Mayor ’s message Welcome to the October edition of Greater Dandenong Council News. This month we celebrate the youngest and oldest members of our community. The Greater Dandenong Children’s Festival comes to a close with the headline event Little Day Out being held on October 6. See the opposite page to find out more about the Little Day Out and read about the Mayor’s Family Fun Day on Saturday 26 October, on page 7. The Victorian Seniors Festival is also in full swing this month, with fun activities and events happening across the city. See page 8 for more information.

Mayor Cr Roz Blades AM

Greater Dandenong is the most culturally diverse community in Australia. Two-thirds of our residents were born overseas, many of them coming to Australia as refugees. This month we celebrate our refugee community via the Home exhibition at the Walker Street Gallery. See the opposite page to find out more. October is Community Safety Month, and the safety of our residents and visitors to Greater Dandenong is important to Council. Turn to page 12 to read about how you can prevent graffiti on your property and discover the extent of Council’s CCTV network. I would like to thank you all for reading this month’s magazine, and encourage you all to join me at the end of the month for my family fun day. I look forward to meeting you there.

The HOME Exhibition returns to Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre this month.

The artwork may or may not speak about the refugee experience but reflect the interests and passions of the artists.

The exhibition features the work of aspiring artists with an asylum seeker or refugee background.

This year featured artists include Baaqiy Ghazali, Zakiria Tahirian, Zahra Ali, Saba Hakim, Sha Sarwari and Salah Murad.

The exhibition aims to recognise and nurture the talents of refugee and newly-arrived artists, and provides them with opportunities to develop professional pathways to working in visual arts.

HOME will be on display from Thursday 3 October to Saturday 2 November, with a special launch event happening on Saturday 5 October at 2pm. Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre is on the corner of Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong. Visit greaterdandenong.com/home for more information.

The Springvale Community precinct is really taking shape. I have been watching closely as the world class community facility is built, and I am really excited to see the open date in 2020 get closer. Recently Council sought expressions of interest from commercial or social enterprise businesses interested in

I am also really proud to note that this building has been designed with sustainability principles in mind. Council has a vision to be one of the most sustainable cities in Australia by 2030, and this new facility will certainly help us make an impact. In addition to a 5-star Green Star Rating we are targeting Net Zero Emissions for the building operations. Design features include efficient heating and cooling systems, low-energy LED lighting, and the installation approximately 730 solar panels on the rooftop. Greater Dandenong is particularly affected because of our larger share of vulnerable and low income communities, who are already being impacted by rising power prices and more days of extreme heat. That’s why I’m passionate about Greater Dandenong being a leader in tackling climate change.

Council is also entering into Power Purchase Agreements to buy all our electricity from renewable sources by 2020–21. This includes the electricity used to power council buildings, and the lights in our parks, residential streets and sports grounds.

Powering ahead with renewable energy But Council is not just waiting for a document to be finished. Solar panels have been installed on the Dandenong Civic Centre. As you can see in the photo I went up to have

But for recycling to be successful we require an all of community approach to ensure everyone is doing the right thing and only putting recyclables in the yellow bin. Items incorrectly disposed of in the recycling bin can contaminate whole truckloads of recycling which can slow down processing. Next month we celebrate National Recycling Week (November 11–17). Visit greaterdandenong.com/waste for more information about recycling and the waste process. Making solar affordable for residents Council has signed up to Solar Savers to help residents with the costs of installing solar. Solar Savers makes high quality solar panels available at affordable prices, with further support for pension card holders and low-income households. Working for You

Support for Carers Caring for someone living with a disability can place a lot of stress on someone, but support is available. A walking group jointly organised by Council, EACH and Moira Disability and Youth Services, is connecting carers in a relaxed social setting.

Join the Stride and Strive Carers Walking Group each month to meet other carers and learn more about services and supports available.

Transforming Springvale

Improvements include widened footpaths for pedestrians and trader activities, new garden beds, more trees, more seating, improved street lighting and new public art work.

The Springvale Boulevard Project will transform Springvale Road into a signature boulevard, reinforcing the shopping district as one of Melbourne’s leading cultural destinations.

Once a contractor is appointed, construction is expected to commence in 2020. When construction dates are set, the Springvale community will be provided regular project updates on Council’s website and by direct engagement with affected traders.

Council conducted extensive community consultation to gain ideas for the future of Springvale Road. More than 1000 people contributed to the consultation and a design proposal for the project reflects the community’s aspirations.

Visit greaterdandenong.com/ springvaleboulevard for more information.

Housing in Greater Dandenong

Walkers meet at Burden Park, Heatherton Road, Springvale South at 9.30am on the third Wednesday of each month, and walk along an accessible path around the park. The walk is followed by a coffee and chat session at a nearby café. Join the group in 2019 on: ► 16 October ► 20 November ► 18 December Find out more information or register your interest through Moira on hello@ moira.org.au or 8552 2222.

Recently Greater Dandenong Mayor Roz Blades AM hosted a Mayoral Social Housing Forum to investigate the future of affordable housing options in the city. Mayor Blades has a long history of being an advocate on the issues of housing and homelessness. Recently, along with Council officers, the Mayor visited TRY Build in Dandenong South to view their new social housing project. TRY Build’s UnContained project aims to build affordable, sustainable social housing while creating training and employment opportunities in the building and construction industry for disadvantaged and at-risk young people. The program is the only one of its type in south east Victoria and is designed to support up to 60 young people (aged 16–25) who are socially, educationally disadvantaged and disengaged each year.

Tiny homes and modular housing are being used in Victoria and internationally to help provide housing solutions to the growing numbers of people experiencing homelessness. Launch Housing recently delivered a 57-unit housing project that utilised medium term leases of unused State Government land with transportable tiny homes to provide accommodation for people experiencing homelessness. Council will continue to explore affordable housing options for the Greater Dandenong community and will continue to advocate on the issues of housing and homelessness.

Safe City Greater Dandenong Council’s Safe City CCTV program started in 2009 and is one of the largest open space closed circuit television networks in Victoria. The program operates cameras in and around key precincts within the city with the aim of creating a safer environment for residents, businesses and visitors in Greater Dandenong.

Follow Your Waste Have you ever wondered what happens to your recycling, household rubbish and garden waste once it gets emptied into the trucks? You can learn more about the process and how to reduce waste and become a better recycler on this Follow Your Waste tour. Visit Polytrade Materials Recovery Facility in Dandenong South and discover how recyclable materials are sorted, packed and processed into new products. The next stop is a landfill facility in Hampton Park, where you can explore landfill processes, including how a landfill is constructed and what happens to garbage once it reaches landfill.

The third stop is a tour of Veolia organics processing facility in Dandenong South, where you can see how garden waste is transformed into quality compost and mulch. The final stop is a tour of Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve in Springvale South. Council is planning a tour in late October and another one in November. Dates to be confirmed. The free tours include lunch. To find out more phone 8571 1702.

Graffiti affects everyone in the community, but there are some ways you can help deter vandals from attacking your property. Blank walls and fences attract graffiti, as do corner blocks and high visibility fences. Here are some helpful hints to prevent graffiti crime: ► Use

appropriate garden planting, including vines and spiky plants

All Safe City CCTV footage is transferred in real time to Dandenong or Springvale police stations where it can be monitored. Visit greaterdandenong.com/ cctv to view a full map of camera locations.

Graffiti Prevention Graffiti is vandalism including writing, drawing, scratching or otherwise defacing property without consent.

The Safe City CCTV system currently covers a number of key locations including:

► Use

darker coloured materials for fences

► Use

an anti-graffiti coating in high risk areas

► Maintain

your property, a well looked after home is less attractive to vandals

Market inspires business

Small Business Bus Dandy Makers Market is a handmade craft and artisan food market with a difference.

The Victorian Government’s Small Business Bus is here to help Greater Dandenong’s small businesses.

The market is a social enterprise of the Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC), and offers courses to help turn a passion into a business, as well as the opportunity to sell wares at the Dandenong Market.

Whether you are planning, starting or growing your small business the bus can help you.

Business course graduate Alem Abyssinia said the market was instrumental in helping establish her business, Coffeeland. “Without the Dandy Makers Market, I couldn’t have pictured myself starting my very own Ethiopian coffee roasting business. This space has allowed me to bring my product to the community, and has also assisted me with my packaging, marketing and pricing,” Ms Abyssinia said. “Having my homeland tradition in this market is very exciting and I’m confident by its potential and grateful for the support.” The Dandy Makers Market is located on the terrace at Dandenong Market and is held on the second Sunday of each month. The market closed for a winter hiatus and returns on Sunday 13 October. Contact dandymakers@ smrc.org.au or phone 9767 1900 to find out how to turn your skill or hobby into a small business.

Many Faiths, One People showcases places of worship within the City of Greater Dandenong, and celebrates the faith and spiritual communities whose presence has greatly enriched our city. The book shows the places that are treasured and sacred havens, the spaces of reflection and refuge, and the sanctuaries of belonging and gathering. It also tells the stories of communities that have endured significant hardship to build better lives and how faith has sustained and nurtured them on these journeys. moving on to the Community Centre at 26 Chandler Road, Noble Park for an exhibition, lunch and concert. Community School principal Orysia Stefyn said everyone was invited to the celebrations. “We would like to invite everyone that has been associated with the school and the community centre for a reunion, but we would also like to invite other members of the community. We welcome all,” Mrs Stefyn said.

Council is encouraging students to walk, ride or scoot to school during October as part of the VicHealth Walk to School initiative. Join the active travel revolution and experience a wide range of benefits, including improved fitness and better social connections. Walking or riding to school can often be quicker than hopping in the car as traffic congestion is at its peak during school drop off and pick up times.

Local schools have already registered for the initiative with some great prizes on offer for participants. It’s not too late to join the fun. Visit walktoschool. vic.gov.au for more information or to register.
