Good Morning, [~FirstName~], The grand opening of the expanded Panama Canal on June 26, 2016 has signaled a substantial shift in global logistics as shippers consider new routes to new ports and new markets. The new locks at the Panama Canal offer Neo and Post Panamax size ships carrying almost double the number of containers a wider pathway through the 48mile canal. The traditional route for Asian shippers has customarily been to ship their goods to West Coast ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles and up the coast to Vancouver, where the containers are placed on railroad cars and carried the long miles to the Midwest, East Coast and southern distribution centers. By sending their ships through the Panama Canal, they can save up to 5 days in travel time and save on shipping costs by sending their ships to East Coast ports such as Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington, Norfolk, etc. This video gives you the facts in about two minutes. Logistics experts have begun to reconsider their supply chain networks to analyze how they might save money and time from manufacturing to shipping to distribution centers to their retail outlets. Charlotte stands to gain from this expansion of the Panama Canal because of its location at the midpoint along the East Coast...halfway between New York City and Miami. With Charlotte Douglas Airport and the NS and CSX Intermodal Centers, Charlotte has unique access to five major ports...Wilmington, Charleston, Savannah, Norfolk and Jacksonville. Charlotte can become a major logistics and distribution center. All these factors contribute to the vision of Charlotte becoming a "global hub for international commerce."

Both raw materials, parts, supplies and finished goods can travel into and out of the Carolinas to global locations. The flow of global shipping traffic operates 24/7 around the world delivering goods to local markets. The individual dots of light indicate individual ships moving around the globe.
