WITH A PLAN
In May 1958, Memorial Hospital opened its doors to the Belleville community with a plan to become the area’s healthcare leader. And our commitment to Belleville and this region remains deeply rooted.
CONNECTED
FOR YOU
With the hospital as a strong foundation, we’ve continued to evolve by adding cutting-edge technology and top-notch physicians. From the Memorial Care Center, Memorial Medical Group and The Orthopedic and Neurosciences Center, our network is connected to provide the patients we serve with seamless, high-quality care in all of our communities.
GROWING
TO SERVE
In 2016, we look forward to opening Memorial Hospital East in Shiloh, a state-of-the-art facility that will more than satisfy the healthcare needs of the communities we serve as well as provide easier access to our patients to the north and east. This is just one of many stages of growth for The Memorial Network as we look to the future of healthcare.

Whiteside School District #115
Whiteside School began circa 1850 as a one-room school house, just east of Belleville, on land donated by the Whiteside family. Whiteside students have continued the philanthropic endeavors initiated by the Whiteside family over 160 years ago, giving back to the community in which they live and extending that spirit of community far and wide. Recently, Whiteside students participated in activities to support the St. Louis Zoo, Belleville Area Humane Society, Special Olympics, and the annual UNICEF trick-or-treat campaign. Whiteside students and staff love to show off their favorite hats! Through hat days, students and staff pay $1 and don their favorite hat in support of Eden’s Army Foundation, Joshua’s Great Things Foundation, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation. Glee Club, Student Council, and National Junior Honor Society enjoy sharing time with the residents of St. Paul’s Home and The Fountains. Whiteside students are also grateful for the mentoring and support provided to them by community members. Several Whiteside students participate in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters school mentoring program and are paired with “Bigs” from Belleville East High School. Whiteside National Junior Honor Society members serve as mentors for younger students. For the past several summers, Whiteside School has partnered with area churches and community members to provide the Sacks of Summer (SOS) lunch program. SOS brings sack lunches to students throughout the summer and is supported by Belleville First Church, Cornerstone Christian, Faith Family, and Towerview Baptist, as well as several community business folks. This school year, 120 Whiteside students received new backpacks full of school supplies through the Chamber’s BackPack-to-School event. Whiteside offers a huge THANK YOU to all of the business and individuals who support the BackPack program!

Chuck Joley:
About TheBANK of Edwardsville’s Commercial Banking Group When I started my new law firm, I decided to start fresh with a new bank. I was looking for a more personal touch with a local bank, and wanted somebody that would help us operate our payroll and help us manage our accounts and cash flow. I got exactly what I was looking for with TheBANK of Edwardsville. The people there have been very accommodating, friendly and available to me 100 percent of the time. The level of personal attention and responsiveness I get with TheBANK isn’t exactly commonplace in today’s banking marketplace. Frankly, their people in the field have just been better than the competition. Once I saw how TheBANK worked with me on the business side of things, I decided to make them my exclusive bank for all my financial needs.

Powers, a highly successful banker and banking executive for the past 35 years, was unanimously approved by TheBANK of Edwardsville’s Board of Directors during its Feb. 18 meeting. “Speaking on behalf of our board of directors, I am pleased to announce that Kevin Powers has been selected as the 13th president and CEO of TheBANK of Edwardsville,” said Robert Plummer, chairman of TheBANK of Edwardsville’s Board of Directors. “We’re confident that Kevin will not only continue the dedication to our core values of tradition, innovation and community service, but will in fact build upon those beliefs which have made us the leading community bank in the region. His extensive background in banking, and the success he’s earned in every area of the industry, will make him a tremendous asset to TheBANK.” Powers, 59, and a native of Grand Forks, North Dakota, who helped build Bremer Financial Corp. into a regional power in Minnesota and North Dakota, said he’s excited about the opportunity to help lead TheBANK into the future. A graduate of the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Powers began his banking career in 1979 at First Bank (U.S. Bank) in Edina, Minn., where he worked his way up to business banking manager before accepting a position as senior vice president and business banking manager at Bremer Bank in Brainerd, Minn., in 1991. Powers has spent more than 20 of his 35 years in banking as a president at Bremer, and was an integral part in helping Bremer Financial grow to more than $9 billion in assets with over 100 locations throughout North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Powers replaces Tom Holloway, who will have served as president and CEO for 10 years before announcing his upcoming retirement. Under Holloway’s leadership, TheBANK grew from 14 to 18 locations while its assets have grown each year, rising from just over $1 billion in 2005 to nearly $1.7 billion today. Plummer also praised Holloway for his decade of dedicated service. “Tom has been a great leader and a tremendous asset, helping guide TheBANK of Edwardsville to stable and continuous earnings during the past 10 years,” he said. “He served TheBANK and the local communities with honor and distinction, and we wish him nothing but the best in his retirement.”

HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S WOUND CARE CENTER RECEIVES TOP PERFORMER RECOGNITION
HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Wound Care Center was recently recognized as one of five top performers, for the 2014 Diabetes Campaign by Healogics, Inc., in the Midwest region. The Diabetes Campaign encouraged each Healogics Wound Care Center to utilize community outreach to educate health care providers about chronic wounds caused by diabetes. St. Elizabeth’s Wound Care Center provided case studies and information about the causes of diabetic ulcers and treatments including Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Therapy during the campaign. The Center will celebrate their accomplishment with an all-staff gathering later this month and have a plaque in their office to showcase their dedication to the community. The effect of chronic wounds caused by diabetes is important for the Metro East residents to know since a large percentage of the community members are affected by diabetes. Although diabetes can ravage the body in many ways, non-healing ulcers on the feet and lower legs are common outward manifestations of the disease. As many as 25% of diabetic patients will eventually develop foot ulcers, and recurrence within five years is 70%. If not aggressively treated, these wounds can lead to amputations. Amputation often triggers a downward spiral of declining quality of life, frequently leading to disability and death. In fact, only about one third of diabetic amputees will live more than five years, a survival rate equivalent to that of many cancers. For more information about St. Elizabeth’s Wound Care Center visit steliz.org or call the Wound Care Center at 618-234-2120, extension 2742. A physician’s referral is not required for a consultation.

Chamber Member Update SWIC NAMED “TOP COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY” BY MILITARY ADVANCED EDUCATION
Southwestern Illinois College has been named a “Top College and University” by Military Advanced Education magazine. The MAE Guide provides information that prospective students need to evaluate institutions on their best practices in military and veteran education. Schools were selected based on criteria from six categories: Military Culture, Financial Assistance, Flexibility, General Support, Online Support and On Campus Support. “The very foundation of SWIC has been built around service to veterans,” said President Georgia Costello, Ph.D. “In 1946, our first students were returning WWII veterans. As we approach the 70th anniversary of the college, we are proud to say SWIC is still leading the pack in regards to service to veterans.” SWIC serves more than 1800 veterans and an additional 900 dependents – the largest population of any Illinois public college or university. This acknowledgment comes on the heels of being ranked ninth in the nation by Military Times magazine in their annual Best for Vets: Colleges 2015 2-year schools poll. The college, one of only 140 2-year, 4-year, online and nontraditional schools nationwide to be included, jumped up four spots in its category from last year’s ranking of 13th. In addition, SWIC was named a 2015 Military Friendly School® by Victory Media, the leading media group for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. SWIC was placed in the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to serve America’s military service members, veterans and dependents as students and to ensure their success on campus. Among many outstanding attributes, SWIC was recognized for its: New Veterans & Career Services center, VetSuccess on Campus counselor, Department of Veterans Affairs counselor on campus full time, Veteran New Student Orientation program, Annual Veteran Hiring Event For more information about veterans services offered at Southwestern Illinois College, call 618-235-2700, ext. 5226, or visit swic. edu/veterans.

SCOTT CREDIT UNION PARTNERS WITH HEART ASSOCIATION TO PROVIDE CPR KITS TO AREA SCHOOLS
Several area high schools are receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation kits to help students learn CPR thanks to a partnership between the American Heart Association and Scott Credit Union. Scott Credit Union signed on recently as a three-year sponsor of the heart association program to provide CPR kits to Triad, Collinsville, Mascoutah, Cahokia, Waterloo and Columbia high schools. The kits will help the high schools meet the new state mandate requiring that students know how to perform CPR and use a defibrillator. Scott Credit Union is contributing $35,000 to help fund the program, according to SCU Community Relations Supervisor Jennifer Hess. “This is a great way for us to support our local schools in providing the students with CPR training,” Hess said. “We are thankful to the American Heart Association for bringing us the opportunity to be involved.” The CPR kits that the schools are receiving include 10 inflatable mannequin torsos, the pumps to inflate them and instructional videos. “The mannequins are designed so they make a clicking sound when the student is performing the CPR correctly,” said Renee Ades of the American Heart Association. “It is really good practice for the students. They know when they are performing the CPR correctly.” Representatives from Scott Credit Union were on hand at several schools recently with Ades to present the kits to school administrators and students. “This is another opportunity for us to support our community and the people who live here,” Hess said. “It is our way of showing our support for our area schools.” For details on opening accounts at Scott Credit Union, visit www.scu.org, call 1-800-888-4728, or stop by any of the credit union’s branches.
