Mayor ’s message Welcome to the September issue of The City. This month we celebrate the start of Spring. Arguably the most colourful season on the calendar, Council celebrates every year with a Spring Festival at Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve. See page 3 for more information. Council will also celebrate our youngest residents with the sixth annual Children’s Festival starting on 22 September. With so many fun activities including daily movies in Harmony Square, this year’s festival has a magical theme. Turn to page 8 to read more about the festival and its headline event the Little Day Out.

Budget consultation

While the 2019–20 financial year seems like a long way off, Council is beginning the process of planning for next year’s budget. Council would like to hear what is important to our residents and what you would like included in the next budget.

► Lightwood Ward

The focus of the project will be Springvale Road, between Lightwood Road and Windsor Avenue, and improvements will include wider footpaths, new garden beds, trees, improved lighting, safety and comfort enhancements and artwork. I look forward to sharing more details in the coming months. I’m also delighted to see that works are progressing well on the Springvale Community Precinct, with construction starting on the new library, meeting spaces and civic area. Once completed, this area will no doubt become the new heart of Springvale. Springvale continues to undergo a visual change with progress on both the Springvale Community Precinct and Springvale Boulevard projects. The Springvale Boulevard project will transform Springvale Road into a signature boulevard and make the suburb stand out as one of Melbourne’s leading cultural destinations.

► Silverleaf Ward As a councillor I have always been committed to supporting older people in our community to be more independent and to remain at home longer. I am pleased to see how much positive work council is doing for older residents who make such a valuable contribution to our community. I am a keen supporter of events and initiatives which encourage our older residents to remain fit and active members of the community. Community transport is a big concern for our older and most frail residents as it plays an important role in allowing them to participate in community life. We are currently seeking community feedback on ways we can plan and develop community transport options into the future. Council has formed a committee dedicated to better supporting the needs of seniors in our community in response to needs identified in Council’s Positive Ageing Strategy. The committee is made up of representatives from local

On a different note, while many of us like to do the right thing and donate our unwanted household items and clothing to charity shops, it is important to note that these shops only accept donations during open hours. This ensures that your generously donated goods remain in good, saleable condition for those who need them most.

Some op shops have been reporting goods being dumped after hours, resulting in items being stolen or left out to be ruined by the weather. The cost of cleaning and sorting through dumped items can be substantial and often take away from the good work these charities are doing. Council signs outside local charity shops clearly advise that leaving donations outside operating hours is considered illegal dumping. This is an offence carrying penalties of up to $5500. Council also issues on the spot fines of $303 to those caught offending, so donations left at the wrong time can end up being very costly for the giver. If you would like to contact me about any local issues please email me at Youhorn.chea@cgd.vic.gov.au or phone 0417 320 645.

Cr Maria Sampey seniors clubs, Council staff and I am also pleased to be a member. This committee has assisted with the planning of this year’s Seniors Festival booklet. You can pick up a copy at any of Council’s customer service centres. Most of the events are free or gold coin donation. One of the highlight events of this year’s festival is the Seniors Multicultural Dance, which will be held on Friday 21 September at Springvale City Hall. It is a wonderful celebration of seniors from different multicultural backgrounds. I personally initiated bringing this back as an event after a break of five years due to feedback from residents about how important it was to them. I am sure that this year’s dance will be bigger and better. Please refer to page 7 for more details. Another key event is the Seniors Afternoon Dance at the Jan Wilson Centre on Friday 12 October from 12pm–3pm. Bookings required, please call 8571 1436.

If you would like to contact me about any local issues, please phone me on 9790 1291 or mobile 0438 800 027.

Working for You

Walk to school make a healthy choice next month…

All aboard for bus campaign Greater Dandenong residents are being urged to share stories about how poor bus service is affecting their lives as part of an advocacy campaign for better public transport. The Eastern Transport Coalition (ETC), a council-led public transport action group, has launched the More and Better Bus Services campaign to improve bus services across local government areas including Greater Dandenong, Knox, Maroondah, Yarra Ranges, Whitehorse, Monash and Manningham.

Students at Keysborough Primary School will be taking part in the Walk to School program next month.

Council is urging all students to make a healthy choice next month and scoot, cycle or walk to school. Join the VicHealth Walk to School campaign to make a healthy change for your whole family and for your chance to win some great prizes. Every October Walk to School encourages kids and families to ditch the car in favour of a healthier way of getting to school.

Council is encouraging local schools to sign up for the program, with a fun creative element giving students the chance to win some great prizes this year. Decorate your shoes, scooter or bike and share the results for your chance to win. Last year 12 local schools took part in the challenge, and this year Council wants to see even more join in the fun. Visit walktoschool.vic.gov.au for more information or to register.

Parking tips Doing this can create an unsafe situation for other road users and may cost you up to $97.

www.greaterdandenong.com

Cr Blades, who represents Greater Dandenong on the ETC, said the coalition was asking for transport that meets the needs of commuters and reduces the impact on the environment. In recent months ETC members have met with Labor, Liberal and Greens parties in the lead up to the State Election to brief them on the campaign. “We’ve been letting them know that the bus network needs an urgent review, and that voters in our community want funding commitments, not just nice statements,” Cr Blades said. “We want commuters to share their stories and help us lobby these politicians.”

Did you know it is illegal to stop at the side of a road marked with a continuous yellow line?

The City of Greater Dandenong reminds motorists that whenever you see a continuous yellow line along the side of the road to treat it like a ‘No Stopping’ sign and remember not to stop or park next to the line.

Cr Roz Blades said a Public Transport Victoria customer satisfaction survey from 2017 found that bus commuters were the least satisfied of any public transport group for service delivery.

Yellow lines are a visual reminder to motorists that it is unsafe to stop and are there to help make our roads safer for all users.

The ETC is advocating for 50 transport projects that will improve the liveability, connectivity and sustainability in Melbourne’s east. Visit etc.org.au to find out more about the campaign or to share your story.

Our Stories A diverse range of short stories have been captured and recorded as part of an English literacy program run through Greater Dandenong Libraries. The Our Stories project, which includes a booklet and CD featuring 19 different stories, will be launched this month as part of Adult Learner’s Week (1–8 September). The stories were written by people learning English as a second language and were recorded by volunteers. The result is a colourful and personal learning tool that will be available through the Greater Dandenong Libraries.

The booklet and CD will be used to help teach students learning English, but also doubles as a wonderful way to enrich the oral history of the Greater Dandenong community. Students and volunteers spent six weeks being guided on the art of writing and recounting a story by a professional storyteller and teachers. The diverse range of stories covers everything from love, to settling in a new home and quirky childhood tales. Our Stories was made possible thanks to funding via an Adult Literacy Grant from the State Library of Victoria and the Public Library of Victoria Network. It was completed in collaboration with Greater Dandenong Libraries, Chisholm TAFE, the Springvale and Dandenong Neighbourhood Houses and volunteers from the Social Knitwork group.

Peer2Peer Study The Peer2Peer Study program helps students from Year 6 to Year 12 seek help with their studies from other students and volunteers. The program aims to provide students with a safe and comfortable environment to interact with other students, encouraging them to learn from each other and develop a positive relationship between schools and year levels. It also enables students to develop their self-confidence through assisting other students and asking for assistance. Peer2Peer Study is free and runs every Monday from 4pm-6pm during school terms at Springvale Library and Dandenong Library. For information phone 1300 620 930. The Dandy Makers Market will showcase new and emerging crafters and producers of artisan foods, giving stallholders the opportunity to become financially independent by running their own business. Dandenong Market General Manager Jennifer Hibbs said the first Makers Market would be held in October and would feature a range of handmade goods made by stallholders. “A lot of the traders involved in the Makers Market have a background in handmade goods so this is the perfect opportunity to work together for everyone’s benefit,” Ms Hibbs said. “The stallholders gain financial independence and we have new products in the market that reflect the diversity of our local community, allowing us to offer a point of difference from other local markets.”

SMRC Business Improvement and Communications Manager, Ms Sue Brown, said the centre provided business training and mentoring to assist the stallholders to become market ready. “We acknowledge that a lot of potential stallholders haven’t tapped into the fact that there is an opportunity for their passion or hobby to be turned into a business,” Ms Brown said. “It’s an opportunity for non-traditional employment skills to be turned into entrepreneurial skills and for the stallholders to become financiallyindependent through a micro business.” The first Makers Market will be held on Sunday 14 October from 10am–3pm and will coincide with the SMRC’s 25th anniversary celebrations. The Unity in Diversity Festival will showcase local community groups and businesses, entertainment, rides and food and will be held on the surrounds of the SMRC building in Clow Street, next to the market.
