Take Flight Get Outside

1Let your imagination soar in Dayton, the “Birthplace of Aviation & So Much More!” In 2023 join the exciting 100th anniversary celebration of the free National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. Explore the museum’s 19 enclosed acres featuring over 350 aerospace exhibits, sit in cockpits, guide flight simulators and watch giant-screen aviation movies.

Continue your journey by discovering Dayton’s famed aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright and participating in the WilBEAR Wright Aviator Teddy Bear Passport Program. Pick up your passport brochure and get it stamped at the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park’s WrightDunbar Interpretive Center. Then, collect stamps at seven other amazing area aviation sites to qualify for a free, cuddly WilBEAR Wright aviator teddy bear to take home.

Don’t miss the original 1905 Wright Flyer III at the Wright Brothers National Museum at Carillon Historical Park, and Hawthorn Hill, the Wright family mansion. Visit the National Park’s Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center and stand where the Wrights tested their early flying machines and “truly learned to fly” in 1904 and 1905.

2Dayton is known as the “Outdoor Adventure Capital of the Midwest” for good reason. Whether your outdoor happy place is on land or water, you’ll find it here! Greater Dayton boasts the nation’s largest network of paved trails—350-plus miles—perfect for biking, rollerblading, jogging or walking. Plan multi-day trips to explore the trails while taking in nearby attractions and finding respite at area hotels.

Don’t go to a coast to “hang-ten!” Dayton offers man-made water features where you can surf on the Great Miami River in downtown Dayton. Surf Dayton provides rentals and classes so you can perfect your technique. Dayton’s rivers and lakes provide ample spaces for boating, kayaking, canoeing, crewing and SUPing, as well as fishing.

Five Rivers MetroParks, a nationally recognized MetroPark system with 16,000 acres of diverse habitats in over 20 different parks, gets its moniker from the five major waterways converging in Dayton, including the nearly 160-mile Great Miami River. Five Rivers MetroParks’ programming provides a myriad of opportunities to commune with the great outdoors.

Gardeners come from near and far to explore Dayton treasures such as Cox Arboretum, Wegerzyn Gardens, Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, and Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm.

Topname acts frequent the Fraze Pavilion in Kettering and the Rose Music Center at the Heights.

Celebrate African American Heritage

The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park commemorates three important Dayton historical figures—Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright and Paul Laurence Dunbar. Visit Paul Laurence Dunbar’s House to learn about this first publicly acclaimed African American poet and writer and friend of the Wrights. Born in Dayton in 1872 to two formerly enslaved people, literary genius Dunbar is considered by many to be one of America’s greatest black poets and writers. He sought equality for all people and gave works of beauty to the world.

The Dayton Contemporary Dance Company is a world-renowned dance company founded in 1968 by Dayton native Jeraldyn Blunden to create performance opportunities for dancers of color. Rooted in the African American experience, and recipient of numerous dance world honors, DCDC provides must-see performances in Dayton and across the globe.

Dayton was the epicenter of a new genre of music called funk in the 1970s and 80s. Dayton was a hotbed of funk bands such as The Ohio Players, Lakeside, Slave and Zapp that produced more than 110 charting singles between 1972 and 1998.

Visitors to the area can also explore two Historically Black Universities. Wilberforce University, founded in 1856, is the nation’s oldest private Historically Black University owned and operated by African Americans. Central State University is Ohio’s only public Historically Black University.

The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center located in Wilberforce serves to chronicle the varied experiences of African Americans, from their African origins to the present.
