n our ongoing mission to book outstanding shows and entertainment, advance arts education and manage our vibrant theater district, PlayhouseSquare wears many hats. One of those frequently worn is that of host. Not only are we again hosting the 4th annual International Children’s Festival May 6–11 (presented by Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital), but at this time of year, we happily play host to many area high school and college graduations. In fact, more than 4,000 students will be accepting diplomas on our stages this year. It’s truly a rite of passage that will elicit fond memories of PlayhouseSquare for these graduates far into the future. Then in August, we switch our attention from stage to screen, hosting a month of classic films and cartoons on the largest non-IMAX screen in Ohio as we present the 16th annual Cinema at the Square. And, although we welcome more than one million guests for a variety of entertainment genres throughout the year, our added hosting duties include 200-plus organizations and individuals who take advantage of our unique venues to commemorate milestone events, train employees, award their champions, launch products and initiatives, celebrate achievements and exchange wedding vows. (The historic grand staircase of the Palace Theatre is one of the most-requested Cleveland sites for glamorous wedding party photos.) To this end, I am pleased to announce that PlayhouseSquare was recently honored as Corporate Meeting Venue of the Year at the Connectors’ Choice Awards sponsored by CBC Magazine. Such private and corporate event hosting is only one of the many ways we serve our community. PlayhouseSquare

The Rise and Fall of PlayhouseSquare Between February 1921 and November 1922, five opulent theaters opened along the Euclid Avenue – the Allen, Hanna, Ohio, State and Palace. Dubbed Playhouse Square, the theaters presented history’s most iconic performers in legitimate theater, vaudeville and silent movies while acting as a tremendous source of civic pride. Over the years, suburban flight and the rise of television sent PlayhouseSquare into a death spiral throughout the 1950s and 1960s. By July 1969, all four theaters had closed. Neglect and vandalism ensued. In 1970, a bold plan from a local not-for-profit civic group called the Playhouse Square Association, led by a group of visionaries, launched a vigorous grass-roots campaign to save the theaters.

Rescue and Rebirth The threatened razing of the Ohio and State in 1972 galvanized community leaders, including politicians, activists, funders, businessmen, and the Junior League, who obtained a stay of execution. In succeeding years, limited repair and renovation allowed for sporadic staging of productions as money was raised for complete restoration. An expected three-week run of the musical revue Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris opened in the State Theatre lobby in 1973. So beloved, it played for two years. Bolstered by such artistic successes, the preservationists continued to stave off demolition, built community support, assembled a professional management team and raised $40 million in a spirit of public/private partnership. Restoration began with the July 1982 reopening of the Ohio Theatre. By the end of the 1980s, the curtain had risen again in both the State and Palace. The Allen (1997), the Idea Center (2005), and the Hanna (2008) would later take their place alongside the other jewels in PlayhouseSquare’s crown.

Today and Tomorrow

Today, PlayhouseSquare has 10 bustling performing spaces, including the recent reconfiguration of the Allen Theatre to welcome Cleveland Play House and the Department of Theatre and Dance and Visual Arts Programs of Cleveland State University as new resident companies. These ten spaces comprise the world’s largest theater restoration project and make PlayhouseSquare the largest performing arts center in the country outside of New York, with one million guests per year. And still only a few years old, the addition of the renovated Idea Center building provides classroom, studio and theater space as the exclusive home for community engagement and education performances, workshops and classes. PlayhouseSquare’s unique business model—using the arts as an economic engine for the area—has spurred a great deal of development in the PlayhouseSquare District. The performing arts center, once torn, tattered and ready for demolition, now owns, manages and leases over one million feet of real estate within PlayhouseSquare and manages another one million feet outside of the District, along with the co-development of the Wyndham Hotel. And just like the visionaries who helped to restore PlayhouseSquare to its original opulence, the work is not yet done. The future will welcome additional area development and beautification, dining and housing, and a continued commitment to arts education and a wide array of live entertainment. BROADWAY NEWS... In a life-imitates-art move, Toledo, OH native Crystal Bowersox has been cast to portray the legendary Patsy Cline on Broadway this July in Always…Patsy Cline. Cline was discovered on “The Arthur Godfrey Show,” the #1 talent TV show of its day. Likewise, Bowersox came to fame as a runner-up on “American Idol,” today’s #1 TV talent program. Oscar and Emmy nominee Annette O’Toole also stars.

It might be putting the horse before the cart, but the “Theme from Stephen Ward” (the still-in-theworks Andrew Lloyd Webber musical) was recently released for download even though the musical won’t debut in London until sometime in 2014! Stephen Ward is a musical about British Parliament’s famous Profumo Affair which scandalized Parliament. The story is from the perspective of Dr. Stephen Ward, a society osteopath at the scandal’s center.

If you’ve seen our historic 1927 refurbished Kimball organ played in the Palace Theatre (as it will be prior to each of the films during August’s annual Cinema at the Square), you might wonder “where are the pipes that produce that glorious sound?” Usually invisible to Palace audiences, the 13 sets of pipes are located behind grids on either side of the stage. When the organ is about to be played, the pipe room’s lights are turned on, allowing the audience to see the giant organ pipe valves open and close through latticed grills. More than an organ, the Kimball includes a xylophone, Glockenspiel, celesta, complete set of drums and many cymbals.

JUMP BACK TWO SPACES On February 23, PlayhouseSquare Partners hosted the 22nd annual Jump Back Ball – Jump Back Two Spaces. A play on classic board games, this year’s party featured live music by SWAGG and Velvet Shake, a gourmet Sammy’s buffet, multiple open bars, and life-sized board game décor and activities. VIP guests enjoyed a pre-party catered by awardwinning chef Jonathon Sawyer (The Greenhouse Tavern, Noodlecat) who also provided on-site cooking demos. The sold-out event, which broke the Jump Back Ball ticket sales record by selling-out in a matter of weeks, raised more than $135,000 in support of PlayhouseSquare’s not-forprofit mission. layhouseSquare is a community-based not-for-profit organization which depends upon philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Proceeds from ticket sales alone do not sustain the organization, therefore more than $4 million dollars must be raised annually to help PlayhouseSquare meet its mission of operating and maintaining the historic theaters, expanding arts education outreach, and investing in the community through area development. The following is a list of charitable opportunities which support PlayhouseSquare. There are many stages of giving available based on your desired level of support. We express our gratitude for all donations received.

Donor Circle Donor Circle is a membership program for individuals who give an annual gift of $600 or more. Donor Circle members receive advance access to tickets, prime seating for Broadway and other performances, a personal ticket concierge and, at select giving levels, access to the private RJF Presidents’ Club for dinner and bar service, plus reserved parking in the PlayhouseSquare garage.

Corporate Giving

Corporate donations provide PlayhouseSquare with valuable financial support. Companies making

annual gifts of $1200 or more receive community recognition, client entertainment and employee rewards. As an added incentive, Eaton Corporation has pledged to match two-to-one any new or increased corporate gifts. Eaton Corporation’s Challenge Grant will help raise more than $400,000 to support PlayhouseSquare’s education initiatives.

Foundation Support Corporate, community and family foundations and government agencies like the Ohio Arts Council and Cuyahoga County Arts and Culture provide PlayhouseSquare with annual operating support and funding for education programs.

Pals

Friends is a membership program for individuals who give an annual gift of $50 to $599. Members receive advance access to tickets, discounts, special recognition and invitations to private events throughout the year.

Pals is a way for children ages 2-12 to form a special connection with PlayhouseSquare. At the same time, they learn about the importance of giving back to their community. Pals and their grown-ups have access to priority ticketing and free parking in the PlayhouseSquare garage for select family performances as well as special pre- and post-show events. Family memberships are available for $50 and $75 per year.

Partners Partners is the official young professionals group of PlayhouseSquare. Members enjoy unique opportunities to network, volunteer and socialize in one of the most beautiful locations in downtown Cleveland. Young professionals can join Partners for as little as $50 per year.

Endowment and Planned Giving Individuals and families that have declared their intention to include PlayhouseSquare in their estate plans, whether by will, trust or life income arrangement, are recognized through The Muse Society. No minimum is required to participate. Requests for anonymity are respected.

rom Shakespeare’s “Seven Ages of Man” to your favorite one-armed bandit, the number “7” seems to carry with it significance and good fortune. For us, the serendipity associated with that number began in 2007. Hope was in the air in June of that year, as our Convention and Visitors Bureau announced that Positively Cleveland would open a 3500-square-foot Visitors Center. Its prominent location (in the corner window of the abandoned Higbee building on Public Square) renewed the prospects for a second life for this storied edifice. In July, an adaptation of the quirky musical Xanadu opened at New York’s Helen Hayes Theatre. The musical’s choreographer, Dan Knechtges, skated off with his first Tony nomination for his work with this tongue-in-cheek romp at Mt. Olympus. His talent was rapidly catching the attention of the Broadway gurus. Also that month, Central Park was the location of a three-day salute to the 40th Anniversary of HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical. Steel Burkhardt, a recent graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College, was making his New York debut as a member of the Tribe. He went on to assume the lead as Berger in London, the U.S. tour and the Broadway return engagement. Meanwhile, back on the north coast, we all held great expectations that September as the announcement of a reimagined vision for the Hanna Theatre was unveiled. Great Lakes Theater (Festival at the time) and PlayhouseSquare had ambitions of creating what was described as an architectural and social experiment. The plan for a seating configuration that combined bar stools and banquettes with traditional row seating was trailblazing. Now, fast-forward to the present, as those disparate events from the past fuse their destinies to our co-production of Guys and Dolls. While our producing team sat in the conference room at Great Lakes Theater (GLT), bantering about titles for our joint production, Cleveland’s Horseshoe Casino was busy putting the finishing touches in place for their highly lauded opening. Under consideration in our discussions were new and revived book musicals, plays and cabaret-style presentations. Although there were many ideas, nothing rose to the top—at first. I have to admit, this process seems like it would be easy and immediate. It is a bit like going to a restaurant which has a long, extended menu. For me, I mull over the selections as though I am panning for gold… searching for that special nugget for dinner. I keep turning the pages until something strikes me as a tasty idea. Finally, Sara Bruner, the Artistic Associate for GLT, suggested we consider the quintessential classic musical framed around gambling—Guys and Dolls. It was either our collective adrenaline rush or a latent aftershock from the previously discussed events of 2007, but the earth moved under our feet as we danced with joy. What a terrific idea! The opportunity to hear a company of 30+ singers and musicians deliver Frank Loesser’s score in the intimacy of the now renovated and fully functioning Hanna would be a magical experience. “7.” As luck would have it, Dan Knetchtges was available. Although he had grown up attending shows at PlayhouseSquare with his family, this graduate of Grafton’s Midview High School and Otterbein College had jetted off to New York, before having the chance to work here. “7.” The final piece of the puzzle was casting. We held several auditions for principal roles in Cleveland and New York. Happily, those roles are filled with our first choices. However, the part of Sky Masterson proved exceedingly difficult. After a literal coast-to-coast search, Steel Burkhardt became available. And we snagged him. “7.” We are delighted to share our jackpot with you.

n behalf of the artists, staff, and Board of Trustees of Great Lakes Theater, welcome to our production of Guys and Dolls, the final offering of our 51st Season! To all our new friends, joining us as part of our continuing partnership with PlayhouseSquare and the KeyBank Broadway Series, we say thank you for the opportunity to share our work and all that’s best about PlayhouseSquare – in a word, collaboration! And to those in the audience who have been supporting “Cleveland’s Classic Theater” for decades, welcome back to the Hanna Theatre for what promises to be a spectacular production of Frank Loesser’s masterpiece, Guys and Dolls.

Our mission, “to bring the pleasure, power, and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience,” guides our mainstage productions as well as our educational programming, in the belief that theater holds the capacity to illuminate truth and enduring values, celebrate and challenge human nature and actions, and provide our student audiences a glimpse of a broader world, and the wellspring of learning made possible through the arts. It is a joy to work, once again, with Art Falco, Gina Vernaci, David Greene, and the great team at PlayhouseSquare; our production of Guys and Dolls simply would not have been possible without their generous support and partnership. It is especially gratifying to welcome Cleveland native Dan Knechtges as director and choreographer of Guys and Dolls to the Great Lakes Theater/PlayhouseSquare family. Dan has established himself as one of the leading artists in the American theater; working regularly on Broadway. He is a Tony Award nominee whose most recent credits include Sondheim on Sondheim Lysistrata Jones, Xanadu, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, among many others.

In 1982, Great Lakes Theater became the first resident theater company to make its home at PlayhouseSquare as part of the world’s largest theater renovation project. In our 31 year history as residents of PlayhouseSquare, fortune has shined on our company through a succession of extraordinary leaders, dedicated board members, and a community of support undaunted by the challenges of creating and sustaining the artistic and educational mission of Great Lakes Theater. Since the successful completion of our $20 million Re-Imagine a Classic Campaign in 2008, we have made our home in the newly renovated Hanna Theatre while continuing to produce our holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, in the Ohio Theatre. from the Director

uys and Dolls is regarded by almost everyone in the theater community as one of the greatest musical comedies ever written. Frank Loesser, Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling created a show that audiences the world-over continue to ﬂock to. Everyone who I spoke to about the show always said the same thing — “I love that show!” I am no exception and I like to think that I have many similar connections to Damon Runyon who wrote the original stories that this musical is based upon.

Damon Runyon was born on Oct. 4, 1880 in Manhattan, Kansas. His various jobs included newspaper journalism, organizing a minor league baseball team and a stint in the army. He moved to New York at the relatively late age of 30 and fell in love with the city. Ironically, he made his fame and fortune writing short stories about Broadway low-lifes and these stories and characters were adapted into the musical Guys and Dolls - most notably, the short story The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown. As one reads these stories, the humanity and humor that reverberate through these characters comes rushing off the page. Runyon was writing for an audience that was in the midst of the Great Depression and needed relief. Does this sound relevant or what? He delivered in droves. As with the musical, Guys and Dolls, you believe that these characters are REAL. I too left the Midwest to go to New York, partly to start a career in theatre, but also because I had fallen in love with a city that I thought existed in popular media ... which of course includes Guys and Dolls. My intro to the show came when I was in high school and was in the chorus at Elyria Summer Theatre. I had yet to visit New York by that point, but somehow I wanted to live in a city where a chorus girl talked like a dame and a gangster spoke like a philosophy student. Did I know that this did not exist? I’m sure I did, but the power of the world that Damon Runyon had created was overwhelming. So sue me! When researching the show I came across this quote from the author, James Breslin, “Damon Runyon invented the Broadway of Guys and Dolls and the Roaring Twenties, neither of which existed, but whose names and phrases became part of theater history and the American language.” I was vindicated! 20 years since moving, I am honored to return to my hometown and celebrate the two cities that mean the most in my life — New York and Cleveland.

Charles holds a unique position in the American theater as producing artistic director of three independently operated, professional theater companies: Great Lakes Theater in Cleveland, Ohio (since 2002), Idaho Shakespeare Festival in Boise, Idaho (since 1991) and Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival in Lake Tahoe, Nevada (since 2010). His appointments have resulted in a dynamic and groundbreaking producing model for the companies, in which 45 plays have been shared since 2002. In 2009, Charles was honored to receive recognition for his leadership by the Cleveland Arts Prize as a recipient of the Martha Joseph Award. Other awards include The Mayor’s and Governor’s awards for Excellence in the Arts, in Boise, Idaho. From 1988 to 1992, he held the position of artistic director at the Sierra Repertory Theatre in California. He has also worked with The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, the Milwaukee and Missouri repertory theaters, Actor’s Theatre of Phoenix and the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival. In addition to his work with the companies in

Ohio, Idaho and Nevada, Charles is active within the community. He has served as a member of the strategic planning committee for the Morrison Center, as producer of the FUNDSY Award Gala (’96, ’98 and 2000), and as producer of the 1996 Idaho Governor’s Awards in the Arts. Charles has served on the board of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Downtown Rotary Club. He received his B.A. from the University of the Pacific and Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, San Diego. Along with his wife, Lidia, and 17-year-old daughter, Alexa, Charles resides in Boise, Cleveland and Lake Tahoe –– a feat that is only possible because of the incredible love and support of his family, and the generous communities he serves!

Dan not only has worked in the theater world but also has worked on several operas and concerts. Dan’s concert dance premiere was for BalletMet’s JazzMoves choreographing the finale, Mowtown Moves with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Dan’s choreography can be seen in the Todd Solondz’s movie Palindromes, Dark Horse, White Collar on USA Network, The 2011 TV Land Awards with Liza Minnelli, and in Fatboy Slim’s music video “It’s a Wonderful Night,” which reached No. 1 in the U.K. He has also taught dance at numerous institutions and often does master classes all over the country. THE AUTHORS Abe Burrows Co-writer, Guys and Dolls After studying to be a doctor and an accountant, Abe Burrows had a career in sales before becoming a successful radio scriptwriter and writer/ performer of musical parody numbers. His first Broadway libretto was Guys and Dolls, co-written with Jo Swerling, with a score by Frank Loesser. Among the musicals for which he provided librettos are Make A Wish, Can-Can and Silk Stockings (both with scores by Cole Porter), Say, Darling, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (which he also directed; score by Frank Loesser). His non-musical plays include Cactus Flower (wrote and directed) and Forty Carats (directed). Frank Loesser Music and Lyrics, Guys and Dolls One of America’s great composer/lyricists, Frank Loesser began his songwriting career during the Depression as a lyricist, contributing songs to Broadway revues and nightclub acts. His work with composer Irving Actman in the 1936 revue The Illustrator’s Show led to a songwriting contract in Hollywood, where he spent the next 11 years working with such composers as Burton Lane, Jule Styne, Arthur Schwartz and Hoagy Carmichael. Some of his film songs from that period include “Two Sleepy People,” “Jingle Jangle Jingle” and “I Don’t Want To Walk Without You.”

The first song for which Loesser wrote both words and music was “Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition,” written during his World War II service. His Hollywood work after the war included the hit songs “Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year,” “A Slow Boat To China” and the 1949 Oscar-winning song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” In 1948, Loesser was approached by fledgling Broadway producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to George Abbott’s libretto for an adaptation of the classic Brandon Thomas play Charley’s Aunt. The new musical, which starred Ray Bolger, was called Where’s Charley? and was a hit. This led to Loesser’s next show, the hugely influential and successful Guys and Dolls in 1950, also produced by Feuer and Martin, with a script by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. In 1956, Loesser wrote the libretto, music and lyrics for his next show, The Most Happy Fella, adapted from Sidney

Howard’s play, They Knew What They Wanted. This impressive score contains over 30 musical numbers and makes extensive use of operatic techniques and forms, including recitative, arias, duets, trios and choral numbers. In 1960, he provided the score and was co-librettist for Greenwillow. In 1961, Loesser wrote the score for the Pulitzer Prize-winning How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. His last show, Pleasures and Palaces, closed in 1965 during outof-town try-outs. Jo Swerling Co-writer, Guys and Dolls Born in Russia in 1897, Jo Swerling was a playwright, screenwriter and vaudeville sketch writer. Mr. Swerling’s long career began as a reporter and feature writer in New York and Chicago.
