men’s shirt back in dark gray Hemlocks in the southern Appalachians are under attack from a non-native insect, the hemlock woolly adelgid. If nothing is done, we will lose these magnificent trees, including the thousands of acres of old-growth in the Smokies. At least $9.45 from your purchase of this beautiful shirt will go to save hemlock trees in the Smokies. The purchase of one shirt will generate enough income to treat a 75-foot tall tree or raise about a dozen predator beetles. Predator beetles eat lots and lots of hemlock adelgids, and they breed like crazy too. Unisex available in dark gray. NOTE: Because

Old- Time Smoky Mountain Music CD 34 historic songs, ballads, and instrumentals recorded in the Great Smoky Mountains by “Song Catcher” Joseph S. Hall. In 1939 a young man by the name of Joseph S. Hall lugged some early recording equipment around the Great Smoky Mountains with the purpose of capturing the real music of the Smokies before it was changed forever. It was a tumultuous time when hundreds of families were leaving or had left their mountain farms to make way for the creation of the new national park. There was lots of music in the hills and hollows in those days: ballads, blues, folk, gospel, and country. Here are recordings of 34 songs available to the public for the first time. They include: “My Home Is in the Smoky Mountains, Sourwood Mountain, John Henry, Don’t Forget Me Little Darling, On Top of Old Smoky, Mule Skinner Blues, Ground Hog, Up On Big Pigeon,” and many more. Also included is a 40-page booklet with all song lyrics, historic photos, and authoritative essays on the history of mountain music. Available exclusively from Great Smoky Mountains Association. #200923 $14.95 22

Smoky Mountain Magic: A Novel by Horace Kephart This “lost” novel was completed in 1929, two years before the famous author’s death, and has never been published until now. Smoky Mountain Magic’s fictional story takes place during the summer of 1925, mostly along the Deep Creek watershed in the Great Smoky Mountains, but also in a thinlydisguised Bryson City (called Kittuwa) and the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Characters include a mysterious stranger, a greedy land baron, a cadre of mountain folk ranging in constitution from stalwart to conniving, a beautiful botanist, a Cherokee chief, and a witch. The novel fits the adventure story genre of the day with a bit of romance interwoven. The front matter of the book features a 22-page introduction by George Ellison which serves as a minibiography of Kephart. Softcover. #400842 $12.95

Horace Kephart Knife In commemoration of author and park advocate Horace Kephart’s 150th birthday this September, Great Smoky Mountains Association is offering a very limited supply of replicas of the famous Kephart Knife. In his renowned book Camping and Woodcraft, Horace Kephart says: “For years I used knives of my own design, because there was nothing on the market that met my notion of what a sensible, practical sheath knife should be; but we have it now in the knife shown here. It is of the right size, the right shape, and the proper thinness.” Knife maker Glen Brooks of Benton, TN, produced this replica of the knife Kephart used in the out-of-doors and was commercially available at sporting goods stores and by mail order nearly a century ago. #650730 $289.99
