KHYBER PAST Oil 15”x15” $4500
One’s past can definitely affect the present. For some it can be paralyzing; for others something to be avoided; for others simply consist of fond memories. “Khyber Past” is a meditation on that reality with its little, wooden elephants reacting to the chain of time in different ways. Our family spent a little over ten years in Pakistan, not terribly far from the famous Khyber Pass, and that era, along with its influence, is represented by the items depicted.

FLAGS ALONG THE AVENUE Oil on linen 16”x12” $3500
I like to paint cities in motion with patriotic flags flowing and people living life to the fullest. “Flags Along the Avenue” is losely based upon Claude Monet’s masterwork, “Rue Montorgueil, Paris, 1878” located in the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, France and upon Childe Hassam’s “Allies Day, May 1917” located in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.

CHURCH OF COMILLAS Watercolor and Gouache 9x12 $500
I spent a week in the Basque region of Spain this summer after I finished lecturing in Paris and Brussels. I stayed in a small village in Cantabria called Comillas. I work every day en plein aire initially starting in a mix of watercolor and gouache, but by the end of the week was working solely in gouache. These two studies were the first two of the group. Painted in about 4 hours each, the weather was brisk, overcast and constantly changing being right on the ocean. C I N C I N N AT I M A S T E R S : O L D & N E W

THIS OLD BARN Oil on Linen Panel 9x12 $750
This old barn in Clermont County had seen its heyday decades ago. Its geriatric character and interesting shadows provided a great subject for a plein air painting.

AT THE MIRROR Oil on Linen 40”x28” NFS
The light is the star of the show in this painting. It dominates the figure as it plays against the inside of the sitter’s arms and spills down over the dress. Then this display repeats itself two more times from different angles in the mirrors in front of the sitter. The strength of the design is in the contrast and the repetition.

SELECTIONS FROM PORGY & BESS Ink on Paper 20”x14” $475
The black ink drawings were made during the performance of the opera at Music Hall. The color art was done in the studio with the color palette inspired by Frank Duveneck’s oil on canvas painting of the Italian/European town/village landscape scene, ca. 1870.

FRESH FLOWERS Oil 24x18 $2900
This painting Fresh Flowers illustrates my response to Frank Duveneck and his expressive brushstrokes and direct painting style. Almost nearly painted in one day, this piece is an example of this direct painting technique needed to capture flowers laid on a table instead of in a vase of water!

A ROBOT WALKS INTO A BAR Oil on Linen 18”x24” $4800
I started this picture as a demostration during the Greenacres Beer Tasting Event last year. This scene takes place in a futuristic robot bar with a bartender preparing a Manhattan. While on the topic of this painting I want to settle an argument, as my brother claims the Armatron Robot in this painting is his. It’s not! It’s mine! I got it for Christmas! Shut up about it Ben or I’m telling Mom!

QUINTESSENTIAL TUSCANY Oil on Linen 24”x18” $3600
I can identify with Frank Duveneck’s Italian landscape painting as I lived in Florence, worked in Genoa and painted in Tuscany over a span of 15 years. My painting, Quintessential Tuscany, is an imaginary composition of all things I love when painting en plein air in Tuscan landscape. Vineyards grow near and far, tall dark cypress stand in contrast to the warmth of terra cotta roofs and red poppies appear with wild abandon in the golden fields.

LEMONS AND WHITE Oil on Panel 18x24 $2900
I took note of some white porcelain items in our kitchen and realized that a high key scene of white against white - with some quiet color - would make an interesting painting. I wanted to force myself to paint a lighter painting.

SEPTEMBER ORCHARD Oil on Panel 11”x14” $1000
I painted this from a plein air study I did in Michigan in September. The apples were still ripening from green to red. I liked the way the top fully-ripe apple was casting a top shadow on the greenish, sunlit apple below.

SOLITUDE Oil on Linen 16x20 $2600
As a college art major, I visited many fine museums in Europe. Boat and harbor scenes were always my favorites. Recalling all of those scenes was my inspiration for this painting of a boat moored in a harbor located in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
