Outstanding Student-Athletes Took Center Stage At The Greeneville Sun The Greeneville Sun’s Best of Preps Best of Preps Ceremony – 2 01 8 – On Sunday, April 29, 2018.

tudents from each major sport at the five public high schools in Greene County were rewarded for their accomplishments on and off the field at the event, held at the Annie Hogan Byrd Theatre at Tusculum College. Nominations were submitted by coaches from each school for a variety of sports. These student-athletes were chosen by their coaches as representatives of their sports at their respective schools. To be considered as a Best of Preps nominee, the student-athlete must have demonstrated they have excelled academically and athletically while also having been involved in their communities. “Recognizing the dedication, discipline and skill that these student-athletes wield on the field, in the classroom and around their communities is a treat for us,” Greeneville Sun General Manager John Cash said. “The student-athletes represented in this year’s Best of Preps event are some of the finest young people in our community.” The Best of Preps Selection Committee was composed of five anonymous individuals

from the community who each reviewed and scored the nomination forms submitted by the coaches. In an effort to ensure that the selection process was fair and without preferential treatment in any way, the committee did not have access to the student-athletes’ names or the schools they represented. From the list of nominees, one representative from each sport was chosen as the Best of Preps StudentAthlete of the Year for that sport based on the written nominations from the coaches. The nominee with the highest cumulative score from the five judges was recognized as Best of Preps. In addition to the winners in each individual boys’ and girls’ sport, six specialty awards were presented, including Overall Male Student-Athlete of the Year and Overall Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Both awards were sponsored by The Greeneville Sun with the winners each earning a $1,000 scholarship. Other specialty awards included the Community Excellence Award, Academic Achievement Award, Comeback Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. Special speaker for the event was Greeneville Reds Assitant General Manager Kristen Atwell. Greeneville Sun Advertising

Director Artie Wehenkel and Sun Sports Editor Sam Bundy, co-emcees, welcomed the award nominees to the stage and announced the winners. Each nominee received a certificate, and the winners earned a trophy. Best of Preps would not be possible without the support of sponsors, and The Greeneville Sun extends a special thank you to all sponsors. “Our sincere thanks go to the coaches, athletic directors and administrators who spent so much time and effort compiling information and submitting Best of Preps nominees,” Cash said. “We also want to thank our judges, who had a hard time narrowing down the winners. But, most importantly, we want to thank the student-athletes and their parents for giving us so many memories in the past season.” Congratulations to all of the nominees. ane Potter is a member of the North Greene High School baseball team. He has received the President of National Leadership Award in Agricultural Class, was chosen for Leaders of the Pack, and is Salutatorian of his Senior Class. He has a 3.987 GPA. Zane was a member of the All-Regional tournament team,

Tennessee Super Freshmen/Sophomore team and Tennessee Super Freshman/Sophomore All 2-Way Team in his freshman year. His sophomore year, he was All-Conference, and Best Offensive Player in the Watauga Valley Conference. His junior year, he was named Watauga Valley MVP Player of the Year, as well as named to the All-Tournament

team, 2nd Team Johnson City Press Super 22, the Tennessee Baseball Report All-Region, the TBCA All-State Team and TSSAA All-State Team. His volunteer hours include 10 hours for Appalachian Baptist Church, high school fundraisers, plumbing and wood work assistant for needy families and Capital Theater.

His nominator wrote, “I have had the privilege to coach Zane for the past four years. Over this time, he has been the epitome of leadership and commitment. He is a four year starter and was named to two different All State Teams last season. He has earned every achievement through hard work and countless extra hours spent both in the cage and on the field.”

ake Standridge is a member of the South Greene High School boys’ basketball team. In addition to basketball, he was a member of the varsity football team for two years and the track team for two years. His academic achievements include being a recipient of the National U.S.

Army ROTC scholarship, ranked first in his class, student of the year as a sophomore and junior, class president all four year and has the highest chemistry score. He is a member of the National Honor Society and a graduate of the Greene County Youth Leadership. He has a 4.2857 GPA. Jake was named All-Conference

and All-Tournament and was a recipient of the Team MVP award. Jake volunteered at Comcare, was a peer tutor, rang bells for the food bank, as well as volunteered during the South Greene youth basketball camps and at the YMCA. His nominator stated, “Jake will graduate first in his class with an ACT

score of 28. He has been the leader of his team and possesses all the traits of one you would want to represent your school. In the middle of his senior season, he ruptured his planter fascia while playing in a game. After six weeks of hard work and intense physical therapy, he was able to come back and finish the season strong.”

ydni Lollar is a member of the Greeneville High School girls’ basketball team. Her achievements and awards include: 2018 Regional Player of the Year, the Andrew Johnson Ladies Classic All-Tournament Team, All-Conference Team, All-Region Most Valuable Player. She is the reigning Greene County Fairest of the Fair. Her academic achievements include: Advanced Placement U.S. History award, highest grade point average in Latin, Honors

Geometry, Personal Finance, Honors English and a member of the National Honor Society. She served as an usher for the class of 2017 graduation. She is a school representative for the Director of Schools, a member of the Scholar’s Bowl, a Tennessee Scholar, Tennessee Graduate with Distinction, a Greeneville High School Honor Scholar and a Tennessee Graduate with Honors. She has been a winner and a finalist of the Wendy’s High School Heisman. She finished her basket-

ball career as Greeneville’s all-time leading scorer with 2,499 points. Sydni has been a camp coach at the Greeneville High School Kiddie Basketball camp, is a graduate of the Greeneville Citizen’s Academy and an active member of Young Life. Her nominator describes Sydni as the definition of leadership. She excels on the athletic field and in the classroom. Her teammates again selected her as a team captain. She led her team in rebounding, assists and steals. She is our go-to on the court

but she is so much more. Sydney is the first on the court and the last to leave. If a teammate is struggling, she is the first to the teammate’s side. She is the coaches’ go between with her teammates and both sides of this relationship trust her whole heartedly. Having personally taught her in an honors course, I can testify to her incredible work ethic in the classroom. She has a 32 ACT score and a 4.0 GPA. It is an honor to coach this athlete. She is truly one of Greeneville’s finest.”

She has been a member of the GHS marching band for four years and has been to two state competitions with the band. Michaela has been a recipient of Academic Achievement Awards

essica Macon is a member of the South Greene High School cheerleading squad. Jessica’s academic achievements include: A-B Honor her freshman, sophomore and junior years, A honor roll her senior year, has completed dual enrollment classes at Walters State Community College, and graduated after her junior year with a 3.6 GPA. She

received the Academic Merit and Bell Scholarships and received a King University Grant. She was accepted to King University as part of the King cheerleading squad. She has worked with the feeder school cheerleaders, is involved with Students Against Destructive Decisions, participated with the cheer team Relay For Life Team,

participated with FCCLA and HOSA as well as Talent Search. Her nominator stated, “Jessica had spinal fusion surgery due to her scoliosis before her sophomore year. Seeing pictures of her after surgery, I am still in amazement that she pushed herself to recover so that she could participate in cheerleading. In only eight months, she was at tryouts jump-

ing and dancing. She always has a positivity around her, a work ethic that a coach respects and wants on their time. Also during recover from surgery, her father passed away. She never let anything damper her spirit and persevered throughout. I respect her because she could have easily given up. What an amazing and inspiring young woman she is.”

The Greeneville Sun Boys’ Cross Country Student-Athlete Of The Year yland Edward Jones is a member of the Greeneville High School boys’ cross country

team. Ryland is also a member of the JROTC, where he has received the rank of Staﬀ Sergeant and PT Monitor. He has received ribbons for longevity,

attendence, physical wellness, orienteering, distinguished unit, outstanding flight, patriot flag and good conduct. He was a recipient of the JROTC Academic Award. Ryland has a 3.9 GPA. His cross country achievements are Greene County Champion, All-County, All-Region 1 and a 2016 State meet

participant. He has participated in the Wreaths Across America and a fundraising pancake breakfast through the JROTC as well as volunteered with the Meals on Wheels through Notre Dame Catholic Church. His nominator said, “Ryland is a

acob Willett is a member of the Chuckey-Doak High School football team. He is a member of the National Honor Society with a 3.5 GPA. Jacob was awarded the 2016 John Brown Award, the 2017 Black Knight Award and was All-Conference in 2017. In addition to football, he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams all four years. His has volunteered by working with the ele-

mentary students at Doak and Chuckey Elementary Schools reading, playing games and sports activities, as well as being a teachers helper. He has worked with younger boys and girls on their basketball and baseball skills and volunteered setting up multiple fields for baseball tournaments for younger boys. He has maintained the baseball fields at CDHS. Being an animal lover, he has volunteered at the Feral Friends of Greene County Animal Shelter. He is a member of Grey-

stone Free Will Baptist Church. His nominator said, “Jacob is not only a great athlete, but a great student and more importantly a great person. He is a selfless leader on our team and always tried to help others. He is a true three-sport athlete that gives his all to each sport. Jacob broke his hip in the fourth grade and had to start all over in his quest for athletics. His determination and fortitude helped him overcome this setback.”

dia Bulawa is a member of the Greeneville High School girls’ golf team. She is on the honor roll, has the highest average in world history and Microsoft II and is a Tennessee Junior Academy of Science winner and has presented her research paper at the American Junior Academy of Science in Austin, Texas. Adia has a

3.9 GPA. As a member of the GHS golf team, she has gone to state in 2015 and 2016, placed second in the 2015 and 2016 districts, placed third in the 2015 and 2016 regionals and third in the 2017 districts. Adia is a member of the Greene County Youth Leadership program, volunteers at Takoma Regional Hos-

pital, and is a Greene County Youth Council member. She is a member of the Science Olympiad, Science club and the tennis team. Her nominator said, “Adia is a best of preps nominee for girls golf because she has shown great leadership skills along with a great academic record. She has been the girls team captain for two years now and the

number one player. She works hard at her game and always shows good sportsmanship. She has had to overcome her size. Adia is a small person, which makes it hard to compete against competition double her size. She is a small player and has used this challenge as an opportunity to not only get stronger but work on her technique and short game.”

atthew Fisher is a member of the Greeneville High School boys’ soccer team. He is a 2018 Tennessee graduate with State Distinction Honoree, a GHS Honors Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society, was a Regional Algebra I and II High School Mathematics Competition finalist in 20152016. He has the highest GPA award in Biology and Engineering classes. He has been voted class president all four years of high school, is Student Council

president 2017/2018 and member 2014-present. He is a member of the Tennessee Music Education Association All-State Choir Select, the East Tennessee Vocal Association All-East Choir Select member, a recipient of the Advanced Chorus Principal’s Award 2017. He scored a 34 on the ACT and maintains a 3.90 GPA. Matthew is a four-year letterman on the GHS Varsity boys’ soccer team and a recipient of the All-District soccer team award. He volunteers at the GHS youth soccer camp, the Tusculum Col-

lege youth soccer camp, is a member of the Greene County Youth Council and the Greene County Partnership Youth Leadership program. abrina Iezzi is a member of the Greeneville High School Girl’s Soccer team. She scored a 29 on the ACT and a 1340 on the SAT, is a GHS Honor Scholar, a Tennessee Scholar, a Tennessee Graduate with Honors. Sabrina maintained a 95 percent attendance all four years, and maintained a 4.0 GPA. Sabrina was a member of the GHS track and field team from 2015-16 and Greeneville Galaxy

Select soccer club from 2012-17. While on the GHS girls’ soccer team, the team was district and region champions in 2014-15, District, region and state champions 2015 and 2016. She was named second team All-District, All-Region first team, TSSAA first team All-State, Tennessee All-Prep Xtra second team. In her senior year, she was varsity captain, TSSAA district and region champions and was named first team All-District,

All-Region, first team TSSAA AllState and region Co-Player of the Year. Sabrina has 80 hours of community service. She was on the Greene County Youth Council from 201517, the Greene County Youth Leadership from 2017-18 and a member of the National Honor Society from 2016-2018. Her volunteer hours include: food bank, March of Dimes and Gifts for Kids. She will attend the University of Tennessee ma-

team. Megan was awarded the Math Award her junior year, is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, First Priority and the National Honor Society. She has a 3.7 GPA. She volunteers in the school coffee shop, Shades of Grace homeless

shelter in Kingsport, YMCA summer basketball camp and at the Children’s Center in Greeneville. Megan participated in a nine-day mission trip to Belize, visiting villages and helping with vacation bible school. In addition to being on the softball team, she has been a member of the NGHS varsity and junior varsity basketball team and the volleyball team.

Her nominator said, “I have been able to observe her in both the classroom and in athletics. She is a caring young lady who cares for her teammates and peers. In the classroom and on the field, she likes to learn new things and works hard to try to better herself as an athlete and as a person. If she does struggle with any concept, she studies and seeks help until she masters the material. She is a

great peer to her classmates and teammates. She always works hard willingly and tries to have a good attitude even when things get tough. The Greeneville Sun Girls’ Swimming Student-Athlete Of The Year elody Ottinger is a member of the Chuckey-Doak High School girls’ swim

team. She placed third in the 2017-18 Northeast Regional Championship in the 500 Freestyle and the 100 Butterfly, qualified for the state

competition in the 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and placed seventh in the 2016-17 Northeast Regional Championship in the 500 freestyle and sixth in the 100 butterfly. Melody volunteers at her church, Peoples Tabernacle, by watching

and teaching younger children and helping with Bible school. She also volunteers at her swim meets, helping set up and timing events. She is a member of the CDHS Chorus and Women’s Chorus, and is a member of the All-State Chorus.

Melody has a 4.0 GPA. Her nominator said, “Melody is our only swim team member. She dedicates herself to traveling to other schools with pools to practice. Her dedication and work ethic show both in her performances in the pool as well as in the classroom.”

aleb Brady is a member of the Greenville High School boys’ tennis team. He is a member of the National Honor Society and chapter president, the Science Olympiad team and has the highest class average in Algebra I and II, Geometry and Honors Biology. He has a 3.95 GPA. Caleb is a member of the Greene County Youth Council, the Greene

County Youth Leadership and is squadron commander of the AFJROTC and recipient of the Oﬃcer Promotion Community Service with Excellent award. He is treasurer of the Ruriteen and a member of the Kitty Hawk Air Society Honor Society. He was a mission team leader on trips to Uganda and Nicaragua, and serves as a Youth Sunday Leader and Childrens Church teacher, as well as being a

member of the Boy Scouts as an Eagle leader. He was the recipient of the 2017 Best of Preps in boys’ tennis, 100 percent award and Most Improved. He was named GHS Rookie of the Year, the 2017 Blue Ridge Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and is playing as the No. 1 seed for GHS in 2018. His nominator said, “Caleb exemplifies excellence in the classroom

and in tennis. He goes above what is asked and is always willing to help and do what is needed to improve. He is a leader on the tennis court, in the classroom and his community. He was a member of the swim team and track and field team. Caleb has only been on the tennis team for two years with little experience. acy Kennedy is a member of the Greeneville High School girls’ tennis team. Macy is an honor student, maintaining honor roll status since entering school. She is certified in Microsoft Word. She has a 3.833 GPA. Her achievements and awards are: 2017 Division 1 A-AA District singles champion, Region singles champion and earned a trip to the state tournament as one of the top eight players her freshman year. She helped lead her team to Region and District wins. Macy was named Blue Ridge

Athletic Conference 2017 Rookie of the Year and to the all-tournament team in singles for the BRAC. During her time in Junior Team Tennis, she was awarded the sportsmanship award two out of three years. She has ranked No. 2 out of 100 in the state and in the top 100 for the Southern section. Macy is a two-year member of the GHS varsity basketball and tennis teams. Her volunteer hours include the Greene County Partnership Youth Council, logging 50 plus hours a year

in various projects in Greeneville and Greene County, the Tusculum View Tiger Time program teaching tennis, working with youth and helping teach tennis camps and clinics at the Greene County Tennis Center and Holston Hills CC. Her nominator said, “Macy is an example of a team player, always willing to help others get better and cheering them on. She goes above and beyond what is expected of her. She has a true passion for the sport of tennis and dedicates herself daily to getting better and improving. She

is a very resilient and determined young lady. She doesn’t give up and pushes herself to always strive for her goals in life and especially in tennis. Her goal and dream since she was 10 years old was to play high school tennis. She tore her ACL three weeks before tennis season started. Instead of opting for surgery, she rehabbed and played her entire tennis season. She started unseeded and finished number three in singles and earned the singles title in Region and District on a bad knee, as well as helping lead her team to wins.”

She is first in her class of 143 for 2018, has been class secretary all four years, voted class favorite for three years, and voted Most Intellectual by the class of 2018. She is a member of the Greene County Youth Leadership team, a Greeneville Sun Calendar Girl, is the school representative for the Daughters of the American Revolu-

tion award, and voted Homecoming Queen 2017-18. She is a dual enrollment student and in honors classes, on the A Honor Roll, has the highest GPA in six classes and a 4.0 GPA. She volunteers as a nursery worker at Fairview Baptist Church, is pianist in the Praise Band, a Special Olympic volunteer, a WGHS Kids Basketball and Volleyball camp volunteer and a Gifts for Kids volunteer. Faith placed in the 2015-17

Sub-Sectional track and field for pole vault, All-Region track and field in pole vault, placed seventh in the 2016 All-State track and field and fourth in the 2017 All-State track and field. Jenna volunteers at her church, has been on mission trips to Philadelphia and Alabama, and was a tour guide for Greene County Schools Science Alliance. She volunteered at the Gifts for Kids, the Greeneville/Greene County Boys & Girls Club, Kiwanis Club concession stand, the GHS Kids Volleyball Camp, Hope Center and was a tutor for elementary school students.

She was named a 2015 and 2016 junior varsity starter and awarded most aces and most kills. ver the summer, the North Greene boys basketball coach search committee took a chance on a 25-year-old who had never coached at the high-school level. The committee knew many would question the decision, but they felt like they had the right man to lead the program in Sam Tarlton. All Tarlton did in his first year as the Huskies’ coach was blow the expectations of even the most optimistic North Greene supporter out of the water. With only three players returning that received significant playing time the year before, most North Greene fans would have been very satisfied with 20 wins, a good showing in the district tournament and qualifying for

the region tournament. The Huskies had other plans, and put together a season that no other team in program history has bettered. In his first year at the helm of the Huskies, Tarlton led them to a District 1-A championship and their first Region 1-A championship in 26 years. Prior to Tarlton’s arrival, only two teams in North Greene’s boys basketball history had qualified for the state tournament. That changed this season as the Huskies simply refused to lose over the last six weeks of the year, and they rode a 15-game winning streak to the biggest stage in the state. Only one team in program history had ever won a game at the state tournament. And after an overtime

thriller with Oakdale in the opening round of the Class A State Tournament, the 2018 Huskies became one of six boys basketball teams from Greene County to win in Murfreesboro. What made this year’s North Greene squad even more impressive was its flair for the dramatic. Tarlton seemed to be able pull the right kind of magic out of his team time and again as they marched through the postseason. They were the type of wins many coaches need years, if not decades, to figure out. But with just 38 games under his belt, Tarlton kept finding a way to get his team across the finish line. In the district championship, it took overtime, but the Huskies

escaped with a win. In the region championship, North Greene trailed going into the fourth quarter, but the Huskies kept creating opportunities for Andy Stevens, and the senior kept making shots to capture a four-point win. In the state sectionals against Coalfield, the Huskies trailed by 13 points in the second half and had to make six free throws in the final five seconds to secure a trip to the state tournament. Then to become only the second team in program history to win at the state tournament, North Greene had to battle to overtime with Oakdale in a game that had 19 lead changes and 10 ties before the extra period provided the Huskies with a 10-point win.

Having personally taught her in an honors course, I can testify to her incredible work ethic in the classroom. She has a 32 ACT score and a 4.0 GPA. It is an honor to coach this athlete. She is truly one of Greeneville’s finest.”
