If you have more than one cat or dog, why not take advantage of spreading the payments out between now and 9 April? The law requires all owners to register cats and dogs aged over three months with their local Council. If you register your dog or cat after the 9 April deadline, you may risk a fine. Cr Loi Truong

► Lightwood Ward space for pedestrians, improved street lighting, new seating, public art and more trees. The other big Springvale project is the Springvale Community Precinct at the site of the old Council offices at 397–405 Springvale Road.

Springvale is undergoing a major transformation, and the central shopping district will experience some obvious changes over the coming months. The first stage of the Springvale Boulevard Project will see Springvale Road start to transform into a signature boulevard, and will reinforce the activity centre as one of Melbourne’s leading cultural destinations. The streetscape design was developed following extensive consultation with locals and will feature more footpath

► Red Gum Ward Taking a stand on gambling harm: Over $3 billion has been lost to pokies in Greater Dandenong since they were introduced by the State Government over 20 years ago. This is equivalent to $60,000 per Greater Dandenong household, and the impacts include family violence, crime, unemployment and homelessness. Because of this I am glad my fellow councillors joined me in supporting a strong advocacy campaign leading up to the State Election in November this year. We are calling for: ► Changes

to the design of pokies to make them less deceptive and addictive

► $1

maximum bets and a maximum loss limit of $120 per hour

► A

reduction in the amount of pokies allowed in Greater Dandenong

► A

more effective role for councils and local communities in deciding gambling applications.

Recently the Springvale and District Historical Society temporarily relocated to 11 Morwell Parade, Springvale, in anticipation of the building works starting later this year. Designs for the new library and community hub have been completed and work is due to start on the new building later this year. The project is expected to be completed during 2020. I am looking forward to seeing this project completed, but in the meantime you can see the designs and concepts for the project on Council’s website. Visit greaterdandenong.com/ springvaleprecinct to see images and read more.

In Noble Park works are continuing on the removal of the level crossings at Heatherton, Chandler and Corrigan roads. You can see the above ground train lines really starting to take shape. Some overnight closures of the roads around all three crossings last month helped crews carry out important works without traffic slowing them down, but as things progress I ask that you all be patient with the road work crews. This project is expected to be completed this year and will make a huge impact on traffic through Noble Park. Visit levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/crossings for more information. If you have anything you would like to discuss with me I am happy to listen. You can contact me via email at loi.truong@cgd.vic.gov.au or phone me on 0466 004 618.

Cr Matthew Kirwan I hope you can join me in attending a gambling reform forum on 21 February at the Dandenong Civic Centre from 6pm–7.30pm. Maternal and Child Health resourcing challenges: In Greater Dandenong responding to the demand for our maternal and child health services (MCH) is extremely challenging. Our city has high levels of cultural diversity and social disadvantage. In recent times we have also experienced surges in demand for families experiencing family violence and mental health issues. While the Victorian Government has injected a significant amount of additional funding in the past 12 months we are still finding that funding does not always meet demand. As a result of this I have kicked off an advocacy campaign for more Maternal and Child Health funding that has more flexibility to respond to the complex and different needs of families across our city.

Improving pedestrian safety in Menzies Avenue, Dandenong North: Pedestrian safety is one of my key concerns, so when members of the former Lyndale Community Reference Group told me they were worried about crossing Menzies Avenue between the reserve and the shops I made it a priority. It took a while, but I have had great feedback about the raised pedestrian crossing installed there. If you have any ideas or concerns please contact me anytime via email matthew. kirwan@cgd.vic.gov.au or phone 0403 072 295.

Working for You

Future of Parks Last month we asked residents to tell us about their ideas for the future of parks across Greater Dandenong.

This month we will carry out face to face surveys with users of four local parks, in a bid to create clear plans for their future development. The information collected during these sessions will help us form Master Plans which will outline the long-term management and development of the parks, including open space areas, sporting facilities and playgrounds.

Face to face consultation sessions will be held onsite at: ► Burden

Park, Heatherton Road, Springvale South, on Saturday 17 February, from 9am–12pm

► Parkfield

Reserve, Ellendale Road, Noble Park, on Saturday 17 February, from 1pm–4pm

► Warner

Reserve, Furnew Street, Springvale, on Saturday 24 February, from 9am–12pm

► Frederick

Wachter Reserve, Kingsclere Aveune, Keysborough, on Saturday 24 February, from 1pm–4pm

If you can’t make it to the face to face sessions you can still have your say online. Visit greaterdandenong.com/ futureofparks or email futureofparks@cgd.vic.gov.au to share your ideas for the future of these parks and reserves.

Libraries for diverse communities Greater Dandenong Libraries is undertaking a Multilingual Libraries Project in conjunction with Monash University.

The project will look at the borrowing habits across our multilingual resources, and will help our libraries consider how they deliver services to Greater Dandenong’s culturally diverse community. Community participation will be encouraged, so keep an eye out at your local library to find out how you can take part in this project.

Keeping safe around schools Children are now back in the classroom, and now is a good time to make sure you familiarise yourself with the parking and speed restrictions around local schools.

These are all designed to keep our kids safe while making their way to and from school. Start and finish times can be very busy with pedestrians and cars. Sometimes arriving a few minutes earlier or parking a couple of blocks away and walking to school can ease the congestion, be less stressful and increase safety around schools during these busy times. While you’re there, stop and say hello to our friendly crossing supervisors, many of whom have been keeping more than one generation of our kids safe.

What’s on at The Drum Drum Theatre has always attracted some of the biggest names in showbiz, and the 2018 season will be no exception.

Next month the worldrenowned ventriloquist David Strassman will bring his quirky cast of characters to Dandenong for two performances of his all new show.

Gambling forum Council will host a forum for the wider community to come along and hear about the impact of gambling on our community, and how we can all be part of the solution. Special guest speaker will be the Reverend Tim Costello, a commentator and advocate for gambling reform. The forum will be held at the Dandenong Civic Centre, 225 Lonsdale Street, on Wednesday 21 February, from 6pm7.30pm, and everybody is welcome to attend.

www.greaterdandenong.com

Featuring classic characters Chuck and Ted E, Strassman has created this hilarious all-new show where he will delight audiences by throwing his voice to five puppets all at once. But the comedy is for mature audiences, with the show rated MA. Strassman’s iTedE will perform two shows on Saturday 3 March, at 7pm and 9.15pm. Tickets start at $49.90. In May two of Australia’s most famous showbiz names will join forces for Bosom Buddies. Nancye Hayes and Todd McKenney will hit the stage for a night of reminiscing.

Through song, dance and hilarious stories, you will hear about the highs and lows, the backstage stories never before told and see video footage that has never been seen before. Bosom Buddies will play on Thursday 17 May, at 8pm. Tickets start at $59. Visit drumtheatre.com.au to book tickets or to see what else is playing at Dandenong’s iconic Drum Theatre in 2018.

Recyc ling in Greate r Da nden ong Council is encouraging residents to take advantage of the return of the Pop-up Drive Thru Recycling Day this month. Take advantage of the event and dispose of everything from bicycles and mattresses, to prams, electronic goods and household items that you can’t dispose of through your regular waste collection. There will be a limit of 15 items per drop and items must be delivered by car or in a trailer. No trucks are allowed. From 11.30am-2.30pm food businesses from Murrindindi Shire and City of Greater Dandenong will be showcasing their products. The social sector is a rapidly expanding sector of the economy, which sits alongside the private (business) and public (government) sectors.

There are many social enterprises operating in the City of Greater Dandenong, and Council recognises that these businesses also need support.

It includes organisations with a social conscious, including social enterprises, charities, cooperatives and not-for-profit organisations.

Two such organisations are: ► Twich – a sewing collective for migrant women ► Carers of Africa, a migrant support group whose Sleep Well Project is turning plastic bags into sleeping mats for the homeless.

The sector plays an increasing role in delivering employment, education, health and social care, housing, and environmental outcomes to the community. Victoria is now home to more than 5,000 social sector organisations, employing more than 75,000 people. Social enterprises are the backbone of the social sector, and derive a substantial portion of their income from trade or service provision and use their profits to create social benefit.

Council’s Economic Development Unit is keen to hear from other social enterprises who have ideas or opportunities they would like to explore with some help from Council. Home based businesses are also eligible to tap into Council’s expertise, networks and resources. For more information email business@cgd.vic.gov.au or phone 8571 1550.

An opportunity to get fit Meet new friends and get fit while playing in a mid-week men’s tennis competition. Tennis clubs across the area are calling for men who have retired from the work force, or who work on a part time basis and can join in a regular Wednesday morning competition.

The competition accommodates all standards of tennis, with four sections from C Special to A Reserve.

Dandenong Urban Garden Central Dandenong is turning green thanks to a new community garden project overseen by youth support agency TRY. TRY is an organisation that creates opportunities for young people to change their lives through the chance to work. The organisation helps mentor and train vulnerable and at-risk youth who are looking to change their lives.

A team from TRY has been working in Halpin Way, Dandenong, to build a community garden that will be used to share in the communal benefits of a green space.

The workers spent weeks building garden beds and preparing the site for planting, as part of their studies towards a nationally accredited building qualification. The garden will soon be open to community groups who will plant seeds and tend to their plants, producing food that can be shared among themselves and the wider community.

Clubs across the Dandenong District include those at Springvale South, Doveton and Dandenong, while teams from nearby Waverley district also take part in the competition. Men who are interested in joining in can contact Lindsay Coster on 9803 5331 or 0419 535 537.

Visit greaterdandenong.com to keep up to date with the progress of the Dandenong Urban Garden and to find out more about the community groups planting the garden beds, and how their bounty will be used.
