Outstanding Student-athletes Took Center Stage At The Greeneville Sun Best of Preps The Greeneville Sun’s 017 – 2 – Best Of Preps Ceremony On Sunday, May 7, 2017.

S

tudents from each major sport at the five public high schools in Greene County were rewarded for their accomplishments on and off the field at the event, held at the Annie Hogan Byrd Theatre at Tusculum College. Nominations were submitted by coaches from each school for a variety of sports.

These student-athletes were chosen by their coaches as representatives of their sports at their respective schools. To be considered as a Best of Preps nominee, the student-athlete must have demonstrated they have excelled academically and athletically while also having been involved in their communities. “Recognizing the dedication, discipline and skill that these student-athletes wield on the field, in the classroom and around their

communities is a treat for us,” Greeneville Sun General Manager John Cash said. “The student-athletes represented in this year’s Best of Preps event are some of the finest young people in our community.” The Best of Preps Selection Committee was composed of five anonymous individuals from the community who each reviewed and scored the nomination forms submitted by the coaches. In an effort to ensure that the selection process was fair and without preferential treatment in any way, the committee did not have access to the studentathletes’ names or the schools they represented. From the list of nominees, one representative from each sport was chosen as the Best of Preps Student-Athlete of the Year for that sport based on the written nominations from the coaches. The nominee with the highest cumulative score from the five judges was recognized as Best of Preps.

In addition to the winners in each individual boys’ and girls’ sport, six specialty awards were presented, including Overall Male StudentAthlete of the Year and Overall Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Both awards were sponsored by The Greeneville Sun with the winners each earning a $500 scholarship. Other specialty awards included the Community Excellence Award, Academic Achievement Award, Comeback Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. Special speaker for the event was Tusculum College Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Doug Jones. Greeneville Sun Advertising Director Artie Wehenkel and Sun Editor Michael Reneau, co-emcees, welcomed the award nominees to the stage and announced the winners. Each nominee received a certificate, and the winners earned a trophy.

Best of Preps would not be possible without the support of sponsors, and The Greeneville Sun extends a special thank you to all sponsors. “Our sincere thanks go to the coaches, athletic directors and administrators who spent so much time and effort compiling information and submitting Best of Preps nominees,” Cash said. “We also want to thank our judges, who had a hard time narrowing down the winners. But, most importantly, we want to thank the student-athletes and their parents for giving us so many memories in the past season.” Congratulations to all of the nominees. Your resumes are testaments to your hard work and dedication. We at The Greeneville Sun are proud of each of our nominees and winners of the 2016 Best of Preps Awards.

Gateway Ford-Lincoln-Mazda Coach Of The Year Award

JOHN EISKAMP

W

inning one state championship is a tremendous feat. But winning two, in back-to-back seasons, that is something most coaches can only dream about. But the dream became a reality for Greeneville High School girls’ soccer coach John Eiskamp back in October. In 2016, Eiskamp led the Lady Devils to their second consecutive title when they defeated Christ Presbyterian Academy 1-0 back in the state championship game in Murfreesboro. Greeneville finished the season with a 26-1 record, and over the past two seasons has compiled a 51-3 mark. The Lady Devils’ state title in 2015 was the first in program history, and came after a fouryear stretch in which they had lost to CAK in the state section-

al round every season. This season, Greeneville wasn’t flying under anyone’s radar. The Lady Devils had the proverbial target on their backs. They took everyone’s best shot and came out on top. At the end of the season, Eiskamp was named the 2016

High School Girls’ Small School National Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He went to Los Angeles, California, back in January to formally accept the honor at the annual NSCAA Convention. Eiskamp was also named the

South Regional Coach of the Year by the NSCAA in the Small School Division. This was the first time that he had received either honor by the organization, though he was honored as the Tennessee Coach of the Year by the NSCAA in 2009 and 2010. Greeneville High School principal Patrick Fraley had this to say of Eiskamp’s national recognition: “There can’t be a more deserving person to be recognized at this level. John is a class act all the way around — as a coach, a parent, a human being. He truly understands that coaching kids is much more than wins and losses. Those things take care of themselves when you do everything else the right way. I am humbled and privileged to have a front row seat to watch it.”

oach Doug Jones was appointed to the position of Director of Athletics at Tusculum College on Feb. 29, 2016, after serving as interim director for several months. He also is the college’s head baseball coach, a position he has held since 1998. Jones oversees the day-today operations of the Tusculum athletic department and the 18 sports that the college sponsors, including men’s and women’s track & field, which will begin competition during the 2017-2018 academic year. Over the last four years, Jones served on the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Committee, including three as national chairman. For 19 seasons, Jones has served as the head baseball coach at Tusculum and is the winningest coach in the history of the program. He has guided Tusculum to 17 consecutive winning seasons, while posting more than 650 victories. Jones has directed the baseball program into one of its most successful and exciting periods. His last 16 teams have posted 30-win cam-

paigns, including five of the last 12 that have eclipsed the 40-win plateau. The best year during that run was a 50-14 campaign in 2007. In its last 10 seasons, Tusculum has won five South Atlantic Conference Championships, four SAC Tournament titles and has made seven trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 2012 club got the season off to a sizzling start by winning the first 15 games of the year and continued that string of wins into conference play where the Pioneers posted a 24-3 SAC record to capture the program’s fifth regular season title. The 24 SAC wins are a new school and conference record. For his efforts, Jones was named SAC Coach of the Year for a third time in his career. In 2012, Jones achieved a personal milestone as he recorded his 500th career win. Tusculum’s 50 wins in 2007 are still a school and conference record, including an amazing 23-game winning streak, both Tusculum and SAC bests. Tusculum finished the year ranked No. 10 in the NCAA D-II and was one of only seven programs in the

country with 50 victories. For his efforts, he was named SAC Coach of the Year. At his alma mater, GardnerWebb University, Jones was a four-year letterman as a middle infielder and set a then South Atlantic Conference record with eight runs batted in a single contest. He also earned SAC All-Academic honors as a player at Gardner-Webb. He holds a bachelor’s degree in administrative management as well as a master’s degree in physical education from GWU.
