HISTORY A Home in Walker Valley: The Story of Tremont Walker Valley (now referred to as the “Tremont” area of the park) has one of the most fascinating histories of any Smoky Mountain locale. Much of the credit for this goes to “Big” Will Walker, husband to (at least) three wives and father of (at least) 27 children. Will was the quintessential mountain man, able to kill a bear, build a cabin, plough a field, drive cattle, carve a mill stone, and charm a hive of bees. And that’s only the beginning of the story! Then comes the logging boom and a railroad and sprawling “company town” springing up overnight. Throw in the Girl Scout camp, the CCC, and the environmental education center, and you have an idyllic microcosm of southern Appalachia. Includes more than 30 historic photos. 52 pages, softcover. By Jeremy Lloyd. Retail $5.95 Order #400841 Corn from a Jar: Moonshining in the Great Smoky Mountains In the Great Smoky Mountains, moonshine making was a world unto itself. On the one hand, moonshining was about dynamite-totting lookouts, fast cars, snitching, quick cash, hidden stills, “revenuers,” and deadly gunplay. On the other, it was a story of earnest farm families living in remote mountain valleys and practicing their traditional craft of moonshining so they could buy shoes for their children. Yet perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this book is the sudden resurgence of making moonshine in the Southern mountains today. Join author and noted historian Dr. Daniel S. Pierce to learn about the traditions, foibles and dangers of mountain “blockading” from the early 19th century to tomorrow. Daniel S. Pierce.
