers and spectators.” Race organizers have received strong support from the throughout the local community, including Underwood Chiropractic and Robert “Chick” Fritz, Inc, the other top tier sponsors of the marathon. “We also have received a tremendous amount of support from the city of Belleville, and we are just so very grateful for all the other numerous businesses, city leaders, and individuals who are getting on board to make this a great event,” added Sarah West, marathon co-director with Toolen. “That type of support makes Belleville an ideal place to hold a marathon, both for the runners and the organizers. Runners love a course filled with spectators, and we are going to need a lot of volunteers.” Divisions for the marathon are: Top Overall Male & Female; Masters (Male & Female). Age groups for the marathon are separated by male and female and are 19 & under, 20 – 24, 25 – 29, 30 – 34, 35 – 39, 40 – 44, 45 – 49, 50 – 54, 55 – 59, 60 – 64; 65 – 69, 70 & over. All participants will receive a participant’s medal and the top three overall winners and top 3 finishers in each age division will receive awards. Following the race, there will be a post-race party, and at 1:00 p.m. an awards ceremony will be held.
