2018 WAGNER WOMEN’S LACROSSE POSTSEASON GUIDE
Seahawks Claim Second NEC Championship, NCAA Appearance in the Last Three Years *History was made at sun-splashed Hameline Field on Wednesday, March 9 as Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Year Ally Alliegro had a hat trick, to go with four assists, while fellow freshman midfielder Erin Kerstetter, junior attack Marjorie Dehm, and sophomore attack Stephanie Falcone added two goals each in leading Wagner to a 13-9 win over Mercer in the preliminary round of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship. *The win adds to the Seahawks’ single-season program record for most victories as Wagner improved to 14-5 on the season. The previous record for wins in a season was 11, held by the 2006 (11-6) and 2014 teams (11-7). With the loss, the Southern Conference-champion Bears end up with a final season record of 9-11. Today’s preliminary round victory sends the Seahawks into the first round of the NCAA Championship at Towson University (15-4) on Friday, May 11. Opening draw between the No. 7 nationally-seeded Tigers and the Green & White is set for 3:00 p.m. Towson, which competes in the talent-rich Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), are making their 10th NCAA appearance and third straight. The winner of the Wagner-Towson game will advance to the second round on Sunday, May 13 against the winner of Friday’s contest vs. Northwestern and Richmond. In addition to recording the first NCAA win in program history today, the 2018 Seahawks became the fourth Wagner team ever, and second in as many days, to win an NCAA playoff game. On Tuesday, the women’s water polo team defeated UC San Diego, the same team the Green & White knocked off in the 2017 NCAA Championship. The fourth team in Wagner history to ever claim an NCAA playoff win was the 2012 Seahawk football team, which defeated Colgate in a first-round game. For the six seniors on this 2018 NEC championship team, today’s win was the 40th in their respective careers, which is a senior class program record. The previous record for wins by a senior class was 37, held by the 2017 Seahawks. Wagner jumped out to a 4-1 lead 10 minutes into the game as senior attack Heidi Colford, junior attack Anna Belle Reilly, Falcone, and Dehm each found the back of the net. The quick and athletic Bears then put together their best seven-minute stretch of play on the afternoon, going on off a 3-0 run, capped by a Kate Leone score with 9:13 left in the half that tied it at 4-4. With 6:36 left in the half, freshman attack Stefani Peluso put the Seahawks back in the lead at 5-4 with a goal off the second assist of the game from senior midfielder Lauren Ednie. The Bears answered with just 12 seconds left in the half on a goal by Jo Imbriani which made it a 5-5 game at the break. As has been the norm in the majority of games this season, third-year head coach Katie Rowan turned to senior Kelsey Fee in the second half, in place of senior Lucy Darlington, who had recorded five first-half saves. Fee came up with a big save on Mercer’s first possession of the second half on a point-blank blast by Kelly Hagerty. After a nearly five-minute stretch of scroreless play by both teams, Ednie put Wagner into the lead for good 6-5 on a free position shot. After Ednie broke the seal, Alligero and Dehm answered with quick-strike goals, the latter off a Colford assist at the 23:53 mark that gave the Seahawks an 8-5 lead. It then appeared that Wagner had taken a four-goal lead but a goal by Ednie from in close, was negated as the senior was called for her second yellow card for a dangerous follow through. Instead of being up by a 9-5 count, the score remained 8-5 and the Seahawks were faced with the prospect of playing the game’s final 22:56 without the services of the NEC Midfielder of the Year. With Ednie on the bench, Mercer struck for consecutive scores by Leone at 22:21, and Lindsey Zeltwagner at 18:47, to draw within one goal at 8-7. The Seahawks, however, responded in championship form, going on a 4-0 run, on two goals apiece from the freshman midfield tandem of Alliegro and Kerstetter. This 4-0 outburst put Wagner in command at 12-7 with 6:45 left en route to the 13-9 win. Fee wound up with five big second-half saves while allowing just four goals. Freshman midfielder midfielder Madeline Seims came up big once again in the draw control department, matching her career high with 9 DC’s. Leone, Zeltwagner and Imbriani paced Mercer in scoring with two goals each while Iseabal Cryne had 10 saves in goal.

Since the adoption of the Wagner Plan in 1997, enrollment has increased by nearly 40 percent and student quality as measured by high school average and SAT scores have improved as well. Once largely a commuter campus, now 82 percent of all undergraduates live on campus in residence halls that offer “million dollar” views. Though continuing to serve students from metropolitan New York, the college draws most of its enrollment from beyond the immediate region. By every measure – enrollment, endowment, and national reputation – Wagner is ascending the ranks of America’s strongest small colleges that blend the liberal arts with a commitment to service and preparation for the professions. Former Syracuse University assistant coach Katie Rowan, the most decorated player in the program’s history and a member of the 2009 and 2013 USA World Cup gold medalist teams, was named head women’s lacrosse coach at Wagner College in June, 2015. In her first year at the helm of the Seahawk program, Rowan guided Wagner to the 2016 Northeast Conference championship, the first in program history, which earrned the Green & White their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championships. In her second year, she guided the Green & White to their second straight NEC Championship game appearance where they fell to Bryant. The Seahawks, who finished the 2016 campaign with a 10-10 record, fell to Penn by a count of 17-7 in NCAA First Round play. While the NCAA Championship was new territory for Wagner, this marked the 10th consecutive season that Rowan has been a part of the NCAA’s as either a player or coach. She previously made the NCAA’s three times during an All-American playing career at Syracuse, and has now reached seven NCAA’s as a coach - four as an assistant at Syracuse, two as an assistant at Albany, and now one in her lone season at Wagner. Rowan remains a top player herself and was part of the inaugural United Women’s Lacrosse League (UWLX) championship team for the Long Island Sound, contributing a goal in the 13-8 victory title win over the Boston Storm on July 31, 2016. An assistant coach at her alma mater from 2013-15 under head coach and Hall of Fame player Gary Gait, Rowan worked extensively with the Orange offense where she helped tutor First-Team All-American attackers Alyssa Murray, Kayla Treanor and Halle Majorana. In 2015, Syracuse won the ACC Championship and earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Championship and advanced to the national semifinals where they dropped a 10-8 decision to top seed and eventual national champion, Maryland. Following her graduation from Syracuse in 2009, the Delmar, NY native served as a volunteer coach for the Orange through the 2010 season, before accepting a full-time assistant coaching position at Albany. In her two seasons in the Capital City, Rowan helped guide the Great Danes to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by a 2011 campaign that saw Albany claim America East Conference regular-season and conference titles, and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. In September 2012, Rowan returned to Syracuse where she helped Gait continue to develop one of the nation’s premier programs. The Orange’s all-time career leader in points and assists, Rowan amassed 396 points on 232 goals and 164 assists in her career en route to becoming the school’s initial three-time First-Team All-America selection. Rowan led the nation in scoring in 2008 and was named a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy and the Honda Award. She set single-season school records for points (142) and assists (69) that year and led the Orange to the national semifinals for the first time in school history. Rowan was a four-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection and a two-time BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year honoree. In 2013, Rowan helped the U.S. National Team to its second consecutive gold medal at the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario. She was named the player of the match in the final game after setting a program record for goals in a game (8) and recording 10 points. Rowan also helped the U.S. to the gold medal at the 2009 FIL World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic. She was Team USA’s second-leading scorer, recording 35 points during the tournament. With 67 career points in 14 games, Rowan is tied with Kelly Amonte-Hiller for the most points scored in U.S. history. Rowan earned her bachelor’s degree in inclusive education/special education and sociology in 2009 and her Master’s in literacy education in 2010 from Syracuse. She was voted to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA At-Large Academic All-America national first team as a senior after receiving second-team honors as a junior. Rowan earned the 2009 Soladay Award, which is the highest honor bestowed upon a Syracuse student-athlete.

SECOND SEASON ALBANY (‘16) Former University at Albany four-year letterwinner Katherine Sweeney joined the Seahawk athletic family in August, 2016 as assistant women’s lacrosse coach. As an attacker for the Great Danes, Sweeney helped lead UAlbany to a record of 65-19 (.774) and to the America East Conference championship game in each of her four years, highlighted by an appearance in the 2015 NCAA Championships in her junior season. For her career, the Canton, NY native scored 48 points on 45 goals and three assists. Sweeney’s lacrosse background also includes a pair of coaching stints with the ADK Club Team and Battlax Camp, both of which are located in Albany, NY, where she she inspired and taught young players skill development and team concepts. At Wagner, Sweeney will join a Seahawk program that claimed its first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship last season, which earned the Green & White a berth in the 2016 NCAA Championship. “I am excited to welcome Katherine to Wagner College and to our lacrosse program!,” said Rowan. “Her work ethic, strong lacrosse background, and ability to communicate effectively will make her a tremendous addition to our team. I believe Katherine will be a great mentor to our student-athletes and we look forward to getting started with the 2016-2017 campaign.” In addition to her playing and coaching experience, Sweeny also completed a pair of internships at UAlbany. Fehmel is coming off of a spectacular senior season for the Stags, recording career highs with 54 points, 44 goals, 40 groundballs, 39 draw controls and 29 caused turnovers in earning First-Team All-MAAC honors for the second consecutive season. The midfielder was a four-year AllMAAC performer as she earned Second-Team All-Conference honors as a sophomore after being tabbed to the All-Rookie Team as a freshman. A two-time MAAC All-Academic Team honoree while majoring in psychology, the Shoreham, NY native finished her career ranked eighth all-time in Fairfield history in points (167) and goals (125), first in game-winning goals (11), eighth in free-position goals (35), 10th in assists (42), and ninth in games started (64). In addition to her stellar playing career, Fehmel has spent the last four summers serving as head coach for a pair of teams affiliated with the Long Island Top Guns Lacrosse Club, in addition to serving as a coach for the WestPort (CT) Girls Lacrosse Clinic each of the past two years. “I am pleased to announce the addition of Alex Fehmel to our coaching staff,” said Rowan. “We are excited to have Alex on board, as she comes to Wagner with tremendous playing experiences and a phenomenal career at Fairfield, as well as with valuable coaching experiences at the club level. Alex will be a huge asset for us all over the field, and we can’t wait to get started this fall!” In addition to her coaching duties, Fehmel will pursue a Master’s Degree during her time on Grymes Hill.

Northeast Conference History Now in its 37th year as an NCAA Division I athletic entity, the Northeast Conference mission remains unchanged: to provide opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential in the classroom, in athletic competition and in the community. Focusing on the areas of student-athlete achievement, academic excellence, integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, innovation, community partnership and national engagement, the NEC has made significant strides in recent years under the leadership of Commissioner Noreen Morris. As the Conference builds around the theme of #NECPride, the 2015-16 academic year presents new opportunities for the NEC to stand out among its peers, while fostering a sense of pride amongst its student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans. When the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first established as the ECAC-Metro Conference back in 1981, the league’s founders had one goal in mind: to create a competitive NCAA Division I men’s basketball conference for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard. A single-sport entity at its inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations over the past three plus decades, having transformed itself into a 10-member, 22-sport conference. The remarkable success story of the Conference began to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports. Three years later, a change of name was in order and the Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship continuing to grow over the years, the NEC now enjoys qualification or play-in access to 14 different NCAA Championships (baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball). Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since its inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, LIU Brooklyn, Robert Morris, St. Francis Brooklyn, Saint Francis U and Wagner remain part of the current 10-school alignment. They are joined by Mount St. Mary’s (admitted in 1989), Central Connecticut (1997), Sacred Heart (1999) and Bryant (2012). The NEC’s six-state geographic footprint includes access to such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence. NEC member institutions now compete in 22 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. NEC Footprint - 2015-16 An Innovative Leader The NEC continues to embrace social media to attract and convey its message to a growing fan base. The Conference has built a loyal following on its Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube pages, and the NEC Overtime! blog remains a popular destination spot for fans of the league. One of the landmark moments in Northeast Conference history came back in August, 2012 with the launch of NEC Front Row. The NEC’s state-of-the-art digital network debuted to rave reviews and in the three years since has attracted a loyal following for its rich set of content, which includes live regular season and NEC Championship events, on-demand video, highlight packages, coaches shows, features, original programming and access to league’s extensive digital library, all free of charge to users. The network gives fans inside access to the NEC and its student-athletes on the field, in the classroom, across campus, and in the community. By the conclusion of the 2014-15 academic year, over 2,100 live events had been broadcast on NEC Front Row with more than 800,000 viewers tuning in to the network. The third year of NEC Front Row saw viewership increase by nearly 10 percent, with an increase in ratings in nearly every NEC sponsored sport. In March, 2014 the Conference launched a companion NEC on the Run iOS mobile app that provides free, one-click access to live events and on-demand content from NEC Front Row. Fans can also join the conversation through the app’s social media integration. The NEC on the Run app can be downloaded on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
