2021 Season

(July – December)

WELCOME TO SEASON 2021 (JULY-DECEMBER) WHERE EVERYONE CAN CONNECT.

We welcome you back to the beautiful Drum Theatre for part two of Season 2021. If you made it to one of our 31 season program performances in the first half of the year or visited one of the many activities that are run by the community in the venue, you will have noticed a buzz of excitement in the air! Live performance is back and it brings people together. We are excited to bring you some more exceptional events, experiences and entertainment to connect with friends and your community in 2021. This season (July - December 2021) brings more professional live performances with a local flavour, a couple of national tours and some old fashioned-theatre magic. There are more ways to participate with creative workshops for both adults and children. Experiencing the arts is important to individual and community wellbeing and provides a way for us to look at subjects that can be difficult to discuss. This season you will see young people expressing how the pandemic has impacted their lives, with humour and insight. We will also take a look into the experience of homelessness, hear some amazingly uplifting music and be enthralled by spectacular circus. The Drum has clear COVIDSafe protocols in place and the latest updates about what you can expect is on our website. Our friendly staff are happy to answer any questions you may have. While you are on our website, take a look at our Drum Theatre Digital page where you will see all the Local Home Delivery videos made during isolation as well as the Drum Theatre Virtual Tour series. So now, as we round out 2021, we hope you will be uplifted, inspired and moved. Not only that, you will be supporting the local arts industry at the same time. We welcome our Membership Partners: Beletti Restaurant; City Edge Apartment Hotels; and our new partner Ettamo Eatery, all offering generous discounts to our members and patrons. We look forward to seeing you, your friends and family at the Drum. From all of us at the Drum Theatre

unHOWsed BY TASHMADADA

More older women are experiencing homelessness than ever before. In unHOWsed these women take centre stage and shine a light on the unexplored territory of lives lived on the edge. Their real voices are strong and significant. In a series of poetic, non-linear and true narratives, they bare the emotional baggage that comes with homelessness. unHOWsed is a multidisciplinary performance work about older women’s homelessness drawn from their real experience, with pathos and humour. It is a very relevant and timely topic affecting increasing numbers of women. It is currently one of the fastest growing types of homelessness. Recent census data shows that in five years the number of older women experiencing homelessness has increased by 31%, Homelessness Australia reported the number of older women ‘couchsurfing’ increased 83% and the number of older women sleeping in cars rose 75% in four years. “…Not a play – a work of refined art… An inspired and enlightening piece.” Stage Whispers

“Theatre doesn’t get anymore special or unique than this.“ Theatre Travels

“UnHOWsed is one of the most important works you’ll see. It’s under 60 minutes, and totally powerful. These are brave, real women, and they’re sharing a slice of themselves with the world to shed light on an experience far vaster and pervasive than the space of the stage.“ Theatre Press

OUR STORY LOCAL STORIES MADE BY LOCAL PEOPLE…

A theatre piece made by young people from the area, aged 13-30, reshaping the image of youth and discovering the bonds we share. Our Story is exactly that, a story of what it means to be human in the South Eastern suburbs. It’s a story of young and old, the collision of cultures and peoples. It’s the story of you and me; told through Indigenous storytelling styles, dance, song, rap and most importantly, food. Our Story explores the things that bind us together as a community, the parts of our collective identity that transcend culture and language. Our Story speaks with a fresh and honest voice and will reshape how our young people are perceived. It is the first piece of independent theatre to be made in and presented at the Drum Theatre and will be the first of many local stories told in the theatre.
