Varney’s Cleaners of Dover, New Hampshire was recently honored by the U.S. Small Business Administration. They received the 2008 Jeffrey H. Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year award. This award recognizes family-owned and operated businesses that have passed from one generation to another. To earn this award, recipients are evaluated on financial success, increased employment opportunities, potential for long-term growth, and community voluntary efforts. Owned by Jim Varney since 1980, Varney’s Cleaners is a third-generation family business. It was established in 1913 by Varney’s grandfather. “I am delighted and extremely proud to be both nominated and selected for this award,” Varney said. “I accept this award on behalf of our family and our employees. This is a great honor.” Varney’s was nominated for the award by Warren Daniel, the Seacoast Regional Director of the New Hampshire Small Business Development Center. “Varney’s Cleaners exemplifies the family-owned business model and tradition in New Hampshire,” Daniel said. In addition to showing a commitment to the environment by using GreenEarth, Varney’s Cleaners is also committed to making a difference in its community. As a part of the annual “Coats for Kids” program, community members donate winter clothing for families in need, and Varney’s cleans the items for free before they are distributed.

Regulatory agencies around the world routinely evaluate the chemicals we use every day. The importance of ensuring that chemicals are safe for humans and the environment is something we know we all encourage and support. On May 17th of this year, the Canadian Ministers of Health and the Environment issued an analysis of a number of materials, including D5 silicone, as part of their ongoing Chemicals Management Program. Environment Canada’s interest is in the entire family of silicones and how they behave as chemical compounds. Their initial assessment, based on computer modeling, was that silicones could need to be more closely monitored and controlled. Because silicones are so widely used in commercial products (particularly personal care items like shampoos and deodorants), Environment Canada is concerned that silicones could flow into rivers through home drains and other sources and bio-accumulate in sediment-dwelling organisms before they have a chance to safely degrade. Their studies have not yet considered the use of D5 in dry cleaning, which of course is very different. With GreenEarth, nothing goes down the drain. The “closed loop� nature of our dry cleaning equipment virtually eliminates any release of the solvent into the environment.

Just as in California, the Canadian debate over silicones is really a debate about science and methodology. The Silicone Environment Health and Safety Council has provided a great deal of helpful additional data for Environment Canada’s review based upon the on-going testing that the SEHSC conducts. And, just as in California, we are confident that Environment Canada will affirm what we have always known: proper use of D5 in dry cleaning is safe and does not require regulation. We at GreenEarth are committed to doing business in a way that is environmentally responsible. We also believe in open and transparent communication. Our goal is to keep all of you informed and up-to-date about developments in any new testing or investigation of D5 Silicone in its many applications. Additionally, we have kept in close contact with the SEHSC and have supported their efforts to provide full information in any regulatory investigation about the science surrounding D5.
