Tom Bell Receives Commitment to Community Award Tom Bell was presented the Ambassador Club’s Commitment to Community Award on June 5 for his long-term contribution to the Belleville area. The award is presented quarterly to Chamber members who demonstrate a commitment to improving the quality of life for residents and/or businesses in the greater Belleville area.
Born and raised in Belleville, Bell spent more than 40 years of his life running and owning Belleville Electrical Supplies on Lebanon Ave. In 2000, he sold the business to Cape Electrical Supply and continued to work there until 2006 when he accepted an offer from his best customer, Mr. Larry Glaenzer. At Glaenzer Electric, Bell serves as a project manager in charge of the residential homes GEI wires. In addition to organizing residential projects, he also helps many friends and community leaders with specialized commercial and community electrical jobs. In 1995, Bell was called by Gene Hausman of WHGK Architects to take over the maintenance and time clocks for the decorative post lights on East and West Main Streets and eventually, took on the Historic District and Hexenbokle neighborhoods. Currently, he is responsible

for keeping all decorative post lights burning throughout the City of Belleville. Bell is a founding member of the Belleville Main Street Board of Directors and served as president for several years. In addition to his involvement with Belleville Main Street, Bell has been chairman of the St. Clair County Electrical Commission and has worked closely with the City of Belleville in planning and building the power panels used for all street festivals. Bell truly loves the City of Belleville and has tried to give back to Belleville out of gratitude for all it has done for him throughout his life. Congratulations to the well deserving recipient, Tom Bell.
Rain Doesn’t Stop the Second Annual Brew & Que
Despite the midwest showers, Belleville Main Street held a successful Second Annual Brew & Que on Saturday, June 7. The all day event featured BBQ from twelve vendors and eighteen craft beers in the craft beer walk. Patrons dance in the rain and splash in the puddles during a brief shower that showed up during the event.
The food vendors and entertainment filled two blocks of East Main Street from Jackson to Charles, while the craft beers were dispersed throughout merchants along Main Street generating foot traffic up and down Main Street. Some of the favorite food items included Shooters’ Pulled Pork Nachos and Jambalaya Wings, Mr. BBQ’s footlong Polish Sausage and carnival goodies by Premier Works. The People’s Choice Award went to BBQ Boys. Accompanying the event was music entertainment from DJ Benny, Sully, Old Salt Union and Scandaleros. DJ Benny kept things rocking during the brief rain showers during the event. Thank you goes out to the volunteers and Big Daddy’s 618, Chick Fritz The Chamber Connection Distributing and Crown Valley Brewing for sponsoring the event.

Become a Community Leader
The kick-off for the 2014-2015 Leadership Belleville Class is right around the corner. Leadership Belleville is a great program for professionals of any age to learn more about how they can be a leader in their community. The nine month program is adaptable to each individual and their current professional career situation. The goals of the program are to: Develop effective community leaders Establish valuable relationships with business and civic leaders Expand awareness and understanding of important issues affecting business and the community Foster a commitment to personal, professional and community growth Provide opportunities for on-going business development, growth & expansion within the Belleville area Classes are composed of up to 25 professionals who demonstrate the highest leadership qualities. These classmates create a valuable network of resources – paying dividends to both alumni and their business sponsors. Classmates grow together during the program as they learn more during the monthly day dedicated to a specific issue or subject pertaining to the Belleville area, such as history, arts, religion, government, business and industry, education, healthcare, community and aging, economic development, law enforcement and justice. Participants are given the chance to meet and engage a large number of business, community and political leaders during each session. Applications for the 2014-2015 class are due by July 15, 2014. Local civil engineering and land surveying firm Thouvenot, Wade & Moerchen, Inc. (TWM) recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Johnathon Abbott, of Mascoutah. A 2014 graduate of Mascoutah High School, Johnathon will study engineering and math at the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign in the fall. Hoernis Auto Body in Belleville today announced its achievement of Gold Class status, the industry standard for training that contributes to complete and safe repairs. Only 10 percent of collision repair businesses currently meet the rigorous training requirements necessary to earn the Gold Class designation. Gold Class shops are required to have every technician involved in collision repair take training that is specific to their roles. They must continue with ongoing training each year for the business to maintain its Gold Class recognition, including classes in new technology. Chamber Member Update STEVE HOERNIS OF HOERNIS AUTO BODY COMPLETES PRESTIGIOUS AUTOMOTIVE MANAGER DESIGNATION
Continually looking for ways to advance the professional standard of its employees, Hoernis Auto Body of Belleville recently announced that Steve Hoernis completed the prestigious program for receiving the designation as Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM). This designation is bestowed upon professionals in the automotive industry who complete the program and exemplify professionalism of the automotive service industry. The AAM designation is offered through the Automotive Management Institute (AMI). The continuing education provided by AMI helps automotive service and collision repair professionals improve their business management skills. Hoernis will graduate as one of fewer than 100 other automotive professionals in the State of Illinois to complete the program since it’s inception 20 years ago. The AAM designation has become a cornerstone in professionalizing automotive service management.

Hoernis began his career in the auto body industry in 1993 as part owner of Hoernis Auto Body. His primary role at Hoernis is customer service and management. St. Elizabeth’s has therapists that specialize in integrating this technology into a comprehensive rehabilitation program for a variety of therapy needs including muscle strengthening after a total joint replacement, following lower extremity injury, for neurological diagnosis, weight loss and conditioning in a fall-safe environment.

Local engineering and surveying firm Thouvenot, Wade & Moerchen, Inc. (TWM) has hired Scott Simmons of Maryville, IL, as a Water / Wastewater Engineer in the firm’s St. Louis office. Mr. Simmons has 10 years of experience in the design of water, wastewater and stormwater facilities in the St. Louis area. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TWM provides land surveying, civil and structural engineering design, construction observation and planning services to both private and public sector clients. With a total of five locations all in the Metro St. Louis area, the firm was named the 12th Largest Engineering Firm in the St. Louis Metropolitan area, and has been recognized as the largest engineering firm Southwestern Illinois. AGC ST. LOUIS AWARDS IMPACT STRATEGIES “ZERO RECORDABLE ACCIDENTS SAFETY AWARD”
The Associated General Contractors of St. Louis (AGC St. Louis) recently awarded Fairview Heights construction-management firm IMPACT Strategies with the “Zero Recordable Accidents Safety Award” for having no recordable injuries, illnesses or fatalities for all of the company’s employees who work within the AGC St. Louis charter area. The award recognized work completed in calendar year 2013. “This award reaffirms our unwavering commitment to safety as our number one priority on all of our job sites,” said IMPACT’s president Mark Hinrichs. “Our main concern has and always will be safety for all of our workers and, at the end of the day, our goal is to get everyone home safely to their families.” Last year IMPACT Strategies also achieved its tenth straight year of accident-free work sites, a highly notable achievement within the construction industry. ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL NAMED ONE OF 21 EMERGENT STROKE READY HOSPITALS IN ILLINOIS
St. Elizabeth’s Hospital was recently designated as an Emergent Stroke Ready Hospital by the Illinois Department of Public Health. St. Elizabeth’s achieved this special designation by implementing emergency stroke care policies and procedures to align with nationally recognized evidence based standards and criteria, like those from the American Heart/Stroke Association and Brain Attack Coalition. “We are pleased to receive the Emergent Stroke Ready designation as St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is the only Emergent Stroke Ready Hospital in the Metro East and is one of only 21 hospitals in the Illinois to achieve this designation,” said Dr. Shelly Harkins, Chief Medical Officer for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “Receiving this high-level designation once again reaffirms our commitment to offering region leading, high-quality stroke care for all residents of the Metro East.” St. Elizabeth’s chose to apply for the Emergent Stroke Ready Designation after implementing its Stroke Telemedicine Program, in partnership with C30 Stroke Telemedicine Services, in December 2013. The telemedicine services offer real-time access to world class neurologists using an audio and video connection through a telemedicine robot. “In the event of a stroke, ‘time is brain’ as patients need to receive possible life-saving treatment as soon as possible,” noted Alison Kennedy, BSN, RN and Stroke Coordinator at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “With our new Emergent Stroke Ready designation and partnership with C3O Stroke Telemedicine, EMS providers can confidently bring stroke patients to St. Elizabeth’s, where they will receive appropriate treatments immediately to ensure the best possible outcomes. Seeking treatment at a prepared facility can make a great difference in patient outcomes and quality of life. This may even make the difference between life and death.” Kennedy encourages all community members to learn how to spot a stroke and “ACT F.A.S.T.” as every hour into a stroke, the brain is aged 3.6 years and someone dies as a result of a stroke every 3-4 minutes. Kennedy also stressed the importance of understanding that a stroke can occur at any age. While stroke is often thought of as an older person’s health issue, research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), confirms that the rate of strokes among children and young adults is sharply rising. In fact, the stroke hospitalization rate from 1995 to 2008 was 30% to 37% higher among those aged 15-44, according to the study. Signs and symptoms of stroke Include: • sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body • sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding • sudden difficulty seeing in one or both eyes, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, sudden severe headache with no known cause Follow this F.A.S.T. acronym if someone is exhibiting any of the above symptoms: FACE – Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? ARMS – Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? S– Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange? HOLLAND CONSTRUCTION SERVICES COMPLETES GOLDEN CORRAL IN ALTON
Holland Construction Services (Holland) recently completed construction on the new Golden Corral Buffet & Grill in Alton, Illinois. The restaurant, which celebrated its grand opening last month, is located at 350 Homer Adams Parkway on the site of the former Dave Mungenast Alton Toyota. Mungenast Toyota had vacated the property several years ago when it relocated to its current site and building just to the north. Work on Golden Corral involved demolition of the former car dealership building and construction of the new 7,368 square foot restaurant. The interior features a new open design allowing guests easier access to the food stations. The exterior offers customers 40 additional parking spaces than what was available at the restaurant’s previous location on Corner Court in Alton. The property is owned by Mungenast and is leased to Kennedy Crause Inc., the owners of Golden Corral’s in Alton, Carbondale, Collinsville, and Osage Beach, Missouri. Holland Construction Services is a full-service general contracting, construction management, and design/build firm based in Swansea, Ill., guided by the principle of delivering total customer satisfaction on every project. The company has been providing quality construction services throughout Illinois and Missouri since 1986, when it was founded by Bruce Holland.
THE PAIN CENTER AT MEMORIAL WELCOMES DRS. YANG AND RANDLE
The Pain Center at Memorial and pleased to welcome two new physicians to the medical staff, Dr. Kui Yang and Dr. Gregory Randle. Both physicians will work at The Pain Center to provide pain management options for patients and to coordinate treatment plans with fellow physicians. Dr. Yang earned his medical degree from Dalian Medical University in China. He practiced orthopedic medicine in China before moving to the United States where he completed a residency in general surgery in California, a year of general surgery residency at St. Louis University and an anesthesiology residency and pain management fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Dr. Yang has broad clinical interests including chronic/complex pain syndromes utilizing interventional modalities and multidisciplinary pain management. Dr. Randle received a medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and completed a residency in anesthesiology at Barnes Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Randle will offer specialized pain management treatments when standard therapies have been exhausted. The vendor fee is $50. Each vendor is provided a table and two chairs. Checks may be made payable to the “Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce” and mailed to the Chamber office at 216 East A Street, Belleville, IL 62220.
