COVER STORY Online shopping sure is easy. Sit in front of your computer in your comfy clothes, click a few times, and the item arrives on your doorstep. But take a moment to think about the impact online shopping has on our community. Every time you “click” to shop, a local retailer suffers. Our local retailers rely on your walk-in business to survive. Without a continual stream of customers, we could potentially lose the small retailers who make our community unique. In recent years, shopping small has become a popular topic, especially around the holidays. American Express created the holiday, Small Business Saturday, in 2010 to support the small businesses that keep our nation running, occurring the Saturday immediately following the ever popular Black Friday. Additionally, the local economy suffers when you shop online. All local governments see a decrease in revenue every time a person “clicks” instead of visiting a local store. When you shop locally, the sales tax you pay funds our police, fire, streets, and park & rec departments. When a consumer buys local, significantly more of that money stays in the community. In fact, one Chicago study found that for every $100 spent at a local business, $68 remained in the city while only $43 of each $100 spent at a chain retailer. With the financial state of affairs in Illinois State Government, we all know our local municipalities can use all of the revenue they can get to continue to provide needed services. So what are the personal benefits when you shop locally? You receive: 1. Unique items. 2. Exceptional personal customer service. 3. A chance to try things out or on before purchasing. 4. An environmentally greener item – no individual packaging for shipping. 5. A healthier family - When you buy from local farmers, you have access to fruits and vegetables that you know are chemical free, as well as grass-fed meats, fresh eggs, and dairy from cows that feast on local green grass each day. 6. A personal connection - When you personally know the people behind the business where you’re buying local products and services, you enjoy a connection you would not otherwise have. 7. Knowledge you are supporting a shop owner’s American dream. Being a part of the Chamber of Commerce, we see how online shopping affects our local businesses. Belleville’s small retailers are struggling against the lure of online shopping. These shop owners, as well as other nearby communities, are stocked up for holiday shoppers and are ready and eager for customers to walk through the door. We are making a pledge to shop as much as possible at these smaller retailers to keep our downtown alive and vibrant. Think Big. Shop Small. Grow Belleville. Will you join us in doing the same? LEADERSHIP BELLEVILLE Law Enforcement & Legal Day The 2019-2020 Leadership Belleville Class continued their program on November 22nd with Law Enforcement Day. After spending time working with their Performance Enhancement Panel group, the class began with a presentation on Correctional Mental Health by Misty Clemens, LCPC, Forensic Therapist. This was followed by a panel discussion & open question period with leading attorneys and judges from the area. Next, Col. William Clay III, City of Belleville Police Chief, spoke on the role of the Police Chief and the group took a tour of the police station and jail. After lunch, the class traveled to the St. Clair County Jail for a tour and inmate panel. While there the class also learned about the role of Sheriff Richard Watson and how the polygraph process work. A definite highlight was wrapping up the day with a K-9 demonstration. When my employer told me I was being chosen to be a part of Leadership Belleville, I was not aware of the scope and size of the honor. After the first meeting and retreat, the reality of the opportunity began to set in. I was impressed by the level of talented individuals in this year’s Leadership Belleville cohort. I already feel a part of a family. I look forward to what our friendship and connections can do for Belleville and the region. I thank the Belleville Chamber of Commerce and the Leadership Belleville team for the opportunity to improve my leadership skills.
Belleville Leadership has been very rewarding so far. I think I was expecting just some fun out of the office field trips, but it has been much more. I am a lifelong Belleville resident and intend to raise a family here with my wife. Last month we toured some of the local schools and met with teachers and students. I found myself thinking, “I want that teacher for my kid,” and “I hope my kid is a student like that.” The speakers have also been fantastic discussing leadership and personal growth. It has made me set some personal goals on how to be more effective in my office and for my clients.
It has been a great honor and privilege to be able to be a class 2019-2020 member of Leadership Belleville. It is an excellent leadership program that teaches effective leadership skills to help impact not just people in the workplace but also the community. After each session I feel more equipped with knowledge and skills to help empower staff and the community. Leadership Belleville have certainly help me become more aware of the great community we live in and ways that we can help improve it. The lessons learned, the support and the networking of classmates is second to none that I have ever experienced. Thank you Vertical Performance and to the Belleville Chamber for providing such a great program that not only will change an organization but also a community.

EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT Whiteside District 115 Whiteside School began as a one-room schoolhouse in the 1850s, founded by William and Olive (Messenger) Whiteside. Today, Whiteside Elementary School and Whiteside Middle School serve over 1300 students in prekindergarten through 8th grade. Students at both schools participate and have an opportunity to experience many different enriching programs. Currently, our elementary students have wrapped up a school-wide service project during the month of October collecting money for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This initiative continues to provide assistance to meet the basic needs of children around the world. Our students also bring in leftover candy from trick-or-treating for our Treats for Troops activity to show support for our U.S. Armed Forces. Then throughout the school year, the elementary hosts the “best of the best” recognition where students and community members will be honored at a school-wide assembly. Our November 8th assembly announced the Fall Character Award nominees and recipients. Secondgrade students also provided a Veterans’ Day program to honor current and former U. S. Armed Forces members. These students proudly displayed their character during a moving ensemble of songs and messages to commemorate this event. At Whiteside Middle School students are engaged in many activities. Our National Junior Honor Society and Student Council promote several service projects throughout the year. These include blood drives and a holiday toy drive. Students, teachers, and our administrative team are constantly working to create local clubs or projects that support our students. Just recently the Weekend Warrior Food Project was created, our school supports the communities summer meals program, we have a mentoring group, as well as a partnership with the Violence Prevention Center just to name a few. I am also happy to see programs being homegrown such as the Whiteside Cafe. Where students learn life skills and build confidence by helping to run a small business. While new programs are constantly being added, we still have our Warriors of Whiteside (WOW) and Guidance in Operation (GO team ) who sponsor a fall festival and winter game night. Students are also involved in many academic events including Spelling Bee, Math & Science Night, Read-A-Thon, and Teen Trivia Night. Our incredible Whiteside band had the honor of performing at a Cardinals’ game this fall. Many opportunities are afforded to Whiteside students as a result of a dedicated and skilled faculty, staff and administration at both school buildings. Middle School teachers Mary Stratton and Mike Murakami were recognized from the Illinois State Board of Education’s prestigious Those Who Excel Awards. Mrs. Stratton was selected for her work as one of the state’s Early Career Educators. While Mr. Murakami was in the running for Teacher of the Year within the State of Illinois. Mrs. Julie Crask recently received this year’s Emerson of Excellence in Teaching Award. Whiteside also recognizes our staffs’ dedication to our students with special needs through our Judy Plassmeyer Award. Judy Plassmeyer was a long-time educator and speech-language pathologist who had a passion for serving special education students. The foundation for all of our students’ successes is grounded in the commitment of families and our parent organizations. Our Parent Teacher Club supports many of our student and family activities with funds raised through events such as Glo-Bingo and Trivia Nights. In addition to this our Whiteside Foundation, through their annual Golf Tournament, funds several classroom grants. It truly takes a village to educate, support, and encourage our students. Whiteside School District is ever so grateful for the efforts of all of these groups.

In November the Chamber was honored to have the Belleville CEO high school class visit the office to talk with them about what all we do for the community. This year’s Belleville CEO class consists of 17 high school students that mix from Belleville East, West, Althoff Catholic and home-schooled. The program provides comprehensive educational experience for the community’s high school students, equipping them to be the enterprising individual and entrepreneurial thinkers who contribute to the economic development of our County. MEMBER UPDATES HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Nationally Recognized with an ‘A’ For the Fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital was awarded an ‘A’ in fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing St. Elizabeth’s achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization driven by employers and other purchasers of health care committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to all general hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care. St. Elizabeth’s President and CEO Patti Fischer said, “I am extremely proud of our colleagues, physicians and other health care partners for their excellence in providing quality patient care. Receiving this top ‘A’ rating from The Leapfrog Group for three cohorts in a row is a testament to how we consistently and proactively elevate our quality and patient safety processes.” Fischer also referenced the hospital’s accomplishments during a recent survey by The Joint Commission, in particular that there were zero infection control findings from the four-day site visit. “The quality department implements numerous initiatives and process improvement projects to be sure every aspect of care and our environment is reviewed, and colleagues are engaged to always put patient safety first.” “‘A’ hospitals show us their leadership is protecting patients from preventable medical harm and error,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes genuine commitment at every level – from clinicians to administrators to the board of directors – and we congratulate the teams who have worked so hard to earn this A.” Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. St. Elizabeth’s was awarded an ‘A’ grade today, when Leapfrog announced grades for the fall 2019 update. MEMBER UPDATES Belleville Fire Department Sets Ceremony to Honor Fallen Brothers The Belleville Fire Department will host its Line of Duty Death Memorial Dedication Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. honoring three fallen firemen who died while on duty in the early 20th Century. “These men are the only firefighters in the history of the department to lose their lives while on duty, and we thought it proper to acknowledge their service and show our gratitude to their surviving family members,” said Fire Chief Tom Pour. MEMBER UPDATES Drs. Salil K. and Vandana Gupta Family Endowment Excellence Award winners announced HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation and hospital leadership congratulate the 2019 recipients of the Drs. Salil K. and Vandana Gupta Family Endowment Excellence Awards. Donna Meyers, MSN, RN, director of Mission Integration and Peggy Boron, RNC-OB, a staff nurse and educator from the Women and Infants Center were selected to receive the award. The endowment and awards were established through the generosity of the Gupta family to annually recognize two St. Elizabeth’s Hospital colleagues who exhibit a clear commitment to the mission, vision and values of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. Award recipients were nominated by their peers and then selected through a blind review process by committee. Meyers and Boron were selected because of their outstanding commitment to St. Elizabeth’s core values of Respect, Care, Competence, and Joy, as well as their notable support of the Franciscan mission of Hospital Sisters Health System. “I am both privileged and humbled to receive this award,” shared Meyers, of O’Fallon, Illinois. “I had the honor of knowing Dr. Gupta while he was on staff at St. Elizabeth’s and he was a wonderful role model who lived the mission and commitment of our Hospital Sisters of St. Francis. It is an honor to be recognized by Dr. Gupta and the endowment excellence award.”

Dr. Salil Gupta was on the medical staff at St. Elizabeth’s for over 20 years. He was instrumental in growing the neonatal/intermediate care nursery and protocols to elevate the care offered to premature babies delivered at the hospital. Boron, of Belleville, who has worked in St. Elizabeth’s Women and Infants Center for over 40 years, shared she has always had a passion for working in OB. She said, “I am honored to be recognized for the work that I do in the Women and Infants Center, and I am especially honored to be recognized by Dr. Gupta. I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Gupta during his time at St. Elizabeth’s and I learned so much from him. I greatly respect his professionalism and knowledge, which makes receiving this award very special.” To honor the Guptas’ wishes, one colleague serving in a management position and a second colleague who specifically works in the Women and Infants Center are nominated and honored with this award annually. Hospital leadership congratulates both colleagues for their continued success in competently and compassionately serving the many patients, visitors, and colleagues who hold them in such high regard. MEMBER UPDATES LUTHY JOINS LOUER FACILITY PLANNING Brittany Luthy has joined Louer Facility Planning as an Interior Designer to work with its commercial clients on workplace design. Brittany recently graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science Degree, Interior Design Specialty. At SIUC, she was the president of the student chapter of IIDA (International Interior Design Association), and was chosen to represent her class in the “Next” student design competition which is a national event. She also represented her class as at the IIDA Student Design Charette at Neocon, the premier commercial furniture exhibition and conference held each year in Chicago. “I am pleased that Brittany has chosen to join our team of design professionals,” said Jane Louer, the Collinsville-based firm’s founder and president. “She brings a fresh new perspective, and a lot of enthusiasm to our team.” Louer Facility Planning has been in business for 23 years, offering the latest trends and innovations in smart workspace furniture for clients across the St. Louis metro region. MindsEye offers TWO Audio Description tours of the WAY OF LIGHTS to their blind and visually-impaired patrons! MindsEye is thrilled to announce for the first time they will be providing Audio Description for two Way of Lights tours this winter! The tours will take place at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows on Tuesday, December 10th 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, December 14th from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Descriptions of the lights display at the Shrine and Legos Museum will be provided for participants. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Way of Lights. This one-and-a-half-mile drive features over a million lights telling the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. Life-size biblical statues and electro-art scenes take you on the journey to Bethlehem. Audio description allows people who are visually impaired to take full advantage of theater productions, art shows, and museum exhibits. It’s a similar idea to sign language. MindsEye will be describing these light displays and scenes to the visually impaired. MindsEye translates vision into audio and provides radio readings of local and national print media to the Greater Saint Louis Area in addition to serving the community through its Audio Description Program and Beepball. Manufacturing Day 20K Donation During the recent Southwestern Illinois College Manufacturing Day celebration, Haas Automation, Inc., donated $20,000 to SWIC for funding of the Manufacturing Day event and for technology education scholarships. Students also enjoyed equipment demonstrations, visits with 42 exhibitors, plus tours of 15 area manufacturing companies. The event was one of the largest Manufacturing Day open houses in the state. MEMBER UPDATES Prairie Cardiovascular Names New President John A. Scherschel, MD, FACC, FHRS has been named president of Prairie Cardiovascular in Springfield. Dr. Scherschel is the fourth president in the group’s 40-year history and succeeds Marc E. Shelton, MD, FACC, FESC, who was appointed vice president and chief physician executive of Hospital Sisters Health System in March. Prior to being named president, Dr. Scherschel served as a clinical cardiac electrophysiologist at Prairie since 2014. “It has been a privilege to care for patients alongside the talented and committed providers and colleagues at Prairie,” said Dr. Scherschel. “The last five years have given me insight into this tremendous organization, and I am honored to take the lead and continue the tradition of providing world-class care to the residents of central and southern Illinois.” Dr. Scherschel received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Ball State University and his doctor of medicine degree from Indiana University School of Medicine where he also did his internal medicine residency and later served as chief resident in medicine. He completed his fellowship in cardiovascular disease and was a postdoctoral research fellow as well as a fellow in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the Krannert Institute of Cardiology at Indiana University School of Medicine. He and his wife Catherine have three children, Elizabeth, Christopher and Caroline. He enjoys boating, biking, gardening and spending time with family. Dr. Scherschel is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society and the American College of Cardiology where he sits on the Electrophysiology Council. Dr. Scherschel’s new title became effective October 21, following approval by the HSHS Board of Directors. He will continue seeing patients in a limited capacity.

MEMBER UPDATES McKendree University Board Names Daniel C. Dobbins President Daniel Lett, chairman of the McKendree University Board of Trustees, announced today that at the Saturday, Nov. 3, 2019, board meeting, Daniel C. Dobbins was elected the 33rd president of McKendree University. Dobbins will take office on Jan. 1, 2020. He succeeds Dr. James M. Dennis, who announced his retirement as president earlier this year and leaves the University after 26 years of service. Dobbins is presently the president of Fiber Bond Corporation of Michigan City, Ind., a post he has held since 2008. Fiber Bond is the industry leader in the manufacturing of air filtration systems for commercial use in major corporations and hospitals across the U.S. A 1981 graduate of McKendree University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Dobbins went on to earn a master’s degree in business administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1985.

Immediately following his graduation from McKendree University, Dobbins started his service to his alma mater by providing philanthropic support, a practice he has continued since 1981. In 1987, he became the president of the McKendree University Alumni Association Board and by virtue of his office, began his service as a member of the Board of Trustees. During his 32 years of service on the Board, Dobbins served as chair of the Resource Development Committee from 1992 to 1998 and served as chair of the Financial Affairs Committee and treasurer from 1998 to 2005. In 2005, he became vice chair of the Board and in 2007, chairman of the Board of Trustees, a position he held until 2015. In 1999, Dobbins received the Peter Akers Award, the most prestigious honor the McKendree Alumni Association bestows on an alumnus. During the 2015 Commencement ceremony, the University conferred on him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of his service and his leadership as board chair. “I view the opportunity to serve McKendree University as its next president as a continued call to service,” said Dobbins. “I am deeply committed to the mission of this great University and it has been a privilege for me to work on behalf of its students and all of the members of the McKendree community as a volunteer. As I begin this new chapter in my relationship with the University, I am deeply humbled and excited by the opportunity to continue that service as president and I am grateful for the strong and enduring leadership of Jim Dennis, who has left a lasting legacy on which we will have the opportunity to build.” The Board of Trustees contracted Storbeck Pimentel & Associates of Whittier, Calif., to assist with the search for Dennis’ successor. “The Board is grateful to the members of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee who provided meaningful input into the search for a new president,” said Chairman Lett. “Dan Dobbins’ business acumen, together with his long volunteer service and knowledge of the University make him an ideal candidate to lead McKendree at this time. We were fortunate that early in our process we found an outstanding person with unparalleled passion for the University in our midst,” said Lett as he announced the appointment. “As we make this important transition in the life of the University, we are grateful for the accomplishments achieved as a result of Jim Dennis’ leadership,” said Lett. “He sought to breathe new life and vitality into this institution when he came to the University in 1994—and he has done so by every measure. The McKendree University community has been transformed by his service and we are indeed grateful for his leadership.” Dobbins, a native of Pittsfield, Ill., and his wife Michaelene (Mickey) are residents of O’Fallon, Ill. Mickey Dobbins is also a 1981 graduate of McKendree University and a donor, volunteer and former employee. They are the parents of one daughter.
