Foreword For many music lovers in Ireland, especially those who enjoy chamber music, a June without the prospect of the wonderful week of music-making that is the Great Music in Irish Houses Festival, would be like Wimbledon without strawberries. The good news is that Ireland’s longestrunning Chamber Music Festival is back for its 49th season, running from June 11th to 16th inclusive. The planning of this event during the dark winter months always lifts our spirits with the thought of warm sunny summer evenings and wonderful music in some of Ireland’s most attractive spaces. We hope you’ll agree that the Great Music in Irish Houses Festival 2019 promises another mouth-watering banquet of worldclass performers, exciting programmes and exciting venues. This year, Great Music in Irish Houses will welcome artists from the United Kingdom, France, the Czech Republic, the United States, South Korea and New Zealand, as well as a number of our own home-grown performers who enjoy distinguished local and international careers. This year’s musical menu offers a smorgasbord of musical styles, spanning different centuries, in a winning hand of interesting venues in the Dublin and Greater Dublin area, as well as a foray beyond “The Pale”. Once again we have our signature festival-within-a-festival, the Dublin Musical Saunter, which this year salutes the renowned Irish pianist John O’Conor’s exceptional performance and teaching career. We look forward to the return of the iconic American pianist Richard Goode, the exhilarating Pavel Haas Quartet and the distinguished French artists, cellist Marc Coppey and the Van Kuijk Quartet. The renowned Colin Currie Quartet’s performance will include the Irish première of a new work by composer Kevin Volans, and should attract the younger generation to the Festival. In addition, the 2019 season will showcase a significant number of local performers highlighting our own musical pedigree. They include such distinguished artists as John O’Conor, Finghin Collins, Ailish Tynan and Chamber Choir Ireland. While much of our activities in recent years has been confined to the greater Dublin area, this year sees us spreading our wings slightly beyond The Pale. We travel to the Lake County where Ireland’s ancient East meets Ireland’s hidden heartlands in Mullingar, Co Westmeath. The grounds of the Georgian villa that is Belvedere House, former home of the Rochford family, where Mullingar native, the internationally acclaimed soprano Ailish Tynan will be joined by Finghin Collins and the stunning French Van Kuijk Quartet. And, still outside

Dublin city limits, the long-time favourite Festival venue Killruddery House, whose fragrant Orangery will host Finghin Collins and acclaimed French cellist Marc Coppey. Another amazing building surrounded by wide green spaces is the Irish State’s official guesthouse in Dublin’s Phoenix Park, Farmleigh House. Thanks to the OPW, it will be open to Festival-goers for the Dublin Musical Saunter, the day-long celebration of John O’Conor, which features among others the seemingly ubiquitous Finghin Collins. To continue with this verdant theme, Dublin’s colourful National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin is an ideal venue for the prodigiously talented Pavel Haas Quartet. That Georgian jewel that is the immaculately preserved Royal Irish Academy in Dawson Street welcomes Richard Goode for his second visit to the Festival. Still in central Dublin, just a few doors down from the RIA, St Ann’s Church, a favourite venue for music performances, this year offers an opportunity for an exciting collaboration between the Festival and Ireland’s flagship choral ensemble, Chamber Choir Ireland. In recent years one of the most rewarding partnerships the Festival has forged has been with the Office of Public Works (OPW), and this year we are delighted that under their auspices two venues in Dublin Castle, the Castle Hall and the Printworks, have been made available to us. Great Music in Irish Houses would like to take this opportunity to express its gratitude to all those who help maintain the pre-eminent position in Ireland’s cultural calendar this Festival continues to enjoy. In particular, we would like to acknowledge the support of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, the Arts Council, the OPW, Dublin City Council, Westmeath County Council, RTÉ, BBC Radio 3, the Royal Irish Academy, Chamber Choir Ireland, our venue partners, sponsors, the French Embassy in Ireland, GUR Holdings LLC and of course, our Friends. With wonderful music from greats such as JS Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy and Dvořák, to newer musical voices such as Stockhausen and Steve Reich, as well as contemporary Irish composers Elaine Agnew, Deirdre Gribbin, Kevin Volans and Ailbhe McDonagh, who was commissioned to write a piece for John O’Conor’s special day by the Festival, we are sure everyone will find something to satisfy their musical appetite. Please check us out on social media platforms and on our own website www.greatmusicinirishhouses.com
