COVER STORY chamber honors area leaders at annual dinner

Over 400 business and community members joined the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce Thursday night for their Annual Dinner and Silent Auction at the St. Clair County Event Center where the Chamber awarded seven area leaders in the community. Breakthru Beverage & The Callison Family, Eckert Florist, FKG Oil Company, and Hanks Excavating & Landscaping, Inc. were awarded Business Excellence awards. Terri Dambacher (CompuType IT Solutions), Susan Barsaloux (Chiro-med Belleville), and Mark Turner (Memorial Hospital) were awarded individual awards. Terri Dambacher, the recipient of the Ambassador of the Year award, served as Chair of the Ambassador Committee in 2019. She has volunteered with the Chamber for multiple years and been involved in many different Chamber events. She has also been a multi-year participant in the Chamber’s Total Resource Campaign. Susan Barsaloux was honored the Leadership Belleville Alumni of the Year award and is a graduate of the Belleville Chamber’s 2011 Leadership Belleville Class. Susan continues to use the expertise she learned during the program, which includes the value of community, through her continued support of the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce and other organizations throughout the community. What started as part of her Leadership Belleville adventure, she built the Annual Chiro-Med of Belleville Winter Luau 5K and Main Street Mile, which donates thousands of dollars to Special Olympics, and has continued to do so for the last 10 years. She is the past co-race director of the Get Up & Go Biathlon. She has been a board member of the YMCA and a Specialist for the Get Up & Go Movement. She is also a member of the Belleville Running Club. She can be seen volunteering at many community events. Her dedication to community spirit is seen in all that she does. Mark Turner was honored as the 2019 Citizen of the Year. Turner is the president for Memorial Hospital in Belleville and exhibits integrity and compassion; truly caring about those he works with and the patients they serve throughout the community. He has led significant growth during his time as president including the construction and opening of the Orthopedic and Neurosciences Center, Memorial Hospital East, and the building of two medical officed on East’s campus including the new Siteman Cancer Center. Under his leadership, the hospital has also been recognized in the top 6% of hospitals nationwide in 2018. Turner also serves on multiple leadership boards throughout the community. In addition to the individual awards, Breakthru Beverage & The Callison Family, Eckert Florist, FKG Oil Company, and Hanks Excavating & Landscaping, Inc. were presented Business Excellence Awards, the most prestigious award given by the Chamber to businesses that best show evidence of success given a company’s expansion and financial accomplishments, development and/or utilization of innovative or creative business methods, and contributions to community. LEADERSHIP BELLEVILLE Business Day On January 17, the 2019-2020 Leadership Belleville Class took part in Healthcare, Aging & Community Service Day. The day began with breakfast at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital where Alison Tindall, Executive Director of Business Development and Oncology Services at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, addressed the group about industry trends and updates on HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. The class then took a tour of the facility to learn more about what they offer. The day was cut short due to the weather but PSOP Senior Companion Program Director, Carla Boswell, and Joy Paeth, CEO of AgeSmart Community, shared with the group some details on the services and programs their agencies offer. My experience with Leadership Belleville so far has been very satisfying. The retreat was a great experience. The instructors made the experience easy and fun! I was surprised how quickly we all bonded as group with their guidance. I enjoy our reflection time with our groups, which allows us to look at the goals we have set for ourselves and see where we are at. We can also look for guidance and give guidance within our groups. Each outing we have had, I have truly enjoyed. Hearing from our educators, officers and the history of the community of Belleville has been very eye opening. I always look forward to Leadership Belleville days!

HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Announces Prenatal Education Program Classes for 2020 Pregnant moms can get all their “what to expect” pregnancy questions answered by attending any or all of the Prenatal Education programs offered by HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in the coming year. St. Elizabeth’s Women and Infants Center offers a wide range of services for mothers and infants, and the class schedule for 2020 is now available. It includes Prepared Childbirth Classes, Breastfeeding Fundamentals; a Sibling Preparation Class; and other education about the amenities and quality at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. Classes are taught by a Registered Nurse from St. Elizabeth’s Women and Infant Center and are open to any mom-to-be and their support person. According to the March of Dimes, prenatal education is an important component of supporting healthy pregnancies. Prenatal education promotes the maintenance of healthy lifestyles during pregnancy and helps expectant mothers manage stress, support a healthy diet, avoid harmful chemicals and situations, recognize warning signs and symptoms that mean something may be wrong with their pregnancy, as well as prepare for labor and delivery. St. Elizabeth’s Women and Infants Center is recognized by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program, created by Cribs for Kids, as a Bronze Safe Sleep Hospital. The hospital also has a partnership with SSM Health Cardinal Glennon pediatricians who provide coverage 24/7. These pediatricians care for babies admitted to the Well or Intermediate Care Nurseries. The Intermediate Care Nursery is also staffed with specially trained nurses to care for babies born with special health care needs. Hospital is part of the Southern Illinois Division of Hospital Sisters Health System, which also includes HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, HSHS Holy Family Hospital in Greenville and HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.

MEMBER UPDATES SCHEFFEL BOYLE CPAS SENDS CARE PACKAGES FOR 2019 SHARES PROJECT Scheffel Boyle CPAs closed out 2019 by completing its annual service project for the firm’s Scheffel Boyle Shares program. The team is excited to announce that a total of 34 care packages have been shipped to deployed servicemen and women. Each year, employees of the local CPA firm team together to complete a community service project for the Shares program. For its 2019 Shares, the team decided to organize a Friends Trivia Night to raise funds for care packages for deployed troops. The Trivia Night, held in mid-November, raised more than $1,400 to go toward the project and received a carload of donations for the packages themselves from participants. “Our goal is always to give back to our local communities, and most of these deployed soldiers are either from our local area or have connections here,” said Principal Scott Weber, CPA. “We were amazed at the response to our trivia night and how many donations we received for the packages. We’ve even heard back from a few of the soldiers, so it’s been exciting to see all the hard work come to fruition.” Just before Christmas, the firm mailed the 34 packages to 10 soldiers and one troop currently stationed overseas in Iraq, Afghanistan, Italy, Jordan, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea. The soldiers received a variety of treats, personalized “wish list” items, basic hygiene essentials, and notes of appreciation and encouragement. “On behalf of our firm, we wanted to thank everyone who participated and donated toward this Shares project,” Weber said. “And, of course, thank you to our soldiers who sacrifice for our freedoms. We appreciate your service.” Scheffel Boyle’s offices are located in Alton, Edwardsville, Belleville, Highland, Jerseyville, Columbia, and Carrollton, IL. SWIC RED BUD CAMPUS TO HOST ANNUAL POETRY CONTEST The Southwestern Illinois College Red Bud Campus will host its annual poetry contest for area students and residents this spring. Individuals of all ages are invited to showcase their creative abilities in the contest through poetry. Divisions for entries are as follows: adult, high school, eighth grade, seventh grade, sixth grade, fifth grade and fourth grade. Each contestant is allowed to submit one poem and all entries must be turned in with a completed entry form by 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 28, 2020. Entry forms can be found online at swic.edu/poetry-contest and submissions can be mailed to Amy Brockman at 2500 Carlyle Ave., Belleville, IL 62221 or turned in to the SWIC Red Bud Campus Student Development Office, Room 175. Contestants will be recognized for their poetic excellence at an award ceremony Tuesday, April 21 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Room. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in each division. Winners will have an opportunity to share their poem during the ceremony. MEMBER UPDATES Smokers encouraged to make 2020 resolution to get screened for lung cancer, start cessation program Despite nationwide decreases in smoking over the decades, it still remains the country’s leading cause of preventable disease. For current smokers or those who have recently quit, an easy test can further detect lung cancer in its earlier stages, and it is available right here in the local community. Early detection saves lives. HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital encourage smokers to make a 2020 New Year’s resolution to schedule a quick and painless low-dose CT lung scan for the early diagnosis of lung cancer. Studies show that 75% of lung cancer patients are first diagnosed with advanced-stage disease, which greatly reduces their chance of survival. The goal of the screening program is to detect cancer at an early stage, even before someone has symptoms. At an early stage, surgery or other treatment options are possible and the cure rate can be much higher. The screening is a non-invasive low dose CT scan that can detect nodules or spots on your lung, which might be early indicators of lung cancer. The CT imaging technology uses an eighth of the radiation as that of a standard CT so there is very little risk in lung cancer screening. Anyone interested in being screened should talk to their physician about the screening criteria, potential benefits, limitations, and possible risks of having a lung cancer screening. If a person has one or more of the following risk factors, they are encouraged to talk to their physician about getting screened immediately: • Be age 55-74 years of age. • Have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer. • Have a history of smoking at least a pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years. • Be current smokers or have quit smoking within the last 15 years. Lung cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers worldwide, claiming more lives yearly than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. It is estimated that lung cancer accounts for nearly one in five cancer deaths globally. The most important factor in preventing lung cancer is to not smoke at all or for those who do smoke to start a smoking cessation program to help them quit immediately. This is important for the smoker and for those around them who can also be affected by secondhand smoke. About 85% of all lung cancers are found in smokers and the remainder is caused by secondhand smoke exposure. Lung cancer is, unfortunately, one of those diseases where symptoms may not present until the late stages, when treatment options are limited, and the survival rate is very low. MEMBER UPDATES Stroke Support Group topic focuses on community resources and how to access, February 5 To serve patients and the community, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital offers free stroke support groups for stroke survivors and their families and offer specialized education and topics at each session. The next Stroke Support Group meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 5 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., in the St. Francis Conference Room at the hospital, which is located adjacent to the hospital lobby, at 1 St. Elizabeth’s Blvd., O’Fallon, IL. The speaker for the upcoming session is Jodi Gardner, social worker from Programs and Services for Older Persons (PSOP), which is a community service offered by Southwestern Illinois College. She will be presenting on additional resources available to stroke patients and their families throughout the community and how to access them. The overall goal of St. Elizabeth’s Stroke Support Group is to foster a better understanding of stroke recovery, rehabilitation and prevention of recurrent strokes while providing a way for stroke survivors to meet others with similar challenges. Caregivers and family members of stroke patients are also offered an open atmosphere for sharing and for supporting each other. In addition, a closed Facebook Group titled “Stroke & Recovery Support Group at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s” is also available for those affected by stroke and their caregivers. Anyone interested in joining the Facebook group, is encouraged to log into your Facebook account and search “Stroke & Recovery Support Group at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s.” Then click on the group and request to join. MEMBER UPDATES Couple Gets the ‘Belleville Itch’ to Renovate Historic Hartmann Manor After spending time studying art in Chicago and New York, Paula Haniszewski and her husband Tom left New York City for something different, although they didn’t exactly have a plan in that moment. “I graduated right around the time of the financial crisis and housing crash, and there were no jobs anywhere,” said Haniszewski. “So, we really weren’t sure what to do with ourselves at that time and ended up traveling and kind-of living like a bunch of gypsies.” After traveling to Tom’s native Colorado, the couple made its way back to Illinois, and settled into Belleville, which is just minutes from Paula’s hometown, Freeburg., Ill. “We didn’t intend to stay here, but the truth of the matter is that we both immediately found jobs and affordable housing, which made it impossible to leave, and I couldn’t be happier about how life lined up for us in that time because we’re very happy here in Belleville,” said Haniszewski.

Since then, the couple purchased a starter home on N. Oak St. and stayed there for five years. But in 2017, the couple got that “Belleville itch” and bought the historic Hartmann Manor on S. Charles St., built circa 1885. “When we were ready to start looking for our next home, we looked in St. Louis, O’Fallon (Ill.), and Mascoutah, but they didn’t seem quite right,” said Haniszewski. “We weren’t ready for the ‘suburbs.’” Haniszewski mentioned that the idea of leaving Belleville was hard for them because they felt the city’s unique culture and note its walkability, art, history, and sense of community as aspects that drew them to stay in Belleville. Then, the former owners of Hartmann Manor invited the couple over for tea to discuss the possibility of them purchasing the home, and the rest, as they say, is history. With that, the couple moved into a small two-bedroom apartment in the manor and began renovating the space to turn it back into a single-family home. Most of the work was completed by Tom, who grew up working with his grandfather and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, building homes for those in need. “We were committed to loving this home again, to not throwing it away, but to restoring it to its original glory, and with Tom’s talents, we’ve been able to do that,” Haniszewski said. The couple also worked closely with neighbors, historic societies, and local artisans to help restore the home. For instance, as they were rebuilding the grand staircase, the couple called local business Turned Treasures to create historically appropriate staircase spindles. They also turned to neighbor Will Viall who showed them historical restoration techniques and tools. “Sometimes when I stop to think about the fact that we’ve restored a 5,000-square-foot historic mansion, it’s unbelievable,” said Haniszewski. “But it’s been through this process that we’ve become folded into the fabric of this community, and I wouldn’t change that for anything.” Haniszewski said that since she’s lived in Belleville, she’s seen the city transform. Ten years ago, when she moved back, the downtown looked quite different, but now, she notes that there are always pedestrians enjoying Main Street, that there are cars that fill up parking lots, and there is always something going on downtown Belleville or throughout the city. “Main Street does a great job of maintaining its history, but of also moving the city forward,” she said. Haniszewski said that she and her husband intend to stay in Belleville and raise their family here. In fact, their four-yearold daughter Scarlett has quite a busy schedule, making her rounds to visit her friends at her favorite downtown locations like Pour @ 322, the Old Town Farmer’s Market, and Bennie’s Pizza Pub, to name a few. “When she’s 35, I want her to come home and visit and her favorite places to still be there,” said Haniszewski. “This is the kind of community Belleville is, and we are proud to be part of it.” To learn more about the City of Belleville, visit www.belleville.net.
