U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT NAMES MEMORIAL AS HIGH PERFORMING Memorial Hospital, part of BJC HealthCare, has been recognized as High Performing for 2022 by U.S. News & World Report in the treatment of heart failure, chronic obstructive coronary disease (COPD), diabetes, kidney failure and knee replacement. The annual Procedures and Conditions ratings, now in their eighth year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for common conditions and elective procedures. These ratings extend the U.S. News mission of providing consumers with patient decision support beyond the Best Hospitals rankings, which are geared toward complex specialty care. Memorial’s “High Performing” ratings for heart failure, COPD, diabetes, kidney failure and knee replacement recognize care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes. “High Performing” is the highest rating U.S. News awards for those types of care. Barnes-Jewish Hospital and its physician partners at Washington University School of Medicine have been named one of America’s “Best Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report. Barnes-Jewish ranked No. 11 in the nation, moving up six spots from its previous position on the publication’s elite honor roll of the country’s top 20 hospitals. The report also ranked Barnes-Jewish as No. 1 in Missouri and No. 1 in the metro St. Louis area. The rankings have been published on U.S. News & World Report’s website, usnews.com/besthospitals, and will appear in the magazine’s August issue.

Medical Diagnostic Sonography was named the top Healthcare Support Job, on U.S. News & World Report list of Best Jobs for 2022. To help meet job market demands, Southwestern Illinois College is offering a three-semester, 42 credit hour, certification program in Sonography starting in the Fall 2022 Semester. “The ultrasound career field is in such high demand with competitive pay in multiple healthcare settings,” said SWIC Diagnostic Medical Sonography Coordinator Jacqueline Owens. “There is so much more than meets the eye and being a sonographer allows you to see what’s happening with your patients up close and in real-time.” Sonographers are trained professionals who specialize in operating non-invasive, ultrasonic imaging equipment. Sonographers work in hospitals, physicians’ offices, and outpatient imaging centers. The field is expected to grow 12 percent by year 2029. MEMBER NEWS IMPACT STRATEGIES TO RENOVATE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS FOR COVENANT HOUSE MISSOURI IMPACT Strategies is beginning the interior build-out of ten additional bedrooms for Covenant House Missouri’s shortterm shelter program on their main campus. Covenant House Missouri is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth between the ages of 16-24 in the city of St. Louis. The project will create additional bedrooms, moving the short-term housing floor from ten double occupancy bedrooms to twenty single occupancy bedrooms. By providing individual bedrooms for all young people staying in the short-term program, the organization can elevate their ability to be COVID-19 responsive. Single occupancy bedrooms provide a safer way to quarantine if there is a case on campus. In addition to sleeping areas, the renovations will include additional restrooms, laundry rooms, offices, and common spaces. “Our goal is to provide safety, security, and dignity to all young people in our housing programs. Creating a space where each youth has their own bedroom is in line with our values of inclusivity and will ensure our holistic services can meet the needs of all the youth in residence,” said Jessica Erfling, CEO at Covenant House Missouri. The $750,000 project was funded in part by grants through the Division of Homeless Services and the City of St. Louis Emergency Solutions Grants (part of the CARES Act). Oculus, Inc. is the architect-of-record. In September 2020, IMPACT Strategies completed the renovation of Covenant House Missouri’s Wellness Center on time, under budget and with no disruption to operations. The renovation included new therapy offices, a large common area, an intake office, and an exam room. “IMPACT Strategies is honored to once again partner with Covenant House Missouri to support their critical mission of providing assistance and solutions for youth as they move from homelessness to hope,” said Nick Walker, AIA, vice president of project development & strategy. “One of our firm’s core values is the belief that we are better

The new employees include Senior Project Manager Joe Riassetto, Project Manager Andrew Bernard, Assistant Project Manager Ryan Favier and Project Engineers Andrew Goetz, James Schiber-Arciga and Paityn Jansen. “Holland will reach several new milestones in 2022 including record revenue and number of new employees,” said Holland’s President Mike Marchal. “We have added 25 new team members since January and will add another 15 over the next several months. MEMBER NEW HOLLAND CONSTRUCTION SERVICES HIRES SCOTT HENDRICKS AS VICE PRESIDENT OF INDUSTRIAL Holland Construction Services is proud to announce it has hired Scott Hendricks to serve in the newly created position of Vice President of Industrial. Hendricks has spent nearly two decades in the construction industry, including an earlier stint at Holland in the pre-construction department. His experience includes pre-construction and estimating, project development, and client relations. Holland’s President Mike Marchal said they decided to create this position based on the increasing amount of industrial construction work Holland is managing, including the most recent project for Volpi Foods’ new 87,000-square-foot meat slicing and packaging facility. “Scott’s return to Holland has been a blessing for our team,” said Marchal. “Scott was with us for seven years and has since amassed a wealth of knowledge and expertise around not just the industrial market, but the construction business in general. We are excited to have Scott’s leadership to grow our industrial division and to help us provide an even better experience for all our clients.” Comparing his experience in the industrial market to that of the multi-family market, for example, Hendricks said there are several differences in time and resources when it comes down to building an industrial property versus a multifamily property. The average multi-family project takes 18 months to two years to complete, whereas an industrial warehouse can be built in as little as six months, with less staff. Hendricks said his role will allow for more growth within the industrial market. “My goal in this role with Holland is to use my connections with industrial construction teams across the country to grow, maintain and expand Holland’s relationships,” said Hendricks. “The industrial market is growing, and Holland Construction Services is rapidly expanding into new markets. My role will be client-focused and work on coordinating projects between the operations team and the developer.” Hendricks will be working in Holland’s new St. Louis office which is set to open this fall. He is one of 25 new team members Holland Construction Services has added this year, with another 15 expected to be added by the end of 2022. MEMBER TIPS WHY THE CALL TO HOSPICE SHOULDN’T WAIT BY DR. ELLEN MIDDENDORF The hospice philosophy of care focuses on quality of life. When a cure is no longer possible, hospice care is designed to treat the whole person and not just the disease. Thus, it behooves an individual and their loved ones to call hospice sooner. The patient and family can take advantage of all the benefits that hospice and its interdisciplinary team can provide. Unfortunately, per the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, in 2018, the average length of stay for Medicare patients enrolled in hospice was only 89.6 days with the median length of service being 18 days. Hospice of Southern Illinois can offer comfort and support for any individual with a prognosis of 6 months or less. This report shows the underutilization of this compassionate service. Call Hospice Sooner For Comfort & Support By collaborating with attending providers to discuss hospice care earlier in the course of a terminal illness, patients can often participate in all planning and decision making, allowing them to maintain a sense of control. Families then have time to prepare for the changes they will face. Further, it helps reduce the risk of complicated grief. The hospice care team manages pain and symptoms sooner. Therefore, ensuring improved quality of life, and crises can be avoided. Hospitalizations can be reduced or often eliminated. Preparation of an advanced directive helps avoid difficult decisions later. Perhaps the most important benefit is the sustained relationship with the hospice team for the patient and their family. Hospice also provides a financial benefit by supplying all medical supplies, equipment and medications related to the terminal illness. Grief and bereavement counseling is another benefit for family members. When needed, prebereavement counseling will be initiated. Hospice social workers are experts at providing emotional, social and psychological support. Hospice of Southern Illinois has been your community, not-for-profit hospice for 40 years. We take great pride in partnering with your medical provider. There comes a time when compassionate care is the best care.
