32nd Annual Chili Cook-off is a Tremendous Success

November 2015

It takes 365 days to plan and prepare for the Chamber’s biggest and most anticipated event of the year. This year’s festival was definitely one for the history books with its full line-up of music, great tasting chili, Jr. Idol competition and 5k run/ walk. This year, the community helped raise $2,500 through the People’s Choice Award for Best Chili. All of which went toward the Community Interfaith Food Pantry (an increase of nearly $1,200 from just one year ago!). Congratulations to all of this year’s participants. Here is a list of this year’s winners! Chili Cook-Off Non-Food Service: 1st Place: O’Fallon Sportsman Club 2nd Place: Emmanuel Freewill Baptist Church 3rd Place: Belleville/Swansea Moose Lodge 1221 Chili Cook-Off Food Service/Caterer: 1st Place: Callier’s The Big Ribowski 2nd Place: Main Street Brewing Company 4204 3rd Place: Fischer’s Restaurant People’s Choice Award: Peel Wood Fired Pizza & Brewery Jr. Idol Winners: Division 1 (Ages 10 -13): Connor Johnson Division 2 (Ages 14-17): Emily Knedel Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors. 2520 Mascoutah Avenue | Belleville, IL 62220 Phone: 618.416.6337 www.thesilvercreeksaloon.com Business After Hours on October 8th was certainly one of the most unusual we have ever had! Co-sponsored by the Chamber Healthcare Committee and Silver Creek Saloon and Grill, attendees were treated to delicious appetizers prepared by Silver Creek and a Chicken Bingo courtesy of Stella the Chicken. Beautiful weather allowed for a delightful time spent on the outdoor patio prior to the Chicken Bingo. If you are not familiar with Chicken Bingo think big chicken coup with a floor like a bingo card. Stella is placed in the coup and the winning number is determined by the random “deposit” she makes. Proceeds from the fun goes to the Healthcare Committee’s scholarships they award each year to area students seeking an education in a healthcare field. John Venarsky, TheBank of Edwardsville, was the lucky winner. John graciously donated his winnings back to the scholarship fund. Thank you, John! Thanks to the Healthcare Committee and Silver Creek Saloon and Grill for a fun-filled evening networking for a great cause. The Silver Creek Saloon & Grill provides good food, cold drinks, live music and recreational volleyball. Check their website for additional information at www.thesilvercreeksaloon.com. They are located on Mascoutah Avenue in Belleville, IL.

Stella, the chicken, is carefully placed in her specially made coup, as attendees anxiously await the Chicken Bingo.

The 2015-2016 school year has brought several exciting new things to Governor French Academy (GFA). We started a new school wide program: S. Team. S.Team is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. We will be focusing on project-based learning by integrating these subjects and connecting them with the student’s regular curriculum. By implementing S. Team into the individualized education that students are receiving at GFA, students are getting a greater differentiated curriculum. It is a way to meet the needs of diverse learners. S. Team also offers students a chance at real world applications, hands-on learning experiences, increased creativity and critical thinking skills, all the things a student will need in college. WALKING THE PATH OF FORGIVENESS AND MERCY

Saturday, November 14, 2015, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Ill., will present Walking the Path of Forgiveness and Mercy with Fr. Richard McAlear, OMI, on Saturday, November 14, 2015 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Shrine Visitor Center. Forgiveness is something that we all wrestle with – either forgiving ourselves or others, but it’s one of the tenets of our faith. God is rich in mercy and expects His people to be merciful and forgiving. Jesus taught more on forgiveness than he did on love, and even died so that sin might be forgiven. We see the merciful face of God through Jesus. Fr. McAlear will talk about forgiveness as the practical, real and tangible expression of love. He will end the day with a blessing for those who wish to be blessed. Join us on this special day of healing, love and mercy. Cost: $40.00 (lunch included) Visit us online at snows.org/programs.For more information or to register, contact the Shrine at 618-397-6700 ext. 6270.

rause, Pri ncipal, M etro East Lutheran TheBANK High Scho of Edward ol; and Lin sville’s Co ette Warn mmercial ecke, Vice Banking G President, roup.

Dr. Jay Krause:

About TheBANK of Edwardsville’s Commercial Banking Group There’s a long, successful history between TheBANK of Edwardsville and Metro East Lutheran High School, and I know for many like myself, it’s both a professional and personal relationship. I’ve met so many very good people – people like Linette Warnecke – who have worked hard to benefit my school and me. What I’m always impressed with is the level of personalized service I

receive … every time. I’m treated like a person and not just a representative of a big organization. It’s a refreshing way of doing business for myself, my school and our ministry. TheBANK is not only our banking partner, but an institution that is very well connected in the community. Those connections, along with their knowledge of our overall operations and the operations of our 12 supporting churches in the Metro East area, has been very important to us. TheBANK backs up its commitment to the community by what they do with our high school and our partners.

The bottom line is that I have no reservations about recommending TheBANK of Edwardsville – for both professional and personal banking needs – to anyone I meet.

Scheffel Boyle is pleased to announce they have been selected as a Captain of the Riverbend award winner from the Riverbend Growth Association (RBGA). Chamber Member Update MEMORIAL HOSPITAL NAMED TOP PEFORMER FOR HIP REPLACEMENT BY U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT

Memorial Hospital in Belleville has been rated high performing in Hip Replacement Surgery by U.S. News and World Report. The ratings evaluate more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide on a variety of common inpatient procedures and conditions. Only about 10 percent of those hospitals were rated as high performers. “This award certainly validates the commitment of our nurses and physicians to providing patients with exceptional healthcare and compassionate service,” said Mark J. Turner, Memorial Hospital president and CEO. “I am very proud of our team for this well-deserved achievement and want to thank them for their dedication to our patients.” “The choice of hospital is one of the most important and costly decisions an individual makes,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis for U.S. News. “We evaluated the treatment of more than 3.6 million patients and identified a small percentage of hospitals that have superior outcomes compared with their peer institutions. Whenever possible, patients, in consultation with their doctors, should seek out high performing hospitals that excel in treating their specific condition.” U.S. News created Best Hospitals for Common Care to help patients find better care for the kinds of common procedures and medical conditions that account for millions of hospitalizations each year. Objective outcome measures such as deaths, infections, readmissions, and operations that need to be repeated as well as patient satisfaction data largely determined the ratings. These ratings rely on Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data for patients 65 and older, as well as survey data from the American Hospital Association and clinical registry data from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

BEFORE I DIE PROJECT ON DISPLAY AT SWIC SCHMIDT ART CENTER PATIO

Stop by Southwestern Illinois College’s Schmidt Art Center patio on the Belleville Campus and tell the world as part of an exhibition opening Monday, Oct. 12. The center will host the project “Before I Die” from Monday, Oct. 12-Saturday, Dec. 4. Using chalk, visitors to the wall will complete lines that begin “Before I die I want to”. The interactive wall exhibition is the brainchild of artist Candy Chang. After losing someone she loved and experiencing deep depression, she created the first wall on an abandoned house in her neighborhood to create an anonymous place to help restore perspective and share intimately while remaining an introvert. The art piece encouraged anyone to walk up, pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives and share their personal aspirations in this public space. Since that first board went up in New Orleans, La., more than 1,000 walls in more than 35 languages and more than 70 countries have appeared. A book by the same name also celebrates these walls and the stories behind them. When the exhibition closes, it will be moved to a permanent installation site, the Death Café – hosted at the Miscellana House Café, 1111 W. Main St. in Belleville. For more information, contact Curator Nicole Dutton at 618-235-2700, ext. 5143 or 618-222-5ART (5278).

CITY OF WILDWOOD OPENS NATURAL PARK AREA DESIGNED BY OATES ASSOCIATES

The City of Wildwood, MO, has opened The Grove, the first phase of its new 66-acre Wildwood Community Park in west St. Louis County on State Route 100, just west of State Route 109. Designed by Oates Associates, The Grove is a seven-acre “natural play” area that blends modern amenities with natural elements. Construction began in 2014 and was completed in late August, 2015. Oates Associates developed the master plan for Wildwood’s Community Park in 2010, from input obtained from residents, and provided architectural, civil engineering, structural engineering, survey and construction phase services for The Grove. They designed the area as an active play space balanced with more passive amenities that allow visitors to reflect upon the natural environment. The Grove includes Parkway Drive and parking areas, bioswales, trails, an exercise area, a pavilion, picnic areas, gardens, a creek crossing and an all-inclusive natural playground. A dog park, located in a woodland area, offers canine agility elements. Natural play space is intentionally designed to integrate natural components into a place for structured and unstructured play and learning, according to Cissell. Wildwood hired Oates Associates in 2010 to create a conceptual plan for the park based on a public participation process, which showed that residents preferred trails, sledding hills, natural playgrounds and open play lawn areas over manufactured play systems and sports facilities, which are available in other local parks. The city will continue to develop the Wildwood Community Park in phases over the next five to ten years as funding becomes available.
