Big help for small business.

Harmony Emge District 175

Harmony Emge District 175 is comprised of Ellis Elementary School and Emge Junior High School, located on the westend of Belleville. The two public schools strive to provide an environment for both personal and academic development. Combined, the school serve more than 900 students ranging from grades Pre-K - 8.

At Commerce Bank, our approach is to make your day more efficient. That’s why we maintain a wide array of accounts and services designed to help you do business the way you want to do business. It’s our job to help you choose the right banking solutions for your unique needs.

ELLIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

has been proud to offer the highest quality education to their students, grades Pre-K - 4, since their doors first opened in 1962. A testament to the high quality of education can be seen through being awarded Spotlight School Award, Academic Improvement Award, and an NCLB Blue Ribbon School Award within the past five years.

Ellis believes in “engaged learning” and incorporates student-centered activities that meet the various learning styles and needs of the individual student. Ellis strives for a well-rounded educational program that includes: a challenging core curriculum; a strong Response to Intervention program; a differentiated instruction approach to meet the needs of all learners – including gifted learners; and a unique Character Education program that focuses on positive interventions and the building of positive relationships. Within the Character Ed plan, one of the most successful components has been the Ellis Families. With Ellis Families, a staff member is in charge of about 15 students divided between grades K-4 (all students participate). By doing this, students not only build positive relationships with an adult outside of their teacher, but also form relationships with students in other grades. The families meet once a month and do fun activities together focusing on building positive relationships and teamwork. The program is so successful that this past year, the Belleville News-Democrat wrote about the Ellis Families, which was then picked up by the Associated Press and printed in papers from California to Florida. Ellis is very proud of thier character program and encourages anyone who wants to know more to check out the full list of interventions within our RtI Plan (available at www. harmony175.org). Looking ahead, one of the biggest challenges Ellis faces is the continual adaptation to the Common Core Standards and transition to the upcoming PARCC assessment set to take place in the 2014 -15 school year. However, Ellis has been planning and preparing for this transition for the past three years. Principal Deets is confident Ellis will continue to provide the best education possible due to the incredible teachers, support staff, parent, and community support at Ellis Elementary School.

Emge also offers a variety of activities such as Student Council, Chess, Scholar Bowl, Art Club, Musical and Odyssey of the Mind. Emge’s teachers have a broad range of training, academic preparation and post-graduate study keep Emge students learning and challenged throughout the school day. In addition to academic preparation, the staff has placed an emphasis on students having an active role in the entire process of volunteering and service learning. Emge Junior High School has focused on introducing the students to service learning throughout the 2013-2014 school year. The Character Education Program has implemented projects that emphasis social / emotional learning and content specific classes have integrated service learning through writing lessons. Students assist in contacting agencies, writing persuasive letters requesting donations, writing letters of support, organizing products, organizing gift baskets, collecting recyclables, and delivering items. The highlighted programs include work with the following organizations: Belleville Area Human Society, St. Clair County Recycling Program, Belleville Veteran’s Program, and collaboration with Scott Air Force Base. Exposure to all aspects of volunteering and service learning has opened Emge students’ eyes to their role in our community. Students have reported, “I had no idea I could make such a huge difference on my own.” Understanding change can occur with one act of kindness has been the driving force to expand their service learning programs. It is Emge’s goal that students truly understand that our community will be as strong as they make it.

The building administration knows professional development is vital for the building to move forward. The teachers have been planning and preparing for the Common Core Standards through various trainings offered at the ROE. Emge piloted the PARCC field test this past year and the testing was successfully run in the building.

Chamber Member Update ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL RECEIVES NUCLEAR CARDIOLOGY ACCREDITATION

St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Outpatient Cardiovascular Testing Department has recently been granted a three-year term of accreditation in Nuclear Cardiology by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). This is the seventh year St. Elizabeth’s has held this accreditation, as St. Elizabeth’s first received this accreditation in 2007. Nuclear Cardiology is often used for early detection of life threatening heart disorders and other diseases. Accreditation by the IAC means that St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Outpatient Nuclear Cardiology Lab has undergone a thorough review of its operational and technical components by a panel of experts and is providing quality patient care, in compliance with national standards. The detailed review included all areas that contribute to an accurate diagnosis based on Nuclear Cardiology Testing including: the skill of the technologists performing examinations, the type of equipment used, the background knowledge of the interpreting physician and other quality assurance measures. “As a region leader in cardiac care, we are excited to receive this additional three-year Nuclear Cardiology Accreditation”, said Bonnie Schneider, MS RT, and Director of Cardiovascular Services at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “St. Elizabeth’s IAC ‘seal of approval’ for Nuclear Cardiology procedures ensures that our patients can rely on us to receive region leading, high-quality diagnostic cardiac care.”

On May 6, Penn Station East Coast Subs celebrated their opening with a ribbon cutting. Located on the east side of Belleville, Penn Station will offer their menu Monday - Saturday: 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday: 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Their menu inclues a variety of sandwiches, fresh-cut fries, cheesebread and more. Penn Station can also help you with your catering and box lunch needs.

IAC accreditation is widely respected within the medical community as illustrated by the support of national medical societies related to Nuclear Cardiology, which include physicians, technologists and medical physicists. Nuclear accreditation is required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and in some cases by private insurers. The IAC encourages patients to inquire about accreditation status before scheduling Nuclear Cardiology examinations at any facility. To learn more about Nuclear Cardiology Accreditations visit, www.intersocietal.org/nuclear/main/patients.htm.

Emily May, DPT of the Frontenac, MO clinic for ApexNetwork recently had the pleasure of attending the continuing education course on Lumbar & Sacroiliac Dysfunction: Diagnosis & Management with HVLA Thrust Manipulation & Exercise held in Atlanta, GA. This course included extensive information on instructions and techniques of manipulation and also included lectures on recent evidence based care for physical therapy practices. The research indicated that manipulation in conjunction with physical therapy exercises and modalities can be more beneficial than just physical therapy alone for long term results of decreased disability.

SWIC STUDENTS ELECT NEW STUDENT TRUSTEE FOR 2014-15

APEXNETWORK CLINIC MANAGER IN SMITHTON, IL TRAVELS TO NICARAGUA TO PROVIDE MEDICAL SERVICES TO PEOPLE IN NEED

Southwestern Illinois College students have chosen a new student body representative to the college’s Board of Trustees.

Natalie Heberlie, Physical Therapist at ApexNetwork Physical Therapy in Smithton, IL traveled to Nicaragua February 8-16 with Global Health Outreach to provide medical services to people in need. She was part of a team of American and Nicaraguan dentists, doctors, nurses, and Christian pastors. They traveled 8 hours from the capital city of Managua to a very remote area of Nicaragua and set up clinic in a small 5 room school. They were able to provide medical care to almost 1,400 patients. It was common for patients to walk four to six hours to receive care with some families walking 10-14 hours for medical care. These individuals may have to wait years for another chance to receive medical care.

Nick Raftopoulos of Granite City was recently elected the student trustee for the 2014-2015 academic year. He was sworn in April 16 during the SWIC Board of Trustees meeting. “I am interested in helping others and learning more about the process of decision making at the college,” he said. “I am excited to represent my fellow students.” Raftopoulos is a full-time Sam Wolf Granite City Campus student pursuing an Associate in Arts degree. In addition to his new role, he is the president of the College Democrats and a member of the Alpha Kappa Rho chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society of the twoyear college.

Pictured, from left, at his April 16 swearingin are SWIC President Georgia Costello, Ph.D.; Nick’s mother, Associate Professor He is the son of Alex and Beth Raftopoulos, RN, who is an Associate Professor of Nursing of Nursing Education Beth Raftopoulos, Education at SWIC. As student trustee, Raftopoulos will be responsible for casting “advisory” RN; Nick Raftopoulos; Board Secretary Beverly Fiss; and Board Chair Nick J. votes on action items at the Board of Trustees meetings each month. BELLEVILLE NAMED A MOST PROGRESSIVE CITY BY AMEREN ILLINOIS’ ACTONENERGY® PROGRAM GOING GREEN WHILE SAVING GREEN

Ameren Illinois today presented the ActOnEnergy® Most Progressive City Award to the city of Belleville. Recognition is inspired by the significant energy savings made by Belleville businesses. Between June 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013, 74 Belleville businesses completed 143 ActOnEnergy projects and received more than $69,700 in incentive payments. As a result, Belleville businesses are saving 1.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and 68 therms of natural gas every year. That is the equivalent to removing more than 1.9 million pounds of CO2 from the atmosphere or removing approximately 172 cars from the road.

IMPACT Strategies has worked with this client on other projects over the years. In 2011, IMPACT renovated the Jack Schmitt Chevrolet dealership in O’Fallon, Ill., and in 2004 it constructed the Jack’s Premium Car Wash and Quick Lube in O’Fallon, lll. Tom Gerke, Executive Manager of the Chevrolet dealership, commented, “Once again we are excited to partner with IMPACT Strategies on our new building in Wood River, Illinois. The new Chevrolet store will be the most technologically advanced and energy efficient dealership facility in the St. Louis/Metro East area. IMPACT Strategies’ team has worked hard to make sure we have maximized our space efficiencies along with minimizing building cost. We simply can’t wait to occupy the new dealership.”

“The efforts of Belleville businesses and residents to be more energy conscious are having a real impact by reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions, conserving resources and improving the economic competitiveness of area businesses, all of which benefit employees, consumers and the community at large,” said George Justice, director of Ameren Illinois Division VI, who presented the award to Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert. In recognition of their award, the city will receive a road sign that can be displayed in the community. ActOnEnergy provides Ameren Illinois business customers-including private schools and nonprofits-with cash incentives to implement energy efficiency projects. These incentives are intended to make it more affordable for business customers in all industries to perform meaningful measures that will help reduce their energy consumption, including replacement or upgrades to lighting, heating and cooling systems, steam traps, motor systems and specialty equipment. The program is funded through a small charge (Rider EDR for electricity customers and a Rider GER for natural gas customers) on customer bills. These charges are mandated by state law.

“Ameren Illinois business customers can realize significant savings when they participate in the ActOnEnergy programs,” said Keith Martin, Director of Energy Efficiency. “For example, replacing a standard T-12 fluorescent light fixture with a high-efficiency T-8 fluorescent fixture can reduce electricity consumption by 33 percent.” “Our dedicated team of energy efficiency professionals is available to help customers take advantage of the savings available through the ActOnEnergy® programs, so they can spend less on energy and focus on what really matters.” Complete business program information is available at ActOnEnergy.com, by calling 1-866-800-0747 or by sending an e-mail to ActOnEnergyBusiness@ameren.com. Ameren Illinois also offers incentives and rebates to residential customers. Ameren Illinois delivers energy to 1.2 million electric and 767,000 natural gas customers in downstate Illinois. Our mission is to power the quality of life. Chamber Member Update MEMORIAL EMPLOYEES HONORED; BRIAN RIPPERDA NAMED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

SCOTT CREDIT UNION, AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY RAISE $86,000 AT MARDI GRAS BALL FUND RAISER

More than 400 Memorial Hospital, Memorial Care Center, Memorial Medical Group and Belleville Health and Sports Center employees were honored at this year’s Employee Recognition Dinner held May 9 at Fischer’s Restaurant in Belleville, Illinois. Brian Ripperda of Belleville was named Employee of the Year out of 12 candidates recognized as Employee of the Month throughout the year. He has worked at Memorial for three and a half years and is a nurse on 2 South.

Scott Credit Union teamed up with the American Cancer Society recently to raise $86,000 to fight cancer and create a world with more birthdays. Scott Credit Union was the host and presenting sponsor for the recent Mardi Gras Ball fund raiser and also has signed on to continue as the regional sponsor of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life and Making Strides events.

Representatives from Scott Credit Union presented a $96,000 check recently to the American Cancer Society. The money was the $10,000 Relay and Strides sponsorships and the $86,000 from the Mardi Gras Ball Event. The Mardi Gras Ball event was held at Lewis and Clark in Godfrey and featured an elegant dinner, live and silent auctions, and entertainment.

Brian is described as a very compassionate nurse who is well liked by his peers, respected by ancillary staff and adored by his patients. He explains things well and is always willing to lend a hand. Co-workers say that Brian is efficient and competent and brings smiles to those around him. Patients often mention him by name during discharge follow-up calls. Brian says his number one job duty is to provide compassionate service and exceptional care to all his patients and says the best part of his job is seeing his patients get better and go home. In his free time, Brian enjoys riding his Harley motorcycle, working around his house and relaxing with his three dogs, Zoey, Shelby and Harley.

“We were extremely proud and honored to have been asked to help support this event,” said SCU President & CEO Frank Padak, who was the Chairman of the Mardi Gras Ball. “Our goal was to raise more than $80,000 through ticket sales, sponsors, and the live and silent auction. People from throughout our area really stepped up in the effort to save lives against this disease that has already taken so many.”

Other Employee of the Year finalists included: Sherry Barber of Freeburg; Melissa Barney of Belleville; Wayne Cormier of Belleville; Robin Gunter of New Athens; Donna Holcomb of Collinsville; Ken Kohler of Waterloo; Karen Lybarger of New Athens; Nathan Majzel of Smithton; Mary Mertens of Waterloo; Katina Porzukowiak of Shiloh and Brandon Wielgus of Smithton.

Scott Credit Union also will support this year’s Relay For Life events held throughout Madison, Bond, Clinton, St. Clair, Marion and Monroe Counties, according to Scott Credit Union Community Relations Supervisor Ashleigh Deatherage. In addition to the Relay For Life events, Scott Credit Union also will sponsor American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk that will be held in O’Fallon on October 11, Deatherage noted.\

In addition to Employee of the Month awards, employees were recognized for years of service. Richard Dunck of O’Fallon and Barbara Wettig of Belleville were honored for 45 years of service and six employees were recognized for 40 years of service; they include: Karen Boeschen of Belleville; Sharen Guthrie of Smithon; Anne Huckins of Belleville; Susan Paulat of Belleville; Carmen Rigney of Belleville and Stephanie Schultz of Swansea. Employees were also honored for five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service.

SCOTT CREDIT UNION SUPPORTS YMCA OF SOUTHWEST ILLINOIS

“We are proud to be able to again help ACS with this year’s events,” she said. “The Relay for Life events really bring the fight against cancer into the local communities and give people a chance to support the effort. We had such a great experience with our volunteers being at the events last year, we felt very strongly about continuing our sponsorship.”

SCOTT CREDIT UNION DONATE GIFT CARDS TO LOCAL FISHER HOUSE

Employees of Scott Credit Union in partnership with the Armed Forces Financial Network recently presented $1,000 in thank you gift cards to help military families staying at the Fisher House in St. Louis. The 20 gift cards will be given to family members of injured or ill soldiers or veterans to help them with expenses during their stay while the soldier receives medical treatment. The Fisher House, which is at the VA Medical Center at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, is available to military family members who are wounded or injured and are undergoing extensive medical treatment. It provides warm, caring, comfortable, and convenient lodging for family members at no charge. This allows each family constant access to their loved one to help in the healing process, according to St. Louis Fisher House Foundation Chairman & CEO Kenneth Schieler. “We have heard stories of family members who stay at the Fisher House and need money for their everyday needs. Sometimes it is because their stay at the house becomes extended while their family member is being treated at the hospital,” said Scott Credit Union Community Relations Supervisor Ashleigh Deatherage. “We are honored to partner with AFFN to be able to provide these gift cards for the family members for free. They are truly a thank you to the family for their loved ones service to our country.” Scott Credit Union has supported the local Fisher House with several fund raising efforts. “When they were raising money to build the Fisher House here, we were excited about the opportunity to help with the effort to provide housing for injured soldiers’ families during their time of need,” Deatherage said. “Now, we are happy to play a small part in helping them offer support to the families who are staying at the house. We are thankful for the partnership with AFFN.” The St. Louis VA Medical Center has been designated as a “Polytrauma Center” for treating Veterans wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Center provides treatment for Veterans suffering from single or multiple traumas and specialized care for traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, advanced prosthetics, and mental health. Family members want to stay with their loved ones during treatment, but few can afford extended stays in commercial lodgings, according to Schieler. That’s when Fisher House provides free housing for the family members. Founded by New York City real estate developer Zachary Fisher, Fisher House is a nationwide private-public program that makes homes available to military families. The 16,000-square-foot St. Louis Fisher House was constructed on the Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center campus in south St. Louis. The house features 20 bedroom suites and accommodates 42 guests at a time. For more information about Fisher House in St. Louis, or to donate, visit www.fisherhouseinstl.org.
