MEMBER UPDATES HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD OF ACHIEVEMENTS IN SUSTAINABILITY In recognition for successful programs to reduce their environmental impact, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital received the Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. The award is one of the Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector. The Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon programs to eliminate mercury, reduce and recycle waste, source products sustainably and more. Winning facilities must demonstrate that they are recycling at least 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are on track to eliminate mercury, and have developed successful sustainability programs in many areas. “As health care providers, sustainability is at the core of our healing Mission and central to protecting the health of our patients, staff and community,” said Donna Meyers, MSN, RN, Director of Mission Integration/Pastoral Care/Community Benefit at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “We take pride in our sustainability programs and the positive impacts they have on the environment and the communities we serve. It is just one of the ways we live out our Franciscan values of reverence for the earth.” St. Elizabeth’s continues to grow programs and implement environmentally sound process to further reduce its footprint including hosting an upcoming electronics recycling event June 1, developing a cooking oil recycling process and investigating additional green cleaning agents to add to housekeeping’s inventory. The award will be presented at the Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards Gala, set for May 9 in San Diego at the conclusion of the CleanMed Conference & Exhibition. Along with HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, eight other hospitals within HSHS were also honored with awards from Practice Greenhealth. HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is part of the Southern Illinois Division of Hospital Sisters Health System, which also includes St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, HSHS Holy Family Hospital in Greenville and HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.
SWIC STUDENTS SWEEP CATEGORIES AT ILLINOIS SKILLS USA COMPETITION Southwestern Illinois College Technical Education students dominated four precision machining categories at the Illinois SkillsUSA challenge in Springfield in April. SWIC won a total of 16 medals in seven categories. The gold medalists are now eligible to compete at the national level. This marks the ninth year in a row that SWIC students have succeeded in qualifying for the national competition. “We’re very proud of our students and their accomplishments,” said SWIC Industrial Technology Coordinator Mark Bosworth. “We’re happy that they’ll have a chance to demonstrate these skills at the national level.” SkillsUSA is a national technical education organization that partners educators, employers and students to teach greater skills to Americans, according to its website. The SkillsUSA Championships are competitive events showcasing the best career and technical education students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. The SWIC students who brought home medals from the SkillsUSA competition include pictured, Nicholas Wittenauer of Red Bud, who was part of the First Place Mechatronics team, left, and Gavin Becherer of Troy, who was part of the First Place Automated Manufacturing team. The National SkillsUSA competition will be held in Louisville, Kentucky in June.

LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY-BELLEVILLE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR ‘ADOPT A LINDENWOOD LYNX’ The Student Development and Resource Center at Lindenwood University-Belleville launched a new program to assist students as they acclimate to life in Belleville, and applications for the program for the 2019-2020 academic year are now open. “Adopt a Lindenwood Lynx is a program that gives students an opportunity to connect with families in the local community,” said Destinee Penigar, manager of First-Year and Transfer Programs. “This program allows students not only to connect with the local community but also to have a ‘family’ and support system away from home.” Penigar said that interested families must submit an application to participate in the program, and once accepted into the program, a family will be assigned two incoming Lindenwood students to get to know throughout the academic year. “We’re looking for families who are interested in participating in a student’s life in a variety of ways,” said Penigar. “They can choose how they interact with the student, but some ideas include having students to their home for meals and holidays, attending sporting events with their students, or participating in other events in the local community. Oftentimes, we will see families provide students with cards and care packages throughout the semester, which are especially needed during times such as midterms and final exams.” According to Penigar, this is the second year the university is offering the program. The university sees that students who are connected personally to a family or individuals throughout the local community are more successful in their college careers. “We have so many first-generation students and international students who are far from home,” she said. “So, having a personal connection and being able to turn to someone who is close and familiar with the area is an invaluable asset for young people, who in many cases is on their own for the first time in their lives.” For the 2019-2020 year, the university is looking to pair first-year students, those with fewer than 24 credit hours and international students with families living in Belleville and the surrounding areas. A welcome barbecue will be held in August for families and students accepted in the program. To access applications, visit www.lindenwood.edu/belleville/academics/ support-resources/first-year-programs/adopt-a-lindenwood-lynx/. For more information, contact Penigar (618) 671-6212 or DPenigar@lindenwood.edu.

MEMBER UPDATES THEBANK OF EDWARDSVILLE AWARDS COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS TO FOUR METRO EAST AREA STUDENTS Four high school seniors from throughout the Metro East were recently selected to receive college scholarships through TheBANK of Edwardsville’s Community Scholarship Program. Each will receive $2,000 per year for four years of education. Jack Rafaelle from Edwardsville High School, Emma Deist from Father McGivney High School, Savannah Tiemann from Belleville West High School and Kate Weber from Metro-East Lutheran High School, were chosen as the 2019 scholarship recipients. The recipients were selected from a large group of applicants based on their positive leadership and character in both academic achievements and community activities. “TheBANK of Edwardsville established this scholarship program 19 years ago as a commitment to the education of our future leaders,” said Kevin Powers, President and CEO of TheBANK of Edwardsville. “We are very proud of the accomplishments of the students who were selected from this year’s impressive pool of applicants, and we look forward to watching them progress through college and enter the workforce. Congratulations to the students for all of their achievements thus far.”
Pictured, from left, are Pam Farrar, Executive Director of the ECF; Jack Rafaelle; Kevin Powers, President and CEO at TheBANK; Kate Weber; Paul Millard, Chairman of the ECF and SVP/Chief Credit Officer at TheBANK; and Savannah Tiemann. Not pictured is Emma Deist.
TheBANK introduced its Community Scholarship Program in August of 2000, pledging $1.3 million toward scholarships to be awarded over 30 years to graduating seniors of local high schools. The Edwardsville Community Foundation, which is governed by a board of local residents, administers the program with a selection committee which interviews the finalists and selects the final scholarship recipients.
As in years past, the selection committee evaluated the applicants on academic achievements, leadership and character exhibited both at school and in extracurricular activities. Selection criteria also included leadership in community activities as well as the positive impact the students have had on others. This year’s scholarship recipients are: • Jack Rafaelle, Edwardsville High School: Jack will attend Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, and plans to study Chemical Engineering. He is the son of Tim and Paula Rafaelle; • Emma Deist, Father McGivney High School: Emma will attend Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., and plans to study Biology and Agricultural Sciences on a pre-Veterinary track. She is the daughter of Phil and Lynne Deist; • Savannah Tiemann, Belleville West High School: Savannah will attend Rice University in Houston, Texas, and plans to study Chemical Engineering and Neuroscience. She is the daughter of Scott and Kim Tiemann; and • Kate Weber, Metro-East Lutheran High School: Kate will attend Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., and plans to study Psychology. She is the daughter of Wayne and Jennifer Weber. TheBANK’s Community Scholarship Program was created as part of the American Bankers Association’s “Banks of Promise” effort, which is the banking industry’s pledge toward Colin Powell’s “America’s Promise – Alliance for Youth.” TheBANK has committed to America’s Promise by partnering with not-for-profit organizations, athletes, mayors, governors, teachers, college professors and others to benefit youth through a variety of sponsorships and donations.
