MEMBER UPDATES MLK Humanitarian Awards Honor Exceptional Student Leader, Newly-Retired Chaplain A computer science major and a former chaplain of the University were the recipients of McKendree University’s 2022 Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Awards at a celebration held on Thursday, Jan. 20. The annual awards celebrate the spirit and legacy of the Reverend Dr. King. This year’s recipients have demonstrated care and compassion, understanding and tolerance for all people, and humanitarian principles and ideals. They have also led or participated in service programs that reflect these ideals. Emmanuel Segbedzi, a junior from Accra, Ghana and resident of Lebanon, Ill., is the president of the Student Government Association (SGA), a UNI 101 peer mentor, a New Student Orientation (NSO) leader and a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. A valued athlete on the Bearcat cross country and track and field teams, Segbedzi also frequently volunteers for the Lyn Huxford Center for Community Service and Center for Faith & Spirituality on campus. He has demonstrated a desire to further social justice issues at McKendree, improve communication through the McKendree App and launch an inter-college allegiance board. “I am very pleased to be nominated,” Segbedzi said upon receiving the award. “This award isn’t just for me alone, but for the faculty and staff who made this possible. Your words of wisdom are always in my heart.” Rev. Dr. B. Tim Harrison of Lebanon, Ill., was presented with the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Humanitarian Award, the first of its kind. Harrison served the University for 23 years, retiring in 2021. Throughout his time as McKendree’s chaplain, he brought meaningful spiritual enhancement to campus and supported students individually on their faith journeys. He led dozens of immersion trips locally and abroad in order to give students a broader world view, and he has exhibited great passion in furthering social justice issues and encouraging inclusion and diversity on campus. After his retirement, he returned to church ministry as the minister of Friedens United Church of Christ in Troy, Ill. “I am humbled and honored to receive this award,” Harrison said. “We give these awards to inspire others. My goal, my prayer is that someday we will love and care for one another without the need for an award.” Guest speaker Dr. Karla Scott, professor of communication at Saint Louis University and author of The Language of Strong Black Womanhood, presented her keynote speech, which highlighted Dr. King’s work as a humanitarian and the concept of equity. She charged attendees to practice the qualities of a good humanitarian in their own lives like the two awardees. Founded in 1828, McKendree University’s historic Lebanon, Ill., campus is 25 miles from St. Louis, Mo. McKendree also offers degree programs online. It is one of U.S. News’ “Best Regional Universities,” “Best Value Schools” and “Best Colleges for Veterans” in the Midwest. www.mckendree.edu

MEMBER UPDATES SWIC PMT Program receives national accreditation renewal Once again, Southwestern Illinois College Industrial Training programs have shown their mettle in metal. The SWIC Precision Machining Technology program received reaccreditation from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills recently. This accreditation signifies that the SWIC programs maintain industry standards for machinist training. It is the third consecutive time SWIC has received the accreditation since the standard was established by NIMS in 2009. Accreditation will last through 2026. “We’ve worked hard to make sure our students receive the stateof-the-art training needed to work in industry,” said Industrial Technology Program Coordinator Mark Bosworth. “We’re proud to continue to work with NIMS to maintain our accreditation.” SWIC offers an Associate in Applied Science degree in Precision Machining Technology, plus certificates in CNC Machining, Mastercam software, SolidWorks software and Advanced CNC Programming, Precision Machining Technology. SWIC is rated highly in all eight evaluation criteria: Program Purpose; Facilities; Equipment, Tooling, and Measuring Devices; Program Features; Administration and Management; Instructional Staff; Student Credentials; and Program Advisory Committee. SWIC programs will maintain their NIMS Machining Level I National Standard rating. Additionally, students can use their training at SWIC to earn NIMS machining credentials. For more information on SWIC Industrial Technology programs, call 618-931-0600, ext. 7475.

Belleville Area Humane Society Creates SafePets Program For Domestic Violence Survivors The Belleville Area Humane Society (BAHS) and RedRover recognize that sometimes life brings challenges that make caring for pets difficult or impossible. As an alternative to surrendering a beloved pet, BAHS has created, and RedRover has awarded grant funding to support the first animal assistance program in Southern Illinois providing temporary care for the pets of those experiencing domestic violence, so that every family member can find safety. One in three women experience domestic abuse within their lifetime. BAHS understands that very few domestic violence shelters allow pets (only 10% nationally). Because of this, 48% of survivors delay leaving an abusive relationship because they don’t want to leave a pet behind. While the survivor’s owned pet is with BAHS, the SafePets program provides appropriate care for the pet(s), such as vaccinations, spay/neuter, preventative, and even heartworm treatment. Jorden Sherman, BAHS Community Outreach Manager and program founder notes, “We are so grateful for RedRover’s support. This funding empowers our shelter to build safe housing for pets of survivors. This generous grant from RedRover also allows us to make necessary safety improvements so that our facility and staff stay safe as well. We are very excited for the future of this program and the immense positive impact it will have on the lives of survivors and their furry family members.” BAHS believes every aspect of their multifaceted outreach program must support those most vulnerable in the community. Every single time a client, and especially a survivor, is able to keep the family pets, instead of surrendering them into the animal welfare system, creates a very special moment that showcases Belleville Area Humane Society’s mission at its best.

MEMBER UPDATES Over 15,500 Illinois Households Benefited from Illinois American Water’s Customer Assistance Programs in 2020 and 2021 Over the last two years, Illinois American Water helped more than 15,500 residential customers receive financial assistance to help keep water service flowing. The support came through the Company’s customer assistance program, H2O Help to Others, as well as customer grants credited to qualifying accounts. “We understand it can be hard to get back on track once an account falls behind. We want to help our customers receive the assistance they need and avoid service interruption,” said Beth Matthews, Vice President of Operations. Illinois American Water’s H2O Help to Others program offers financial assistance to residential customers in need. The program is administered by Salvation Army agencies within the company’s service area. Information, including Salvation Army contact information, can be found online at illinoisamwater.com under Customer Service & Billing in the Customer Assistance Program section. The H2O Help to Others program provides customers who have experienced a financial hardship up to $200 in assistance, regardless of income. Matthews explained, “Our customer assistance program is not based on income to support an inclusive approach for all of our residential customers who may be experiencing a hardship. It’s important we do what we can to help.” The H2O Help to Others program is supported by contributions from Illinois American Water as well as contributions from customers. Information regarding the program and how to donate is included on Illinois American Water’s customer bills. In addition to financial assistance, customers may also qualify to enroll in a payment plan to pay the balance of their bill over time. The company also offers budget billing so residential customers can pay a fixed monthly payment over a period of 12 months. Customers are not automatically enrolled in these programs and must call 800-422-2782 to enroll. More information can be found at illinoisamwater.com. Customers may also be eligible for assistance through a new federal program - Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). LIHWAP is a new, temporary federal emergency program to help qualifying low-income customers pay their overdue water and wastewater bills. Qualifying customers can receive one crisis grant each for water service and wastewater service. More information is available at https://www2.illinois.gov/dceo/CommunityServices/ HomeWeatherization/CommunityActionAgencies/Pages/default.aspx. MEMBER UPDATES Think spring and improve your golf swing: Titleist Performance Institute certified golf program now accepting participants Getting back to golf this spring can be an easier transition with the help of a golf-focused program that puts science behind your swing. HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Outpatient Therapy is reintroducing a program to help golfers improve their flexibility, power and strength. The program is also designed to help golfers get back on the course after an injury or surgery. Torrey Welsch, PT, DPT, OCS, physical therapist and coordinator at St. Elizabeth’s McKendree Metro Rec Plex therapy clinic, received certification from the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) in order to conduct this distinct and detailed care plan. TPI certified golf experts, who are sponsored by the makers of Titleist golf balls and equipment, can quickly identify any physical restrictions that may be limiting a player’s performance. The Golf Performance Program at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s can offer a comprehensive health and wellness approach to local golfers, of any age and skill level, to achieve their goals. The program includes screenings, injury evaluation, rehabilitation and fitness programs centered around each specific player. “We are excited at the opportunity to offer this comprehensive performance evaluation tailored to an individual’s swing technique and build a repeatable, efficient swing,” said Welsch. “TPI is the premier certification program in the country dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing.” TPI used over a decade of data, from players at all levels including, amateur and PGA tour professionals, to develop its own teaching program designed for professional golf instructors, medical practitioners and fitness trainers to help players achieve the most efficient golf swing. Welsch noted, “This program can be a benefit to many players including golfers of all skill levels who want to improve their game and general fitness and total joint surgery patients or patients recovering from other injuries who want to return to golf.” The general health benefits from golf are both physical and mental, including: • Building strength and endurance • Aerobic fitness • Improving balance, core stability and flexibility • Stress reduction The Golf Performance Program is available at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Outpatient Therapy clinic, located at 209 Rec Plex Drive in O’Fallon. McKendree University formally installs new chaplin

On Sunday, Feb. 20, McKendree University celebrated its 194th year during its Founders Day celebration at the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts on its Lebanon campus. During the event, the Rev. Dr. Beverly L. Wilkes-Null was formally installed as the University’s new chaplain. Rev. Wilkes-Null, the former directing pastor at Highland Hope United Methodist Church in Highland, Ill., joined McKendree last summer after the former chaplain, Rev. Dr. Tim Harrison, retired. The campus community at large formally welcomed her to the community during this celebration, with many speakers already singing her praises. “Rev. Beverly is a wonderful person who would give you the clothing off her back,” said Dr. Joni Bastian, vice president of student affairs, in her words of welcome. “In just a short time, she has made her mark with her love and support of students, faculty and staff.” “This day would not be possible without each and every one of you,” Rev. Wilkes-Null said to the crowd after accepting her installation. “I thank God for blessing me with this new family; this is my Heaven on Earth – all of you. You have to get excited when a dream becomes a reality and has staying power. In 1828, it wasn’t just a dream but passion to make McKendree a reality so we could be standing here today. Our history, our story – the Bearcat story – is still happening, for there are days ahead of us yet to be revealed.”

MEMBER UPDATES Death certificates decoded: By Dr. Ellen Middendorf, Medical Director- Hospice of Southern Illinois Uses of Death Certificates Death certificates have multiple purposes. They serve as a permanent record of death and typically the deceased’s estate requires them for the burial and settlement. They provide documentation of an opinion regarding the cause, circumstances, and manner of death. Public health purposes are also a common reason behind the distribution of death certificates. These purposes include evaluating the general health of the population, as well as determining the prevalence of medical conditions among certain cohorts of the population. Death certificates provide data to triage medical research needs and help determine the appropriation of resources regarding health service grants State statutes govern Death certificates. Certification and completion of the certificate is typically the responsibility of the attending physician, or the physician in charge of the patient’s care, at the time of death. Effective January 1, 2022, in Illinois, an advanced practice registered nurse may complete and sign a death certificate. According to 410 ILCS 535/ Vital Records Act, the completed and signed by the provider within 48 hours after death, except when the death is subject to the coroner’s or medical examiner’s investigation. Also, each death that occurs in Illinois shall be registered by filing a death certificate with the local registrar of the district in which the death occurred, or the body was found, within seven days after such death and before cremation or removal of the body from the State with the same exception for coroner’s or medical examiner’s cases. Components of the Document Regarding the medical section of the document itself, there are two components: the cause of death and contributing conditions. The cause of death is based on the medical opinion of the provider. When there is not 100% certainty as to the cause of death, it is appropriate for the provider to document “unknown” or “probable”. The cause of death includes three sections: mechanism, immediate cause, and underlying cause of death. As an example, a patient’s immediate cause of death could be acute respiratory distress syndrome, due to pneumonia, due to COVID-19. Contributing conditions could include diabetes and obesity as both increases the risk of morbidity and mortality from COVID- 19. The National Center for Health Statistics also collects data from death certificates about risk factors. Death certificates inquire as to whether tobacco contributed to the death. In addition, one section asks if the deceased was pregnant within the year or if the death was work-related. Deaths that fall under the jurisdiction of the medical examiner or coroner vary by region. The statutes and regulations of local health codes publish reporting requirements. As a general rule, reportable deaths include accidents, suicides, homicides, poisoning, drug intoxication, a disease with potential public health threat, deaths resulting from employment, deaths related to medical or surgical complications, suspicious deaths, deaths of individuals in police custody, and unattended deaths. Thus, what seems like a simple document, has a large reach in terms of public health. To complete the document comprehensively and accurately, it is imperative to have inclusive medical records. At Hospice of Southern Illinois, we strive to complete death certificates for our families timely and accurately.

MEMBER UPDATES IMPACT Strategies Completes Two Projects at Fenton Logistics Park IMPACT Strategies has completed two tenant finish projects at the Fenton Logistics Park in Fenton, Missouri. The first project is a 39,000 square-foot expansion for BASF; the second is a 2,100 square-foot tenant fit-out for Curology. The BASF expansion utilized adjacent vacant space to add 18,000 square feet of general storage and 21,000 square feet of aerosol storage. The aerosol storage space required special fire rating requirements for two interior overhead doors and fire shutters, as well as 21,000 square feet of drop ceiling with hold down clips. In 2018, IMPACT Strategies completed its first project for BASF in the Logistics Park’s Building 3 - a 78,000 square-foot space for BASF’s agricultural services division. The 2,100 square-foot Curology project added a break room, office, and restroom to the company’s existing space. In 2020, IMPACT completed a 1,400 square-foot expansion which included office space, a meeting room and breakroom in Building 2. This expansion enabled Curology to utilize 35,000 square feet of warehouse space for packaging. “We’re extremely pleased to continue our work at the Fenton Logistics Park with these latest projects,” said Mark Hinrichs, President at IMPACT Strategies. “This rapidly expanding development is a boon to the local economy, adding jobs and opportunities. MEMBER UPDATES SWIC offers Respiratory Care degree – profession ranked 16th in the nation Southwestern Illinois College Respiratory Care Program Coordinator Diane Dodd could have told you what a great profession Respiratory Care is even before U.S. News and World Report named it the 6th Best Health Care Job and the 16th Best Job in the country for 2022. “Respiratory Therapists are essential frontline workers who help patients with a variety of respiratory and cardiac issues get better and get back to their healthy lifestyle,” Dodd said. “They play a vital role in hospitals and patient care.” The magazine ranked the profession high on its list based on the combination of factors such as salary, job market, job satisfaction and stress level. SWIC offers a two-year, 71-semester-credit Associate in Applied Science degree in Respiratory Care. The program prepares students for entry-level practitioner positions in the profession. Respiratory therapists have a high level of patient contact. RTs, under the supervision of a physician, see patients of all ages to assist in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of pulmonary problems. The practice of respiratory care entails: monitoring, evaluating and reporting patients’ cardiopulmonary status, providing treatments and ventilatory support to keep the airway open. In addition, RT’s perform sleep studies, metabolic studies, patient, community and family education, home care, discharge planning and follow up, as well as pulmonary rehabilitation. Applications for the SWIC program are accepted Sept. 1 through May 1 for the following fall semester. Averaged over a three-year period, 98 percent of SWIC graduates passed the national certification examination required for licensure. SWIC graduate survey results, also averaged over a three-year period, indicate 94.7 percent of graduates are employed in the profession within 12 months after completing the program. “RTs are in high demand,” Dodd said. “There is a nationwide shortage and hospitals are looking for new graduates.” According to the U.S. News and World Report article, the profession is expected to grow by 23 percent between 2020 and 2030, with an estimated 31,100 jobs opening in that time. In addition, the median salary for Respiratory Therapists in the nation was $62,810 in 2020. “The program is very hands on,” Dodd said. “Our students work in clinical facilities as part of their education and most students receive multiple job offers from their clinical sites before they even graduate.” For more information about the SWIC Respiratory Care program, visit swic.edu/respiratory-care or contact Dodd at 618235-2700, ext. 5907 or diane.dodd@swic.edu.
