COVER STORY 70th annual Enlisted Dinner Honors Men & Women of Scott Air Force Base & four Veterans After having to cancel the 70th Annual Enlisted Dinner the day of the event in March of 2020 as the pandemic started, the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce’s Belle-Scott Committee was finally able to host their 70th Enlisted Dinner on Thursday, November 18 at The Shrine Banquet Center to honor the enlisted men and women of Scott Air Force Base and thank them for their bravery, commitment, and sacrifice to our nation. This is an annual, sold-out event that reminds the community each year of the important role Scott Air Force Base plays in the metro-east. “The Enlisted Dinner is Belleville’s opportunity to show our deep appreciation to Scott’s enlisted members for their service and sacrifice,” said Geri Boyer, the Belle-Scott Committee Civilian Chairman. “It is also our chance to honor a few local veterans and tell their stories of bravery and remarkable resilience.” The Belle-Scott Committee, once known as “The Belleville Plan”, has been in existence since 1950 working to promote good relations between Belleville and Scott Air Force Base. The plan was announced at the First G.I. Pal Dinner (later known as the Belle-Scott Enlisted Dinner) which was held November 29, 1950, at the U.S.O. Canteen in Belleville. “The Belle-Scott Committee was established in 1950 to promote a positive relationship between the local business community and the Base,” said Boyer. “Belle-Scott was formed because this was not always the case. Many veterans we have honored tell us that only recently have they been thanked for their service. We want the members of the military and veterans of our community to know how much we cherish and value their sacrifice and service and this dinner gives Belleville an opportunity to do that in a very personal way.” The dinner included remarks from Rick Vernier (St. Clair County), Mayor Patty Gregory (City of Belleville), and Col. Rob Lowe III (375th Air Mobility Wing). A special response was also given by A1C Ethan Moser. During the event, three U.S. war veterans were also honored as special guests including Robert Elder (Navy, recently deceased), Leroy “Wes” Scheller (Air Force, 92, Belleville, IL), and Don Jerome (Army, 86, Belleville, IL). Terry Foerste, a Belle-Scott committee member and fellow Vietnam veteran, also received the Golden Eagle award. He assists the committee doing interviews with veterans and composes biographies of the honorees that he then presents during the event. “The stories of all veterans are eventually going to disappear. I think it’s important that we record their stories when we can.” - Terry Foerste

MEMBER UPDATES EXTRAORDINARY NURSES TO BE RECOGNIZED AT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL BELLEVILLE | SHILOH THROUGH DAISY AWARD PROGRAM Nurses at Memorial Hospital Belleville |Shiloh will be honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses ®. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s mission to recognize the extraordinary, compassionate nursing care they provide patients and families every day. This award program at Memorial is being sponsored by Memorial Foundation, Inc. Nurses may be nominated by patients, families, and colleagues. The award recipient is chosen by a committee at Memorial to receive The DAISY Award. Awards are presented each month at celebrations attended by the honoree’s colleagues, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him as an “Extraordinary Nurse.” The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” Honorees also receive a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. Memorial plans to recognize its first Daisy Award winner in December. The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. President and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation Bonnie Barnes, FAAN said, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human, extraordinary, compassionate work they do.” “We are proud to be among the healthcare organizations participating in the DAISY Award program,” said Terri Halloran, RN, chief nursing officer and vice president of patient care services for Memorial Hospital Belleville | Shiloh. “Nurses are heroes every day. It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued and The Daisy Foundation provides a way for us to do that.” If you would like to recognize an extraordinary nurse at Memorial Belleville | Shiloh, please go to https://www.memhosp. org/daisy-award and complete a nomination form. In addition, nomination forms are available in various locations throughout both hospital campuses.

MEMBER UPDATES HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Receives 2021 Press Ganey Guardian Of Excellence Award® Hospital earns national distinction as a top performer in clinical quality HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital today announced it has been named a 2021 Guardian of Excellence Award® winner by Press Ganey, the national leader in health care consumer and workforce engagement. Press Ganey recognizes St. Elizabeth’s as a top-performing health care organization achieving the 95th percentile or above for performance in clinical quality. The Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award® is a preeminent, competitive achievement for leading health care organizations. Presented annually, the award applauds hospitals and health systems that consistently sustained performance in the top 5% of all Press Ganey clients. “Press Ganey is honored to recognize HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital as one of the nation’s leaders in clinical quality,” said Patrick T. Ryan, chairman and chief executive officer, Press Ganey. “This award reflects an unwavering commitment to earn the trust and loyalty of patients throughout unimaginable challenges. We are humbled by HSHS St. Elizabeth’s incredible efforts, and their ability to adapt to imperatives of COVID-19 on top of the increasing demand for consumerism in health care.” Some of the quality initiatives put into place over the past year which have helped achieve clinical excellence focused on hospital acquired C. difficile infection reduction, reduction in surgical site infections and readmission rates, to name a few. “We are truly honored to receive the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for clinical quality,” said HSHS St. Elizabeth’s President and Chief Executive Officer Patti Fischer. “Despite the challenges they faced over the past year and half, our colleagues and medical staff remained committed to provide exceptional, high-quality care to our patients. I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts to elevate the care they provide to those who chose St. Elizabeth’s for their care.” Fischer further explained that Press Ganey’s Guardian of Excellence Award® demonstrates that the metro-east region can receive top-rated care close to home. In addition to HSHS St. Elizabeth’s, another hospital in Hospital Sisters Health System that has achieved the 2021 Press Ganey Guardian Of Excellence Award for clinical quality is HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham. MEMBER UPDATES McKendree University Recognized for Excellence in Student Voter Engagement On Monday, Nov. 8, the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge hosted its third biennial awards ceremony to recognize select higher education institutions, educators and students for their extraordinary work in student voter engagement during the 2020 presidential election. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and most students learning virtually, the honorees ensured students across the country could cast their ballots. The 2020 presidential election engaged the largest and most diverse group of college students in U.S. history. McKendree University received the 2021 Silver Seal for achieving a student voting rate between 60 and 69 percent, a sharp incline from 2018’s 30 to 39 percent. More than 840 institutions enrolling close to nine million students participate in the ALL IN Challenge. Dr. Ann Collins, professor of political science, led the ALL IN Democracy Challenge and nonpartisan voter engagement activities on campus, along with Jennifer Funk, M.A.Ed. ’14, co-chair of the ALL IN Committee. “We are happy to receive this national recognition,” Dr. Collins said. “Our students realize that their voices matter – at all levels of government. They’re getting out to vote because they know it’s important to their lives and to their futures.” The 2020 election cycle saw unprecedented voter registration and turnout among college students, according to the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE), a research study of the Institute for Democracy in Higher Education (IDHE) at the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University. “The rise in voter participation and engagement for college students in last year’s presidential election amidst a global pandemic was tremendous and will undoubtedly be tied to the tireless efforts of the dedicated students, faculty, administrators and partner organizations that are part of the ALL IN Challenge network,” said Jen Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. “The hard work of these trailblazing honorees will help support many of the country’s future leaders in fulfilling the equitable, engaged vision of democracy to which we aspire.” The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge is a nonpartisan, national initiative recognizing and supporting campuses as they work to increase nonpartisan democratic engagement and full student voter participation. The Challenge encourages higher education institutions to help students form the habits of active and informed citizenship, and make democratic participation a core value on their campus. To learn more or see the full list of winning campuses, please visit www.allinchallenge.org/awards-ceremony.

While volunteering, Illinois American Water employees follow Illinois American Water and CDC guidelines to support safety, including social distancing and wearing a face covering. Whenever possible volunteer opportunities are held virtually or outside, or completed on an individual level. Illinois American Water President Justin Ladner is proud of employees for “finding unique opportunities, both individually and virtually to give back.” He said, “Our employees have giving hearts and want to contribute to the communities we serve, while remaining safe. MEMBER UPDATES Get in step with a running performance evaluation by a dorsaVi™ trained therapist HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Outpatient Therapy is offering a running performance program to accurately assess and improve body movement and muscle activity. These screenings are administered by completing a series of movements while wearing advanced sensor technology and the use of dorsaVi™ Movement Suite, movement assessment software used to review information gathered from the sensors to provide insight on how to improve performance. The running performance program is conducted by a running experienced and dorsaVi™ trained physical therapist. It is designed to ensure you are running as efficient as possible to reduce the risk of injury and optimize your performance. From beginner to advanced runners, this is targeted for all abilities. “We find that almost 50% of recreational runners get injured at some point. Running injuries are often caused by poor body mechanics, muscle overuse or even wearing the wrong type or mis-sized shoes,” said physical therapist Kristen Busch, PT, DPT, from St. Elizabeth’s Outpatient Therapy. Busch is one of two therapists on site trained to administer the dorsaVi™ Movement Suite running program. Individuals in St. Elizabeth’s running performance program will go through an examination process that assesses strength, stability, flexibility and mobility specific to running. A thorough, objective gait analysis using the dorsaVi™ system is then performed. This system uses wireless sensors to provide a cutting-edge gait analysis, providing data that the eye alone cannot capture. Each runner is then educated on findings and instructed in a fitness regimen designed to address findings. The program can provide information to understand how fatigue and external conditions affect an athlete’s running style or performance over long distances. “We are excited to be able to offer these screenings to the community, said Tom Dibadj, director of St. Elizabeth’s Outpatient Therapy. “By utilizing these advanced tools, you will not only learn about improving performance, but avoiding injury as well. Injuries can have a long-lasting effect, and the dorsaVi™ equipment can provide the opportunity to correct a problem to reduce the chance of injury.” Those participating should plan on 2-4 sessions with a dorsiVi certified physical therapist. The first session will consist of the screening and will take approximately an hour and a half to complete. Follow up sessions will be for reviewing your results and adding exercises/techniques to improve your performance”. To schedule an appointment or learn more, call 618-624-3668. This program may be billed to insurance based on approval from individual plan or can be self-pay.

MEMBER UPDATES Know the Signs of Diabetes to Get Help You Need HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at HSHS Medical Group and HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Wound Care Center are educating the community about diabetes prevention and management during National Diabetes Awareness Month. Since 1991, World Diabetes Day has been observed Nov. 14 each year in response to growing concerns about the rise of diabetes around the world. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), more than 463 million adults throughout the world currently have diabetes. That equates to one in 11 people living with the disease. Most cases of diabetes are type 2 diabetes, which is largely preventable through regular physical activity and a healthy and balanced diet. “Symptoms of type 2 diabetes often develop slowly and can be subtle,” says Jeanette Martineau, RN, BSN, clinical program director at St. Elizabeth’s Wound Care Center. “Many people with the disease have no symptoms. That’s why it’s important to know the signs so you can watch for even small changes in these areas.” It’s also why your doctor may test you for it if you’re at risk, even if you don’t have symptoms. Knowing the symptoms of diabetes can be helpful in the prevention and treatment of the disease. The IDF estimates one in two people with diabetes remain undiagnosed. Symptoms can be mild and go unnoticed, but they include: • Frequent urination • Feeling thirsty • Feeling hungry, even when eating • Extreme fatigue • Blurry vision • Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal • Weight loss • Tingling, pain or numbness in hands and feet Because these symptoms could be caused by a number of things, talk with your doctor if any of these symptoms persist for you. He/she can evaluate your risk and completed bloodwork which can diagnose diabetes. You can also take a oneminute Diabetes Risk Test through the American Diabetes Association to find out if you are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The risk test can be found at diabetes.org/risk-test. The good news is – you can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Even if you have prediabetes, there are many factors you can control, such as diet and physical activity. Prediabetes is a condition that can lead to type 2 diabetes and even heart disease. Seeing a dietitian and diabetes educator early on can help prevent diabetes and complications from uncontrolled diabetes. Local Services Available St. Elizabeth’s Wound Care Center offers an advanced, comprehensive wound care program to manage chronic or nonhealing wounds caused by diabetes, circulatory problems, and other conditions. Patients can be seen with or without a physician’s referral. Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at HSHS Medical Group has locations in Decatur, Effingham, O’Fallon, and Springfield, Illinois.
