MEMBER UPDATES Give Blood, Save Lives and Receive a T-shirt, October 8 Type O Blood Donations Urgently Needed HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, in conjunction with Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center (MVRBC), is hosting a blood drive Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Anyone attending the drive should park near the hospital’s Outpatient entrance and enter the building using the Outpatient entrance, which is noted with a blue “Outpatient” sign. Additional directional signs will be posted to lead guests to the conference room, located on the fourth floor. All presenting donors will receive a voucher for their choice of a state-themed Donor T-shirt. “Due to a decrease in donations after Labor Day and a spike in patient need, we are urging all eligible volunteer donors, especially Type O (Rh-positive or Rh-negative), to donate,” said Amanda Hess, Director of Donor and Public Relations at MVRBC. Type O negative red blood cells can be transfused to patients of every blood type and are most often used in emergencies – when the components must be transfused before the patient’s blood type is known. Newborns, infants, and those with compromised immune systems also frequently receive O-negative red cells. To schedule a donation time call MVRBC at 866-GIVE-BLD (866-448-3253) or log on to www.bloodcenterimpact.org and use Sponsor Code: 10155. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are suggested. A photo ID is required to participate and it is encouraged that all donors get a good night’s sleep and eat a sustaining meal and hydrate well before donating. A blood donor can give every eight weeks, or up to six times a year. All person’s age 17 and up (or 16 with a signed parental permission form) who weigh at least 110 lbs. and are in general good health meet the basic eligibility requirements for blood donation. A full list of donor eligibility guidelines may be found at http://www.bloodcenter.org/donate-blood/donating-blood/ donor-eligibility.aspx.
FALL RETREAT SPONSORED BY THE VICTORIOUS MISSIONARIES The Victorious Missionaries, a group that offers spiritual support for people with disabilities, is sponsoring a FALL RETREAT at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows Visitors Center, in Belleville, Ill. The weekend begins with dinner at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 18 and ends with lunch on Sunday, October 20. St. Eugene De Mazenod, the founder of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, gave this task to those who would join his community of priests and brothers: “ We must lead (people) to act like human beings, first of all, and then like Christians, and, finally, we must help them to become saints.” During this retreat, we’ll presuppose the “human being” part. But to help us be better Christians and even saints, we’ll consider questions like these: Who is God for me? Who is Jesus Christ for me? How can I take up my cross to follow him? And how can I be a saint? Our retreat leader Fr. Jim Allen, OMI is completing his 60th year as a Missionary Oblatee of Mary Immaculate. During those years, he has been an educator, a parish pastor, the Director of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, on the road preaching parish missions and retreats and working at the Oblate General Headquarters in Rome, Italy. Currently, he lives with his “senior” brother Oblates in Belleville, but on most Sundays, he celebrates Mass with a beautiful little community of young, Spanish-speaking migrants living in nearby Clinton County. He’s also written a book, Peanut Butter Cookie Lover and other Musings of a Middleaged Catholic Priest, but so far no one wants to publish it. (Maybe the title is too long.) Cost for the weekend is $175, which includes six meals, two nights lodging, snacks and handouts. If you choose to commute, the cost is $115. The cost for both Saturday and Sunday is $100; for Saturday only is $70 (includes lunch and dinner). Pre-registration is required. The Victorious Missionaries has been a ministry of the Missionary Oblates since its founding in 1964. To learn more or to register for this program, call the VM National Office at 618-394-6281. (Voice and TTY). A printable registration form is available online at www.vmusa.org.

MEMBER UPDATES HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Honors Colleagues with National DAISY Award and Hospital BEE Award HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital recently awarded Philip Gray, RN with the national DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Gray, of Trenton, Illinois, has served as a registered nurse in St. Elizabeth’s emergency department for two years. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s nationwide program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The nomination was submitted by a patient who believes Philip’s quick action in triage, during a STEMI heart attack saved his life. The nomination shared, “As the ‘gatekeeper’ Philip made the right call at a key time and set the rest of the night in motion. He could have had me sit in the waiting room, but he didn’t. I remember him saying something like: it’s not typical, but something just doesn’t seem right. I can’t recall all the names of the people we saw that night, and who cared for me in the process—there were so many! HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital recently awarded Philip Gray, When all was said and done, the number of names we RN (right) with the national DAISY Award for Extraordinary could remember was over 30—in less than 24 hours— Nurses and Velvetee Dillard, CNA (left) with St. Elizabeth’s BEE that’s incredible! The care provided at every step was Award. Both were acknowledged for delivering the difference in exceptional! Thanks to our Good Lord for his provisions excellent patient care. at St. Elizabeth’s through your wonderful staff, I will hopefully have many more healthy years. Thank you, Philip, for making the decision that so positively influenced the remainder of my life.” “I greatly appreciate the positive feedback and the recognition of the national DAISY Award,” Gray said. “Just as much, it’s great to receive a note from a former patient. As an ER nurse, we often don’t hear what a patient’s outcome is after they leave our care, so it is excellent to hear this patient has had a positive outcome and is doing so well.” Additionally, just as a daisy cannot survive without a bee, nurses cannot survive without the outstanding teamwork provided by support colleagues. As such, Velvetee Dillard, CNA from the Telemetry B unit, recently received St. Elizabeth’s Being Extraordinary Everyday (BEE) Award. Dillard, of Collinsville, was nominated by a fellow colleague who shared, “Velvetee went above and beyond in helping prepare and calm an uneasy patient before a cardiac cath procedure. When the patient asked Velvetee to pray for the her, Velvetee immediately got down on the patient’s level and said a prayer, which helped calm the patient. She also helped ease the family’s nerves. She is a wonderful CNA and very deserving of this BEE Award.” “It’s exciting to be recognized,” shared Dillard, who has worked at St. Elizabeth’s for four months. “I love helping our patients every day and making a positive difference in their lives.” Distribution of the nationally-recognized DAISY Award and the BEE Award at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital have been made possible through funds provided by HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation. Nominations for future DAISY and BEE Awards at St. Elizabeth’s continue to be accepted. Patients and visitors are encouraged to share and submit their story of witnessing excellent and compassionate care from staff. The nomination forms can be downloaded at https://www.steliz.org/Patient-Guest/Recognize-a-Colleague. MEMBER UPDATES how Does Chiropractic Help with Headaches? Since 9 out of 10 Americans suffer from some form of headache, we tend to think of them as just a nuisance that can be relieved by taking a painkiller or a nap. Those solutions sometimes lighten the pain momentarily, but recurring headaches are a symptom that something else is wrong, and finding the root cause of your headaches is imperative to putting an end to them. Fortunately, there’s a proven alternative. According to a new study, chiropractic treatment can provide “immediate relief” for many headache patients. The majority of primary headaches, including tension headaches and migraines, are frequently associated with muscle tension or joint restrictions in the neck. These problems occur more often than ever before because nowadays we’re sitting in front of the computer for hours at a time or looking down at a phone to surf the web or text. Chiropractors work to remove the triggers of these painful problems like stiffness, tightness, inflammation, and nerve irritation in the cervical spine. In addition to performing gentle spinal manipulation and soft tissue release, I can also provide nutritional advice to help you avoid common migraine triggers found in your diet. Many patients also benefit from chiropractic advice on posture, relaxation techniques, and exercises to help prevent future problems. So, if you or someone you know suffers from headache, call our office today. And check out this short video for more information about relief for neck-related headaches. Call Dr. Ben Brown at 618-744-7314 to schedule, or go to https://brown-chiro.com/request-an-appointment/ to schedule online.
