Signs of spring … and seasonal allergies! Tips for allergy sufferers from HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital
As temperatures in the metro-east area continue to rise, medical providers at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital are encouraging spring allergy sufferers to create a strategy to combat the upcoming season. From diagnosing preexisting allergies to recommending medications, providers say now is the time to prepare for the start of the allergy season beginning in April or May. HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Convenient Care (previously called UrgiCare), can see allergy sufferers without an appointment. The walk-in service is especially helpful when someone has a severe allergy attack and can’t get an appointment at their primary physician’s office or if it occurs outside of clinic hours or on weekends. Dr. Vijaya Thothathri, a provider at St. Elizabeth’s Convenient Care, shared, “Knowing which allergies trigger you and having medications on hand before the season starts can make a big difference because it can take a couple of weeks for medications to be effective.” Most people’s seasonal allergy and asthma symptoms are triggered by pollen. The types of pollens that trigger symptoms vary from person to person and region to region. Pollen is produced by most trees in the spring; grasses during late spring and summer; and ragweed and other late-producing plants in late summer and early fall. Many allergists agree pollen counts are increasing on a yearly basis and the trend will likely continue. Beyond medication, here are some additional tips for allergy sufferers: ·
Do not dry your clothes on a clothesline, as the pollen in the air will stick to them.
· Keep windows closed and use air conditioning during peak pollen seasons. ·
If you have asthma, avoid cutting grass or wear a mask.
·
If you are outdoors during the day, shower at night and change your clothes.
· If you are bothered by hay fever or asthma, keep your grass cut short or replace it with a ground cover, such as Irish moss, bunch grass or dichondra. These options do not produce a significant amount of pollen. If allergy symptoms become severe, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Convenient Care is located within the O’Fallon Medical Building at 1512 N. Green Mount Road in O’Fallon and is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Patients can walk-in without an appointment to receive care for minor illnesses, sprains and strains and minor lacerations. Patients may also reserve their spot in line, see current wait times and receive text message notifications to help them arrive shortly before their appointment with the SaveMySpot online scheduling tool available at https://www.hshs.org/StElizabeths/Services/ConvenientCare.

MEMBER UPDATES A Message from standard rule promotions Two years ago I wrote a blog for Standard Rule talking about our “new normal” and the challenges our company faced at the onset of the pandemic. I would have never believed that 2 years later I would be writing again to announce an incredible change at Standard Rule. As with most small businesses, we have had to adjust and change many things we have done for the past 70 years just to survive the great shutdown. One of those has been very personal to me. After 30 years with the company, I have stepped down from Standard Rule to a position with a marketing company in California. This left the daily operations of Standard Rule in need of a full time operating manager. As of October 2021 my son, Calahan McCollum, has been running the day to day operations of Standard Rule. His new outlook and advanced knowledge in technology along with the combined years of experience from our sales and graphics team: Jane Becker, Dawn HeimannNeumann, Sarah Hillebrand and Mike McCollum our company will not miss a beat with production and the continued customer service you are so accustomed to receiving. Our location at 5600 West Main St in Belleville is still there, but we continue to work remotely - we are sharing our space with Yoga On Main (the wonderful new Yoga studio in Belleville - yogaonmainllc.com). You can still find us online at standardrule. com, you can contact Cal at cal@standardrule.com or via phone at 618-416-7539. We look forward to serving our community for another 70 years.
greensfelder Announces New Southern Illinois Office Location To Greensfelder clients and friends: We are pleased to announce that effective April 25, 2022, Greensfelder’s Southern Illinois office will be located in O’Fallon, Illinois near the intersection of Highways 50 and 64. MEMBER UPDATES McKendree Professor of Management and Marketing is UMC Exemplary Teacher of the Year Dr. Jean Sampson, professor of management and marketing at McKendree University, recently received the 2022 United Methodist Exemplary Teacher of the Year Award. This award was given by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. Selection criteria include excellence in teaching, civility and concern for students and colleagues, commitment to value-centered education, and service to students, the institution and the community. Sampson earned her undergraduate degree from McKendree in 1983. She began teaching at her alma mater in 2005 and has been making a positive impact on the campus community ever since. In addition to serving as the chair of the School of Business since 2016, she has won many prestigious awards, including the William Norman Grandy Award in 2014 and Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award in 2012. Sampson has been acknowledged as an outstanding instructor who prepares her students for various roles in the business world. “In each course, no matter how jam-packed with students it is, she creates an easy-going, respectful environment,” said Dr. Alan Alewine, associate provost. “She particularly shines in her business ethics course where she focuses on personal responsibility, inclusivity and good citizenship.” McKendree business students know Sampson as caring, friendly and approachable. Throughout the pandemic, a time in which feeling connected to professors in an online format was difficult for students, Sampson went above and beyond to add a personal touch by posting videos, checking in with her students and informing them about what was coming up for the week. This level of care and extra effort has made her more than worthy of the award. Sampson, who champions people with disabilities in the workforce and instills a sense of lifelong learning in her students, excels in other ways by regularly volunteering, attending campus events that her students are involved in, teaching University 101, taking on new advisees, picking up classes to teach last minute and happily serving on committees and working on projects that aren’t typically within the scope of her daily responsibilities. “Dr. Sampson’s accomplishments fit perfectly within the award criteria framework – winners are champions of civility and concern for others and excel at service. She stays positive in her work as chair and creates and maintains a collegial atmosphere, insists upon civility and serves as the ideal anchor for the School of Business,” Alewine said. “She has the ‘heart of a Bearcat,’ warranting her receipt of the United Methodist Exemplary Teacher of the Year Award.”

MEMBER UPDATES Extraordinary Nurse recognized at Memorial Hali Gamblin receives prestigious Daisy Award Hali Gamblin, RN, has been honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. Gamblin is a medical-surgical nurse at Memorial Hospital Shiloh and has been employed at Memorial for 1 year. Nominated by patient families, Gamblin was recognized for her caring nature and willingness to go the extra mile. “Hali was my husband’s nurse 4 days of his stay,” said a member of the nominating family. “She was kind to us both, explained everything to us, always had his meds on time, checked on him all through her shift. She even worked an extra 4 hours one day. She was outstanding, compassionate and kind – professional.” Another family said Hali helped their son during his COVID admission when they couldn’t be with him. “From the start, Hali treated him like he was one of her own children,” the patient’s mother said. “Hali made it possible for us to get through this hospital stay with minimal worry. I love her disposition and caring nature. She really went the extra mile.” Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO and co-founder of The DAISY Foundation said, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Memorial are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
