HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL AMONG NATION’S TOP PERFORMING HOSPITALS FOR TREATMENT OF HEART ATTACK PATIENTS Prairie Heart and Vascular Institute at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2019. St. Elizabeth’s is one of only 86 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that St. Elizabeth’s has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations. To receive the Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Silver Performance Achievement Award, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital has demonstrated sustained achievement in the Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry for four consecutive quarters and has performed at the top level of standards for specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients. “As a Silver Performance Award recipient, Prairie Heart and Vascular Center at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital has established itself as a leader in setting the national standard for improving quality of care in patients with acute myocardial infarction,” said Michael C. Kontos, MD, FACC, chair of the NCDR Chest Pain – MI Registry Steering Subcommittee, Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. “By meeting the award requirements set forth in the registry, St. Elizabeth’s has demonstrated a commitment to providing reliable, comprehensive treatment for heart attack patients based on current clinical guideline recommendations.” The Center for Disease Control estimates that over 700,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others. “Our interdisciplinary team of cardiovascular professionals, Prairie Heart physicians and EMS partners are dedicated to providing excellent care for our heart attack patients” said Bonnie Schnieder, MS, RT, cardiovascular services director. “We are pleased to be recognized for our dedication and achievements in cardiac care by both of these nationally known organizations.” Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients. MEMBER UPDATES EXPLORE CERAMICS AND POP CULTURE PIECES AT THE SCHMIDT ART Starting in August, three solo exhibitions at the William and Florence Schmidt Art Center will offer art lovers varying views of American culture through ceramics, a large-scale installation, and drawings and prints. Artists Nanette Boileau, Todd May and Daniel Stumeier’s exhibits will be displayed now through Oct. 10 at The Schmidt. An opening reception will be held from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22 and artist talks at 6 p.m. at the art center on the Southwestern Illinois College Belleville Campus, 2500 Carlyle Ave. The exhibits offer viewers a chance to reflect on the timeless exploration of wheel-thrown ceramic forms using natural gas reduction; investigate a large-scale installation about varied and non-conformist paths of Americans fighting for their dreams; and view drawings and prints that examine Midwest American popular culture in light of current attitudes toward race and class. “These exhibits give us a chance to discuss current events within our society and culture,” said Schmidt Curator Nicole Dutton. “As well as, reflect on the past and hopes for the future.” For more information about these exhibitions, The Schmidt, the art center’s calendar of events and arts education programs, visit swic.edu/theschmidt or call 618-222-5ART (5278).
HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL REMINDS COMMUNITY THAT IMMUNIZATIONS ARE IMPORTANT FOR ALL AGES is observed as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, HSHS Medical Group and health groups nationwide recognize the importance of proper immunizations, or vaccinations, for citizens of all ages, and encourage the public to make sure their immunizations are up-to-date to help prevent serious, sometimes fatal diseases. HSHS Medical Group pediatricians Guy Venuti, MD and Kate Wade, MD regularly discuss the need and importance of immunizations with their patients. Dr. Venuti said, “Often immunizations are primarily thought of for babies or young children, but they should be more accurately viewed as focusing on different stages of life: babies and young children, preteen/teen, pregnant women and adults.” Vaccination needs should be assessed by an individual’s doctor, pharmacist or other health care provider. “It is important to note that vaccination not only protects the person receiving the vaccine, but it also helps prevent the spread of disease to those who are particularly most vulnerable to serious illnesses mainly infants, young children, the elderly and those with chronic conditions and weakened immune systems,” shared Dr. Wade. NIAM was established to encourage people of all ages to make sure they are up to date on the vaccines recommended for them. Certain vaccinations are recommended based on a person’s age, occupation, hobby or health condition(s). Limited examples include: • Babies receive vaccinations that help protect them from 14 diseases by age two. It is very important that babies receive all doses of each vaccine and receive each vaccination on time. • Children returning to school – either primary, secondary or college – should be vaccinated accordingly to protect from infectious diseases such as meningitis. • Preteens and teens require the Tdap vaccine to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough – among other immunizations. • It is recommended that pregnant women receive a flu and Tdap vaccine to remain as healthy as possible during the pregnancy. • Adults should receive a tetanus and diphtheria booster vaccine every 10 years. • Adults 60 years and older are recommended to receive the shingles vaccine, and some adults 65 and older are recommended to receive one or more pneumococcal vaccines. • The flu vaccine is recommended for (all people aged 6 months or older) on a yearly basis. To learn more about National Immunization Awareness Month, visit https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/events/niam.html. HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is part of the Southern Illinois Division of Hospital Sisters Health System, which also includes HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, HSHS Holy Family Hospital in Greenville and HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.
