COVER STORY More than 40 vendors prepare chili dishes for annual Chili Cook-off After modifying last year’s event, thousands of locals are gearing up for the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce’s 37th annual Chili Cook-Off, sponsored by Bud Light and Serra Honda O’Fallon, in Downtown Belleville on October 8 & 9 from 11:00am to 10:30pm both days. What began with just a few vendors on one block of East Main Street in downtown Belleville is now one of Belleville’s largest events celebrating the culinary creations from over 40 vendors, representing individuals, local organizations and area businesses. Many come to enjoy the great chili, entertainment and other festivities, but most don’t realize that the Chili Cook-off is the biggest fundraiser of the year for many non-profit or¬ganizations that take part, including the host, the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce. Many of the ven¬dors participating at the Chili Cook-off each year are either a non-profit organization or a business raising money for a charity. 100% of the money visitors spend at each booth goes to that vendor. In addition, attendees are invited to vote in the People’s Choice contest for their favorite chili with $1 per vote. 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Community Interfaith Food Pantry in Belleville. Vendors submit their chili to be judged by local culinary experts on Friday afternoon, sponsored by 1-800-BoardUp, and the winners are announced live on the Main Stage at 5pm on Saturday. Visitors can enjoy live entertainment throughout the weekend featuring performances on Friday by Fanfare at noon and Top of the World at 6:00pm, sponsored by Cardinal Buick GMC. The lineup on Saturday includes Rachel Daschaine taking the stage at noon, the USAF Band of Mid-America - Starlifter at 3:00pm, and the festival wraps up with Social Remedy at 6:00pm. The weekend will also include the 7th Annual Chili Chase 5k Run/Walk and Kids Pepper Dash Saturday morning, October 12 at 9:00am. It is a family-friendly race and all are welcome to attend. It is $25 to register, and you can do this up to race day. Please join us for the highly anticipated 37th annual Chili Cook-Off! For more information about vendors, menus, full entertainment schedule or to register for the Chili Chase 5k and to see all of our sponsors, please visit www.bellevillechili.com or get live updates by following us on Facebook @BellevilleChiliCookoff.

MEMBER UPDATES Greensfelder Law Firm Ranks Among Region’s “Healthiest Employers” Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C. was recently ranked as one of the Top 3 Healthiest Medium-Sized St. Louis Employers, as determined by the St. Louis Business Journal’s “Healthiest Employers 2021 List.” The Business Journal defines medium-sized employers as having between 100 and 499 employees. A total of 28 finalists competed with Greensfelder, the only law firm to make the list of profiled companies in the special section honoring the winners. Greensfelder’s comprehensive Well-Being Program and mental health resources provided flexibility and support to employees during the pandemic. Resources benefiting employees have included in-office yoga classes, meditation sessions, health and wellness educational programming, and firmwide fitness challenges. Launched in 2019, the program is led by Human Resources Manager Jessie Fenton, with support from firm management and an advisory committee.
HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital earns national recognition for efforts to improve cardiovascular treatment HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital has received two American Heart Association Achievement Awards for implementing quality improvement measures that ensure cardiovascular patients receive efficient and coordinated care, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer returns to the hospital. Nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have experienced some form of cardiovascular disease – including heart attack, stroke and heart failure. For patients with conditions that are severe enough to be transported or admitted to a hospital, time is critical. The American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline and Get With The Guidelines programs help reduce barriers to prompt treatment for cardiovascular events. As a participant in Mission: Lifeline: Get With The Guidelines programs, St. Elizabeth’s applied for the award recognitions by demonstrating how their organization has committed to improving quality care for patients. “St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association for our dedication to helping our patients have the best possible chance of survival and recovery after cardiovascular events,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Patti Fischer. “The Mission: Lifeline and Get with the Guidelines programs help put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis to improve outcomes for cardiovascular patients.” HSHS St. Elizabeth’s recently added two neurologists to the medical staff to further manage the care needs of stroke patients. This year, St. Elizabeth’s received the following Achievement Awards: • Get With The Guidelines Stroke Award (AHA) Gold Plus • Get With The Guidelines Stroke Award (AHA) Target Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll “We are pleased to recognize HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for their commitment to cardiovascular care,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., national chairperson of the American Heart Association’s Quality Oversight Committee and Executive Vice Chair of Neurology, Director of Acute Stroke Services, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. “Research has shown that hospitals adhering to clinical measures through the American Heart Association’s quality improvement programs often see fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates.”

MEMBER UPDATES Do you know the ABCs of Safe Sleep for Babies? Unsafe sleep is a leading cause of death for children one year old and younger. These deaths often happen during sleep or in the baby’s sleep area. Sudden unexpected deaths include sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), accidental suffocation in a sleeping environment and other deaths from unknown causes. During SIDS awareness month in October, colleagues from HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Women and Infants Center want to educate parents in the metro-east to ensure safe sleep for infants. “Every mom who delivers at St. Elizabeth’s Women and Infants Center is educated about the risk factors associated with infant mortality; and we work both within the hospital and with community partners to increase this important education. Together, we provide needed resources for our mothers and families in to continue to improve outcomes and keep babies safe,” said Amanda Schaefer, MSN, RN, interim nurse manager of St. Elizabeth’s Women and Infants Center. St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is also recognized by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program, created by Cribs for Kids, as a Bronze Safe Sleep Hospital. The hospital additionally provides a safe sleep swaddler for every delivered baby thanks to a grant from HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation. What are the ABCs of Safe Sleep? Shaefer shared, “The answer is Alone, on their Backs, in a Safe Crib.” • Babies should always sleep alone. If moms are breastfeeding, soothe the baby back to sleep while standing and return to crib when they are asleep. • Always place babies on their back to sleep. • A baby should sleep in a crib with a firm mattress covered by a tightly fitted sheet. Babies can die while sleeping in adult beds, couches, pillows, blankets and other soft surfaces as well as in car seats, bouncy seats and infant swings. It is also important to keep stuffed animals, crib bumpers and other items out of the crib. Parents, grandparents, babysitters and anyone else involved with the care of an infant are encouraged to be educated on the risks and safe sleep habits by visiting https://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/sids/conditioninfo/reduce.

MEMBER UPDATES McKendree is Among Best Colleges for Student Voting in 2021 The Washington Monthly has named McKendree University to its “Best Colleges for Student Voting 2021” list. This is the second year in a row that McKendree has been named to the list. A total of 205 schools made the sixth student voting honor roll list this year, 47 more than in 2020. According to the Washington Monthly, “for the first time since the U.S. let 18-year-olds vote, more than half of all 18- to 24-year-olds cast ballots. The 51.4 percent of young people who voted blows the 2016 mark – 39.4 percent – out of the water. In fact, the increase in youth voting is one of the most striking shifts among any demographic.” The Washington Monthly used information from the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge and information from the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) to compile its sixth student voting honor roll. The nonpartisan ALL IN works with institutions to develop school-specific student voting action plans. NSLVE, based at Tufts University, objectively examines student and institution-level data on student voting, calculates registration numbers and turnout rates, and shares the data with participating schools to track their progress. To make the honor roll, schools must meet multiple criteria, which include submitting an ALL IN action plan in 2018 and 2020, signing up to receive NSLVE data about their campus voter registration and turnout rates, and making their 2016 and 2018 NSLVE data available to the public. Founded in 1828, McKendree University’s historic Lebanon, Ill., campus is 25 miles from St. Louis, Mo. McKendree also has a center in Radcliff, Ky., and offers degree programs online and at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. It is one of U.S. News’ “Best Regional Universities,” “Best Value Schools” and “Best Colleges for Veterans” in the Midwest. www.mckendree.edu.

MEMBER UPDATES Fruits and vegetables produced in Illinois help keep the body and brain healthy Harvest season in Illinois is right around the corner, and HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital wants you to reap the health benefits of locally produced fruits and vegetables. Summer and fall foods like corn, tomatoes and apples can help your health from head to toe. According to nutrition experts at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s, corn is high in fiber which aids in digestion and tomatoes are a good source of antioxidants which may reduce the risk of heart disease. Leafy greens like spinach and broccoli add important nutrients to grow healthy hair, fingernails and toenails. Illinois is one of the leading states in the U.S. for pumpkin production. This fruit is low in calories and a great source of vitamin A and potassium, which can protect your skin from sun damage and lower your risk of cancer and eye disease. Health benefits of summer harvest: • Apples provide necessary soluble fiber which helps lower your cholesterol level, your risk of diabetes, and your risk of developing asthma. Tip: leave the skin on because it contains half the fiber of the apple. • Beets have been linked to significant improvement in blood flow and lower blood pressure if eaten consistently. • Corn provides valuable B vitamins such as folate, which is important during pregnancy. • Garlic is known to boost the immune system to reduce symptoms and duration of the common cold. It also contains antioxidants that may help prevent dementia. • Yellow Squash is low in calories and contains no cholesterol, fat and sodium. Tip: do not peel the skin – that’s where most of the nutrients are stored. • Zucchini helps keep thyroid hormone levels stable and, thanks to its vitamin C, it can strengthen vision. It’s also versatile; it can be grilled, roasted, braised, pickled, baked, or eaten raw. The University of Illinois Extension Service is a great resource for nutrition and wellness information. MEMBER UPDATES U.S. News & World Report names Memorial as High Performing Memorial Hospital has been recognized as a High Performing Hospital for 2021-22 by U.S. News & World Report. The Belleville campus was named High Performing in three Common Procedures and Conditions: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Heart Failure and Kidney Failure, while the Shiloh campus was named High Performing in hip fractures. The annual Procedures and Conditions ratings, now in their seventh year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for common conditions and elective procedures. These ratings extend the U.S. News mission of providing consumers with patient decision support beyond the Best Hospitals rankings, which are geared toward complex specialty care. Memorial’s “High Performing” ratings for COPD, Heart Failure, Kidney Failure and Hip Fractures recognize care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes. “High Performing” is the highest rating U.S. News awards for those types of care. For the 2021-22 ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 17 procedures and conditions. Fewer than a third of all hospitals received any high-performing rating, and only 11 earned this rating in all procedures and conditions. The state and metro area rankings recognize hospitals that received high performing ratings across multiple areas of care.

McKendree University Announces Tuition Initiative for Southern Illinois Counties Are you a senior who is feeling lonely, or are you a caregiver to a senior and in need of a little break? Senior Companions can help! The Senior Companion Program pairs healthy, active people 55 and older with other seniors who otherwise would not be able to live independently. Southwestern Illinois College Programs and Services for Older Persons sponsors the program. “The companions provide supportive, individualized services to help clients maintain their dignity and independence,” said Carla Boswell, director of the Senior Companion Program at PSOP. “The goal is to foster their independence and keep them in their own homes. MEMBER UPDATES Holland Construction Services Completes Eleven South Office Building II Holland Construction Services has completed work on the Eleven South Office Building II in Monroe County, Illinois. The three-story office building stands as the second of several planned buildings on a 26-acre site developed by Admiral Parkway Inc. “I think Holland did an excellent job on this development,” said Admiral Parkway Inc. President Joe Koppeis. “They have a lot of depth on their bench in regard to the level of experience on their team. It was a complicated project because of the amount of coordination involved between the city and IDOT, as well as several other entities, and they did an outstanding job managing everything and completing the project on time.” The three-story office building, which is just under 40,000 square feet, is located 11 miles south of the Gateway Arch in Columbia, Illinois. It features open office spaces, executive spaces, a large training room and several conference rooms as well as a 1,000-square-foot outdoor observation deck and patio overlooking the Columbia Bluffs and Jefferson Barracks Bridge. “Being brought on to the project in the early stages was very helpful because it gave our team the ability to lead and coordinate the overall design efforts with the owner, tenant, architect and project engineers,” said Holland Senior Project Manager Tim Simon. “Because this project is near the Mississippi River Bottoms, we had to navigate around stronger than normal wind loads and sandy soil conditions that required more structural reinforcements. We are very satisfied with the end result and it’s gratifying knowing how many jobs this building has brought to the area.” Eleven South Building II serves as headquarters for Intertel, a medical canvassing firm that finds and verifies medical treatment information for claims, and is responsible for bringing nearly 200 jobs to the region. Koppeis said he has additional plans for more development in the area, including a restaurant site, which he hopes to break ground on within 90 days, as well as a hotel and two more office buildings. Quadrant Design served as the architect on the Eleven South Building II project and Kreher Engineering was the structural engineer.
Newly-Established Bogey’s Career Closet Helps Students Prepare for Success McKendree University is proud to announce the recent opening of Bogey’s Career Closet, a program established by the University’s Career Services and the School of Business that allows currently enrolled McKendree students to select business attire donated by faculty, staff, students, alumni and community residents. The name derives from the school’s mascot, Bogey the Bearcat, and is slated to open Friday, Oct. 1. The goal of Bogey’s Career Closet is to help students prepare for success by providing them with business attire to use for networking events, career fairs, interviews and other professional events. These items are new or gently used, up to date and brought in laundered or dry cleaned for students in need to use. “Research shows that it only takes a few seconds for someone to form an impression of an individual and decide if they could be a good fit for their organization, even before they have the opportunity to speak,” said Jennifer Pickerell, director of Career Services. “It is for this reason that we opened Bogey’s Career Closet – to provide students with the attire that they need to help them look and feel their best as they enter the next stage in their lives.” Bogey’s Career Closet is open by appointment only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays. To schedule an appointment, students will need to email Career Services at careerservices@mckendree.edu and bring their student ID with them at their allotted time. Additionally, Bogey’s Career Closet operates through donations and will accept new or gently used items including suits for men and women, dress shirts and blouses, dress pants, contemporary suit jackets or blazers, skirts, closed-toed dress shoes, ties, belts, portfolios and other accessories. Members of the University or community can bring these items to the Career Services office in Clark Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.
