HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is pleased to announce that Alison Kennedy, BSN, RN and Stroke Program Coordinator, has recently been appointed to serve as a member of the Illinois Stroke Advisory Subcommittee by The Illinois Department of Public Health for a term of three years. As a member of this body, Kennedy will represent Southwest Illinois EMS Region 4, which includes Bond, Clinton, Fayette, Greene, Macoupin, Madison, Monroe, Randolph, St. Clair, and Washington counties, and the State of Illinois in an advisory capacity regarding matters related to the triage, treatment, and transport of possible acute stroke patients. “I am both privileged and honored to accept this advisory position on behalf of our region and the State of Illinois,” said Kennedy. PHARMACY INFORMATICS RESIDENCY PROGRAM AT HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S EARNS PRELIMINARY ACCREDITATION
Recently, the HSHS Postgraduate Year Two (PGY-2) Pharmacy Informatics Residency Program was granted immediate preliminary accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The announcement came after an onsite visit by ASHP surveyors on October 27-28, 2015. Based at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, Illinois, the PGY-2 Pharmacy Informatics Residency Program was established in July 1, 2014 with initial financial support through HSHS’ Renaissance Quality Insurance, Ltd grant and has subsequently been integrated into Information and Technology Services’ (ITS) Medical Informatics Product Line in collaboration with St. Elizabeth’s PGY-1 program. St. Elizabeth’s Hospital was originally selected for the site of this program due to the colleague readiness, progressive technology available and the size of the hospital, which allows residents to not only implement new solutions, but also follow and measure the success of our interventions. In addition, the robust existing PGY-1 (post-graduate year one) pharmacy residency program provides a baseline structure with a strong platform for academic innovation to drive and demand innovative pharmacy solutions. The 12-month program is designed to immerse Pharmacy Residents in the world of pharmacy informatics and health information technology by working closely with seasoned Pharmacy Informaticists as well as local Pharmacy departments. During their time in the program, residents focus on central knowledge points like clinical informatics, medication safety, evidence-based medicine, health system informatics and administration, supply chain, and pharmacy automation.
HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL EARNED AN ‘A’ FOR PATIENT SAFETY IN LEAPFROG’S SAFETY SCORE
The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent nonprofit. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Hospital Safety Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.
“HSHS St. Elizabeth’s has diligently worked to improve patient safety over the past several years to truly deliver region leading, safe, high-quality care,” said Shelley Harris, DNP and Interim Chief Executive Officer at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “We are proud of this distinction and are pleased to see our hard work and dedication has allowed us to achieve this breakthrough A performance rating.” St. Elizabeth’s was able to increase hospital safety by utilizing a Daily Performance Management (DPM) system. Guided by this system, St. Elizabeth’s quality department partners in real time with front line clinicians to identify potential risk for patient harm and empowers front line clinicians to identify and remove potential harm before reaching patients. rause, Pri ncipal, M etro East Lutheran TheBANK High Scho of Edward ol; and Lin sville’s Co ette Warn mmercial ecke, Vice Banking G President, roup.
Dr. Jay Krause:
About TheBANK of Edwardsville’s Commercial Banking Group There’s a long, successful history between TheBANK of Edwardsville and Metro East Lutheran High School, and I know for many like myself, it’s both a professional and personal relationship. I’ve met so many very good people – people like Linette Warnecke – who have worked hard to benefit my school and me. What I’m always impressed with is the level of personalized service I
receive … every time. I’m treated like a person and not just a representative of a big organization. It’s a refreshing way of doing business for myself, my school and our ministry. TheBANK is not only our banking partner, but an institution that is very well connected in the community. Those connections, along with their knowledge of our overall operations and the operations of our 12 supporting churches in the Metro East area, has been very important to us. TheBANK backs up its commitment to the community by what they do with our high school and our partners.
The bottom line is that I have no reservations about recommending TheBANK of Edwardsville – for both professional and personal banking needs – to anyone I meet.

A total of 10 dedicated nurses were also recognized for receiving additional individual nominations for this quarter. These colleagues include: Nicole Culley and Joseph Ford (Med/Surg), Jamie Burkett (Progressive Care Unit), Sharon Haege (Infusion Services), and Lori Beckemeyer, Bobbi Hanus, April Jones, Michael Kaiser, Katy Lorenzo and Brian Michalowski (Critical Care Unit). MAYOR DESIGNATES NATIONAL HOME CARE AND HOSPICE MONTH
Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert recently signed proclamations designating November 2015 as National Home Care and Hospice Month. During the month of November, the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) celebrates National Home Care Month, National Hospice Month and Home Care Aide Week. During this month, HSHS Home Care Southern Illinois and HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois are celebrating the home care and hospice community, and honoring the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapist and social workers who make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve. These heroic caregivers play a central role in the health care system and in homes across the nation. The proclamations signed by Mayor Eckert state that home care provides high quality, compassionate and skilled health care services to those in need, especially at times of community or personal health care crisis; and hospice and palliative care empower people to live as fully as possible, surrounded and supported by family and loved ones, despite serious and life-limiting illness. As such, the Mayor proclaims November as National Home Care and Hospice Month, and encourages the support and participation of all citizens in learning more about home care concepts of care for the elderly, disabled, and infirm, as well as increase their understanding and awareness of care at the end of life.

Chamber Member Update HSHS HOSPICE SOUTHERN ILLINOIS ACCEPTING PATIENTS FROM ADDITIONAL SOUTHERN IL COUNTIES
HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois is now accepting patients into its Hospice program in St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Randolph and Washington counties. HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois’ has an office located at 340 West Lincoln, Suite 580, on the campus of HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois is a health care service focused on caring for the whole person and that person’s family, as they face their most vulnerable time: the end of a life. Hospice uses an interdisciplinary approach to caring for terminally ill individuals that stresses palliative (comfort) care as opposed to curative care. Hospice care may take place wherever a person lives, including in their homes, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes. Shawna O’Dell, HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois Director, explained, “Our Hospice core services include physician care and evaluation; nursing services that are available on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week; medical social services by a qualified social worker; and counseling with respect to care of the terminally ill individual and adjustment to death.” For questions or more information about HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois program, call HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois at (800) 551-6566.
SANDBERG PHOENIX RANKS AMONG TOP ST. LOUIS FIRMS IN U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT
In its annual “Best Law Firms” list, U.S. News & World Report has continued to rate Sandberg Phoenix & von Gontard P.C. among the top law firms in the St. Louis Metropolitan area in several legal areas. The ranking is the result of a rigorous evaluation process that includes the collection of client and attorney evaluations, peer review from industry leaders, and review of additional information provided by law firms as part of the formal submission process. Sandberg Phoenix has been ranked in the areas of Closely Held Companies and Family Business Law, Mass Tort Litigation / Class Actions – Defendants, Corporate Law, Mergers & Acquisitions Law and Real Estate for the first time in 2015, reflecting the growing number of skills offered by the full service firm. Although the rankings provide a reliable measure of the expertise of the firm’s attorneys, the increased success is only a recognition of Sandberg Phoenix’s focus on achieving clients’ goals and providing guaranteed service satisfaction.
