WORLD TRAVELER, TRAIL BLAZER & CHAMBER MEMBER SETH HAMILTON IS BRINGING GROWTH TO THE COMMUNITY

After traveling to France and throughout Central America, Seth Hamilton returned home knowing he wanted to give back to the youth in our community. Seth now runs the nonprofit, Go! International Here is part of his story taken from go-int.org:

“Many years before we were fully incorporated in 2019, Go! International’s founder, Seth Hamilton, began working at the Christian Activity Center in East St. Louis, IL in January 2009 after going to language school in Guatemala in 2007 and in France in 2008 before traveling throughout Central America at the end of 2008. What started as foreign language and martial arts programs would grow into taking a short-term trip with three East St. Louis language and martial arts students to South Africa with Horizon International to work with AIDS orphans. They taught tae kwon do, helped tear down walls, worked in a school garden, and much more. On this trip, Seth saw one student conversing with other tourists from around the globe in Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Mandarin. He also saw how the local kids got more active when they saw the young man from East St. Louis, who was African American, leading the in the construction project. All these years later, two of the students are now married and are teachers in our programs in their hometown!

He realized that many times when working with people in impoverished communities, the people themselves are seen as the problem or the cause of the problem. Not only are they the SOLUTION, but many times they are able to accomplish things well beyond our capabilities. Seth would go on to build an international network working with impoverished communities all over the world, working together to develop local leadership to change lives and communities.”

EXTRAORDINARY NURSE RECOGNIZED AT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL RINKU PATEL, RN RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS DAISY AWARD®

Rinku Patel, RN, has been honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

Patel is a staff nurse on 4 South at Memorial Hospital Belleville and has been employed at Memorial for three years.

Nominated by a peer, Patel was recognized for her natural leadership ability and caring attitude toward both patients and staff. “I quickly recognized her as being outstanding,” said the nominating peer. “She is organized, pays good attention to detail, and is happy to help others as well as being very approachable. She keeps the manager aware of any concerns and also keeps things running smoothly.”

Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO and co-founder of The DAISY Foundation said, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Memorial are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

“Rinku shows compassion for patients and staff,” said Kristin Atchisson, RN, patient care manager on the 4 South nursing unit. “She is a nurse that can grow to any height. She is very genuine. ‘People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.’ That’s a quote from Maya Angelou, and that describes Rinku.”

In addition to the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, the Foundation expresses gratitude to the nursing profession internationally in over 4,600 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing with recognition of direct care Nurses, Nurse-led Teams, Nurse Leaders, Nurses Advancing Health Equity, Nursing Faculty, Nursing Students, Lifetime Achievement in Nursing and through the J. Patrick Barnes.

Grants for Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Medical Mission Grants their new Health Equity Grant program. More information is available at http://DAISYfoundation.org.

HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL NAMES QUARTERLY BEE AWARD RECIPIENT

HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital presented the quarterly Being Extraordinary Everyday (BEE) Award to Mark Hensch, CNA.

Hensch was nominated by a patient. The nomination read in part, “Everyone was wonderful. Mark seemed to go above and beyond. He would always check on me and met all the must-haves. He did hourly rounding. I did not have to ring for anything. He was proactive with my water jug, fresh ice and water, and washcloths, towels, etc. were given before needed. He lived the mission, (and) he lived each core value. He anticipated my needs, was knowledgeable and always had a smile. He said he was in nursing school, and I hope he continues in health care; he will make a difference in the lives he touches.”

In addition to Hensch, 11 other St. Elizabeth’s colleagues received nominations this quarter.

The BEE Award was established to recognize the colleagues outside of nursing who go beyond expectations of their daily work to exemplify the hospital’s Mission and deliver outstanding service to patients. Distribution of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital’s BEE Award is made possible through funds provided by HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation.

Nominations for future BEE and other awards at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital continue to be accepted.
