Exhibit Theme PUBLIC: CELEBRATING STILL AND MOVING PICTURES This year, the call for submissions to photographers for Greek Film and Foto Week asked to consider understanding reality through perception, taking as a starting the idea of 'the image' from Plato's The Allegory of the Cave. In the story, the Ancient Greek philosopher describes a situation where prisoners are chained to a wall in a cave, unable to turn their heads and look around. A fire burns casting shadows of puppets that a puppeteer is holding in front of the flames. The prisoners see only the shadows cast by the puppets, never the objects creating these images. Their understanding of form and reality is based on what they see and hear. This year the CONTACT Festival investigates public, and social and political issues shaped by experiences of 'publicness'. The thoughtful selection of exhibitions, installations and events builds a Festival that "highlights how photography shapes collective experience and makes things public" – a celebration of the medium that is proven to be able to influence our collective identity.
Exhibition Schedule May 6-12, 2012 Exhibition Open to the General Public Sunday, May 6, 2012 11 am to 6 pm Monday, May 7 through Friday May 11, 2012 10 am to 6 pm Saturday, May 12 10 am to 12 pm WHERE: The Burroughes Building | 639 Queen Street West
Exhibition Curators
Maria Kanellopoulos received a BDes from the Ontario College of Art and Design. She has worked as an Exhibitions Coordinator since 2009. Her experience includes mounting and touring exhibitions, and hosting programming events including film screenings, musical and theatre performances, and educational tours workshops.
After an eight year career in marketing Voula Monoholias left the corporate world to pursue her passions for photography, travel and people. Her desire to photograph street life in cities around the world is the focus of her practice: "I have a lot of love and intrigue for city life; how and where citizens live, their daily rituals, and interactions with each other in the public space. My photos capture the human side and emotion of a city. It’s a visceral experience and one that I share through photography. The street is life."
Curatorial Statement Greek Film & Foto Week 2012 brings together work by over 20 contemporary artists of Hellenic heritage to celebrate the still and moving image. Presented in the historic revival Burroughes Building during CONTACT, GFFW 2012 is the Foundation's second annual public exhibition of artists working in a photobased medium. The Film presentation introduces acclaimed shorts and the feature documentary Krisis, a 62-minute feature documentary addressing the economic crisis in Greece. The Foto component features photographers who consider the camera image as mediator of public reality – the selection of work celebrates heritage, personal identity, international landscapes, and stories of Greece. Featuring prints by acclaimed Magnum Photographer Constantine Manos, and a special tribute to photojournalist Chris Hondros (1970-2011), works include conceptual projects, photojournalism, street photography and iPhoneography. This year CONTACT Festival investigates social and political issues shaped by experiences of 'publicness'. Our hope is that the selection of work presents stories intending to promote discussion about our role as public citizens. Raised in a Greek household with strong connections to Greece, our upbringing has been largely influenced by a lifetime of exposure to Greek culture, education, tradition and many experiences and memories. Today as we see Greece fight through difficult times, we are consumed with conflicting messages of the idyllic country that many know and love. We aim to remind the world of the positive impact from Greece and its citizens, and continue to explore new ideas to contribute in positive, creative ways. This exhibition is presented by the Greek America Foundation, along with Lee Polydor and The Burroughes Building. Thank you to Getty Images, Gregory Pappas and Despina Kreatsoulas for making this possible. Special thanks to all photographers. Maria Kanellopoulos, Curator Voula Monoholias, Curator In honor of Chris Hondros, Senior Getty Images Photographer (1970-2011)
From Gregory C. Pappas Founder & Chairman Greek America Foundation
The Greek America Foundation is a non-profit organization that I founded in 1997 with a mission to "promote, preserve and perpetuate the Greek culture, history and heritage in the Americas." With a series of publications, programs, concerts, special events and institutional endeavors, the Foundation seeks to bring elements of Greek culture, history and heritage—also known as Hellenism—to the forefront of mainstream America, making it a relevant component of our followers' everyday life.
Our goal from the beginning has been to break stereotypes, not plates. The ideals we espouse as an organization are central to our DNA as Greeks. They are core components of our heritage like innovation (kainotomia), paideia, and philanthropia—things we often take for granted as we allow baklava and Zorba to overcome our psyche and define our character. The Hellenic Legacy Scholarship fund sends students to Greece for full-semester study abroad experiences at US-accredited academic institutions and our internship program offers life-changing experiences to students to live and work abroad for an entire summer, simultaneously expanding their professional networks and opportunities for personal growth. Paideia and personal growth for the young people of our community is core to our mission. The Gabby Awards (Greek America’s Best and Brightest Stars) have become our signature event that celebrates arête (excellence) and honors individuals who have touched their industries and those around them. Our Forty Under 40 awards recognize young leaders from throughout North America who not only strive for excellence in all they do, but who serve their communities through emphasis on philanthropy and community service. Our National Innovation Conference is an international gathering of opinion leaders, business people and innovators who, together with an audience of like-
minded people, create a modern day Athenian agora where ideas are exchanged. The Foundation also publishes Greek America Magazine, the continent’s most widely circulated periodical for followers of all things Greek. The magazine is published four times a year and features a diverse range of stories consistent with the mission of the Foundation, as well as news and announcements for the Foundation's donors and supporters. We have received broad support by thousands of donors, supporters and those who share our vision throughout North America, making the Greek America Foundation one of the most progressive and active organizations on the continent. This festival—now in its second year and growing, was the brainchild of a foundation supporter from Toronto: Lee Polydor, whose vision and support have enabled the growth of Greek Film & Foto Week into a major cultural institution. None of this would be possible without his personal vision and support, as well as that of his company, Queen Street Partners. Furthermore, without the additional support from Dr. Marie Bountrogianni and her family and Manos Petrellis, this dynamic series of events that complement the weekend could not have been possible. We are thrilled with the new relationship we are forming with the Hellenic Heritage Foundation, who are also financial sponsors of our efforts and important partners in what we strive to accomplish. Finally, the people of the Greek America Foundation who donate their talents and time to our cause is what differentiates us from everyone else. We have an army of dedicated people who support this vision, including Toronto natives Voula Monoholias and Maria Kanellopoulos who have meticulously curated this show. They have spent endless time selecting, writing, corresponding with artists and ensuring that Greek Film & Foto Week is a world-class exhibition.

Chris covered most of the world's major conflicts since the late 1990s, including wars in Kosovo, Angola, Sierra Leone, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Kashmir, the West Bank, Iraq, and Liberia. His work appeared on the covers and pages of dozens of acclaimed magazines and major American newspapers. Hondros received numerous awards, including multiple honors from World Press Photo in Amsterdam, the International Pictures of the Year Competition, the Visa Pour L'Image in France, and the John Faber award from the Overseas Press Club. In 2004 Chris was a Nominated Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Spot News Photography for his work in Liberia. In 2006 he won the Robert Capa Gold Medal, war photography's highest honor, for his work in Iraq. Chris was named a 2007 "Hero of Photography" by American Photo magazine, and was a 2008 National Magazine Award finalist. He was a senior staff photographer for Getty Images. This tribute, supported and authorized by Getty Images, includes three of his iconic images of a young Liberian soldier, in the heat of battle during that country's civil war in July of 2003. The second and third images in the series are of the same young man, when Chris returned to Liberia in October of 2005 after the war. Hondros-- typical of him to care so much about those he filmed photographed the young Liberian soldier-turned-student at the same location after paying his tuition so that he could complete high school. Getty's editors selected these images because they compliment the work of the Greek America Foundation's scholarship fund, which also places a value on young people's education. The images on display at Greek Film & Foto Week will be auctioned and proceeds will be split between the Greek America Foundation's scholarship endowment fund and the Chris Hondros Fund, which supports young people following in Chris' footsteps with grants and scholarships.
