HERE’S WHY

We back our region’s innovators. The New Orleans Black Mardi Gras Indian Cooperative is an innovative business start-up designed to help the creators of Black Mardi Gras Indian suits to develop a profitable market for their products while simultaneously building the world’s awareness of the cultural significance of their “brand.” Housed in NewCorp’s Arts and Cultural Incubator, the Black Mardi Gras Indian Cooperative will hire its first director through a grant from the Greater New Orleans Foundation.

WE’RE PROUD OF WHERE WE COME FROM… AND WHERE WE’RE GOING. Like you, the Greater New Orleans Foundation is committed to building a resilient, vibrant, and sustainable community in which individuals and families flourish and our region’s special character is celebrated and preserved. We work by partnering with people passionate about giving—turning their gifts into effective action, linking them with the grassroots organizations that are transforming this place we call home.

We’re here to help you make the most of your philanthropy, whether in this lifetime or as an enduring legacy for generations to come. We hope that the people you’ll see in these pages will inspire you to reflect on your own charitable goals and rekindle the passion for giving within you.

THAT’S WHY WE’RE HERE.

TURNING GOOD INTENTIONS INTO EFFECTIVE ACTION Concerned about the lack of autism-specific education in the Greater New Orleans area,

LINDA AND TOMMY WESTFELDT joined a group of like-minded parents and professionals in 1999 and founded The Chartwell Center, serving children with autism from three years to maturity. They established the Westfeldt Foundation at the Greater New Orleans Foundation as a way to provide continual support to The Chartwell Center and its growing number of programs.

“When our son was diagnosed with autism, the importance of educational philanthropy hit home.” –Thomas Westfeldt

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY NEEDS Joyce created the Edna B. and

JOYCE FAY WASHINGTON Breast Cancer Foundation—named after her mother—to offer emotional and spiritual support for underserved women facing cancer. Believing that women heal in the sisterhood of other women, she started a group that has been meeting continuously for 21 years.

“When I was diagnosed with cancer in 1989, it was ‘The Big C’ and nobody talked about it. I wanted to change that.” –Joyce Washington Ivery

CHANGING PROBLEMS INTO PROMISE MIKE AND LYNN COATNEY ’s giving focuses primarily on women’s health. When they joined friends on a recent trip to Ethiopia, they encountered several women’s health issues robbing girls of an education. Deepening their commitment, they helped to create Dignity Period allowing Ethiopian girls to stay in school by providing them with washable sanitary pads. “A $4 investment gives a girl a future,” Mike said. “We like those returns.”

“Giving has always been a core value of our family.” –Lynn and Mike Coatney

INVESTING IN NONPROFIT LEADERS

Since 2007, the

W.K. KELLOGG FOUNDATION

has partnered with the Greater New Orleans Foundation including a recent investment in the New Orleans Works (NOW) job training and placement collaborative and the Organizational Effectiveness initiative. “We focus on increasing capacity of organizations and individuals and connecting them so they don’t work in isolation,” Kellogg Foundation president Tabron says. “The Greater New Orleans Foundation helps us do both. Our partnership has been rich and, like all healthy partnerships, continues to grow and develop.”

“Our founder believed that the most effective change is created at the community level. Local people know best what their needs and challenges are.” – LaJune Montgomery Tabron

THE CENTER FOR PHILANTHROPY… A PHILANTHROPIC HEART FOR OUR COMMUNITY.

Our new Center for Philanthropy, which will open its doors in 2016, will not only serve as the Foundation’s new home, but as the headquarters for collaborative responses to the challenges and opportunities facing the Greater New Orleans region.

10 REASONS WHY: 1.

2.

Individuals and families will open charitable funds to support causes and charities they’re passionate about. National foundations will develop innovative solutions to community challenges with local partners.

3. Business, government, and nonprofits will create workforce models

resulting in hundreds of job placements in healthcare and manufacturing.

4.

Corporations will establish employee-led giving programs.

5.

Nonprofits will become more effective by attending weekly workshops and trainings on board governance, advocacy, financial management, and other topics.

6.

7.

8.

9.

Professional advisors and their clients will discuss tax advantages for complex gifts. Foundation staff will review hundreds of grant applications for highly competitive grant opportunities. Donors will receive up-to-the-minute information about critical issues such as our disappearing coastline, public education reform, and escalating levels of violence. Hundreds of regional nonprofits will receive promotional and fundraising information for a successful GiveNOLA Day campaign.

10. Green infrastructure such as underground cisterns and

rain gardens will be incorporated throughout.

SUPPORTING SECOND CHANCES Ex-offenders may have paid their debt to society, but they still face formidable odds. Without a job and a place to live it’s easy for them to end up back behind bars. That’s why TERRY

WILLIAMS

sought out Goodwill upon his release from prison. “They gave me a chance when I had no one else,” said Williams, who is a participant in Goodwill’s reintegration program, funded in part through the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s IMPACT program. To view a complete list of all 161 organizations receiving IMPACT grants totaling $5 million since 2009, please visit gnof.org/program/impact

INVESTING IN GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE The Greater New Orleans Foundation is working with the City of New Orleans, the Sewerage and Water Board, national foundations, and nonprofit partners to bring innovative water management solutions to protect the place we call home. This includes collaborating with new stormwater manager for the City of New Orleans,

PRISCA WEEMS; investing in

entrepreneurial solutions to how we live with water through a partnership with the Idea Village and Propeller in the annual Water Challenge; and, educating local leaders on stormwater management practices through the Urban Water Series.

INVESTING IN NONPROFIT LEADERS Created by the Greater New Orleans Foundation to build organizational effectiveness, the Executive Director Leadership Intensive gives visionary nonprofit leaders the skills they need to manage more effectively. “Like many executive directors, I have a passion for the work, not a degree in nonprofit management. The Executive Director Leadership Intensive greatly enriched my skillset, said

DARCY MCKINNON, executive director, New Orleans Video Access Center. To view all Organizational Effectiveness learning opportunities, please visit www.gnof.org/oe.

TRAINING TOMORROW’S WORKFORCE One of the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s most successful programs, New Orleans Works (NOW) identifies entry-level employment opportunities and trains jobseekers to fill them. NOW’s newest offering is a year-long training in medical coding and billing, developed in partnership with

DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY New Orleans. Graduates will receive

national certification qualifying them to work in this rapidly growing field. Since its inception, New Orleans Works (NOW) has successfully trained and placed more than 200 workers who now have the skills to move up within their field of work. WWW.GNOF.ORG

“I’m proud to support the Greater New Orleans Foundation because of the role it plays as a convener. The Foundation has the unique ability to bring together nonprofit, government, and business leaders to address our region’s challenges.” – Bob Brown

OUR PARTNERS IN PHILANTHROPY Contributions to our Partners in Philanthropy campaign enable the Foundation to direct significant sums of money to important community projects. These gifts cover the Foundation’s operating expenses and enable it to continue its role of connecting donors to community needs.
