Making Memories

THE HISTORIC BUILDING at 175 Avon Belden Road has been the location of many memorable events in the lives of thousands over the years. Many students, teachers and school employees alike have walked through the doors for the first time and launched another chapter in their lives. When I began my teaching career at Avon Lake High School in 1971, the road was called Center Road or State Route 76, which was the number assigned to it by the state of Ohio until the mid-1970’s.

Times change, as has the building over the years. In the mid-20’s Avon Lake welcomed the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. power plant, and in the late 1940’s BF Goodrich. These major corporations brought many families to the community. Land that was once used for grape vineyards and farm fields gave way to bungalows and ranch style homes. They paired with the area to the east that was called Stop 45, and to the west Stop 65, to send an ever-growing population of children to the building at 175 Avon Belden. As a result, a series of additions created an expansive educational complex as the decades flew by. Each elevated an institution that has maintained a high standard of quality and excellence that generations of hardworking families pursued.

Today, Avon Lake is the proud home of the Ford Ohio Assembly Plant, Avient, Lubrizol and Mexichem/Orbia, along with an impressive array of small businesses, all of whom contribute to our bustling local economy. With growth and change come challenges, however the Avon Lake City Schools have always maintained an outstanding reputation and are a magnet for home buyers searching for the best educational opportunities.

As people move away, some return to what they once called home. What brings them back? Memories. The ones that inspired us to reach deeper into our inner selves to meet the challenges that we face almost every day.
