As the community foundation serving the Greater New Orleans region, we’re at our greatest when we include everyone’s vision. What do YOU imagine to make New Orleans GREATER? In the pages that follow, you’ll meet people with a passion for making a difference: donors who’ve come to the Foundation to collaborate with other change-makers, along with people whose ideas— and hard work—are being funded by these donors. In our new Center for Philanthropy, conceptualized and funded by visionaries like you, we’re coming together to address challenges, brainstorm solutions, and fund organizations that achieve results. We’re imagining—and building—the greatest region possible. Since 1983, we’ve been the center around which people gather to make the Greater New Orleans region a vibrant community for all. We’re here to make the most of your philanthropy, whether in this lifetime or as an enduring legacy for generations to come. We can’t thank you enough for IMAGINING GREATER. Cheryl R. Teamer, Board Chair | Andy Kopplin, President & CEO

APPRECIATIVE AC TIVIS T S When Dr. Jody Gates and her partner of 42 years, Marilyn McConnell, were invited to contribute to the new LGBT Fund at the Greater New Orleans Foundation they responded enthusiastically. “Organizations need money to survive, and the South lags other regions in supporting LGBT causes,” Marilyn says. “We think it’s important to do what we can to make the world a safer place—for everyone.” “The Foundation has a strong reputation and has had tremendous success bringing people together,” Jody adds. “We welcome their partnership in eliminating homophobia because every little bit helps.”

COMMUNIT Y CHAMPI ONS Linda and Gordon Kolb, who have been in commercial real estate and development since 1969, “always knew that when we were in a position to give back, it would be with the Greater New Orleans Foundation,” says Gordon. “What the Foundation does for so many people, organizations, and parishes is simply amazing, and we’re ecstatic to be a part of it.” “We have enormous love for New Orleans,” Linda adds, “and believe there’s a renaissance underway in this city. We want to be part of that: great schools, great streets, great neighborhoods, great philanthropy.” “When New Orleans is greater, everyone is better.”

SEEING THE POSSIB ILITIES Newcomb College graduate Emily Schoenbaum migrated between New Orleans and Washington, D.C., until “New Orleans won my heart” permanently last Mardi Gras. She opened the Bloomin’ Youth Fund at the Greater New Orleans Foundation because “I’ve seen the profound impact that nature can have on inner city kids and I want to give every child in New Orleans the opportunity to experience it and, as a result, imagine greater possibilities for themselves.” The fund supports environmental education for young people, such as the Grow Dat Youth Farm at City Park and Teaching Responsible Earth Education (TREE).

HONOR ING WHAT YOU LOVE Xavier graduate Karl Connor always believed that the quality of his education—and the mentorship of Dr. Norman Francis, Xavier’s former president—were instrumental in his own professional success. As Karl’s 50th birthday approached, his wife, Monika McKay, established a scholarship fund in his name at the Greater New Orleans Foundation, invited friends to a surprise party and, in lieu of gifts, requested donations to the fund. Though Karl hadn’t wanted a party, or a fund in his name, he now says, “it was the best party I’ve ever attended and the best gift I’ve ever received.” Together, the two hope that the Karl Connor Scholarship Fund will expand the possibilities for deserving New Orleanians.

THANK YOU FOR THE GREATER NEW ORLEANS FOUNDATION WISHES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE GENEROUS INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WHO ESTABLISHED FUNDS IN 2015. Caroline Keller Loughlin Fund for the Benefit of City Park – Caroline Keller Loughlin
had a lifelong passion for public park spaces and was a longtime trustee of the National Association of Olmstead Parks. To commemorate her passion for parks and her devoted and valuable service to the RosaMary Foundation, the RosaMary Foundation established the Caroline Keller Loughlin Fund for the Benefit of City Park. The trustees were delighted to endow the fund at The Greater New Orleans Foundation, continuing a partnership that goes back to RosaMary’s founding in 1939.
Espinosa-DuRapau Fund – Dr. Victor J.
DuRapau, Jr., knows the importance of educating young minds, having been an educator at Xavier University for 35 years. Currently, he is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. When Dr. DuRapau established his fund, he did so with the intent of educating the next generation of young people.
Hitt-Hawf Fund – Lauren Hitt and Adam Hawf
heard about the Greater New Orleans Foundation through a friend. They were excited about how easily and quickly they could make their donations to the many local nonprofits they care about, while only having to manage one or two tax receipts.
Christian and Deirdre Hooper Fund –
Family is incredibly important to Christian and Deirdre Hooper. When they started their fund at the Greater New Orleans Foundation, they were thrilled about the ease with which they could give. Even more exciting to them was the chance to teach their kids about philanthropy through their fund. 6

Mark Ingram Foundation – Mrs. Shonda
Ingram, mother of star Saints running back Mark Ingram, opened the Mark Ingram Foundation in partnership with her son to further their interest in supporting local organizations that aid children of an imprisoned parent. “We trust that the Foundation will identify groups working in this area for us because we simply don’t have the time to vet all the organizations that need our help,” said Mrs. Ingram.
Kepper Family Fund – Jim and Jo Nelle
Kepper are lifelong donors to their favorite nonprofits. They and their family have known what it means to have unsolicited, selfless support and care from both friends and strangers when disaster struck. Privileged still to share with others in their times of need, they were thrilled when they found out how easy and effective having a donor advised fund could make their giving.
McRae Family Fund – Cathy and Mark McRae
heard about a donor advised fund through their financial advisor. They are excited about being able to easily give to their favorite causes through their fund.
Kara and David Schonberg Family Fund – Teaching their family to give back to
the community is important to Kara and David Schonberg. When they learned about the advantages of setting up a donor-advised fund, they were thrilled to be able to easily give to the causes that were most important to them, while also supporting the Greater New Orleans Foundation. The fund has given the Schonbergs a seamless, quick way to donate and has helped them put more vision and strategy behind their giving.
St. Bernard Chapter LSU Alumni Fund
– The St. Bernard Kiwanis Foundation plays a huge role in philanthropy in St. Bernard Parish. They turned to the Greater New Orleans Foundation to help them invest their funds. This is one of the many funds the Kiwanis Foundation has established to help them continue their philanthropy in St. Bernard Parish.
Robby and Susie Showalter Family Fund
Knowing the importance of local philanthropy, Robby and Susie Showalter give to benefit their home parish of St. Bernard. Partnering with the St. Bernard Kiwanis Foundation to open their fund, they know that their funds will benifit good causes in St. Bernard Parish.
Anonymous Fund #1 – Social activism plays
a huge role in these fundholders’ lives. Being able to easily give to the nonprofits that are doing this type of work both locally and nationally is one reason they decided to partner with the Greater New Orleans Foundation to open a donor advised fund. You’ve just read about individuals and families whose experiences and values have shaped their giving. What about you? If you would like to open a fund with cash, stocks, or other assets – and start directing grants immediately to your favorite nonprofit organizations – contact Vice President for Donor Relations Erin McQuadeWright at 504.598.4663 or erin@gnof.org.
Jackie and Dan Silverman Family Fund –
Local insurance executive Dan Silverman and his wife Jackie opened the Jackie and Dan Silverman Family Fund to support great nonprofit work in the city, as well as the New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter they founded after Hurricane Katrina. “In addition to the ease of giving to our favorite nonprofits, we see this as an opportunity to be a part of the local philanthropic community,” said Dan Silverman. OUR PAR TNERS IN Contributions to our Partners in Philanthropy campaign enable the Foundation to direct significant sums of money to important community projects. These gifts cover the Foundation’s operating expenses and enable it to continue its role of connecting donors to community needs.
“It’s important to me to support my community. From education to the arts to health and human services, the Greater New Orleans Foundation makes it easy for me to give back to the community that means the most to me.”– Elizabeth Boh

Working in Partnership with Professional Advisors like Katie
What’s the best part?
How can advisors partner with the Greater New Orleans Foundation?
Cornerstone Council 2015
The Cornerstone Council is a group of professional advisors including attorneys, financial advisors, accountants, and insurance professionals who connect their philanthropically-minded clients with the Foundation’s expert resources. In addition to being a GNOF fundholder, Katie is a member of Impact 100, the Foundation’s women’s giving circle that each year awards a $100,000 grant to a local nonprofit.
More and more people are turning to their professional advisors for advice on charitable giving because they want philanthropy to be part of their overall financial planning process. Of course people want the tax benefits, but more often than not, they’re driven by causes they’re passionate about. As professional advisors, we can play a significant role in how clients engage and plan their charitable giving. And, if we ever have questions about the overwhelming number of possibilities for giving, then we can turn to the experts at the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
How can professional advisors advance the conversation about philanthropy?
Oftentimes the opportunity to discuss philanthropy with clients occurs when it’s estate and year-end tax planning, or when a major business or personal decision is being made. Perhaps your client has sold a business, is writing a will, or planning retirement, or contemplating the sale of commercial real estate or other major assets. While starting a conversation about philanthropy may seem like a challenge, I’ve discovered most clients are glad to know that’s a level of service I can provide. Talking about philanthropy can benefit not only my client relationships, but the community as a whole.
It comes down to people. I represent a group of like-minded professionals who are passionate about this community. Our local partner is the Greater New Orleans Foundation, whose staff is willing to share their technical expertise and their vast community knowledge. After seeing how effective the Foundation is with connecting dollars to the community, my husband and I decided to open our own fund, so the Foundation is a great partner for me both personally and professionally.

EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE The difference between success and failure can come down to less than $100 for a formerly incarcerated person. Today, Zerase is proudly employed as a welder, thanks to a grant from The First 72+. “I was able to purchase necessary tools for my profession: a welding mask and jacket, and a hammer. Without them, I would not have this job.” The First 72+, a grantee of the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s recently established Second Chance Fund, was created by six formerly incarcerated men to meet transportation, shelter, and other immediate needs, as well as provide education, employment training, job tools, and long-term support for success for formerly incarcerated people. 18

A HELPING HAND FOR OUR NEIGHB OR S In response to the historic Louisiana floods of August 2016 that affected one-third of the state’s population, the Greater New Orleans Foundation launched several funds, including the NOLA Pay It Forward Fund in partnership with the Mayor of New Orleans. Leveraging our post-Katrina experience, the relief funds support early recovery efforts such as clean-up and mold remediation, as well as longer-term recovery initiatives such as housing, business development, advocacy, and civic engagement. Working with national foundations such as the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and state and local governmental agencies, we will ensure that recovery is equitable across the flood-impacted communities.

ENHANCING CONSERVATI ON Woodlands Conservancy manages 850 acres of forested wetlands that provide critical habitat and resting grounds for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds and other wildlife, while also buffering New Orleans from wind and floodwaters coming off the Gulf of Mexico. “Hurricane Katrina destroyed 80% of the region’s hardwood canopy,” explains Katie Brasted, Woodlands Conservancy executive director. “Our vision is to be the regional model for the conservation of hardwood forests and a leader in the advocacy and preservation of Louisiana’s coastal forest ecosystems.” This is one of 25 grants from the Foundation’s environmental portfolio in 2015. This year alone, the Foundation invested over $650,000 in programs that support the improvement of urban water management, the building of thriving coastal communities, the growth of the water economy in Southeast Louisiana, and other initiatives contributing to the sustainability and resiliency of our region. But becoming the first executive director at the newly created New Orleans Recreation Development Foundation was her first time at the helm of a nonprofit. “The Greater New Orleans Foundation’s Executive Director Intensive training helped me to create strategies for educating people about how recreation contributes to healthy, prosperous communities,” says Annie. “Connecting with the families we serve is the best part of my job.” The region’s nonprofit ecosystem is strengthened by the Foundation’s organizational effectiveness initiative. Last year alone, over 2,000 people representing 1,000 nonprofit organizations participated in workshops, coaching sessions, and webinars on such topics as advocacy and public policy, strategic partnerships, financial management, innovation, and leadership. MOVING TO LIVING WAGE J OBS New Orleans Works (NOW) is the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s employer-led workforce development initiative that trains workers for entry-level positions. It also trains incumbent workers for higher-level, better-paying jobs at all four community partners: Children’s Hospital, Daughters of Charity Services of New Orleans, Ochsner Health System, and Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System. Nearly 200 workers have completed NOW incumbent training programs. “I learned necessary skills thanks to NOW, enabling me to move up the ladder,” said Brigida Reid, a NOW graduate, “which is giving me a career instead of just a job.”
