MEMBER UPDATES HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Stresses Snow Safety Winter is here, and snow has already covered many regions of the United States. With the possible snow event expected for the region, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and Prairie Heart Institute want to ensure area residents stay as safe as possible when venturing outdoors. Slips and falls can cause serious harm as conditions of roads, parking lots and sidewalks worsen in winter weather. Additionally, snow shoveling is responsible for thousands of injuries and as many as 100 deaths each year nationwide, according to the National Safety Council. “Shoveling snow can be a strenuous activity, even for those who are physically fit,” says Dr. Regina Chiu, Prairie Heart Institute cardiologist. “At colder temperatures, heart rate and blood pressure can increase, as well as the risk of exhaustion, dehydration, back injuries and even heart attacks.” Here are some tips to be mindful of over the next few months to avoid slips and falls: • Beware of wet, dark areas on the pavement. There may be thin, hardly visible layers of ice (black ice) on these spots as a result of dew or water vapor freezing. It is best to treat all of these areas as slippery in cold temperatures. • Walk slowly and take short strides. Use handrails when walking up or down steps. Choose well-walked paths and avoid taking shortcuts, since these areas may not be accessible for snow or ice removal. • Keep your hands free and extend your arms while walking. Avoid carrying too much or placing your hands in your pockets. This will keep your center of gravity from decreasing and help to maintain balance. Keeping your driveway and walkway clear of snow and ice is, in most cases, a necessity and will help prevent falls this winter. But it is important to not overexert yourself which can lead to serious health issues. Follow these snow-shoveling tips to help keep you safe this winter. • Know if you shouldn’t shovel. Certain people should avoid shoveling snow. If you have a history of heart problems, you should discuss with your doctor. • Dress appropriately. Wear light clothing in layers to provide both ventilation and insulation. To keep warm, wear a hat, gloves and thick socks. Avoid falls by wearing shoes or boots with slip-resistant soles. • Warm up first. Before you begin shoveling the snow, warm up your muscles for approximately 10 minutes by doing stretches or other light exercises. • Use proper equipment. Use a shovel that is comfortable for your height and strength. Do not use a shovel that is too heavy or too long for you. Space your hands on the tool grip to increase your leverage. • Lift snow correctly. Try to push the snow instead of lifting it. If you must lift, do it properly. Squat with your legs apart, knees bent and back straight. Lift with your legs. Avoid bending at the waist. Scoop small amounts of snow into the shovel and walk to where you want to dump it. Holding a shovelful of snow with your arms outstretched puts too much weight on your spine. Never remove deep snow all at once. Do it in pieces. • Avoid overexerting yourself. Be very careful not to overexert yourself as you work. Pace yourself and take breaks often. It’s a good idea to go indoors to warm up. Taking five to 10 minutes to relax gives your body time to rest. Pay attention to the signals your body is sending. If you feel pain or pressure in your chest, call your doctor right away. • Choose chemical products carefully. Putting a layer of rock salt (sodium chloride) on icy areas is an effective way to melt the ice. However, rock salt can cause damage to concrete and metal surfaces and is also harmful to plants. Magnesium chloride is less corrosive than other chemical products and works well for melting ice. Before using any icemelting products read the labels carefully. “In addition, it is always best to check with your doctor to make sure that it is all right for you to shovel snow. If you have a medical condition or are not used to strenuous exercise, it may be safer to have someone else clear the snow,” said Dr. Chiu. “If you are shoveling snow or using a snow blower and experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or other sudden or severe symptoms, stop immediately and call 9-1-1.” For more information about snow shoveling safety, please visit https://www.nsc.org/community-safety/safety-topics/ seasonal-safety/winter-safety/snow-shoveling.

MEMBER UPDATES Louer Facility Planning Announces Leadership Transition Louer Facility Planning, Inc. is announcing a leadership transition plan, along with celebrating 25 years in business. Founding President and CEO, Jane Louer, has put the wheels in motion for a gradual buyout and leadership transition to two of the company’s key employees, Yvette Paris and April Grapperhaus. The initial phase of the employee purchase has been completed and the company is pleased to welcome the new owner/partners. Louer remains majority stockholder but her ownership will be reduced each year for the next three years, when Paris will become majority stockholder. Paris, NCIDQ, LEED® AP, the firm’s long-time Design Director, is assuming the role of Vice President/Design Director and shareholder. Paris has been with the the company for 15 years. Grapperhaus, former Office Manager for seven years, now holds the title of Director of Operations and is also a shareholder in the firm. Louer said the company began in 1996 when the she was motivated to start her own company where she could be in full control of its direction and mission. She saw a definable need in the commercial interiors industry for the integration of interior design, furniture and construction to deliver a seamless project delivery method for for creating and fulfilling interior space needs and workplace efficiency. At the time that Louer started her career, there were few women working in the architecture, engineering and construction industry. After spending a few years working for design/build contractors in St. Louis, Louer was hired in 1980 by The Korte Company to launch the firm’s interior design and furniture group. In 1984, she became the company’s first female vice president. Louer’s passion for designing, furnishing and construction of the entire interior space for commercial clients in the corporate, financial, government and healthcare industry was evident. A decade after Louer incorporated in 1996, she recruited Paris. “Yvette has truly shaped the company,” said Louer. “She is responsible for new hires, training and directing the path of Louer Facility Planning. Yvette’s creative talents, her dedication to detail and her level of unrelenting customer service has enabled us to retain wonderful clients over the past decade and a half.” Paris says she has learned a great deal from Louer and is grateful to have had her as mentor. “In order for people to grow, they have to be able to grow through and up to the task at hand,” Paris said. “I’m thankful to have had this opportunity to learn an incredible amount from Jane since 2006. And I’m excited for this new chapter and all the future holds.” Seven years after hiring Paris, Louer brought Grapperhaus on board. “April is adept at following each project diligently and multitasking with ease,” said Louer. “As our firm has grown and there are more and more parts and pieces to projects and to the operation of the firm overall, April works proactively and makes sure every vendor and client is attended to so projects remain on schedule.” Like Paris, Grapperhaus has witnessed Louer’s dedication and ability to continually grow Louer Facility Planning through good times and economic downturns. “I’ve had the chance to shadow Jane and learn everything from clerical to accounting, order entry, project management, client support, vendor relations and more,” Grapperhaus said. “Working for a small company has afforded all of us the opportunity to tap into Jane’s career-long industry experience and wisdom. It’s the reason we’re where we are today.” Currently Louer Facility Planning ranks in the top dozen office furniture firms within the St. Louis Region, as determined by annual sales revenues. Louer is thankful for the company’s longstanding clients including Anderson Hospital, SIUE and Washington University in St. Louis. “Having had the unique opportunity to start and build my own firm has been incredibly satisfying,” Louer said. “As we celebrate 25 years in business, we’re all celebrating a quarter of a century as the region’s go-to workplace design resource. We’re celebrating 25 years of creating ideal office landscapes that allow companies to grow and prosper.” For more information about Louer Facility Planning, see https://louerplan.com/.

MEMBER UPDATES HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Outpatient Therapy now offering “dry needling” therapy to help alleviate pain and tension HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Outpatient Therapy is dedicated to bringing a variety of advanced therapies to assist patients struggling with pain and tension issues. A recently added therapy is Intramuscular Dry Needling. Intramuscular dry needling is a highly effective, targeted treatment that uses thin filiform needles inserted into muscular trigger points to help relieve pain and improve range of motion. The procedure allows the therapist to reach tissues otherwise not within reach during other methods of physical therapy. As the name implies, “Dry Needling” does not include injecting any type of medication or solution into the body. Dry Needling can be used to treat injuries to muscles, tendons, joints and other conditions including, but not limited to: · Tension Headaches · Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction · Thoracic Outlet Syndrome · Rotator Cuff or Impingement Syndrome · Low Back Pain · Chronic Pain · Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) · Carpal Tunnel Syndrome · Hamstring/Groin Pain · Knee Pain/Tendonitis · Achilles Tendonitis · Plantar Heel Pain Certified Dry Needling Practitioner Jennifer Thompson, PT, DPT, COMPT provides Dry Needling therapy services at St. Elizabeth’s Outpatient Therapy location at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex in O’Fallon. Thompson said, “Dry Needling is often compared to acupuncture because they use the same tool, but the two are not the same. Acupuncture is based on preserving ancient theories, principles, and tenets of traditional Chinese medicine. Dry Needling is based on western neuroanatomy and modern scientific study of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.” She added, “The only similarity is that they both use the same type of needle.” The common question about dry needling is “does it hurt?” Thompson said, “When the needle enters the skin, it is usually unnoticed but when the target trigger point is stimulated, some minor discomfort is common during therapy and possibly the next day. But, immediate improvement in range-of-motion and strength, as well as a decrease in their original pain is also felt by patients.” For questions or more information about how you may benefit from Dry Needling therapy, call 618-624-3668 to learn more or schedule an appointment.
