SETTING THE STAGE
for success
We believe that all Cleveland youth should have access to high-quality arts education. Through the generosity of our donors, we have invested nearly $2 million since 2016 to scale up neighborhoodbased programs that now serve 1,500 youth year-round in music, dance, theater, photography, literary arts and curatorial mastery. That’s setting the stage for success. Find your passion, and partner with the Cleveland Foundation to make your greatest charitable impact.

WELCOME Dear Friends,
O
at Playhouse Square
n behalf of our artists, staff and Board of Trustees, welcome to Great Lakes Theater’s 56th season! Our mission, “to bring the pleasure, power and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience,” guides our mainstage productions as well as our educational programming, in the belief that theater holds the capacity to illuminate truth and enduring values, celebrate and challenge human nature and actions, and provide our student audiences a glimpse of a broader world and the wellspring of learning made possible through the arts.
This finale of our 2017–18 season is Larry Gallagher’s beloved retro-hit revue, Beehive – The 60s Musical. Resident Director Victoria Bussert brings her usual flair to a production starring six phenomenal women of the musical theater whose voices will transport you to a nostalgic world of the 1960s. We extend our special appreciation to The Kulas Foundation, which has sponsored our musical productions for the last several years as part of The Kulas Musical Theater Series at Great Lakes Theater. We are also grateful to the FirstEnergy Foundation for their generous support of Beehive as a production sponsor. I encourage you to read through your program and look around the theater tonight. You will see the names of many friends, partners, corporations and foundations whose generous support makes all of this possible. We hope that you will consider joining these donors by becoming a member of the Great Lakes Theater family with your gift! (As a reminder, ticket sales account for only 50 percent of the cost of producing our mainstage and educational programming.) Complete Membership information can be found in the insert enclosed in this playbill. We extend our deepest gratitude to all of our sponsors and annual Members, with continued appreciation to our partners of over 35 years at Playhouse Square and the tireless efforts of our Board of Trustees, dedicated administrative staff, gifted artists and the tremendous generosity of this community! I hope to see you in our audience again in 2018–19 for our extraordinary upcoming season.

ABOUT GREAT LAKES THEATER
T
he mission of Great Lakes Theater (GLT), through its mainstage productions and its education programs, is to bring the pleasure, power and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience. Since the company’s inception in 1962, programming has been rooted in Shakespeare, but GLT’s commitment to great plays spans the breadth of all cultures, forms of theater and time periods –– including the 20th century –– and provides for the occasional mounting of new works that complement the classical repertoire. Classic theater holds the capacity to illuminate truth and enduring values, celebrate and challenge human nature and actions, revel in eloquent language, and preserve the traditions of diverse cultures and generate communal spirit. On its mainstage and through its education programs, GLT seeks to create visceral, immediate experiences for participants, asserting theater’s historic role as a vehicle for advancing the common good and helping people make the joyful and meaningful connections between classic plays and their own lives.
The company’s commitment to classic theater is magnified in the educational programs that surround its productions. Since its inception, GLT has had a strong presence in area schools, bringing students to the theater for matinee performances and sending specially trained actor-teachers to the schools for weeklong residencies developed to explore classic drama from a theatrical point of view. GLT is equally dedicated to enhancing the theater experience for adult audiences. To this end, GLT regularly serves as the catalyst for community events and programs in the arts and humanities that illuminate the plays on its stage. Great Lakes Theater is one of only a handful of American theaters that have stayed the course as a classic theater. As GLT approaches a decade in its permanent home at the Hanna Theatre, the company reaffirms its belief in the power of partnership, its determination to make this community a better place in which to live, and its commitment to ensure the legacy of classic theater in Cleveland.

NEWS & NOTES Road Trip
at Playhouse Square
This month, the artists, technicians, sets, costumes and props from our recent productions of Misery and Macbeth begin a 2,000-mile journey. They’re headed west to Boise, Idaho, to commence the 42nd season of Idaho Shakespeare Festival — our cross-country producing partner since 2002. The team will make the trip back to Cleveland this fall with two brand-new productions in tow to open our 57th year — Mamma Mia! and Pride and Prejudice — after successful Boise runs. Join us in wishing the entire company safe travels and Mountain Time Zone standing ovations in the meantime.

Classics in Classrooms
Matchmakers
This fall, our artistic and executive directors will lead guests on a trip across the Atlantic for Great Lakes Theater’s London and Bath Theater Tour! Attending eight plays — including Company featuring Patti LuPone — while experienc ing fine dining and exclusive tours, this trip promises to create memories for both new and veteran tour guests. The full tour runs October 26 through November 4, with a half-tour option through October 30. For more information or to secure your spot, email sreed@greatlakestheater.org.
Throughout our 2017–18 season, Great Lakes Theater’s acclaimed School Residency Program — comprised of eight actor-teachers — visited over 15,000 students, at approximately 100 schools, in 15 counties, to share the pleasure, power and relevance of classic literature and performance. In addition to our core programming of over a dozen lesson plans for students in K–12, we are continually developing engag ing lesson plans that exceed Ohio’s Learning Standards, such as our new The Taming of the Shrew residency that will connect students to our production next spring — right in their classrooms!
Bob and Emily have been committed to the classics at Great Lakes Theater for over a decade. Over the last several years, Bob’s former employer Lubrizol joined him in his commitment by matching a portion of his family’s charitable gift. Many companies, organizations and foundations match employee charitable contri butions. Some companies, like Lubrizol, will even match gifts for retired employees. With the help of Lubrizol, Bob and Emily made the most of their charitable giving and helped connect over 100,000 students and adults to the classics this season.

SPOTLIGHT ON BEEHIVE
B
at Playhouse Square
eehive, the hairstyle, was created by hairdresser Margaret Vinci Heldt in Elmhurst, Illinois, primarily as a way to make a woman look taller. “Everybody wanted the beehive, even women with real, real short hair,” she said. “They looked more like anthills than a beehive, then they got bigger and bigger and became hornets’ nests.” Heldt did not name the hairstyle she invented. For the final touch in her original design, she added a bee-shaped hat pin, and from that, a reporter for the magazine Modern Beauty Shop exclaimed, “it looks just like a beehive!” The beehive was an instant success. Women were already in love with the big-hair trend, thanks to the bouffant, and the longer-lasting beehive was a timesaver. Made popular by The Ronettes and The B-52s, the beehive hairstyle came to be seen as a reminder of a simpler, sweeter time in American history, music and pop culture. Beehive, the musical, sprang from the head of Larry Gallagher, a booking agent who signed musical acts for East Coast clubs. Gallagher decided to assemble his own show in the spring of 1985. He bought 150 albums of ’60s music, and after choosing songs that he judged to best represent the spirit of the decade, he spent three weeks contacting record labels to get the rights to the music. Once secured, Gallagher created a musical revue running chronologically, from beehive hairdos and long skirts to free-flowing hair and hippie fashions. Told from the perspective of six young women coming of age in this turbulent decade, the music shifts dramatically, from early girl groups (The Chiffons, The Shirelles, The Supremes) to the solo work of Janis Joplin, Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin. The women of Beehive document the changes that America underwent during the ’60s, from the earliest part of the decade when fun, innocent tunes were the order of the day (“The Name Game,” “One Fine Day,” “Judy’s Turn to Cry,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”) to the mid-’60s, when unrest was in the air (“You Don’t Own Me,” “To Sir, With Love”) and finally to the era of women discovering their own empowerment (“Natural Woman,” “Cry Baby,” “Me and Bobby McGee”). When asked if his show would ever move to Broadway, Gallagher said that such a move would destroy the show’s intimacy. “It’s important for the audience to sit back, have a drink and sing with the cast while their lives are being relived on the stage,” he shared. We hope you do just that at today’s performance. Matthew Webb Music Director, Beehive – The 60s Musical

In 2002, Great Lakes Theater (Cleveland, Ohio) and Idaho Shakespeare Festival (Boise, Idaho) conceived a unique, strategic producing alliance designed to maximize return on organizational investments, increase production efficiencies, create long term work opportunities for artists and share best practices. In 2010, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival (Incline Village, Nevada) joined the collaborative — further contributing to the momentum of the revolutionary producing prototype's success. The long term results have been remarkable. The alliance's three independent, 501c3 regional theaters have shared over 50 jointly-created productions — each featuring long term, multi-city employment opportunities for artistic company members. This revolutionary producing model has realized its vision and exceeded expectations while simultaneously resulting in notable audience growth for each company.

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE HISTORY Hanna Theatre Trivia Since its opening in 1921, the Hanna Theatre has been the site of two world premieres: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Me and Juliette in 1953 and, in 1974, Odyssey by Michel Legrand starring Yul Brynner. Another first occurred in 1937, when Gilbert and Sullivan’s first Cleveland-staged opera was performed at the Hanna by the D’Oyly Carte Company from London.
The GE Chandelier
A Change in History? One of many fascinating items to be found in the book Playhouse Square: An Entertaining History deals with the infamous John Wilkes Booth. Booth performed locally at the old Academy of Music, which was one of the first drama schools in the country and was located at 1371 W. 6th Street. It was at that Cleveland Academy where he would play his last role prior to performing at Washington D.C.’s Ford Theatre where he would assassinate President Lincoln. (Might history have been changed if the Academy had held over Booth’s play for an extended run?)
Patterns in Plaster As you walk through the theaters, you may notice various patterns within the plaster decoration. Common are dentil, lamb tongue, rope and rosettes. Other patterns you may see have been associated with certain meanings since they were first used hundreds or even thousands of years ago, such as the acanthus leaf (immortality), egg and dart (life and death), and the palm leaf, first used in ancient Egypt as a reference to the Nile River. In the KeyBank
What Would It Cost to Build Them Today? Even though the Connor Palace is not the largest of the Playhouse Square venues, it was the most costly to build ($3.5 million) by the time it premiered on Nov. 6, 1922. The largest theater, the State, (opened Feb. 5, 1921) was built at a cost of $2 million; the Ohio (Feb. 14, 1921) also cost $2 million, and the Allen’s costs totaled $1.9 million when it opened April 1, 1921. (Exact building costs for the Hanna Theatre — which opened March 28, 1921 — have yet to be uncovered.)
Going Green While red is the color most often associated with theaters, Playhouse Square is making efforts to go “green.” You will find receptacles for recycling paper, plastic and cans, along with those designated specifically for the program you’re currently reading, throughout the complex. Lighting fixtures are being switched to LED for increased energy efficiency. And the Playhouse Square administrative office is making strides towards going paperless.

Officially the world’s largest outdoor chandelier, the 20-foot tall GE Chandelier is adorned with 4200 crystals. To find out how it was made, visit the Playhouse Square YouTube channel.
State Theatre, if you look closely and carefully, you can find ox skulls, which were believed to offer protection from natural elements. And throughout the theaters, you will find griffins, mythical creatures thought of as guardians.
A Phoenix from the Ashes In 1964, the Ohio Theatre lobby and auditorium were destroyed by fire. When the fledgling Playhouse Square organization restored the spaces in 1982, funding and time constraints made it possible only for the auditorium to be fully restored. Thanks to a gift from the George Gund Foundation, the lobby was re-created in its original splendor in 2016. You can watch a documentary about the project, “Restoring the Legacy,” on Playhouse Square’s YouTube channel.
