Bell Shakespeare’s

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM By William Shakespeare Director Peter Evans

Venue: Riverlinks Westside Date: Tuesday 14 May Time: 7:30pm Duration: 120 minutes (including interval) Tickets: Full $42.00 / Concession $37.00 / Under 18 $29.00 Group (6+) $36.00 each Riverlinks Member $36.00 Riverlinks Member Concession $32.00 Shakespeare’s classic comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is reawakened in this breathless production brimming with magic, mirth and mayhem. Love is in the air in Athens – and it’s contagious. Besides the royal wedding, which is just days away, there are young lovers dreaming of enchanted futures together. Hermia and Lysander are besotted with one another, while Helena adores Demetrius. The only snag is that Demetrius loves Hermia – and he’s got Hermia’s father on his side. So nobody is happy. (Shakespeare wasn’t kidding when he said the course of true love never did run smooth.) Determined to be together, Hermia and Lysander meet in a moonlit forest with plans to elope. Following hot on their heels is Demetrius, who in turn is pursued by a lovelorn Helena. But the young lovers are not alone in the forest. Nick Bottom and his hapless bunch of tradies have gathered to rehearse a play to be performed at the royal wedding. And, hidden from human eyes, a mischievous sprinkling of faeries are also in the forest that night. The three worlds collide in an explosion of comic confusion that throws the future of all the lovers into jeopardy. This production is quick as a shadow. Fast, funny and family-friendly, this is A Midsummer Night’s Dream reimagined.

Family (from Latin: familia) is a group related either by consanguinity (by recognized birth) or affinity (by marriage or other relationship). It forms the basis for social order. The purpose of the family is to maintain the well-being of its members and of society. Goulburn Valley Concert Orchestra’s Annual Concert 2024 will highlight the instrumental sections, or families, of the orchestra. It will feature works that showcase the instrumental families of the orchestra, both individually, and collectively. The makeup of the instrumental families and the interplay between them will be explored. In addition, the orchestra will continue the collaboration which brings new works from local composers and arrangers and, as always, it will present some familiar favourites and cover a wide range of musical styles. The annual concert will be presented as an immersive multimedia experience suitable for all ages. Image by: Nicole Peters

LA BOHÈME Venue: Riverlinks Westside Date: Wednesday 31 July Time: 7:30pm Duration: 150 minutes (including interval) Tickets: Full $65.00 / Concession $60.00 / Under 18 $38.00 Group (6+) $59.00 Riverlinks Member $59.00 Riverlinks Concession $54.00

On a freezing Christmas Eve, love sparks. Two hands meet in the dark and four friends’ lives change forever. Experience the original bohemian love story. When Mimì meets Rodolfo, it’s love at first touch. They head out to bustling Café Momus, where the feisty Musetta and Marcello rekindle their relationship. But even the deepest love can’t warm a freezing winter. For our bohemians, everything is possible and the future can’t come quickly enough. Rodolfo and his friends are determined to make their mark on the world and experience everything it has to offer – but right now they’d settle for something warm to eat. Some emotions are too big for words alone, and for that, we have music. La Bohème exposes your soul to the feelings that only music can express. The music soars with the ecstasy of love, crackles with the pain of jealousy and cries with the agony of loss. Puccini’s score has always captured the soaring spirit of young love, and this new production breathes fresh life into one of the world’s favourite operas. Award-winning director Dean Bryant (Anything Goes, Sweet Charity) brings his trademark wit and vivacity to this new staging, which captures that giddy moment where you and your friends feel you’ll live forever.

Riverlinks presents A 29 Scenes Production

THE FENCE By Fleur Murphy

Venue: Riverlinks Westside Date: Saturday 31 August Time: 7:30pm Duration: 90 minutes (no interval) Tickets: Full $45.00 / Concession $40.00 / Under 18 $32.00 Group (6+) $38.00 Riverlinks Member $39.00 Riverlinks Member Concession $34.00

Boundaries blur as one woman navigates the delicate line between observation and intervention in this compelling new drama.

“a down-to-earth piece that deserves the widest possible audience” – Chris Boyd What do you do when you can’t look away? In the quiet streets of an ordinary suburb, the fence between two neighbouring houses comes down. Where once there was a clear separation between you and the couple next door, now there’s only a dirt line and human decency keeping prying eyes out of each other’s backyards. Except you’ve noticed they have a new baby and that she keeps locking herself out. And then there are the sounds late at night that have become impossible not to hear. Should you say something, do something? But is it what you think it is? And is it really your place to get involved? Shortlisted for the 2022 Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award, The Fence is a scintillating solo work about privacy, bravery, and testimony by acclaimed playwright Fleur Murphy (Nothing, Hearth). Performed by Louisa Mignone (Death of a Salesman, Wentworth, The Twelve), this gripping new play will lead you through the streets we know, shining a light on the violence found in our own backyards. Warning: mild coarse language and references to and descriptions of domestic abuse.

Melbourne Chamber Orchestra’s Artistic Director Sophie Rowell joins QSO Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici for a wonderful program that sees the MSO performing music of child prodigy Felix Mendelssohn alongside that of the (then) living legend he looked up to: the great Ludwig van Beethoven. Program Beethoven Violin Concerto Mendelssohn Symphony No.3 Scottish Artists Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Umberto Clerici conductor Sophie Rowell violin The terrifying tale of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is the manifestation of many-a-musician’s nightmares. If the fact that it was written in a just a few rushed weeks wasn’t bad enough, the violinist engaged for the premiere was so unprepared that he was forced to sight-read much of it during the concert. With its lyrical lines and effervescent display of the violin’s capabilities, however, Beethoven’s only work for violin and orchestra (thankfully) survived its origin story, and is now considered one of the best in the repertoire. Inspired by the ruins of the Palace of Holyrood, Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony evokes a musical restoration of the castle and its stories of love, war, betrayal, and murder. Bursting with intrigue, this symphony paints a sonic picture of pale Scottish light casting shadows on centuries-old, moss-covered stone.
