ver wonder how it all works together … how the not-for-profit PlayhouseSquare utilizes the arts as the catalyst for meaningful change in our community?   Entertainment – While we retain just a small portion of the proceeds from ticket sales, our 1 million annual guests spur economic growth for local downtown businesses.   Arts Education – A lifetime of inspirational access to the performing arts – from youth to adult – is at our core. This investment builds new audiences and creates a more enriched and diverse community for the future.   Area Development – A thriving neighborhood acts as an economic engine that attracts businesses, residents, tourists and visitors to converge in this exciting destination to work, play or live.   Not-for-Profit – Needing to raise more than $4 million annually to support our mission, we blend collaborative partnerships, innovative leadership, and sound fiscal management to ensure that donations are stewarded wisely for the maximum community benefit.

ommunity Engagement and Education continues to be an integral part of the PlayhouseSquare not-for-profit mission. We realize the energy and commitment necessary to make a lasting difference in our community, which is why we have been so gratified to host events like the International Showcase of Performing Arts for Youth, as well as our Second Annual International Children’s Festival, which entertained more than 15,000 for an entire week this month. The captivating performances by these artists from around the globe, along with interactive workshops and activities, provided area children with enriching and unique live theater experiences. The Festival was a product of the imagination, passion and dedication of Colleen Porter, our Vice President of Community Engagement & Education. But sadly, and much too soon, our community recently lost Colleen after a battle with cancer. She joined PlayhouseSquare in 2001 and built her department into a force for arts education and advocacy locally, regionally and internationally. With Colleen’s unwavering focus and vision, we were able to grow the size of our Partners in Performance program (PIP) from just one participating district to 32. Now serving more than 14,000 children, PIP partners PlayhouseSquare with school districts to introduce students to live performing arts and provides support for teachers to integrate the arts into classroom curriculum. Because of her deep belief that the arts can change and greatly affect lives, Colleen served on boards and committees ranging from the local to the international — all with the notion that collaboration, not repetition, was the way to strengthen the arts education community. And she taught us all at PlayhouseSquare that it was our civic duty to provide arts programming to students of all ages, as well as the teaching community, to replace what had been lost and sorely missed in our schools. With her service to arts education, Colleen had accomplishments too numerous to mention and too impactful to measure, and she will be greatly missed by her PlayhouseSquare family and others who worked alongside her. PlayhouseSquare commits $1 million in fundraising each year to support our educational mission and we remain committed to doing so. Thanks to the generosity of so many, we are proud to continue Colleen’s vision and continue the investment in our children, community and future, engaging and inspiring all audiences to become lifelong learners.

Respectfully,

our story

PlayhouseSquare

The Rise and Fall of PlayhouseSquare Between February 1921 and November 1922, five opulent theaters opened along the Euclid Avenue – the Allen, Hanna, Ohio, State and Palace. Dubbed Playhouse Square, the theaters presented history’s most iconic performers in legitimate theater, vaudeville and silent movies while acting as a tremendous source of civic pride. Over the years, suburban flight and the rise of television sent PlayhouseSquare into a death spiral throughout the 1950s and 1960s. By July 1969, all four theaters had closed. Neglect and vandalism ensued. In 1970, a bold plan from a local not-for-profit civic group called the Playhouse Square Association launched a vigorous grass-roots campaign to save the theaters.

Rescue and Rebirth The threatened razing of the Ohio and State in 1972 galvanized community leaders, who obtained a stay of execution. In succeeding years, limited repair and renovation allowed for sporadic staging of productions as money was raised for complete restoration. An expected three-week run of the musical revue Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris opened in the State Theatre lobby in 1973. So beloved, it played for two years. Bolstered by such artistic successes, the preservationists continued to stave off demolition, built community support, assembled a professional management team and raised $40 million in a spirit of public/private partnership. Restoration began with the July 1982 reopening of the Ohio Theatre. By the end of the 1980s, the curtain had risen again in both the State and Palace. The Allen (1997), the Idea Center (2005), and the Hanna (2008) would later take their place alongside the other jewels in PlayhouseSquare’s crown.

Today and Tomorrow

8

Today, PlayhouseSquare has 10 bustling performing spaces, including the recent reconfiguration of the Allen Theatre to welcome Cleveland Play House and the Department of Theatre and Dance and Visual Arts Programs of Cleveland State University as new resident companies. These ten spaces comprise the world’s largest theater restoration project and make PlayhouseSquare the largest performing arts center in the country outside of New York, with one million guests per year. And still only a few years old, the addition of the renovated Idea Center building provides classroom, studio and theater space as the exclusive home for community engagement and education performances, workshops and classes. PlayhouseSquare’s unique business model—using the arts as an economic engine for the area—has spurred a great deal of development in the PlayhouseSquare District. The performing arts center, once torn, tattered and ready for demolition, now owns, manages and leases over one million feet of real estate within PlayhouseSquare and manages another one million feet outside of the District, along with the co-development of the Wyndham Hotel. And just like the visionaries who helped to restore PlayhouseSquare to its original opulence, the work is not yet done. The future will welcome additional area development and beautification, dining and housing, and a continued commitment to arts education and a wide array of live entertainment. PlayhouseSquare is a hometown success story and it belongs to you, our donors, sponsors, audience members and community. Please discover more and view our Emmy Award winning mini-film, More Than Just a Show at playhousequare.org/ourstory and consider making a gift that supports our efforts to bring today into tomorrow.

Great Lakes Theater

he mission of Great Lakes Theater, through its main stage productions and its education programs, is to bring the pleasure, power and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience. Since the company’s inception in 1962, programming has been rooted in Shakespeare, but Great Lakes commitment to great plays spans the breadth of all cultures, forms of theater and time periods –– including the 20th century –– and provides for the occasional mounting of new works that complement the classical repertoire. Classic theater holds the Great Lakes Theater’s 2012 spring production of The Mousetrap (Photo by capacity to illuminate truth and Roger Mastroianni) enduring values, celebrate and challenge human nature and actions, revel in eloquent language, preserve the traditions of diverse cultures and generate communal spirit. On its main stage and through its education programs, GLT seeks to create visceral, immediate experiences for participants, asserting theater’s historic role as a vehicle for advancing the common good and helping people make the joyful and meaningful connections between classic plays and their own lives. The company’s commitment to classic theater is magnified in the educational programs that surround its productions. here are some things we expect to see when coming to a show at PlayhouseSquare: the bright lights of the marquees, the beautiful theaters and lobbies, and of course, the RedCoat volunteers. These 1,500 plus dedicated men and women are an integral piece of the PlayhouseSquare puzzle, and it’s hard to imagine coming to a show without seeing their trademark red blazers. Although their commitment to making the theatergoer’s experience the best it can be hasn’t changed since the theaters first opened in the 1920s, their uniforms surely have. In the early days of PlayhouseSquare, you would have spotted a volunteer by their signature button-up blouse and dark jacket. Today we can easily pick out a volunteer by the signature red blazer, but their real trademark all along has been helping people enjoy their experiences at PlayhouseSquare.

Forever Young

Celebrating 50 Seasons of Great classic theater At a time when the average lifespan of an American theater is seven years, Great Lakes Theater has thrived for fifty. The theater’s enduring legacy is a testimony to the aspirations and commitments of countless people who have made contributions to a theater dedicated to the classics that has perched for five decades on the edge of America’s north coast. On the occasion of our Golden Anniversary, we are proud to thank all of the individuals that have given generously of their time, shared their talent, provided support or bought a ticket to a Great Lakes Theater performance over the past half century. We’re extremely grateful and we look forward to the next exciting fifty years!

DID YOU KNOW? Over the past five decades… We have connected over 4 million adults and students to the classics. Over 9,000 artists and artisans have been employed by Great Lakes Theater. We have staged over 300 productions. Over 2,000 generous members of the northeast Ohio community have served on our company’s Board of Trustees. Our School Residency Program has had a presence in northern Ohio schools for 30 consecutive years – and, today, impacts the lives of 16,000 students in 100 schools annually. Our annual operating budget has grown from $50K in 1962 to $3.6M today.

BROADWAY NEWS... Kings of Rock and Horror, John Mellancamp and Stephen King, celebrated the world premiere of their “rock & blues” ghost story, Ghosts Brothers of Darkland County at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre this month. With music and lyrics by Mellancamp and the book by King, this Southern gothic musical centers around mystery, tragedy and phantoms. And…more rockers tackling Broadway, as Canadian rock group Barenaked Ladies are writing a musical adaptation of the 1978 frat house comedy Animal House, which Tony winner Casey Nicholaw will direct. Disney’s The Lion King just entered into Broadway’s annals as its sixth-longest running show to date.

HOT BROADWAY SHOWS! HOT TICKETS! With the exciting shows of the 2012-2013 KeyBank Broadway Series – The Book of Mormon; Sister Act; War Horse; Disney’s Beauty and the Beast; Anything Goes; Priscilla Queen of the Desert; Guys and Dolls – newly announced, remember that becoming a PlayhouseSquare Season Ticket Holder or a Donor are always the only ways you are absolutely assured of tickets to shows that may sell out. Visit playhousesquare.org to learn more information on being part of this hot new season as a season ticket holder or becoming a tax-deductible donor.

DON'T BE SCALPED! We can’t seem to say this enough…the only authorized places to purchase PlayhouseSquare tickets are: online at playhousesquare. org (NOT any other website that might say “State Theatre” or “Palace Theatre”); by phone at 216-241-6000; or at our Ticket Office. A recent guest learned this the hard way, buying concert tickets (on a scalper website) at twice the face value, paying to have them Fed Exed to his home, only to find he was seated in mid-balcony rather than his expected orchestra location. Not only can tickets be printed from home off our official website, you may now also visit our mobile-friendly website and buy tickets via your Smart Phone!

TAKE A TOUR / MEET THE AUTHORS AT OHIOANA EVENT

NEW CHAIRS FOR THE OHIO

18

Having a chair reupholstered at your house? Consider our house – the Ohio Theatre to be exact – where this summer we close the venue to remove seats for new cushions and custom red velvet upholstery to match the venue’s curtains. Wood backs and arms will be stained teak, with the seat frames painted red and trimmed in gold. Folding mechanisms will be rebuilt with new springs and bearings. The Ohio seat restoration is a capital project with a cost estimated at $200,000. While the seats are removed, the floor will also be repainted to enhance the seat color scheme. We are excited for this major theater improvement, made possible by the generous support of donors who help to fund PlayhouseSquare’s operating costs and ongoing improvements through annual and endowed gifts.

The Ohioana Library Association, a nonprofit dedicated to honoring Ohio writers, joins PlayhouseSquare September 8th for “The Curtain Rises on PlayhouseSquare: A Drama of Rescue and Restoration.” Held at PlayhouseSquare from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the event will feature a special backstage tour of the theaters, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Ohio Magazine senior editor Linda Feagler, with Ohio authors John Vacha (Showtime in Cleveland) and Jeannie Emser Schultz, (PlayhouseSquare: An Entertaining History). Cost (which includes a copy of Showtime in Cleveland) is $35 for Ohioana members; $40 for nonmembers. For information or to register, call Ohioana Library at (614) 4663831 or visit ohioana.org.

WE’LL HAVE THE TIME OF OUR LIVES The 2012 Broadway Summer Camp for teens will feature master classes with cast and crew members from MAMMA MIA! Be prepared to act, dance, sing and have the time of your life! Registration includes a ticket to a performance of MAMMA MIA! at PlayhouseSquare. P

layhouseSquare is a community-based not-for-profit organization which depends upon philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Proceeds from ticket sales alone do not sustain the organization, therefore more than $4 million dollars must be raised annually to help PlayhouseSquare meet its mission of operating and maintaining the historic theaters, expanding arts education outreach, and investing in the community through area development. The following is a list of charitable opportunities which support PlayhouseSquare. There are many stages of giving available based on your desired level of support. We express our gratitude for all donations received.

Donor Circle Donor Circle is a membership program for individuals who give an annual gift of $600 or more. Donor Circle members receive advance access to tickets, prime seating for Broadway and other performances, a personal ticket concierge and, at select giving levels, access to the private RJF Presidents’ Club for dinner and bar service, plus reserved parking in the PlayhouseSquare garage.

Corporate Giving

©2011 California Closet Company, Inc. All rights reserved. Franchises independently owned and operated.

Corporate donations provide PlayhouseSquare with valuable financial support. Companies making

annual gifts of $1200 or more receive community recognition, client entertainment and employee rewards. As an added incentive, Eaton Corporation has pledged to match two-to-one any new or increased corporate gifts. Eaton Corporation’s Challenge Grant will help raise more than $400,000 to support PlayhouseSquare’s education initiatives.

Foundation Support Corporate, community and family foundations and government agencies like the Ohio Arts Council and Cuyahoga County Arts and Culture provide PlayhouseSquare with annual operating support and funding for education programs.

Friends is a membership program for individuals who give an annual gift of $50 to $599. Members receive advance access to tickets, discounts, special recognition and invitations to private events throughout the year.

Pals is a way for children ages 2-12 to form a special connection with PlayhouseSquare. At the same time, they learn about the importance of giving back to their community. Pals and their grown-ups have access to priority ticketing and free parking in the PlayhouseSquare garage for select family performances as well as special pre- and post-show events. Family memberships are available for $50 and $75 per year.

Partners Partners is the official young professionals group of PlayhouseSquare. Members enjoy unique opportunities to network, volunteer and socialize in one of the most beautiful locations in downtown Cleveland. Young professionals can join Partners for as little as $50 per year.

Endowment and Planned Giving Individuals and families that have declared their intention to include PlayhouseSquare in their estate plans, whether by will, trust or life income arrangement, are recognized through The Muse Society. great lakes theater

Donors

On behalf of the trustees, artistic company and staff of Great Lakes Theater, we express our deepest appreciation to the many supporters who have made our 50th season such an extraordinary success. Listed below are the donors who contributed to the Great Lakes Theater Annual Fund between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. These contributions are part of the financial underpinning for our golden anniversary season now underway. To these donors, we say “evermore thanks!”

Make a Contribution As our supporters know, ticket revenue covers only about half of the cost of producing the high quality, professional classic theater for which Great Lakes Theater is known. We invite you to help us bridge this gap by making a tax-deductible contribution today and becoming a member of the Great Lakes Theater “family.” To make a donation or learn more, contact the Great Lakes Theater Development Office (216.453.1068) or visit the “Support Us” section of our website at www.greatlakestheater.org.

ur journey to bring the regional premiere of Sondheim on Sondheim to Cleveland originated from a conversation with Charlie Fee. It was September 2007. While we stood among the tables in the pre-renovated Hanna Theatre, Charlie was eagerly sharing the vision for this much beloved house. Descriptive phrases such as “thrust stage” and “banquette seating” peppered our lively exchange. Then he popped the question: Would there be a way for our organizations to work together on a show? Hmmmm…………..? Over the course of the next several months, the subject would emerge as we bumped into each other in elevators and hallways. Those brief encounters centered on timing: The run needed to be for a minimum of eight weeks to accommodate the season ticket holders. We considered a January/February run, but that would entail rehearsing and building the show over the December holidays — which always complicates life for nearly everyone involved. As we examined the options, opening in May and running into the summer was the most accommodating choice. With the 50th anniversary of GLT approaching, we decided that would be the perfect way to frame their landmark celebration. Should we select a play or a musical — a revival or new work? Our chat room occasionally included Bob Taylor, Vicky Bussert, Chris Flinchman, Matt Webb, Art Falco and David Greene. Eventually, we decided that marking a half-century of producing should be celebrated with an innovative method of storytelling. Enter James Lapine. This three-time Tony Award winning native of Mansfield, Ohio, has been collaborating with Stephen Sondheim for nearly 30 years. To honor the composer’s 80th birthday, Lapine created and directed a staged musical compendium of his life. The show, Sondheim on Sondheim, integrated video interviews with the legendary Mr. Sondheim teeing up the musical selections. Its inventive approach, combined with an engaging narrative, made it our No. 1 choice. There were complexities stemming from the fact that this project was developed as a birthday salute. In everyone’s zeal to create the piece, several artists collaborated on what became overlapping roles. Now, they had to sort through what seemed like an intertwined bundle of vermicelli, agreeing to who contributed what in order to grant us the rights. That was a 13-month series of meetings, emails and meetings. Our patience paid off. In January 2011, we were finally awarded the green light. By December, we were auditioning in Cleveland and New York. It was a whirlwind, to say the least. As a testament to this musical and the reputation of Great Lakes Theater, 1,200 hopeful cast members signed up to audition. The pre-screening narrowed the field to 300. The process of auditioning with Charlie and Vicky — it is an exhilarating experience. Charlie — who is always thinking with both sides of his brain — was simultaneously sizing up cast members for this production as well as for Romeo and Juliet. And Vicky — a master of many skills — seemed to know the lyric to every song. When anyone nervously drifted off track and forgot the lyric to their audition piece, she would jump in and sing with them to guide them back. Occasionally, after an auditionee left the room, Vicky would look at us and say, “They said ‘of’ instead of ‘for’ in that last phrase. That changes the intent of that lyric.” Rehearsals began on April 20, and what we have assembled is our A Team. All of us at PlayhouseSquare are very proud and honored to be working with this cast and the team at Great Lakes Theater. This is a glorious way for all of us to mark the golden anniversary of Cleveland’s professional — must seeth! — theater company.

Enjoy,

Producing Artistic Director

Friends,

O

Great Lakes Theater

n behalf of our artists, staff, and Board of Trustees, welcome to the final production of Great Lakes Theater’s 50th Anniversary Season! To all our new friends, joining us as part of our first-ever producing partnership with PlayhouseSquare, welcome to what we hope will be the first of many opportunities to share our work, the new Hanna Theatre and all that’s best about the PlayhouseSquare district – in a word, collaboration! While we celebrate our 50th anniversary as Cleveland’s Classic theater this year, we also recognize our 30 year history as partners in PlayhouseSquare and the incredible success of this magnificent historic theater district. The 50 year history of Great Lakes Theater began under the visionary leadership of Dorothy Teare, and our first Artistic Director, Arthur Lithgow. In the succeeding decades, fortune has shined on our company through a succession of extraordinary leaders, dedicated board members, and a community of support undaunted by the challenges of creating and sustaining the artistic and educational mission of Great Lakes Theater. We are thrilled to bring our 50th season to a conclusion in as strong a position as we have ever been – both financially and artistically! Over the course of this golden anniversary season we have taken many opportunities to recognize and honor the extraordinary contributions made by individuals and organizations over the past five decades of Great Lakes Theater. In a symbolic gesture to the thousands of people who have shaped our company, we are honoring “Fifty Stars” whose contributions have shone the brightest through our history. We began last July by featuring the name of each honoree for a full week on the marquee of the Hanna Theatre. Completing the 52 weeks of shining stars will be the names of William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens – in recognition of the significant role their works continue to play in the life of our company. At the center of our celebrations this year, we have created our most expansive programming in decades – a six play season of great works performed by a company of stellar artists who define our work onstage and in the community year round. Building on the momentum of this record-breaking season, we conclude our season with the newest work by America’s greatest composer for the theatre, Sondheim on Sondheim, in the first production to be seen outside of New York City! This production would not have been possible without the generous support of our friends at PlayhouseSquare, especially Gina Vernaci, Senior Vice President of Theater Operations, and Art Falco, President and CEO. To all, our most heartfelt thanks! We are thrilled to embark on this exciting joint endeavor with PlayhouseSquare and we welcome you to the Great Lakes Theater family!

We hope to see you in the Hanna again soon!

Charles Fee, Producing Artistic Director, Great Lakes Theater

verbatim (“I thought that you’d want what I want. Sorry, my dear.”) There is a distinct reason for his use of every word; you cannot understand his stories, his characters or “enter the world of the hat” without understanding his lyric choices. In the preface of his astonishing book, Finishing The Hat, Sondheim talks about the specific process of writing good lyrics: There are only three principles necessary for a lyric writer, all of them familiar truisms. In no particular order, and to be written in stone: Content Dictates Form Less Is More God Is in the Details all in the name of Clarity without which nothing else matters. A brilliant lesson not only for lyricists, but for all of us who work in the creative arts (“Careful the tale you tell. That is the spell”). Yes, I admit it, Sondheim speaks to me -- through his lyrics, through his music and through his books. Now, in Sondheim on Sondheim, he will speak to all of us with his own voice; enjoy the journey as this incomparable artist guides us through the truly amazing process of imagining, creating and finally finishing the hat. My crush on Mr. Sondheim remains as strong today as ever; he challenges, he inspires (“And oh boy, oh boy, can that boy fff-----oxtrot!)! P.S. In case you might be curious, the quotes in parenthesis come from the following songs (yes, I’m one of those annoying theatre people who tends to love to quote from Mr. Sondheim’s musicals): “Everybody Says Don’t” from Anyone Can Whistle, “Someone in a Tree” from Pacific Overtures, “Final Sequence” from Sweeney Todd, “Now You Know” from Merrily We Roll Along, “Putting It Together” and “Children and Art” from Sunday in the Park with George, Fosca from Passion, “Send in the Clowns” from A Little Night Music, “Children Will Listen” from Into the Woods, “Can That Boy Foxtrot!” cut from Follies. –Victoria Bussert, Director

isclaimer: I have always had a crush on Stephen Sondheim. No, not a “boyfriend” crush, but a wildly passionate, no holds barred, give me goosebumps kind of “artist” crush. Maybe it’s because I began my own professional career directing the Chicago premiere of Mr. Sondheim’s brilliant Pacific Overtures — an amazing opportunity which fell into my lap after several very prominent Chicago directors turned it down; perhaps they smartly recognized the overwhelming and rather frightening challenge of attempting such an ambitious project (“I say don’t — Don’t be afraid”). When the offer came my way, my friend and mentor, Gerald Freedman, immediately encouraged me to take it, which I naively did without reading the script or listening to the score (“I was younger then”). Gerald had actually spent time studying Japanese culture at the Oomoto Institute in Kameoka, Japan, so in retrospect, his overwhelming enthusiasm made sense. To say I was stunned when I actually reviewed the materials myself would be an understatement (“Oh, my God...”) — I never imagined a musical would cover so much historical, artistic and intellectual ground through so many multiple layers (“All right, now you know”). Nine months of research later — including studying Japanese/American history, learning Kabuki performance traditions, attempting an accurate Japanese tea ceremony and even perfecting the correct forms of bowing to royalty — I was finally ready to face the actors and begin a first rehearsal (“Bit by bit, Putting it together”). Every Sondheim musical is an intellectual and emotional adventure full of wonderful surprises; even now, as I teach his scenes in my classes at Baldwin Wallace (“Children and art...”), another tiny detail will suddenly reveal itself — the layers of these works never seem to end. His specificity with lyrics leaves me in awe; so much so, that I cannot tolerate a single missed word in a Sondheim musical — or even in an audition using a Sondheim song (“The more you cling to things, The more you love them”). I may not remember where I left my car keys, but I will happily quote any number of Sondheim lyrics

THE CREATORS James Lapine was born in 1949 in Mansfield, Ohio, and lived there until his early teens when his family moved to Stamford, Connecticut. He attended public schools before entering Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he majored in history. He went on to get an MFA in design from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. After graduate school, he moved to New York City where he worked part-time as a waiter; a page and tour guide at NBC; a free-lance photographer and graphic designer; and an architectural preservationist for the Architectural League of NY. One of his free-lance jobs was designing the magazine of the Yale School of Drama, Yale/Theater, then edited by Rocco Landesman and Robert Marx. The dean of the school, Robert Brustein, offered Lapine a full-time job designing all of the printed materials for the School of Drama and the Yale Repertory Theatre, as well as a faculty position teaching a course in advertising design. While at Yale, his students urged him to direct a play during the annual January period when both faculty and students undertook a project outside of their areas of study or expertise. At their suggestion, Lapine directed a Gertrude Stein play, Photograph. The play was five acts, and just

three pages in length. Assembling students and friends, the play was presented in New Haven and came to the attention of director Lee Breuer, who helped arrange for a small performance space in Soho to present the work for three weeks. The production was enthusiastically received and won Lapine an Obie award. Lapine was approached by Lyn Austin and Mary Silverman to create a new piece for the Music-Theatre Group. He wrote and produced a workshop version of Twelve Dreams, which was later presented at the Public Theatre and revived by Lincoln Center Theatre. Lapine eventually left the visual arts for a career in theater, where he has also written and directed the plays Table Settings, Luck, Pluck and Virtue, The Moment When, Fran’s Bed and Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing. He has written the book for and directed Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George, Into the Woods, Passion and the recent multi-media revue Sondheim on Sondheim. And with William Finn he has collaborated on March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland, later presented on Broadway As Falsettos, A New Brain, Muscle and the soon-to-be- produced, Little Miss Sunshine. On Broadway, he has also directed Golden Child, The Diary of Anne Frank, Amour and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. He has directed several other productions off-Broadway as well as three films. Lapine is a member of the Dramatist Guild Council and for the last nine years has been a mentor for TDF’s Open Doors Program. He is also on the board of Ars Nova Theater. He currently lives in New York City. Stephen Sondheim, one of the most influential and accomplished composer/lyricists in Broadway history, was born in New York City and raised in New York and Pennsylvania. As a teenager, he met Oscar Hammerstein II, who became Sondheim’s mentor. Sondheim graduated from Williams College, where he received the Hutchinson Prize for Music Composition. After graduation, he studied music theory and composition with Milton Babbitt. He worked for a short time in the 1950s as a writer for the television show Topper, His first professional musical theater job was as the songwriter for the unproduced musical Saturday Night. He wrote the lyrics for West Side Story (1957), Gypsy (1959) and Do I Hear A Waltz? (1965), as well as additional lyrics for Candide (1973). Musicals for which he has written both music and lyrics include A Funny
