Luck of the
Irish
The Dublin Irish Festival is billed as the largest three-day Irish festival on the planet.
By Jill Sell
From August 4–6 this year in Coffman Park, the festival features more than 500 performers from the U.S. and Ireland, including international, national and local favorites. There’s more Celtic, Irish rock and pipes and drum music than your ears can imagine. That doesn’t even include what you hear in music workshops. Always wanted to try playing a tin whistle? Here’s your chance. You’ll also get to witness incredible talent as several Irish dance groups take to the stage and showcase their quick feet.
Dublin Irish Festival
The Irish (and Irish-Americans) have a long, amazing history. On-site genealogists and cultural experts help you explore your heritage, and also showcase the fabrics, jewelry, art, literature and traditional crafts of Ireland. Also, immerse yourself in a recreated 10th century Irish Village.
What’s a festival without sports? Watch incredible feats of strength and endurance while athletes vie for bragging rights in the caber toss, hammer throw and stone put. Check out the very serious dart competition or sheep herding demonstrations.
Did someone mention lamb stew? Choose traditional Irish food or kid favorites, including pizza and French fries. Whiskey tastings (and beer) are also available.
And yes, the Celtic Canines are back — think impressive Irish Wolfhound or the Irish Water Spaniel, often a good family pet. Speaking of families…you could spend the entire day at the Wee Folk area (if your children had their way), with crafts and games.
“May the road rise up to meet you…may the wind always be back at your back…” and we’ll see you at the Festival!
original community, founded in 1810. Old brick buildings, a stone bridge and more than 15 restaurants and unique shops give the area its character and Irish charm.
And of course, Dublin is known for its food and drink opportunities all year round. Fadó Pub & Kitchen in Bridge Park is among Dublin’s elite eateries. The focus is on Europeanstyle food, much of it locally sourced, and its great ambiance. The furnishing and décor are from Ireland along with its owner. Try the popular brick-roasted chicken with colcannon or fish and chips. Feel like you’ve taken a trip overseas at the Dublin Village Tavern, a local favorite for over 20 years with Irish-inspired dishes and décor. The full-service bar offers Irish imports on tap, plus local brews and over 40 Irish whiskeys.
Around Town
Not all the fun in Dublin takes place on festival grounds. There are amazing Irish-themed things to do offsite and also on non-festival days when you just have to come back for a second visit.

If you have spare time during your visit, check out the Celtic Cocktail Trail. This mobile exclusive tour to try Irish-themed cocktails from around 20 sites offers prizes and a 21-and-older way to see the city. We love the drink names: The Ring of Kerry, Dublin Eye Opener and Skiberdeen.

Matt the Miller’s Tavern offers an upscale taste of Ireland, with its menu and ambiance inspired by a visit the owner made to the original location in Kilkenny. The Nashville hot chicken flatbread might not be an Irish original, but the hot honey cream cheese, Nashville hot chicken and pickles just might become a favorite.
Mezzo has a comprehensive wine list with upscale fare and a focus on balancing old-world tradition with new-world cuisine. Try the panko crusted salmon with butternut squash puree or a filet mignon cooked to perfection.
Build your own taco at Condado, where braised beef is among the protein selections offered. Start with the heat-packed Firecracker hard corn shell to build a spicy taco experience.
Z Cucina di Spirito is ideal for dessert lovers. This creative Italian spot offers house-made desserts that include gelatos, sorbets and limoncellos.
Cap City Fine Diner & Bar offers dinerstyle classics with a decidedly upscale twist, like the Cap City Diner Meatloaf served with buttermilk-chive mashed potatoes or the beef tenderloin kabobs with red wine reduction.
Ending on a Note Sweet
Finish your day in Dublin with a delicious dessert. Crumbl Cookies will bring their delicious treats to you, with a weekly menu that always includes milk chocolate chip but also features four to five seasonal specialties. Winans Chocolates + Coffees has been offering handmade candies for more than 60 years, and their coffees feature dessert-worthy seasonal concoctions. Whether you prefer beer, wine or a cocktail — or if you’re part of a group that contains a fan of each — Dublin has great choices for places to grab a drink. Getaway Brewing Company brings together wine, cocktails and brews from Seventh Son Brewing and Antiques on High (which focuses on sours and IPAs) in one beautiful setting with the vibe of a midcenturymodern airport. At Coast Wine House, find a new favorite and then bring home a bottle from their bottle shop. Try a white from Walla Walla and a red from Valpolicella. Grab a cocktail during happy hour at Market Bar in the bustling North Market Bridge Park and take it with you as you explore.
If it’s Turkish and Mediterranean fare you’re craving, Café Istanbul has kebabs, stuffed eggplant (karniyarik), salads and pides. Try the cacik, their homemade yogurt seasoned with minced cucumbers, dill and garlic and top off your meal with the baklava.
Oscar’s of Dublin combines the cozy vibe of a wine bar with a full menu that includes a small plates list that’s perfect for sampling and sharing over a glass of wine. The grilled steak sticks feature pickled radish and peppercornhorseradish sauce. Dip some crostini in the smoked salmon and trout dip.
1487 Brewery specializes in Bavarian brews (they make American-style too), like their signature Helles. The Pint Room doesn’t brew its own beer, but the folks there have a carefully curated assortment of more than 100 craft beers on tap. 26 2023 DUBLIN DESTINATION GUIDE
WATCH HOUSE: VISIT DUBLIN
Take a peek inside the unique Watch House artwork in
Coffman Park. Arts
For lovers of art and the outdoors alike, the City of Dublin is the perfect destination to blend the two interests with its more than 60 large and small-scale permanent, temporary and interactive public art projects. If that number seems intimidating, don’t fret! Dublin offers a few different guided trails to the city’s outdoor art to help you find your way.
By Coco Knostman
On its website, the Dublin Arts Council provides an interactive map with 21 different locations to explore as part of the Art in Public Places Mobile Tour. Some notable stops on the trail include the stone depiction of Wyandot Native American Chief Leatherlips, measuring at 12-feet tall; the otherworldly Watch House, which implements the imagery of a planetarium alongside a prehistoric Native American mound; the infamous Field of Corn containing over one hundred human-sized concrete ears of corn; a moving tribute to local icon and golf legend Jack Nicklaus; the startling and gravity-defying golden men of Exuvia; and Feather Point, an impressive construction representing both the revolutionary war hero Thaddeus Kosciuszko and Bill Moose, the last member of the indigenous Wyandot Tribe to have lived in Ohio.
For enthusiasts of the navigational activity known as geocaching, Dublin offers 18 opportunities for outdoor art and recreational fun with its RiverboxesTM. These permanent artist-created caches are located at various points along the Scioto River, and can be found using a written clue, GPS coordinates, a geocaching code or a QR code from the Riverboxes Passport. Mark your passport with a unique stamp found inside each of the Riverboxes. Once you find all 18 locations, turn your passport into the Dublin Arts Council to receive a specially minted geocoin. Dublin recently added two new Riverboxes to its collection, “Equal East” and “Equal West,” located on either side of the Dublin Link bridge.
