ANCIENT CULTURE
BUDJ BIM LANDSCAPE
Your journey through the Great Ocean Road region and the roads we travel on today follows the ‘songlines’ or ancient trading routes originally tread by the first people of this land. Your whole visit is a cultural experience when you appreciate the land, the sea, its shelter and resources.
Amongst the cultural experiences in the Great Ocean Road region is the UNESCO listed, culturally significant landscape of Budj Bim – located in the traditional Country of the Gunditjmara people.
The unique lava flow from an ancient volcanic eruption is what created this significant landscape and connects the three main components – the long dormant Budj Bim Volcano and Tae Rak (Lake Condah), the wetland swamps of Kurtonitj and the rocky ridges and marshes of Tyrendarra. Budj Bim’s system of weirs, channels and volcanic lava flow allowed the Gunditjmara people to craft the earliest living example of aquaculture in the world. Archaeological investigation of the history of eel farming here proves it dates back over 6,000 years, however it is believed that these practices have occurred here for far longer.

WILDLIFE WONDERS
Welcome to the wild side of the Great Ocean Road...
At Wildlife Wonders you’ll discover lush tree fern gullies, eucalypt woodlands and spectacular ocean vistas. Your conservationist guide will take you on a 75-minute journey along a gentle, all abilities path, spotting wildlife and sharing the secrets of the bush and the plants and animals who call the Otways home.
It’s a bespoke experience—designed by Hobbiton Landscape Designer and an Art Director of The Hobbit, Brian Massey—which engages all your senses and gives you the unique opportunity to see our elusive Australian wildlife in a wild environment. You’ll encounter animals you’ve never seen before and are unlikely to see in the wild, and we’ll share with you how the Conservation Ecology Centre is working to protect these species across the Otways. Each and every visitor also contributes to this critical research and conservation work, as all the profits from Wildlife Wonders go directly to the Conservation Ecology Centre to fund research and conservation efforts to protect Australia’s unique plants and animals.

The region’s western reaches are within a comfortable drive of Adelaide. If you’re fly-driving, collect your rental car at Melbourne, Avalon, Warrnambool, Portland or Adelaide Airports. Trains run regularly between Melbourne, Geelong, Colac and Warrnambool and buses run the coastal route.

DRIVING THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD
Travel times are a guide only and may vary due to the scenic winding nature of roads and different weather conditions. The region is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace with lots of detours and stops! Expect travel times to be longer during peak season.
Drive on the left in Australia and use slow turnout lanes to allow others to pass. Share the drive –don’t do the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne in one day.
Stay safe: Be aware of the environment within which you are travelling. In an emergency call: 000 (police, fire or ambulance). VicEmergency hotline: 1800 226 226 (free call)
