Standing in the Long Now Greenbelt 09
Artists and poets have always stood in the ‘Long Now’. There’s something about the act of creation that holds the seed of so many untold possibilities – “to see a world in a grain of sand…and eternity in an hour” as William Blake put it. Like the Middle Eastern farmer planting an olive tree that could bear fruit for two thousand years, acts of creativity take on a life of their own long after their author is dead. Did Shakespeare dare to believe that after hundreds of years he would still be reminding us: “Love’s not Time’s fool”?
If many of us do feel fooled by Time in our instant culture, our glorious handmade Festival carves out a pause – a moment of astonishing creativity. Hundreds of fantastic artists and volunteers and thousands of Greenbelters all participate to create something that’s bigger than all of us put together, and bursting with possibility. What seed may be planted for future generations? What acts of creativity may be inspired that will outlive all of us? Hold that thought as we come together – with an array of astonishing, provocative and delightful artists, speakers, writers and musicians – to stand in the Long Now... and enjoy the view.
Talks Always surprising, always thoughtful and always worth a listen, including: Rob Bell, the man behind Nooma, Velvet Elvis and Mars Hill Bible Church; acclaimed theologian Margaret Barker; Gene Robinson, Bishop of New Hampshire and author of In the Eye of the Storm: Swept to the Centre by God; Sami Awad, Palestinian exponent of non-violent ways to end Israeli occupation; and Gillian Tett, an early predictor of the current economic crisis, highly prescient author of Fool’s Gold and Assistant Editor of the Financial Times. David Lammy MP, Minister for Higher Education; Communitarian, city-lover and prophet Ann Morisy; Jeff Halper, founder of the Israeli Coalition Against House Demolitions; Rita Nakashima Brock, co-author of Saving Paradise; and Douglas Alexander MP, Secretary of State for International Development. Tamsin Omond, founder of Climate Rush; liturgist and hymnwriter John Bell; and Sister Frances Dominica, founder of the world’s first hospice for terminally ill children.
For detailed listings see greenbelt.org.uk/lineup
Music Alastair McIntosh, author of Soil and Soul, described by Thom Yorke as “truly mental”; Matthew Bishop, Business Editor of The Economist; author and founder of We Are What We Do, Eugenie Harvey; philosopher, columnist and vicar, Giles Fraser; Bev Thomas, consultant and lecturer on race and social justice; Ursula King, international guru on spirituality, women and religion; Burmese-born campaigner Zaw Lu Aung; and scientist and theologian Alister McGrath. Roman Krznaric, expert on Empathy from The School of Life; magazine editor and Radical Middle Way project manager Abdul-Rehman Malik; awardwinning journalist and author Victoria Clark; former vicar Mark Vernon, now teaching the Love course at The School of Life; Adrienne Chaplin, writer on the philosophy of arts; Maggi Dawn, Cambridge University chaplain and broadcaster; and New Testament scholar and lecturer Paula Gooder.
Headliners this year include Norwegian electronic duo Royksopp and Belfast’s music-hall maestro Duke Special. We’ll have electro beats and perceptive lyrics courtesy of Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, and Mercury Prize-nominated hip-hop artist Sway. Making their Festival debut are New York husband-and-wife duo The Welcome Wagon, whose recent album was produced by friend Sufjan Stevens. Beatboxer Shlomo returns after last year’s triumphant Mainstage performance, this time with his full Vocal Orchestra. High-octane rock comes from Quench and LZ7. Bringing a more soulful vibe will be Middle-Eastern singer-songwriter Reem Kelani and Canadian Miriam Jones. Martyn Joseph performs with another favourite, poet and lyricist Stewart Henderson. We’ll also have soul, hip-hop and sonic experimentation from Homecut, an acoustic set from Stu G, guitarist with Delirious?, and acoustic hip-hop from the Austin Francis Connection. Plus we’ll have the Performance Café’s singer-songwriter feast, under-18s on the Fresh Talent Stage and as always, busking spaces around the site. As ever, there’s oh so much more – for full music listings, check out the website.
Literature Acclaimed by critics, loved by readers, the big literary names at Greenbelt 2009 include legendary chronicler of the M25 Iain Sinclair talking psychogeography and Jasper Fforde, author of the bestselling Thursday Next series, talking thrills. We welcome back Jon McGregor, writer of If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things, for which he was Booker longlisted and Sally Nicholls, winner of Waterstone’s Children’s Book Prize for Ways to Live Forever. Poetry Slam with Alison Brumfit & Lizzie McHale is back, and wordplay comes from Countdown and Weakest Link Champion Chris Wills. The (Bring Your Own) Library returns with the Great Greenbelt Book Exchange. Bring a book you think the world should read, leave it in The Library for another Greenbelter to enjoy, and take away someone else’s favourite. We’re also bringing back the Greenbelt Book Club, a chance to discuss Jackie Kay’s Wish I Was Here, Henry David Thoreau’s Walden and Carol Ann Duffy’s Rapture with other passionate souls.
Comedy, Performing Arts and Film Alex Horne is on a mission to get his made-up words into the English dictionary but this hasn’t stopped him playing all the top comedy clubs or writing and performing on ITV, BBC3 and Radio 4. Mundo Jazz are a beautifully subtle satirical ‘protest band’. Worried about your carbon footprint? Don’t bother, you can buy one of theirs after the show! Barbara Nice, the creation of Phoenix Nights’ Janice Connolly, is an affectionate and well-meaning Stockport housewife; an enthusiastic, livewire force of nature it’s hard not to love. Innovative, arresting, accessible: Ockham’s Razor combine circus and visual theatre in mid-air for a truly special Big Top performance. Applecart Theatre Company turn the Gospels into vivid drama, telling stories with the simplest of props and the most surprising of songs. No Nonsense make theatre for and with young people, specialising in bringing together puppetry, masks, music and drama. Films include the award-winning climate change documentary The Age of Stupid, Animat performing a live re-score of dark comedy Tuvalu, and the winner of this year’s Best Documentary Oscar, Man On Wire. Monday afternoon will also see the inaugural Greenbelt Oscars – to view the categories and nominate, go to greenbelt.org.uk/oscars
Worship & Spirituality
Visual Arts
Youth
As Shlomo said of last year’s festival, “Cool man, God’s the headline.” For the full, extraordinary breadth of Greenbelt Worship, see the website. Here’s a flavour of the Almighty’s support acts…
London’s Wallspace curates Visionaries, exploring the prophetic edge of works by artists such as Stanley Spencer, the Chapman brothers and Billy Childish, who will be giving away a limited edition piece of art at the Festival.
Greenbelt’s all-new youth village The Shed is at the centre of a youth programme that’s bigger and better than ever.
Playful US ‘jalopy-gospellers’ Agents of Future want to collaborate extravagantly – with you. Look out for their ‘Kollabo-kiosks’, projectors, pianos and puppets! Another treat from stateside is Colorado’s House for All Sinners and Saints with a Southern Gospel/Americana Bluegrass Eucharist.
Meditate on Gethsemane, which uses audio-visual data projection to create a word-grid of Jesus’ Gethsemane prayer. See Me features stunning artwork created by Luton teenagers giving voice to their experiences of the care system.
Many of Greenbelt’s cherished heartstirrers are returning too: Belfast’s ever-edgy Ikon, L’Arche’s liturgies, Taize and the Franciscans. For fresh, new, unpublished talent turn to Proost’s artistic collective of ‘Unusual Suspects’.
Greenhaus is the new name for Greenbelt’s School of Art – fully booked last year, so sign up quickly on site and see the students’ work in the Hub.
Tim Hughes & Al Gordon head up Worship Central, a group that trains leaders, musicians and songwriters. OuterSpace and Birmingham’s Journey focus on the faith stories of gay, lesbian and bisexual festivalgoers.
The Children’s Festival offers free sessions for under-11s – all you need to do is sign up. Children can be registered at the Festival or in advance at greenbelt.org.uk/children/registration
Worshipping in the Long Now are Manchester’s Sanctus 1 with ‘Infinite Service’, South London’s Op/en with ‘Are you sitting comfortably?’ and Molten Meditation’s ‘Music and Scripture for Full Immersion’. Oxford’s mayBe community offer worship at a ‘Fashionable Pace’, York’s Visions tell us a story with ‘Once Upon a Time’ and there’s an interactive all-age service from Bath’s Sanctuary.
Children and all-age
This year’s delights include Doug Horley, Bubbles Inc, with world-record holding bubblemaker Samsam Bubbleman, The Dapper Chaps, a circus skills workshop and ventriloquist Tom Elliott. Messy Play returns, a place for adults to sit and chat while children search for treasure and explore gooey stuff. This year we’re also trialling Early Bird, a tent in our Children’s Festival which will be open from 6am–8am, for those mornings when your children are awake many hours before the rest of the campsite!
Favourites from last year are back: the skate park, podules and Fresh Talent Stage showcasing young talent of all kinds, while live bands return to the Underground venue. There are new flavours too – all highlighted in an improved Youth Festival Guide – including The Shack, a 24-hour café, and The Showreel, a late-night cinema. Highlights confirmed so far include an exclusive under-18s only gig from thebandwithnoname, a beatbox workshop from the Vocal Orchestra (who will also be performing on Mainstage with Shlomo), the Romance Academy and a panel discussion on worship with Tim Hughes. Matt Burgess, the photographer responsible for last year’s brilliant Portraiture project, will be giving photography workshops and Mainstage act The Apples will be putting Greenbelt’s music headliners of the future through their paces. And if you’ve ever wondered what life is like as a professional actor, Jason Barnett (star of The Bill and the Royal Shakespeare Company) will tell you.
Keep Monday Special
Poor old Monday – it sometimes feels like Greenbelt’s Cinderella day – when work begins to cast its shadow and some Greenbelters are thinking more about packing away the tent than what’s on Mainstage. But this year it’s different. For Monday, you shall go to the Ball! Yes, in 2009 we’re Keeping Monday Special and rounding off the Festival with a Grand Ball on Monday night. So make sure you book Tuesday off work and don’t miss this spectacular celebration of dance, cabaret and live music.
Dinner-suited and wellie-booted, we’ll be rolling out the dance floor so you can show off those moves you’ve learnt in the tango workshops over the weekend, or just dance like your dad at a wedding if you were too busy going to talks and watching bands. Make sure you pack your ballgowns, your dinner jackets and your wellies (yes, we really mean it) for what promises to be the glitziest, glammest – and quite possibly most surreal – Festival finale ever. For more KMS announcements nearer the Festival, keep your eye on the website.

Help us realise our potential by becoming a Greenbelt Angel – commit to a regular gift and in turn be part of sustaining and developing the creative heart of all we do. There are 1200 Angels already providing 15% of our annual income but with your help we can do more together. Thank you.
It takes a community of over 1500 volunteers to make Greenbelt work each summer, and whatever your skills or experience there’ll be a rewarding role for you. ‘If you’d like to help us be hand-made, get in touch.

Communion
As part of our ongoing mission we fund projects and individuals both in the UK and overseas who are inspired by faith and practising the art of liberating creativity in the face of exclusion, exploitation and injustice. With your generosity we have been able to support street kids in South Africa, teenagers in the care system, a film festival in Scotland and some performance art involving a boat. We need your support to continue this generosity and making a direct difference to people’s lives.
greenbelt.org.uk/communion Last year we celebrated communion together in the afternoon. Although this was a great success and provided a relaxed Sabbath vibe to the day, it put undue pressure on many of our volunteers so having listened to their concerns we have decided we will return to a morning gathering at the heart of the Festival.

This will go towards projects working to reduce the impact of climate change in the developing world, currently with the poorest of Bangladesh.
Coming together over the August Bank Holiday allows us the opportunity to learn, listen and make a difference. This summer sees Greenbelt launch a three-year campaign focussing on Palestine and Israel – a
land central to our faith – that is struggling to find a just peace for all. We will be working closely with our partners and others committed to the call for lasting change, based on human rights and equity for all.
Over the weekend we’ll hear from a wide range of inspiring and thought-provoking speakers. Come and listen, learn and get involved – make your voice heard in your church and government, and support just peace. greenbelt.org.uk/campaign

Unique contributions once again come from Greenbelt’s wonderful Partners and Associates: Christian Aid host Of All The People In All The World by Stan’s Café, which uses grains of rice to bring abstract statistics to startling and powerful life. This ever-changing exhibition is moving, shocking and witty and we’ve wanted to bring it for several years. Look out for the Mass Visual Trespass on Mainstage and Big Top screens each evening – sign up to join in at the Christian Aid venue. DFID are letting us quiz Douglas Alexander MP, Secretary of State for International Development, and are hosting Q&As and workshops on development issues.
