Classes are taught by PGA professional Ron Tristano and other qualified staff. Akron’s love of sports began long before King James took his first steps onto the court at St. Vincent-St. Mary’s gymnasium. In the early 1900s, intramural basketball teams from Akron’s rubber factories led to the formation of the National Basketball League (NBL) in the 1930s. Today, Akron is known as the home of LeBron James, but it’s also the birthplace of Stephen Curry and Larry Nance Jr. Professional football’s early history also runs through Akron. In 1920, the Akron Pros joined the American Professional Football Association (APFA). Downtown’s Canal Park opened in 1997 as home of Double-A baseball’s Akron Aeros. In 2013, the name was changed to the RubberDucks as a nod to the rubber and toy industry. Under head coach Caleb Porter, the University of Akron Zips won the 2010 NCAA National Championship in soccer.
