COVER STORY OLD TOWN MARKET CELEBRATES ITS 20TH YEAR Belleville’s Old Town Farmers’ Market is ready to kick-off its 20th Season on May 4th with what will be the best year ever! The Market pops up every Saturday through November 2nd from 7:30 am—noon on the first Block of South Charles. In addition to many of our loyal vendors that have been with us from the start like the Turkey Hill Grange, we have many new vendors to supply you with all you need! But what else do we have to offer new this year? * Live music will again be provided to Market goers from 9 am—noon each Saturday. This has been made possible through the kind support of Kathy Mordini—Avenue Realty Associates, David C. Slimack—State Farm, and Mark Dill—Lender with US Bank. * The City of Belleville has kindly provided the Market with a much needed storage option. When the City acquired land to expand the parking lot next to the Market, they agreed to partner with the Market and allow an existing building to be used for storage and as a source of electricity. (Great idea, Lori Powell!) This is a HUGE donation to the market and we truly appreciate it. * The Market has always wanted to provide healthy food alternatives to all members of our community. Spearheaded by Amy Funk of the University of Illinois Extension Office, in coordination with the Chronic Disease Prevention Workgroup, and graciously funded by St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, we will be able to accept SNAP cards for the first time! All of this couldn’t have happened without the support of “The Friends of The Old Town Market”, a group of dedicated volunteers who provided ideas, human power, contacts, vendor solicitation and more! CHAMBER NEWS OFFICE MANAGER BETH TUCKER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT We are both delighted and saddened to announce that Beth Tucker is retiring from the Chamber. After ten and a half years of service, Beth’s last day will be Friday, May 31, 2019. Beth has been a tremendous employee. Beth came to the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce to be the office manager as a second career after retiring from Bank of America as Project Manager, working on quality of service writing employee newsletters and more. Beth’s retirement is our loss, but welldeserved. We are throwing one last party for her Friday, May 31 from 11am-1pm at the Chamber office. Members are welcome to stop by. We all wish Beth the very best in her retirement. A job description for this position will be posted soon. Please check the Chamber’s job board for more information.

CHAMBER NEWS MEMBERS MAKE DRIVE AWAY HUNGER ANOTHER GREAT SUCCESS For the 12th year in a row, Belleville schools and the Chamber’s Education Committee have hosted the “Drive Away Hunger” food drive and our members helps make this year a huge success! The demand on our area food pantries is overwhelming and they rely on this drive every year to keep them able to continue serving those in need the Belleville area. The Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee helps the area schools collect items to distribute via school buses. We had an overwhelming response from our members this year and send a thanks to all those that participated in this year’s event!

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS On Thursday, April 4, St. Paul’s Senior Community welcomed the Belleville Chamber for the Chamber’s monthly Business After Hours. St. Paul’s Senior Community began its service to the community in 1926 and continues today as a not-for-profit, faith-based Life Plan Retirement Community for active seniors, offering a full spectrum of health services. St. Paul’s Senior Community is licensed by the state of Illinois and certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The community is sponsored by The United Church of Christ and governed by a Board of Directors comprised of individuals from the congregation of St. Paul’s Church, Christ Church, Trinity Church, and the local community. St. Paul’s Senior Community completed construction in 2015 of a new licensed building to complement the apartment residence. The new Senior Community features a state of the art household model of care. The 6 licensed households include memory care, skilled nursing care, assisted living/shelter care, and a dedicated household for short term Medicare Rehabilitation. Each household will be home to approximately 15-20 residents, and each household will contain its own dining room, kitchen, hearth room, and spa – all the comforts of home!

EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT Opaa! has Belle Valley taste buds screaming “YUM!” The Belle Valley Board of Education and Administrative Team believe the relationship between nutrition, health and learning are fundamental pillars of a child’s development. Today Belle Valley is faced with serving a great number of children who attend school without the proper nutrient intake from home. The key for a school cafeteria is to find food students like that is full of the nutrients vital for growth and mental development. This is a real challenge in today’s fast food world! Last year, the Belle Valley administrative team began seeking input from students in hopes of finding the right choice of food items to create an environment where students would eat everything on their plate because they actually liked it. To fill that order, Belle Valley knew they had to find a professional food service management company that believed in creating freshly prepared “scratch” meals on a daily basis. Superintendent R. Dane Gale began the process of seeking out such a food service management company, judging the companies first and foremost, by their desire to put kids first each and every time they made a food choice decision. To fill this order, Belle Valley School chose Opaa! Food Service based out of Chesterfield, Missouri, because they had a long history of providing delicious, nutritional meals for children. For 2018-2019, students at Belle Valley School are now able to choose from a variety of made from scratch entrees. They also self-serve as much fresh fruit and vegetables as they would like to eat. In addition, fresh salads are prepared daily and a salad bar is an alternative option to the hot menu choices. Through Opaa!, Belle Valley is pleased to have a registered dietician and chef working together to plan every meal so they taste good, while also meeting the multitude of federal nutritional guidelines. All of the transitional hard work has far exceeded expectations. This year’s kitchen staff has served over 89,000 meals to date, a significant (over 35%) increase in the number of students that are eating breakfast and lunch over last year. Now, students freely admit they love the food and are excited to have fresh fruits and vegetables daily. The impact this has on overall school performance, according to Superintendent Gale, is immeasurable! Thank you Opaaa! and the Belle Valley kitchen staff for all you do for our children!

LEADERSHIP BELLEVILLE Regional Growth Day The 2019 Leadership Belleville class participated in Regional Growth Day on April 26. Regional Growth Day teaches the class about the economic impact of Scott Air Force Base and regional growth in the Metro East area. The class began their day at Scott Air Force Base where they got to take a tour and have lunch with some of the airmen. After lunch, the class traveled to Mid-America St. Louis Airport and met with director, Tim Cantwell. They later took part in a panel discussion on economic development with speakers Adam Hill (The Sonoma Group), Erika Kennett (Illinois DCEO), Ronda Sauget (Leadership Council), and Dennis Wilmsmeyer (America’s Central Port). The class wrapped up their final day before graduation with Eric Schauster (The City of Belleville) talking about leadership and economic development in Belleville. A special thanks goes out to all of our speakers as well as our day coordinators, Christine Spargur and Eric Schauster (Class of 2000). By joining the Leadership Belleville program, I hope to learn about the community and develop certain skills to promote the community and businesses. As a banker it is important to develop strong relationships with the businesses in Belleville as it will help the community grow and succeed.
I found out about Leadership Belleville through Annissa McCaskill, Director of Economic Development for Belleville, while meeting with her to discuss a potential development project. Knowing that I had recently retired from the military and moved to Belleville, she suggested that it would be a great way to fast-track getting to know up-and-coming leaders of Belleville from across a broad spectrum of professions, as well as meeting the current leaders of of Belleville government, education, and industry, at the monthly class meetings.
Leadership Belleville has helped me grow as an individual in the workplace and in the community as I became a member of the board at the YMCA in downtown Belleville. I have been able to use the leadership skills to make a difference in the community.
The course has definitely lived up to expectations. We have had some very interesting presentations and tours along the way, and had a chance to get to know a number of community leaders that otherwise we may never have had a chance to meet. Plus, of course, gaining a personal connection with all my fellow classmates has been a great experience and I look forward to meeting up with them occasionally after we all graduate.
I think this program is a great idea for helping build better leaders today, but also as an investment in the future of Belleville. The Chamber Connection Page 13

MEMBER UPDATES BANK OF BELLEVILLE ANNOUNCES ENHANCEMENTS TO ITS MANAGEMENT TEAM Ronald R. Stephens has been promoted to President and Chief Executive Officer of Bank of Belleville as well as its holding company, Belleville Bancorp, Inc. Stephens was part of the team that organized Bank of Belleville when it was established in 2005. He had previously held the position of Executive Vice President/Chief Credit Officer and most recently served the Bank as Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer. “This promotion represents the continuation of our management succession plan. Ron has played an integral leadership role for our Bank since its inception,” said Wyatt Rawlings III, Chairman of Bank of Belleville and Belleville Bancorp. “We are very fortunate to have someone such as Ron to lead our team and continue the mission of serving our clients, our communities and our shareholders.” “I am excited to lead Bank of Belleville into its next period of growth,” Stephens said. “Simply stated, our strategic plans are centered around staying true to our core values - being the best community and client-focused bank as possible resulting in the continued increase in long-term value to our shareholders” Former President and CEO, Kevin M. Pesko, will remain in a key leadership role with the Bank, serving as Market President of St. Clair County. During Mr. Pesko’s tenure as CEO, the Bank began operations as a de novo institution. Today, the Bank has more than $200 million in total assets and operates as the only locally-owned independent community bank headquartered in Belleville, Illinois. “Our relationship has always been more of a partnership,” Pesko said. “So, while I am proud we will have Ron to direct our team and the bank’s future, he is also to be congratulated for his leadership and resourcefulness since the bank’s beginning.” “We are extremely grateful for the leadership that Kevin has provided for the last thirteen years,” Rawlings said. “In his new position as Market President, Kevin will ensure that we continue to provide the signature level of service that our clients have come to know and expect from this institution.” Further enhancing the Bank’s Executive Management Team, Karl Abert was promoted to Chief Credit Officer and Jennifer Warren was promoted to Chief Operations Officer. Warren joined the bank in 2017 after considerable experience in community banking. MEMBER UPDATES VOLUNTEERING COULD HELP YOU LIVE A HEALTHIER, HAPPIER LIFE AND HELP EASE DEPRESSION Recently, the Corporation for National & Community Service, the federal agency responsible for the nation’s volunteer and service efforts, released an independent report stating the health benefits from continuous volunteering of people 55 and older. The research examined how participation in national service contributes to changes in health and wellbeing of Senior Corps volunteers in the Senior Companion, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Foster Grandparent programs. In the report, after just two years of service senior volunteers showed increased life satisfaction, feelings of less isolation and an improvement in their companionship status, compared to older adults who do not volunteer. Also, 84 percent of senior volunteers reported improved or stable health and 78 percent felt less depressed. Some local senior volunteers with the Southwestern Illinois College Programs and Services for Older Persons echo these research results: “Every morning when I volunteer as a Foster Grandparent, I know the kids love me and it keeps me going,” said Ms. Louise Lewis, of Centreville. “Working with the babies keeps me young. I see people who are younger than me with walkers and I don’t need that.” “Each Wednesday is a brand new day of hope and sunshine,” said RSVP volunteer Gloria Ann Crowder of Belleville. “Thank you for this opportunity to keep me smiling and seeing hope in action.” “Our Senior Companion, Carol Carter, has been a blessing to us ever since the first day she walked into our home,” said Margaret Kohl, of Granite City. “Beyond being dependable and faithful, Carol has been a great Companion for Frank when I’m away at work and running errands. We have become so close to Carol that we consider her part of our family.” Each year, Senior Corps engages approximately 220,000 Americans 55 and older through its Foster Grandparent, Senior Companion, and RSVP programs – all addressing some of the nation’s most pressing challenges. The Foster Grandparent Program provides limited-income seniors the opportunity to serve as one-on-one tutors and mentors to young people with special needs. The RSVP program has close to 1,000 senior volunteers working throughout our service area and the Senior Companion Program helps over 230 older adults maintain their dignity and independence, while also assisting caregivers by giving them a break. MEMBER UPDATES LINDENWOOD BELLEVILLE’S PRUNTY, STUDENTS SELECTED FOR 2019 INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCE AWARD GRANT Lindenwood University-Belleville Professor of Psychology Dr. Trisha Prunty and four of her students – Katie Landsbaum, Bessie Flores, Nikki Thomas, and Katie DeLuka – were selected as the recipients of the 2019 Instructional Recourse Award Grant by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology. The funding will be used to support a project entitled, “Using Guided Outlines for Principles of Psychology,” in which the four students will create guided notes as supplement for students in the university’s Principles of Psychology courses. “I think what most excites me about this award is that four students helped write the grant, so they received first-hand experience in grant writing, not to mention that our grant was funded,” said Prunty. “This is a wholly student-centered project, which is a win-win for the university and students.” The Society for the Teaching of Psychology awards small grants for research or other development that leads to an instructor resource for other professors of psychology. Prunty said she developed the idea to teach two Principles of Psychology classes and provide students with guided notes developed by the four student-researchers. From that, students in the Principles of Psychology courses will have additional resources to support them in their studies. “The students and I workshopped, and they learned how to properly present a grant argument,” explained Prunty. “Toward the submission deadline, I polished up the proposal with them. It is as much their project as mine.” According to Prunty, the grant writing project was actually a warm-up writing project, as these four student researchers are also in the process of writing manuscripts for original student research surrounding the topics of gender and authority and cat-calling behavior. “I love research, and to have this opportunity to help write these manuscripts as an undergraduate student is amazing,” said Thomas. MEMBER UPDATES SWIC BLUE STORM RADIO, STUDENTS WIN BIG AT NYC IBS CONFERENCE Blue Storm Radio, Southwestern Illinois College’s internet radio station, and broadcasting students recently, won awards of excellence in four categories at the 79th Annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System International Radio/Television/ Digital Media Conference in New York City. “Our broadcast program is only four-years old and is winning awards placing it in the top 5 percent of college and university radio stations nationally, said SWIC Speech/Communication Professor Mac Chamblin, who teaches Introduction to Radio Production. Students raised funds to send Michelle McIntosh, Adam Brammer, both of Belleville, and Marcella Miller of Granite City from SWIC to the event. LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY-BELLEVILLE SENIOR EARNS INTERNSHIP WITH US SKI AND SNOWBOARD OLYMPIC TEAM The Lindenwood University-Belleville Athletics Department is excited to announce that senior Maddison Beck, St. Louis, Mo., of the Lady Lynx soccer team has earned a summer internship as a strength and conditioning coach with the United States Ski and Snowboard Olympic Team. An exercise science major from Webster Groves, Mo., Beck transferred to Lindenwood Belleville in 2016 as a sophomore and played three seasons with the women’s soccer team. Throughout her career as a defender, Beck has recorded 13 goals and 29 points through 56 games with the Lady Lynx, earning herself the title of team captain her senior year in 2018. Beck also coordinates the offseason workouts for the team, and is the president of the Student Athlete Leadership Team, promoting leadership opportunities and diversity throughout the athletic program. She is also a two-time academic all-conference nominee and an NAIA Daktronics scholar-athlete who will graduate in May. “I knew that I wanted to go the route of the strength and conditioning part of athletics over the last few months leading up to graduation,” Beck said. “The trainer I have been shadowing at my gym brought this internship opportunity to my attention. Since I love the outdoors and exploring different aspects of athletic training, I said, ‘why not?’” Beck will be working at a training facility in Park City, Utah, as a strength and conditioning coach from the end of April to late August. “The opportunity presented itself, and I couldn’t be more excited, because this is exactly what I wanted,” Beck said. “The internship is a good mix of what hobbies I enjoy doing and what I love doing with my major.” Beck will begin her internship in just a few weeks, working with the best athletes that the United States has to offer with the Ski and Snowboard Olympic Team. SWIC STUDENTS TO DISPLAY THEIR WORKS AT SCHMIDT ART CENTER Southwestern Illinois College art students will showcase their artistic talents when the William and Florence Schmidt Art Center and Southwestern Illinois College Art department team to host the annual SWIC Student Art and Design Exhibition. This year’s show kicks off Thursday, April 25 with an opening reception from 6-8 p.m. in the Schmidt Art Center at the SWIC Belleville Campus, 2500 Carlyle Ave. The award ceremony begins at 7 p.m. Student artwork created from a variety of media – including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, mixed media, digital imaging, metal, plastic, graphic design, and more – will be on display through Thursday, May 9. ELIZABETH’S CENTER FOR WOUND CARE AND HYPERBARIC MEDICINE RECOGNIZED WITH NATIONAL AWARD FOR CLINICAL EXCELLENCE HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine recently received a National Award for Clinical Excellence from Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services. The Center received this honor for providing outstanding clinical outcomes for twelve consecutive months, including patient satisfaction higher than 92 percent, and a minimum wound healing rate of at least 91 percent within 30 median days to heal. “We are pleased to have received this national distinction,” shared St. Elizabeth’s President and CEO Patti Fischer. “The high quality, safe care that our Wound Care Center provides is often life changing for many of the patients that enter its doors.
